You Only Get One Chance At Life: Chapter 3

Kagome's eyes cracked open as the sun shone in from her window to permeate the room with heavenly light. Unfortunately Kagome was in no mood for sunlight, she wanted it to be dark. Sun meant it was time to start a new day, in which Kagome was definitely not ready for. The events from the previous night flooded her mind as she stuffed a pillow over her head.

“Why me?” She grumbled to no one in particular. Well at least it was Saturday, that was a refreshing thought to Kagome. She was hoping Kouga was still too angry with her to keep his plans for the afternoon. She jumped out of bed, quickly regretting it as the hangover from the night before took effect. Falling back onto the bed and smashing her head into a pillow didn't seem to help any as she moaned in pain.

A laugh came from the door as Rin came in carrying a bottle of Tylenol and a glass of water. She was a lifesaver sometimes. “Here you go Kag, something told me you were going to have one hell of a hangover when you got up.” Kagome just shot her a look before downing 3 Tylenol and a couple gulps of water.

“Thanks” Came the tired mumble from Kagome as she rested her head back on her pillow, waiting for the medicine to take effect. “Your welcome. Now hurry and get up. I'm taking you out for breakfast and then some shopping!” Rin smiled happily and walked out.

Kagome shook her head and closed her eyes, waiting about 10 minutes for her headache to ease off. Slowly it did and she managed to crawl slowly out of bed. Then she went and took a long soothing shower, cleaning off the sweat and alcohol and replacing it with the smell of vanilla and strawberries, her favorite shampoo and body wash.

After wrapping a towel around herself she walked out of the bathroom and entered her closet, trying to decide on something to wear. She decided on a simple pair of light blue jeans and a t-shirt before towel drying her hair and going downstairs to find Rin on the couch watching the weather channel.

`The rest of the weekend should be sunny with a few clouds, but watch out come Monday, heavy storms will be approaching from the east side, possible hurri-` And then Rin shut it off. “Well weather looks good for the rest of the weekend so maybe we can all go to the beach tomorrow!” She chirped excitedly. Kagome nodded, liking the idea. “Sounds good to me, where's Sango?”

“Hm? Oh she had to take over someone's shift at work and won't be back until around 3 or so.” Rin told her, glancing at the clock. It read 9:29. “Oh okay, well what was that I heard about you treating me to breakfast?” Kagome asked with a sly smile. Rin sighed, “Figures, you can hear when I say I'll treat you to breakfast, but not when I tell you it's time for class.”

Kagome gave her a blank look. “Oh all right! I'll take you to breakfast” Rin laughed and stood. The two girls made their way outside and got into Rin's blue Nissan 350-Z. Rin drove them to McDonalds and they ordered some biscuits and hash browns before heading to the mall.

“Rin, only you could want to go shopping at 9:50 in the morning.” Kagome laughed as she munched on her Bacon/Egg biscuit. Rin merely shrugged as she turned into the parking lot. She found a place moderately close to the front entrance and finished their breakfast before heading inside.

It was about 12 before the girls came out, each hand loaded with colored bags from different shops. Kagome smiled as she put her things into the trunk. Nothing like a day of shopping to relieve a girl's problem. On the drive home Kagome started thinking of what she could do today. She really needed to call a practice for cheerleading. The girls were getting frustrated at her lack of caring about practicing lately. And she also needed to go see her family. She hadn't been up to see them on forever it seemed.

`Hm, maybe I can have practice today and go see them tomorrow. Yeah, that should satisfy everyone.' She thought and turned to Rin. “Hey Rin you don't have any plans for today do you? I'm thinking of calling a practice. Sound good to you?” She had to ask her co-captain. Couldn't call a practice without first getting the co-captains agreement.

Rin seemed surprised that Kagome wanted to have practice today, especially with what happened the night before. Sango and Rin had discussed talking to Kagome about what happened and asking what Kouga had said to her, but had decided against it for pity's sake.

“Um, well I don't think I have anything planned for today. Yeah! Practice would be great! Especially with the upcoming game on Friday.” Rin smiled with her eyes lit up. She loved cheerleading; it was the one sport where she could be happy and cheerful all the time. And that was definitely perfect for her.

“Alright, I'll call the girls now.” Kagome smiled and started making calls to all of her teammates. By the time they pulled into the driveway 15 minutes later, it was set and agreed they would meet in the gym at 1:30.

