All in The Timing

June, 23, 2005 (11:12 p.m.)
Silver Star Museum

“You ready, Jake to make our rounds.” Said a black man in his late forties, with rapidly growing grey hair and decreasing black hair.
“Yeah Will,” said a very young half male with brown eyes and long black hair that reached just past his shoulders, which was now tied with a rubber band. He was about 5'9' slim but muscular, and was now sporting a tan skin. When he smiled you could see four canine like teeth, two at the top two at the bottom. With one look you may suggest he to be Caucasian, but if you'd take a closer look at him you could see Asian in him clearly, but most people never take that closer look.
Jake and Will were both nighttime security guards at the Silver Star Museum, a new museum in New York City. The museum had everything from paintings, to statues, to jewelry, and more. It had a high security system, that had both laser alarms and motion sensors, there was only a need for two guards at night, because of the high security. In the security room, one wall was covered with about fifty TV monitors. Each monitor was hooked up to a camera which was carefully placed around the museum, invisible to anyone who was not looking for them. Each monitor was recording what the camera was reading.
Jake stood up out of his chair and turned to Will who was opening the door. He started walking out the door when Will stopped him.
“You got your walkie talkie and flashlight this time?” Will said smiling. Jake started to pat himself and groaned.
“In my bag.” Jake said turning around, “Why don't you go ahead and I'll meet you. I think I have to actually dig in deep.” Jake pulled his gym bag that held his change of clothes and some schoolwork, and his work supplies, like night stick, walkie talkie and flashlight from under the table which was in front of the monitors
“Alright kid,” Will said at the everyday routine, “even on your last day of work, you still manage to forget things.” Jake just smirked his famous smirk, that showed one of this “fangs” as he liked to call them, at Will who laughed then left the room closing the door behind him. As the door closed Jake's trade mark smirk disappeared and a more serious face appeared.
Jake opened the bad and pulled his supplies which were on the top of his things, then he pulled out a case of CDs, he tool out six previously recorded CDs which was marked 23, 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28 He looked the monitors, and turned his attention to the ones marks from 23 through 28. He checked his watch, it read 11:17, he pressed stop on all six and then eject all monitors stopped recording and came out. Six CDs came out of the DVD monitors, Jake took them out and placed them in the case, then he put his own CD's in the monitor and looked at his watch again, which matched the time on monitors to the second. When the time hit 11:18:15 he hit play to number 23, 11:18:20 he hit play to number 24, at 11:18:25 he hit play to number 25,
11:18:30, played number 26, 11:18:35 he played 27, at 11:18:40 he played 28. He then took 4 more CDs out of his case which read 1 2, 3, and 4. He turned to the monitors that read 1 through 4, he stopped recording on them all and took out the CDs. He then placed his in the monitors and when his watch hit 11:19: 40 he played number 1, he did the same to number 2, 3, and 4 every
five seconds. Once he was satisfied he placed the CD case in his bag, and smiled because he didn't miss a single second, which would screw up his whole plan.
“Hey Jake you there, over.” came Will's voice over the walkie talkie.
Jake picked up his talkie and responded, “Yeah, I'm coming, my stuff was at the bottom of my bag, I'm out the door now, over.” Jake said putting his bag back under the table and headed out the door.
“You got less than five minutes to get out here so we can start on time, over.”
“I know, I know, it's all in the timing, right, over.” Jake said laughing as he walked down the hall.
“Right, over.” Will said laughing.
“I'm right behind you.” Jake said turning a corner. “So don't get out your pepper spray just yet, over.”
“Good thing you told me, Jake, I was about to do a Rock's move on you, over.”
“Whatever you say old man, over and out.” Jake smiled as he saw Will's figure up ahead. Things are going according to plan, now all I have to do is wait for my break before the real fun begins, he thought.
“What are you smiling about?” Will said turning to Jake.
“Just picturing you doing Rock's elbow move, without you breaking your back.”
“Ha ha ha, just because I'm not young as I used to be, doesn't mean I can't whip your butt in wrestling.”
“Keh, whatever old man.” Jake said, looking at his watch. “It's 11:22, lets go.”
“You make us almost late and your rushing me. Young people these days are so blaming.”
“Old people these days are so senile.” Jake responded, as he cut off the alarm in the corridor that led to the main room of entrance. They both chuckled and opened the door that led to the main lobby of the museum.
