Kagome threw herself face down on the bed and screamed into the pillow.
*Sesshomaru is in sufferable! It was a moment of weakness! After we killed Naraku, we all did things we . . . wished we could re-think in the light of day.*
She rolled over onto her back, still clutching the pillow.
*I went to tell Inuyasha that my feelings were finally resolved and he kissed on the cheek and jumped into the tree . . .*
*-* *-* *-*
"I'm sorry, Inuyasha." The hanyou grunted and crossed his arms. Kagome felt the all too familiar sting of tears behind her eyes. She held out her hand.
"Inu-"
"I'm not mad. I kinda guessed anyway."
"What!?" He smirked, showing the ends of his fangs. Kagome didn't know weather to be shocked that he was taking her news so calmly or be angry he'd kept his mouth shut and let her agonize.
"Your scent changes whenever he's around. Shocked the hell out of me the first time it happened. One day, you were terrified of him and the next . . ."
Just for a moment, Inuyasha looked incredibly sad as he stared off into the night sky. Then he shook his shaggy silver hair and looked down at Kagome, his face serious.
"Just be careful, Kagome. I'll always be here if you need me." He then turned his back to her as she took another step closer to the tree.
"Inuyasha-"
"What are you waiting for?!" His voice was harsh, but it sounded like it was cracking. "He's not going to stay here all night."
Kagome paused, then bowed and began running towards Kaeade's village as fast as her legs would take her.
He was sitting just outside the camp fire and the circle of friends, watching them. Kagome wasn't sure if his look was of amusement or disgust as Sango slapped away Miroku's questing hands again and Shippo laughed.
"I told you." The kit sounded smug. Kagome smiled slightly turned back to the demon lord.
"Sesshomaru-sama?"
He was on his feet in an instant. Kagome was sure that if his ears were like his brother's, they'd be laid flat.
"Can I help you, miko?"
"Ano . . ."Kagome played with her fingers, unsure of her self and suddenly very nervous. "Do you remember . . . that you . . . told me . . . a while ago . . . that-"
"That my baka brother isn't worthy of you?"
Kagome winced. "After that.."
Sesshomaru's perfect features pinched slightly as he tried to recall, them he smirked and held out his hand.
"Come, miko. The hours are against us."
"Sesshomaru-" Kagome grabbed two handfuls of his platinum hair and tugged. He raised his head and looked at her.
"Am I hurting you?" His face was blank, but the concern behind his words was genuine.
"No," she whimpered.
"Good." Sesshomaru moved his body up, so he was again face to face with Kagome.
"But you will."
He paused and now he could smell the fear rolling off of her in waves. Reluctantly, he pulled back and carefully slid one finger into her. Kagome whimpered and he leaned forward and kissed her.
"If you are afraid of me, we cannot go on."
"I'm not afraid of you, Sesshomaru-"
She gasped as something warm began running down her leg. Sesshomaru lowered his head and licked the blood from the inside of her thigh, then slowly slid his finger out. Kagome moaned and he kissed her again.
"No fear, little one."
*-* *-* *-*
Now, Kagome closed her eyes and sighed, taking a moment to enjoy the heat the memory stirred.
*How can he be so sweet one second, and then the next, take something so precious to me and make it seem so low and crude?*
She squeezed her legs around the pillow, trying to relieve some of the tension.
*But it wasn't low or crude and he said so many things that night after I was supposed to be sleeping I don't think I was meant to hear. And I got my beautiful baby to remind me that what happened was real.*
The door opened and Renmaru slipped into the room and quietly shut the door. Kagome sat up and tossed the pillow onto the floor as the child climbed up on the high bed.
"Okasan?"
"Hey, chibi." The child curled up next to her mother and she in turn lay back down, and wrapped her arms around the child. "What's wrong?"
"I want to go home, okasan. Sessho-sama is very nice to show me all these cool things, but I miss Bouyo and Uncle Saouta and Baba* and Papa**."
"I know, baby. I know. Can you try and hang on for one more week? I promise, we'll leave then."
Renmaru sighed deeply. "Okay, if I must." Kagome smiled and kissed the girl's hair.
"You know Okasan loves you, right?"
"Hai. And Ren-Chibi loves Okasan." Kagome tickled Ren and she began giggling and trying to squirm away.
"You sound so grim." Kagome blew a raspberry into the child's neck.
"Sorry!" Ren laughed harder and tried to escape. She was unsuccessful and they wrestled for a few moments, before Ren freed herself and hopped off the bed.
"Okasan, why is Sessho-sama interested in me? He's just Uncle Souta's friend."
Kagome sat up and carefully put the pillow back on the bed, smoothing out the case.
"Okasan? Why? Is he my daddy?" the second the word passed her lips, Ren sensed the fear that shot through her parent and could hear her heart beat increase.
"He is . . . related to you." Kagome hopped she'd be satisfied with that somewhat
vague explanation. Ren frowned.
"He is, isn't he? That . . . thing is my FATHER?! How could you?!"
"Could I what?"
"EW! I want to go home now!"
Kagome frowned. "Renmaru, calm down."
"How? How can I? What the heck is he anyway?"
Kagome was silent for a moment. "You and Sesshomaru-sama are dog demons."