After putting their newly bought clothes away, the girls changed into their practice attires, which consisted of short-shorts, t-shirts, and tennis shoes. They put their hair up in high ponytails and grabbed their cheerleading jackets before meeting downstairs once again. By the time they left the house to go to the gym it was 1:02, giving them just enough time to make it and get everything set up.

The girls slowly started filing in around 1:30 as Kagome and Rin got the mats laid out and the pom-poms out of the storage closet. By 1:40 everyone was there and sitting in the bleachers, waiting for their captains to come over and tell them what was going on.

Kagome and Rin double-checked everything before going over to the girls and doing a count to make sure they were all there. Everyone was there so they got down to business.

“Alright everyone. Settle down. Settle down.” Kagome told them all. Rin went and sat on the bottom row of the bleachers as Kagome spoke. The girls quieted quickly. “Well I'm sorry we haven't had a practice in so long but some things came up and…yeah. Anyways, the point is we have a very limited time to come up with our routines and dances for the upcoming game on Friday. It's completely my fault, I agree with you. But we really need to get to work. So I'm open to suggestions. Any ideas?”

One girl in the back raised her hand, “Lets do the car wash! I love that dance!” Another girl near the front shook snorted, “The car wash is so middle school!” There were murmurs of agreement with her statement. Kagome sighed; this was going to be tougher than she thought.

Rin stood up, ready to talk. “I have an idea, let's just go through all of our other stuff and piece parts of them together?” Cheers of `yeah' echoed throughout the gym.

Kagome watched as Rin discussed cheers with the group. Never in a million years would she understand how Rin did not get captain instead of her. She was definitely the more cheerful and energetic, she always had a good attitude and was always ready with ideas. But the cheerleading sponsor had said that Kagome had more `oomph' to her. She had more attitude and was more of a leader than Rin.

They practiced for about 2 and a half hours before Kagome called it quitting time. The girls were all exhausted, having been practicing flips and dances and everything else they could think of without a break. But they had come up with quite a few new cheers and dances and were all proud of themselves over it.

Rin and Kagome stayed behind to put everything away properly before leaving. As they walked out of the gym laughing about Rin tripping over a mat and throwing pom-poms in Kagome's face causing her to blindly trip over Rin, they saw a black car sitting in front of the gym with Kouga leaning against it.

Kagome glanced at Rin before slowly and cautiously making her way to him. Rin stood torn. She felt as if she should leave them alone, but the look in Kagome's eyes practically begged her not to. She bit her lip and decided to just wait in the car for her friend. Close enough to come if needed, yet far enough away to give them privacy.

Mentally throttling Rin for leaving, Kagome made her way carefully towards her stoic-looking fiancé. Kouga watched her as she walked his way, not saying a word until she was right in front of him.

“Hey” Kagome muttered timidly, suddenly finding her feet interesting. “Hey.” Kouga said after a few moments. “Um…” Kagome said, not knowing what else to say. Kouga stood watching her for another few moments before saying anything. “Kagome…I think we need to talk about last night.” Kagome barely restrained from wincing and nodded. “I think we do too.”

“Want to go for a ride?” He asked motioning to his car. Kagome looked at it and glanced back at Rin. “Rin's waiting on me…” “Well she can leave. I'll take you home.” He said, once again crushing her hopes of getting out of there and avoiding the conversation. Kagome bit her lip and nodded, glancing over and giving Rin a look to leave. She saw her friend nod and wave before backing out and leaving them alone.

Kouga opened the passenger door for her before going to the drivers side and climbing in. They drove in austere silence. Kagome was steadily biting the inside of her cheek as she waited for whatever Kouga had to say.

Kouga drove them to where he took her on their first date, she noticed. It was a beautiful lake surrounded by sakura trees where the sun set over so beautifully. Kagome vaguely remembered that day, seemingly so long ago. She had been so young and naïve.

Flashback

“Alright, open your eyes.” Kouga told her as he led her through some woods. When she opened them she was met with a gorgeous sight. It was possibly the most beautiful scenery ever. The sun was slowly setting, casting a warm onto the water as the sakura blossoms floated through the wind landing ever so gracefully onto the water and grass surrounding it.

“Oh my…Kouga it's beautiful!” Kagome smiled and turned in his arms to hug him. “I'm glad you like It.” He laughed and spun her around in his arms.