The main lobby had artifacts of all kinds, then it had four hallways. One lead outside, the others led west, south and east. Four cameras were in the main lobby, 1 through 4. Jake looked at each camera and went over in his head what happened every night he and Will worked with each other.
He's going to check camera two then number four, as I check one and three, Jake thought to himself.
“I'll check two and four, you do one and three.” Will said heading over to the two camera in the far right corner. Jake walked over to number one, but stopped short, he turned to Will who was in front of Camera two. Jake waved his hand up in the air expecting Will to do the same. Will did the same, the camera following his every move. Jake started walking toward camera three as Will walked to camera four. Jake waved his hand again and as expected Will did the same, the camera following his every move.
“I'm good here.” Will said walking to the Jake. Jake smiled and walked to him.
“Yeah, my camera's good too.” Together they walked over to the east and north wings.
“Can't believe this is your last day.” Will said shaking his head.
“Yeah, well my mother needs me more than I need his job..”
“I know man, it's just that between me and you, I'd rather work with you than any other person in this place.”
“True that, Charlie is kind of psycho in the head.” Jake said with a laugh.
“Yeah, and to add to that...Jacob is so far up in his ass it'll take the Jaws of Life to pull him out.” The two laughed so hard they had tears. “Yeah, but no matter what, I'll miss those guys, and the others.” Jake said once they settled down, “Tell Aaliesha, that I won't forget to send her birthday present, and Aaliza that I'll send her one too.”
“You spoil them more than me and Kiesha, and we're their parents.”
“What can I say, I always wanted a little sister.”
“Yeah, when you come around they have no problem letting you take up that role.”
Jake nodded with a chuckle, as the two then separated, Will in the north wing and Jake in the east. Jake looked up at the cameras that were in the hall, number 23 and 24. The red glow in the dark stickers were still there to make it look like it was recording. He walked down the hall as normal doing his jobs flashing the light in corners, checking the windows making sure no burglars were in the museum. That would have been the last thing that he'd absolutely need, someone else taking his claim.
Jake walked into the room doing the normal routine. He walked around the room checking the windows making sure they were intact. Making sure no one was hiding anywhere behind the walls and statues. He then looked at the case glass that stood in the center of the room. He walked to the case and shined his flashlight on the object in the case. He smirked at his soon to be prize.
“In a couple more days you'll be in the hands of your new greedy owner.” Jake said to himself. He lifted his walkie talkie to his lips, pressed the button to alert Charlie. “All clear over here, over.”
“Same as here, over.” Came the static reply.
“Meet you in the main lobby, over.”
“You know it, over.”
“See you in a few, over and out.” Jake ended. He turned quickly on his heels leaving the room, hallway, and his soon to be five thousand dollar prize. He met up with Charlie in the lobby. They then separated again, this time Jake taking the south wing and Charlie taking the west. They did another search like the ones done in the other wings. After they were done the met again in the lobby before walking back to the security's office.

Once in the office they reminisced and laughed about working days passed, as well as keeping a close eye on the camera as they were supposed to. They were both good at their jobs. To Charlie, the day was the same, nothing new happened as usually, just having fun with Jake as always. To Jake the day seemed to be going as planned, if everything continued as such, then by this time tomorrow he would be in the hotel room out of the state.
As Charlie was checking each camera for burglars, Jake was discretely digging through his bag. One of his hands were fishing through the bag until they closed around a small jewelry box. He opened the box with his fingers and took out the ring that was inside of it. He placed the ring in his palm. He pulled his hand from the bag and secretly put it in his pants pocket. He then stood and got his attention from Charlie.
“I'm bout to head out to break.” Jake said making a show of pulling out his wallet from his duffle bag. “You want the usual?”
“Let's see...the usually sub or something else? Do I even want a sub?” Charlie said tapping his finger on his chin. “Um, I think I want, yeah the usual.”
Jake let out the air that he wasn't realizing he was holding when Charlie starting talking about something else. He also loosened his tight death grip on his bag. He knew that his whole plan revolved around Charlie ordering the same thing that he normally did when Jake went to the store around the block.
“You need verity in your life old man.” Jake joked as usually.
“Why would I do that if I know what I like?”
“Hell if I know.” Jake said shaking his head, zipping his bag, and stuffing it under the desk. “I'm out.”
