InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Wounds Heal, Scars Remain ❯ Epilogue-That Which Burns Beyond Shadow ( Chapter 15 )
[ X - Adult: No readers under 18. Contains Graphic Adult Themes/Extreme violence. ]
A/N(PLEASE READ)- Okay I know that was kind of a weird ending, but I just couldn't bring myself to
end it any other way. After all I put them through, just having everything be okay again felt wrong,
but then having only one of them die wasn't right either. This wasn't really ment to be a complete
angst fest. In writing WHSR I wanted to show how even when faced with the impossible, people make it
through if they stay true to eachother. I really didn't see this as a tragedy at all, more of a romance that
transcends into death. By dying, Sesshoumaru won. He defeated Naraku and found an end
to his suffering. By comitting suicide, Inuyasha wasn't giving up hope. He was simply taking the
necissary next step to be with the one he loved. Then again, all writing is up for interpretation. Whether
they failed or succeded in life is really up to you. Its not my job to tell you how to view anything so
think of it as you will.
Once again I'd like to thank all those who took the time to read this story. Whether you liked it or not,
the fact that you took the time to read WHSR means a lot.

A woman walked down the street, head bent against the nasty autumn chill. She was no older than
forty, but any passersbye would have probably guessed somewhere around the mid-fifties, for though
her pale skin and glossy black hair were youthful enough, this woman's eyes looked as ancient and
careworn as time itself.
Despite her persistant scolding, Kagome's feet always seemed to lead her here. To the left she could
hear the crashing of the ocean and to the right, the angry mutterings of the city. She walked along like
always, and like always stopped when she came to the apartment complex. For some reason the
woman had never been able to pass the great looming structure. It felt too much like abandonning old
memories, old ghosts. Kagome looked up at the top floor where Naraku once had lived. It was owned
by a family of kitsune now. She wondered if they knew the story of that place, if while lying in bed
at night they could hear the walls whispering of the terrors it's history held.
Kagome sighed sadly and turned to go, but stopped as a beautiful sound filled her ears. The laugh
of a child. She looked towards the sea, towards the grimy, sludge-filled dirt that served as a ragged
beach. A little figure stood on this patch of sand. It was a boy, a small, pewter-haired imp who giggled
as the ocean's foam nibbled his toes. He looked familiar, but no. That of course was impossible.
"Come here," the child called out. "Play with me! Onegai?" Kagome looked around. She hadn't been
aware that anyone else was there. It wasn't until the woman looked towards the rickity old pier that
she saw him. His hair was of a deeper silver, more of a gray really, and his skin was just a shade
too dark, but those eyes. When Kagome saw the second boy's eyes she knew it must be true. They
were the color of burning amber, of angel's wings, of pirate's gold. They were empty yet filled with
everything. In that moment Kagome knew. Kagura had been right all along.
This new child peeked out shyly from behind one of the wooden pillars. He glanced suspiciously at
the human woman before running to join his playmate. The first boy laughed. "Good! Now we can
build a sandcastle!" He turned and she caught a glance of his face as well. There was no mistaking
it. That intense, passionate gaze, those expressive eyebrows, even the wildness of his laugh. The
only things missing were the ears. Kagome watched them play. The happiness of those two faces,
it made the bleakness of the docks, of the metropolis, of the whole world melt away.
"Excuse me, Miss?"
She blinked in surprise. It was the second child. "Hai?"
He blinked, beautiful features touched with a hint of confusion. "Are...are you lost?"
Kagome fought hard to choke back the tears in her voice. "Oh...no. I must have lost track of time. You
see I was .......waiting for something."
The first child's eyes grew wide with curiousity. "Did you find it then?"
"Yes," she smiled. "I think I finally did." With a heavy sigh, Kagome turned back to her home. Better
to let them play. The brothers were no longer part of her life. Still, she felt strangely at peace. After
all the pain, all the sorrows and tragedies they had been put through, it was nice to know that
Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha had finally found the little piece heaven that they so rightly deserved.
"What a strange lady." The boy looked up at his older brother. "She looked confused."
The older boy shook his head, but did not reply. They turned back to their pile of sand. It was getting
late. They had to finish the castle soon. or it would become to dark to see. Already the looming shadow
of the apartment complex across the street had reached the edges of their little paradise. Not that
it mattered. Nothing could hurt them now.
Strange isn't it? Where the old story ends is often where the new one starts anew.