End Flashback

Kagome smiled wryly as she thought about that. Kouga took a deep breath, “Kagome…I'm sorry I overreacted last night. But that doesn't mean I'm sorry for getting angry. I can't believe you would do something so reckless! Just what the hell were you three doing to get so drunk anyway?” he asked.

Barely resisting a smile, Kagome thought, `If only he knew.' “We went to a frat party.” Well it wasn't a lie; they really did go to a frat party. They just didn't stay long. Kouga nodded, “Well just try and tone it down a bit from now on.” He used that `or else' tone of his.

Kagome nodded, “Alright, I will. Promise.” He never noticed her fingers at her side crossed. “Ok” He smiled and wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her over the seat and into his lap, staring into her blue eyes with his own cerulean ones and leaning down to tenderly kiss her.

She slowly kissed back, putting absolutely nothing in it at all. Kouga seemed to sense she wasn't in the mood so he stopped and let her climb back into her seat then took her home. The ride back was almost as silent as the ride there, except it was more content. On his part anyway.

When they parked outside, Kagome saw Sango's Black Jeep Wrangler parked, meaning she was home. “Um, well I guess I'll see you around.” She said, starting to get out. Kouga smiled, “Yeah, how about I come get you for lunch tomorrow?”

“Sorry, I'm going to my parents for a visit tomorrow.” Kagome politely declined. “Oh, ok, well give me a call when you get back. I love you.” Kagome simply smiled at him and closed the door, making her way up the walkway and inside.

When she entered the house, Sango and Rin immediately bombarded her with questions. “Tell us everything!” They demanded. Kagome blinked, “What do you mean? He wanted to talk about last night. We made up. End of story.” She backed away from her very irate friends and went upstairs to change. She skipped dinner that night and went on to sleep.

The next morning she woke up bright and early and got dressed in a pair of jeans and a white wifebeater. She left her hair down and grabbed her keys, leaving a note for her still sleeping roommates.

As she drove towards her parent's and brother's house she thought over all of the things she needed to take care of before the weekend was completely up. She still had a little homework to do, she needed to think of some routines for cheerleading, and she still needed to wash her car. But she could do that later, or go through a car wash.

After about an hour of driving she arrived at her family's shrine. They inherited it from her grandfather after he died and ever since had been taking care of it. She parked and got out, climbing the many stairs to the top. By the time she made it she was panting. `Jeez, there are more stairs than there used to be' She thought bitterly before walking to the front door and knocking.

Her mother answered the door, and seemed pleasantly surprised to see her daughter standing there. “Kagome! I didn't know you were coming to visit today.” Koaru Higurashi smiled and pulled her daughter into a tight embrace. Kagome hugged back happily, she loved coming home, and from the smell of it she was just in time for lunch. Oden, her favorite.

“Come in, come in dear.” Koaru ushered her daughter inside. Kagome went in, “Where's dad and the brat?” She asked. As soon as the words were out of her mouth she found her self on the ground with a very excited 11 year old on top of her. “Sis! You're home!” Souta yelled.

“Hey squirt, nice to see you too” Kagome laughed and ruffled his hair before climbing up. Koaru smiled, watching her two children. “So where's dad?” Kagome asked once more. “Oh he should be back soon, I sent him out to get some milk” Kagome nodded and proceeded to follow her brother upstairs to see his newest video game.

An hour later they were drawn out of their game world by the sound of the front door opening and a warm voice yelled, “Is that my favorite daughter's car I see in the driveway?” Kagome smiled and laughed with Souta as they raced downstairs and Kagome jumped on her dad. She always was and always will be a daddy's girl. She loved her dad more than life itself.

Kent Higurashi laughed as his daughter collided into him, knocking him back into the door. “Hey kitten” He hugged her back. “Hey dad.” They then proceeded to go into the living room and catch up while Koaru finished lunch.

“Mmm, lunch was delicious mom! I swear I gained 10 pounds!” Kagome whined as she and her mother walked out of the kitchen. “Oh nonsense, you're so skinny I don't think you could gain weight if you tried!” Her mother laughed lightly and poked her in the stomach.

Kagome cracked a smile and welcomed the hug that soon followed. “So Kagome, how is that wonderful fiancé of yours doing?” She asked with a smile. “Oh, he's…doing just about as well as he was last you heard.” Kagome muttered before changing the subject quickly to something else, “So bro what's goin on in your life?”