“Okay...” Charlie said turning back to the cameras. He then remembered something and turned to Jake who was about to close the door. “Hey Jake, don't forget my vanilla -”
“I know, Char, Vanilla-Coke a Cola. I got you.” Jake said closing the door.
Jake walked to the side entrance door that lead to the street. He opened the door, and before running down the steps, he made sure the door remained open somewhat. He knew he only had a few seconds. He went to the bushes that were by the bottom steps and pulled out a black backpack.
“Hey impatient ass,” came Charlie's static voice over the walkie talkie as expected. “The door won't lock and stop that damn noise, until you close the door, over.”
Jake smirked as he talked back. “Don't play with me old man, I'm halfway down the street. I closed that fucking door, over.” He knew that when the side door wasn't closed a red light would come on in the security room, along with a steady beeping noise.
“If you did I wouldn't be talking to you now would I? Over.”
“I question that, over.”
“Ass, just get back and close the door, over.”
“I'm already coming up the stairs. Now let me go get the food, dammit. Over and out.” Jake said turning off the walkie talkie. He put it on the pocket of the back pack.

Jake walked up the steps, and stopped at the door, he took off his shoes to stop from any unwanted echos that they may cause. He slipped threw the door, and closed it shut. Once the door was shut Jake walked over to the nearest tall statue and hid behind it, he bent down and opened his pack. He put on another pair of socks on his feet so now he wore two pairs, doubling the protection on his feet. He took all precautions when it came to keeping his fingerprints, even his footprints off soon-to-be crime scenes. Then pulled out a black ski mask and pulled it over his head. He hated wearing such things but he needed as much protection as he can get if he were to get caught by Charlie, at least his face would be hidden. Lastly he pulled out a black jacket to cover his work shirt. He then stood up with this shoes in hand and left from behind his only cover in the room. He continued walking down the east wing, caring his pack on his back and his shoes in his left hand.
He walked down the wing with a purpose, moving as quickly and quietly as he can, wanting to get things done and over with before his good luck ran out. Jake walked into the room and went straight to the middle exhibit, without a second glance to anything else in the room. He bent down and put his pack on the floor. His shoes resting by him, Jake opened the bag and pulled out a pair of black leather glove, he put them on each hand. He dug in the pocket of the bag and pulled out a small stip of paper that had a sequence of numbers on it.
Jake stood up and lifted the ski mask so his face showed, and looked at the numbers. He put the tip of the paper in his mouth as one hand dug in his jean pocket pulling out the ring he put there no more than ten minutes ago. He knelled back down to his bag and pulled out some disinfected scentless wipes, and a small key-chain flashlight. He stood up again and took the paper out of his mouth, replacing it with the key-chain flashlight after turning it on. He put the paper on top of the display case, as he began wiping the ring clean of his fingerprints and giving a new shiny glow to it. Once he was satisfied he turned to the case, and replacing his mask.
The case itself was a glass high-tech case that had a security system just like a house would. The case have four glass walls about 10 and a half inches in width and length. One of the walls had a door to it, it was currently locked. In order to unlock it, a sequence of number needed to be pressed in the key pad that was on the platform that the case was. Though once unlocked fifteen seconds would be given before the alarm went off, if it wasn't closed right away.
Jake knew he had fifteen seconds once he opened the case to do what he had to do and then close it before the alarm went off. Being a security officer to the museum gave him access to all the codes in the building, along with the schedules for when the artifacts in the museum were cleaned. For instance they were just cleaned the day before and won't be for another cleaning for four days. Jake would be long gone.
Jake took no time in adjusting his watch to beep once seven seconds passed, this way he knew that he didn't go over the fifteen second time span.
“Time for business.” Jake said beginning to press the numbers for the luck. “7-3-6-9-1 and-,” Jake said while pressing the button. Just before he pressed the last number he put his other hand on the button on his watch to start the countdown. “8.” he said pressing the lock and his watch simultaneously.
Jake quickly but carefully open the door. He stuck his hand in the case and wrapped his fingers around his prize. He pulled it out of the case and looked upon the ring that he was hired to confiscate from the museum.
The ring was called The Silver Panther. It was a 15 kt yellow gold, and white and black diamond. It was in the shape of a cat with two front legs, the rest curved in a tail making the band. The cat and band itself was sterling silver, the eyes were yellow and white diamond. The “furry” chest of the cat was white diamond, around it's neck was a small collar which was a gold band with black diamonds in it. The ring was worth over 15 thousand dollars, the net worth being 18,450 dollars.
