Disclaimer: Inuyasha and all the rest aren't mine. To bad, cause then I'd be rich.

Sesshomaru watched the boy depart and growled in annoyance. He would have never taken the kit except Rin had liked him and SHE had insisted. If the boy's words were turn, and she had used the well to time travel then the child she had with her was no more that 6 as she had said.

*Then the question becomes who's is it? Not that it much matters; now that Inuyasha is dead, all that was his has become mine, so be the child daughter or niece, now that I know of her, she is mine to care for.*

That thought sent him to the computer and he was soon hacked into the records of several nearby hospitals. He searched for hours before he found what he was searching for.

NAME: Higurashi, Kagome

AGE: 21

ADMITTED: May 10

WARD: Maternity; delivered May 11

NAME: Higurashi, Renmaru

BORN: May 11

WEIGHT: 6 lb

LENGTH:16 in

EYES: gold

HAIR: silver

DR. COMMENTS: The child has 15 small patches of skin discoloration on her body: her eyelids, 2 on each side of her face, a crescent moon on her forehead, 2 on each ankle and wrist. Mother not alarmed, but refused to consider cosmetic procedure to disguise or remove marks. Child also has a tail; mother also refused cosmetic removal. Suggested counseling; mother in denial. Grandmother checked mother, child out a day early.

*So then, she is mine. Hmm . . . May . . .then the seasons correspond on both sides of the well. But she should be a hanyou, not a youkin; Unless the miko has the power to change the child's blood.*

He sat back and crossed his arms. *But if that's true, the child should be human.*

He stood. "I must find her, we need to talk."

Kagome went to class, but found it hard to concentrate.

*I can't believe Sesshomaru is still alive! Oh, Kami-sama please don't let him figure out who Renmaru's father is.*

"Ms. Higurashi, I asked you for the homework. Did you do it?"

Kagome looked unseeingly at the teacher for a moment, then blinked, returning to herself.

"Oh, yes, Kajahara-sensei! I have it."

*Snap out of it girl; you're this close to graduating and going to college; don't space out and ruin it.*

When class was over, Kagome quickly gathered her books and hurried out the door, determined to get her daughter home and away from the prying eyes of any and all curious demons. Something red streaked across her line of sight, startling her. Kagome squeaked and dropped her book bag, spilling the contents of her pencil box inside the bag.

"Mama! I found you!"

Kagome froze. *Mama?! No-one calls be that except-* She turned and relaxed, a slow smile creeping across her face.

"Shippo-chan!"

Forty minutes later, Kagome was cradling a green tea espresso, the lanky teen across the café table a bottle of soda. After the initial shock had worn off and they finally became aware of the odd looks they were receiving for hugging in the street, Kagome suggested they go to a popular tea bar nearby to talk.

Always willing and ready to talk, Shippo had completely filled his surrogate mother in on nearly everything that he had done since she had seen him last.

"I'm glad you're doing so well, Shippo-chan."

He shrugged. "I suppose." He frowned down at the table, then pushed his soda aside, suddenly serious.

"Can I please come and live with you, Mama?" Please I won't be any trouble-"

"Shippo-chan, are you sure? It's been 500 years-"

"I don't care!" Shippo shook his head, his red hair flying into his face. Kagome looked down at her hands.

"I have a daughter."

"Oh." His head dropped. "So that's it?"

"No! I'm just saying I have more that just-oh." She stopped and looked down at the table.

*How do I say this without it sounded like an out and out rejection I don't mean?*

"Come and meet her. You may get along."

He nodded, still looking dejected. "Okay."

He followed her out of the café, looking at his feet and not talking. Kagome tried to draw him out again, but he refused to open up.

*So much time has passed,* he thought. *She promised that we would see each other again and here we are. I know Sesshomaru has tried to look after me in his own half-assed way, but I want to stay with Mama now. I hope her daughter like me.*

They soon arrived at Souta's apartment and Shippo got his first look at his `little sister.' She was playing hide and seek in the courtyard with Souta, who was hiding in the lower branches of a nearby tree, snickering because she had yet to look up and see him.

"Renmaru?" Kagome called, distracting the girl from the bush she was probing with a stick. She whirled around.

"Okasan!" Abandoning the stick, the child ran to her parent and threw her arms around her legs. "You came back."

"Hey, how about that! Renmaru, I want you to say hello to Shippo-chan, he's an old fri-"

Renmaru wasn't listening. She was making cow eyes at Shippo. She sighed dreamily and then began giggling.

"Hi."

Shippo smiled back. "Hello." He looked at Kagome. "Mama, why does she look like Sesshomaru?"

"Uh . . .she doesn't. Ren-chibi, Okasan was thinking that Shippo could live with us for a while. Would you mind?"

"NO! How fun!" She bounced happily and Kagome turned to the teen.

"Well, that's it then; you're in."

Shippo nodded absently, still studying the child. "Mama, she's a full demon. How did you manage that?"

"Shippo, please," Kagome's voice was strained. "I don't want to talk about it."

"Okay, sorry."

From the roof of a nearby building, a lithe young man with long black hair frowned and pushed his shades up on his nose.

*Well, to bad, because I do.*

Souta watched his sister and the red haired teen come into the courtyard, before descending to the ground.

"There you are, Uncle Souta! You hid very well this time."

"So it seems. Come on inside and show your mom that you did your homework."

"Yeah!" Renmaru pulled on Kagome's arm. "I did all my homework before we came out to play. And Okasan?"

"Yes?"

"Uncle Souta didn't have to help me at all."

"Wonderful!"

Shippo shook his head and followed then inside. *This could be interesting.*

***

"Okasan, why will Shippo live with us?" Renmaru asked, skipping along beside her parent as they walked home. Shippo followed at a distance.

"Remember the baby fox I told you stories about?" Renmaru nodded and Kagome looked back at Shippo, smiling.

"Well, he grew up a bit."

Renmaru laughed and, dropped her mother's hand, running around Shippo and patting his legs. He laughed and tried to squirm away.

"You're tickling me!"

"Where is it?" she demanded.

"Where's what?" Kagome had stopped walking and was watching them with amused interest.

"His tail; where is your tail?"

He smiled and scooped up the child. "I have it hidden."

"Can I see it?" She demanded eagerly.

"Sure, when we get home."

"Yeah!"

Kagome started walking again. *Oh, no. He'll take off the wards and then she'll start asking questions I'm not ready to answer.*

They soon arrived at the Higurashi home and as promised, Shippo took off the wards that he was using to disguise his youkin markings while Kagome retreated to the kitchen to escape Renmaru's questions.

*I'm not lying to her,* she thought as she began making lunch for the pair more to occupy her hands that any real desire to eat.

*It's for her own good that she doesn't know. What would I tell her? `You're a member of a dying race of demons and you can turn in an animal?' She's never believe me and worse, if she did, oh, I don't want to think about.*

She opened the refrigerator and took out bread and meat for sandwiches. The doorbell rang, startling her and she dropped the knife she was holding on the floor.

"Kuso!" She bent to retrieve it and sensed a powerful demon. *Oh, not now.*

The door opened and she heard Shippo growl.

"Sesshomaru!"
