Chapter 2

Inuyasha crouched in the brush near the burial ground, waiting for the others who had come to return to the village. The setting sun cast the brilliant hues of dusk over the western sky as the villagers retreated. He crept out of hiding once they were safely away then approached the grave that was so far away from the others, one marked by a single stone.

The hanyou then placed a bouquet of wildflowers in front of the grave. His fingers trailed over the characters carved into the stone. 'Okasan, Setsuki, gomen about not coming for so long. It doesn't feel right to put this village in danger by my presence.' The names carved into the stone were obscured as night fell.

Silver-white ears twitched, catching the sound of someone approaching. He sprang to his feet, leaping back with a warning growl. A familiar chuckle reached his ears, causing him to relax the sudden wariness the man's approach had begun.

"I know you have lived in danger, Inuyasha, but I would've thought that you would recognize me." Mamoru declared.

Golden eyes blinked. "The wind wasn't blowing in the right direction." He sneezed. "About all I can smell right now is grave soil." His ears flattened apologetically. That was very true, as the scent of grave soil was strong in the air, for many graves were nearby.

"How have you been?" Mamoru queried, eager for some kind of contact with his nephew. Inuyasha stayed away for far too long, and his visits were always exceptionally short. The lord would try to squeeze as much quality into that time as possible.

A deep sigh escaped Inuyasha. "My life isn't easy." 'All the battles, all the hatred. I never have a place to call home.'

His thoughts must have been clear in his expression, even to human eyes on a nearly moonless night, for the lord groaned. "A wandering life is a lonely one. I keep wondering why you don't come home." Mamoru's gaze shifted to the grave. "Then I think about what happened to your mother and sister might make you wary."

"It's more than that." Inuyasha declared. "My presence puts this place in danger, and threatens all who inhabit the village that has sprung up around your home." He turned with a snarl. "I smell something. It's very rank."

Mamoru appeared startled then chuckled. "Relax. The presence of our priestess makes them very hesitant to attack."

Golden eyes flicked to him briefly, in a very recognizable expression. He'd identified the scent. "That's not what has me concerned." 'Damn it, I don't like those things.' The strong odor of rage washed through the scent. "Get back to the village. It's angry." Inuyasha kept his voice calm, the mark of one who had fought many battles before this.

Knowing that his nephew's sense of smell was trustworthy, he began to retreat. There was a good reason why the hanyou kept whatever it was secret. Knowledge could be dangerous when it came to some youkai. A sudden roar made him whirl around, his hand going to the hilt of his short sword. He was glad he'd carried it out with him now.

The sight that greeted his eyes was disgusting to say the least. An ogre, as tall as the forest trees, was approaching them. Its eyes glowed red with mindless bloodlust, and jyaki boiled around it. Not even their priestess could purify this beast. It was too evil. Had it somehow gotten ahold of the Shikon and destroyed the village that sheltered the priestess protecting and purifying it? No. Inuyasha would be more angry if that were the case. He hated those who ate humans, or caused entire villages to be wiped off the map. He hated even more those who made helpless children orphans. Inuyasha was displaying a tightly controlled anger, not the uncontrollable rage he would be if this thing had done what he'd first thought it had.

Inuyasha stood between his uncle and the ogre. Golden eyes briefly glanced over a red-clad shoulder. "How long have you been having trouble with ogres?"

"Several weeks now, but none have dared come so close. The last of them to do so was purified."

A snort escaped the inu hanyou. "That would probably be why he's angry. The ogre that was purified may have been his mate."

With an angry snarl, the ogre leapt for the unprepared human lord; going around Inuyasha to get to him. Wind whistled around the beast's claws, claws that were impossibly large and deadly sharp. There was a flash of red and silvery-white, then the thud of body meeting body.

Mamoru grunted as he hit the earth, the wind knocked out of him, but his nephew was back on his feet in an instant to face the ogre.

Inuyasha bared his teeth in a snarl, disturbing flecks of red dancing in his eyes with his anger. He could feel his youkai blood futilely struggling against a very strong barrier. He cracked his knuckles, displaying his claws threateningly. "Last chance to run." The hanyou dodged a swipe that would have cut him in half had he not been so quick and agile. "That's it."

Inuyasha leapt into the air, drawing back one clawed hand. "Sankon Tesso!!" The hanyou slashed, streaks of yellow light, like lightning in appearance, glowed along the path of his strike. The ogre fell dead and in pieces, blood rapidly evacuating each one.

Silver-white ears caught the sounds of the braver villagers approaching. He tensed, ready to flee. A brief glance at his uncle assured him that he was fine, then Inuyasha leapt into the forest. By the time he turned around, the villagers were with his uncle.

"Mamoru-sama, are you all right?" one queried. This man held a torch aloft, causing his lord to blink as his eyes adjusted to its flickering light.

"I'm fine. The ogre never laid a claw on me." Mamoru revealed.

A retainer spoke up. "My lord, could this be because you met your sister-son? He is hanyou, and they attract danger."

The lord snorted. "I doubt that. The ogre wouldn't have followed Inuyasha all the way here just to take out someone he cared about. Besides, we've been having problems with ogres for almost two months now. It would be silly to blame Inuyasha for his heritage. He guards this village by rarely coming."

Relief flooded over the hiding hanyou. He'd been afraid that his uncle would agree with them and turn on him. But he couldn't stay much longer. Only until they were safely within the barrier the priestess had cast around the village.

The ring of light cast by the torch flickered even more wildly when it passed through the spell. They were safe now. He could leave, and in leaving, protect what little remained of his family.