Jake looked at the ring he just removed, then at the other ring that was in his other hand. A perfect match right from the tip of the tail to the diamonds on the collar. The only difference was that one was worth thousands and the other one was worth no more than two hundred dollars.
“Thank you Ebay.” Jake whispered, smiling, making sure it matched to his liking. He slowly put the cheaper of the two in the case carefully setting it back on the silver metal tube that resembled a finger. He was setting it back the same was he found the other when his watch went off, reminding him he have eight seconds.
“Fuck it.” Jake said satisfied that it at least looked okay. He pulled out his hand and closed the case. He closed his eyes waiting to see if he was a second to late, if he were it would have sent the alarm in the whole museum. When nothing went off, he let go of his breath that he was holding.
He looked at the Silver Panther that was in his hand and smiled. That was easy, now it's time for the hard part, he thought. He bent down to his bag and pulled out a small plastic bag, in the bag was a small ring box. He pulled out the ring box, opened it, and placed his prize inside. He then closed it all back up, put the box deep in the bag. He took some more wipes after, stood up, and began wiping softly the key pad, making sure there were no type of prints on it. He bent back down, placed everything he used in the pack and zipped it up. He stood up with the bag on his back and his shoes in his hand, and without looking back he calmly walked out the room.
Jake walked to the door and stopped short, he once again stood behind the tall statue;
He took off the second pair of socks and put his shoes on. After putting the pair and his ski mask in his pack, he walked to the door and pulled out a small cell phone from his pocket and called his other cell.
Jake wasn't stupid. He knew that if he had tried to open the door then the beeping and the light would have came on and Charlie would have put the place on automatic lock down in a flash, preventing any escape. He had to get Charlie distracted so he had another cell phone. He placed the cell phone on the desk so that when Charlie went to answer it he had to turn away from where the light. He also put the ringer up as loud as it goes, and knows for a fact that it would be loud enough to drown out the beeping from the door. He only needed a second to slip through.
It rung once then again, he pictured Charlie first getting scared stupid from surprise, then getting up from the chair to answer it. Jake took that time to quickly open the door enough for him to go through, and then closed the door once he was safely outside, and just in time to hear Charlie answer the phone.
“Hello?” Charlie's voice came through the other end.
“Charles?” Jake said smiling as he walked down the steps of the museum, and walked across the street to where his car was parked. “Thank God... I really thought I lost my phone.”
“You really are forgetful tonight huh, but that's nothing new huh.”
“What ever old man. Anyway I gotta go, I'm on someone's phone and they let me use it.”
“Alright, see you in a few?”
“Yeah, bye.” Jake said hanging up. Jake took out his car keys and opened the trunk to his car. He dumped the bag after taking out his work tools, and took off his black jacket also putting it in his trunk. After he closed his trunk he went to the side back door and opened it and got in. In the backseat was a cooler, he opened it and pulled out a grocery plastic bag. Inside the bag was two subs, and two bottle of sodas.
“That was too easy.” He said opening the bag making sure everything was fine. He was about to open the door when he heard a car coming. Seeing how he didn't want to be seen at all. He sat on the floor and laid down hoping the car would just past.
Everyone knows that if you have constant good luck, it only be a matter of time before the bad luck reached you. And all night Jake have been having nothing but good luck, everything was going his way, just like he wanted. Fate proved the night was still young, and his luck just ran out. Jake knew his bad luck caught up with him as the car he was hoping to pass, pulled up right next to his car. And to make matters worse, he could see the reflecting blue and red lights, off the windows identifying itself as a police car.
Jake cursed under his breath as his hand reached up and pulled a black blanket from off his car seat. The blanket was often used for work., sometimes the office would be so cold and he could feel like he was in a freezer. So he ever since the day just how cold it could be, he brought two blankets, one was in his duffle bag which was in the office now. The other was in the car just incase it turned out to be colder, which does happen.
Jake slowly reached up and pulled the blanket down, then somehow managed to pull it over his entire body, without getting up and using his feet as much as he can without making the least bit of noise. He then laid as still as he can without moving, breathing slowly because the less movement of the blanket the better. Jake heard noises outside his car and strained to listen.
The two police men were slowly waking around the car, that matched a description of one that was stolen only minutes ago. They looked at the license plate.