Souta shrugged from his laid out position on the couch, “Same as usual sis, school, friends, and soccer.” Kagome nodded and shoved her little brother to the side as she plopped down beside him, swiping the remote.

“Hey!” Souta yelled angrily at his sister. She stuck her tongue out and said the old cliché, “Hay's for horses” “Oh shut up” Souta grouched. Kagome laughed and tossed him the remote, bonking him on the head with it in the process. “Owwww” He whined clutching his head.

Kagome shook her head and got up, determining it was time for her to leave. “Well mom, this has been fun, but I better get rolling. I have a ton of homework I need to do.” Koaru nodded, “Alright dear, you keep doing well in school now and tell Kouga mama Higurashi loves and misses him and that he needs to come with you next time. And tell Sango and Rin they need to come by and see us too!” Kagome nodded, “Will do mama.”

She hugged her mother and brother goodbye and walked outside to see her father sweeping the stairs. Kagome went over to him and hugged him. “You come back soon now kitten.” Her father smiled warmly. “Will do dad, bye!” She headed down the stairs to her car and drove back home yawning.

When she stepped into the house she was immediately hit with the aroma of delicious chocolate chip cookies, Rin style. “Mmm, I wish I could walk in to that every day.” Rin came out of the kitchen pulling her apron off, “Well so sorry I can't stay home baking cookies for you 24/7.” She laughed.

Sango was sprawled out on the sofa watching some soap opera. “Hey Kag, have fun at your parents?” Kagome nodded, “Yeah, they want yall to come with me next time though.”

Rin smiled, “Great! I love going to visit them!” “Yeah, and having Souta drool all over Sango supplies plenty of entertainment!” Kagome grinned and dodged a pillow from Sango. “Shut up!”

Souta had had a crush on Sango ever since the first time she came over, when the girls were 14, and he was only 6. He tried to impress her with every chance he had. The girls just thought it was cute.

Kagome and Rin laughed and went their separate ways, Rin into the kitchen, and Kagome upstairs. Kagome got out her books and such and started on her homework. She had to write a 5 page paper for her psychology class in which she wasn't sure she would even need.

Around 9 o'clock she finally finished it and went downstairs to enjoy a luscious cookie and some TV before going to bed. Kagome hated Sundays, the last day of relaxation and the last day to finish up whatever you had to do.

It wasn't until 10 that she got into bed to go to sleep. `Man, I sooo don't want to have to deal with a new teacher tomorrow. I mean, what if he's some old boring geezer? Ugh, oh well. Guess I'll find out tomorrow.'

Finally she dozed off and woke up to her alarm clock at 6. “Damn. I was having a good dream too!” She was dreaming of chocolate chip cookie as big as a mountain that she could run up and chomp on.

Sighing, she got up and went downstairs for some breakfast. Pouring herself a bowl of cereal she idly wondered if there really was a cookie mountain…”Knowing my luck, probably not.” She pouted as she ate before running upstairs to get ready and passing by Sango and Rin on the way.

They blinked in surprise as Kagome ran past them before shrugging to each other and continuing downstairs.

Kagome dressed in a light jean mini-skirt with a stringy black halter-top and flip-flops, before running a brush through her hair and going downstairs, bag in hand.

“Are yall ready yet?” She asked her still half-asleep roommates. Sango glared, “No! Damn I hate you morning people!” Grump. Kagome shook her head; she would never understand how hostile Sango was in the mornings.

An hour later they were all out the door and piling in Sango's jeep. “Well today we finally get out new professor…I hope he's not some old guy.” Rin spoke, shattering the silence.

“Yeah, let's hope so.” Kagome sighed, thinking about how she wished she could go crawl back into bed.

Sango pulled into the parking lot, landing a spot in the back, much to her companions' dismay. They got out and trudged through the massive assortment of vehicles to the college steps.

“We so should have opted for dorm rooms.” Sango muttered tiredly. Kagome and Rin nodded unanimously, then they could have slept another 20 minutes.

Kagome yawned as she took off her ring, and once again placed it on her finger, becoming numb once more to the world. She and Rin went into their psychology class and noticed they were a few minutes early. They saw a briefcase sitting on the desk and gave each other a look of absolute despair. Sighing they took their seats beside the windows and waited.

Suddenly the door to their professor's office opened, and out came…Inuyasha.

Ok, there's a long one for ya, I don't know if I'll be updating for a while, I have exams coming up so I'm having to cram for them and stuff. But as soon as I can, I'll write more!
