Epilogue

Inuyasha leapt over the chaos below him, then landed at the hut Kikyo lived in. He could smell both her and Kaede in there, at least the lingering scent of the miko. The girl was inside. This might prove to be a problem.

The villagers were dealing with the fire and destruction it was causing. They wouldn't be able to stop him. He slashed the reed mat over the door to ribbons then entered the hut. There, at his feet, lay Kaede. He winced. There was a gaping wound over one eye. No matter how angry he was at Kikyo, he wouldn't let a pup suffer for it. Quickly, he grabbed a contianer of water and a clean cloth. After cleaning her wound, he bandaged it securly.

The hanyou snatched the beads the jewel was suspended on then rushed out of the burning village while laughing. "This is only what you fools deserve!" 'Just as I deserve the Shikon Jewel!' His sprint lead him back into the forest, trees blurring past him.

He finally came to a halt in front of the Goshinboku, the one place he felt secure. 'With this, I can become a true youkai. I won't be alone anymore.' The yoki in the gem swirled, beginning to get the better of the soul of the miko trapped within.

"Inuyasha!" a voice cried. The hanyou turned, only to see an arrow nearly upon him. It hit the mark, going right through his heart and pinning him to the tree. Kikyo's blood scent reached his nose as she knelt to pick up the jewel he'd dropped. 'Nani? How did the bitch get wounded? I didn't touch her.'

Her soft voice reached his ears. "The jewel...for such a thing..."

Inuyasha's vision and hearing faded to eternal night.

The hanyou felt a pinch on his ear, prompting him to open his eyes. Golden eyes met violet, causing him to yelp. "Iie!" Setsuki giggled in the background, shocking him even further.

"Calm down, Inuyasha." Izayoi commanded. Her son took slow deep breaths to get his panic under control.

"If I'm here that means I'm..." he trailed off, not wanting to complete his sentence. Pain swirled in his golden eyes; stemming from a wound that could only be healed by the one meant to free him from this spell.

"You're not dead." Izayoi contradicted. Her hand touched the arrow that, even here, protruded from his chest. "The miko sealed you. Right now, you're dreaming my, son. The dead can enter the dreams of the living."

Setsuki approached her brother; her golden eyes shining. "The sealing spell put you in a state near death. But," she stressed the word, "nothing will happen to you as long as you're asleep and pinned to the Goshinboku." She blinked, noticing his sad expression. "Niichan, what's wrong?"

Izayoi appeared concerned. She'd never seen her son so depressed. "Don't hold it in. Tell us."

A troubled sigh escaped him. "I thought I found acceptance and love, but I was wrong again. I'll always be alone."

Years passed and the people in the village grew older. Their children had children, and their grandchildren had children. During these years, the sacred tree continued to grow, suspending the blooming of its fragrant white flowers in mute protest to the tragedy that happened below its spreading branches. Roots sprang from the soil, twinging about Inuyasha's body to support him so that the arrow wouldn't rip its way free and kill the hanyou destined to change all of Japan and save countless lives.

Dream upon dream came to Inuyasha, reliving the past or imagining the future that could have been until his heart was deeply wounded and bitter. Still he slept, waiting for that magical touch from a nearly identical soul.