“Do a check on the plate, Jones.” One officer said to the other. The other nodded headed back to police car.
“What's the number.” Officer Jones asked the other.
“JAK001.” the officer replied, flashing the flashlight at the plate.
“Got it.” Officer Jones said looking in the files. “Looks clean, Toole. Car belongs to a Jake Davis, he works at the museum.” Jones said pointing at the museum that was just cross the street. The Officer named Toole, nodded walking back to his car, but still flashing light at Jake's car. He was about to turn to get in, when movement from the car stopped him. He slowly walked to the car flashing the light from the front to the back. He reached the door handle and slowly opened the door, sure that he saw something.
“Quit playing games Toole, the car was just spotted on 105th street.” Officer Jones said buckling his seatbelt.
“I'm coming.” Officer Toole said closing the door, and walking to the police car, he got in and they pulled away. Toole completely forgetting about the movement in the car.
Meanwhile, in his car, Jake was a nervous wreck. He sat up once he couldn't hear the car anymore. He leaned back in the seat and breathed out of relief.
“I'm getting to old for this.” Jake said to himself as climbed out the car and grabbing the sandwiches. He locked the door then ran across the street and up the stairs to the museum.
He looked at his watch, 12:28, right on time. He left for break at midnight, and he gave himself .half an hour to do what he needed to do. He beeped Charlie on his walkie talkie to let him in. The door buzzed unlock and he opened the door, and stepped in. The door locked by itself once it was closed. He swiftly walked back to the security office, and relaxed.
He had done his job, now all he had to do was make the final delivery and pick up the last half of his pay. Then he would go back home and wait till his next job.
For the rest of the night, Jake and Charlie watched over the museum without any complications. They joked and laugh through the morn, when seven o'clock hit, and the next shift of guards came, Jake said his final goodbye, and left. He looked behind once as he got in his car, and drove off.

He drove past his apartment house that was now up for rent, and straight to a car dealer shop. Jake emptied the car, putting everything in a rolling suitcase, and throwing out the styrofoam cooler. Last he took all plates off of the car. He threw on a jacket, sipping it up to hide his work shirt. He then went in the shop and greeted the owner. They already had a agreement worked out, Jake would sell his car for an even fifteen thousand dollars in cash, the car had not problems and had was practically new, it was worth more than fifteen hundred but that's where Jake price stopped at. All the owner had to do or not do was not tell anyone who the previous owner was. He never saw Jake, never even heard of him. Once Jake got his money, he left the keys and left without looking back. He went to a ally and placed his plates in it, and set them on fire. Once out he yielded a taxi and went to the airport. He went in a bathroom, changed his clothes into a black Armani suit that had a red slick dress shirt, bushed his hair and teeth, and placed some things in a work case that was at the bottom of his luggage. He put the ring in a ring box and placed that in the case. He then looked threw his files and switched id's in a his wallet. He then walked out and to the service desk.
“Good Morning, how can I help you?” The desk attendant asked.
“Yes, I'm Thomas Miner, and ordered a first class plane ticket no stop to California.” Jake now Thomas said with a soft smile, showing her his identification.
“Mr. Miner, of course, here you are.” She said printing out the ticket. She handed it to him. “Have a good flight Mr. Miner.”
“Thank you, I will.” he said chuckling. He walked to his gate, he put his luggage in drop off. Then walked through the metal detectors, his suitcase going through check.. He patiently waited for them to finish checking it.
When they pulled out the ring box one of them opened it to reveal a ring that top part was covered by a very small white cloth.
“It's an engagement ring.” The man now named Thomas said slowly taking it from the security guards. He lifted up the ring, without taking off the cloth, and the cotton proving the box was empty. He placed it back and this time pocketed it. He smiled. “Hope she'll love it.”
“Expensive?” One guard said with a warm smile.
“Only the best for her. No one may look at it before her.” He said, closing his case and picking it up. “Good day gentlemen.” Thomas said nodding at them, they nodded back. He them went to get on the plane after giving his ticket to the ticket collector.
He sat in his window seat, and soon the plane was taking off in the air. Thomas looked outside and smiled down at the disappearing New York City. He fingered the box in his pocket. `Until we meet again, Big Apple goodbye', he thought as he got comfortable. He then drifted off into sleep, waking up only to eat and use the bathroom.