"DEMONS?! Demons are evil! They have horns and tails and they hurt people!" Renmaru paused, panting. "Wait, he does have a tail, and he is hurting us by not letting us go home!" The child's voice rose to a nearly hysterical shriek.
"Stop it, now." Kagome's voice was firm. "You're a dog demon. So is Sesshomaru-sama. Shippo-ni is a fox demon. He can turn himself into a huge pink floating bubble."
Renmaru giggled, then frowned. "Demons aren't real."
"Renmaru, how do you think you can turn into a dog?"
"I don't know." She crossed her arms and frowned. "Hanyou . . ."
Kagome's head snapped up. "What?"
"You're a human. He's a demon. I should be a hanyou."
"No! You are what you are; a full demon. I had a choice, I could use my miko power to make you a human like me, or I could make you a full demon."
Renmaru wrinkled up her face. "Why did you pick the abomination?"
"You are not! Where did you hear such an ugly word?"
The child shifted and looked away. "I just did."
Kagome sighed and shut her eyes. "You may not understand it now, or even appreciate it, but what I gave you, my dear sweet child, was a chance for immortality."
Imm . . .?"
"-mortality. The ability to live forever."
Renmaru went pale and rushed to her mother's side. "But Okasan. If I'll never die, what will happen to you?"

{DAY 3
I have wasted 2 days of the 7 I have been granted not training my child.
Instead, over these 2 days, I have been observing my daughter, trying to determine her tastes and interests. Though she is nearly the same age as Rin was when I found her, she is very unlike her. Renmaru is taller, more mature, with a voracious appetite for books and learning. Rin mostly enjoyed picking flowers and getting on Jaken's nerves. Though, my daughter lives in a much more demanding time and perhaps that has forced some of her innocence away.
I managed to wrest the child from her mother's possessive, death like grip and took her into town to the market. She flatly refused to talk to me during the car ride or when we arrived. We walked around for a long time, and I bought her a set of dolls that she accepted with bad grace. Despite her lack of manners, I can still sense the pride and hauteur that should come naturally to the daughter of a demon lord.
Jacken has sent out all the notes to the other demon lords, though they have yet to accept. The next few days will be most interesting, for I believe the miko to be correct in one respect; the child may have already mastered her demon blood. Were it the truth, it would be unprecedented in one so young. Her age concerns me as well. She looks like a demon, shifts like a demon, but she is aging like a human, a phenomenon I find most curious-}
Shuffling footsteps neared his door and Sesshomaru stopped typing.
"Ren?" The feet stopped and he could smell the nervousness rolling off of the child before she trotted past without responding. He frowned and stood.
***
Sesshomaru paced in the hallway outside Kagome's door. He had heard the child enter her room and was about to follow, but then he heard her expressing her desire to go home. Everything froze. Kagome had made it abundantly clear that Ren and Shippo were her first priority and if they weren't happy, she wasn't happy. He waited, masking his aura, listening to Kagome soothe, tease and explain. He was happy when the child asked if he was her father, but he wasn't thrilled with being called a `thing' and an `abomination.'
That stung. It felt like a rejection of him, of the noble blood of his house. . . Kagome's calm voice permeated the rage gathering in his mind.
"-What I gave you, my dear sweet child, was a chance for immortality."
He moved away from the door. The child was too young to be concerned with something like that. In his office, Sesshomaru looked over the notes Jaken had left. All the invitations had been issued, and accepted. The three cardinal demon lords and their lady wives would be descending in two days time. The child wasn't ready. The miko wasn't ready.
*This is going to be the longest week of my life.*
***
The taiyoukin lords and their families arrived two days later, descending on Sesshomaru's home like a plague of locusts. The Neko taiyoukin family arrived first, as they lived in the northern island mountains of Showa-Shinzan. The head of the clan, Lord Hiroshi and his pretty human wife, the Lady Yuri; brought with them an army of staff because Lady Yuri was very close to delivering her first child.
Kagome, Renmaru, and Shippo hid in the upstairs gallery, lying on the floor to watch the group arrive in secret. Sesshomaru knew they were there and was trying to ignore their fervent whispering as they discussed his guests.
"She's pretty." Shippo whispered.
"She's fat." Renmaru was blunt as young children tend to be.
Kagome poked the child. "Shh. They can hear us. And she's not fat, she's pregnant."
"Oh. With what?"
"Ren!" The girl giggled.
Sesshomaru resisted the urge to smirk. Lord Hiroshi greeted Sesshomaru warmly and looked around the room, one thick brown eyebrow raised curiously.
"Where is the child?"
"Hiding. Why have you allowed Yuri-san to travel?"
The neko lord smiled fondly at his petite wife. "She refused to stay home; she wanted to have a look at the woman who has presented you with your heir. Why is she not at your side?"
Sesshomaru turned away. "You're in the Blue Tower. Jaken will show you to your rooms. Lunch will be served from noon to two."
Lord Hiroshi looked at his wife and she shrugged slightly. Obviously, the woman was a sore spot.
***
Kagome and the children were still nowhere to be found after lunch, so Sesshomaru was forced to entertain the Neko family in the garden. The eastern Usagi family; Lord Ryu, his wife lady Sora and their 3 year old daughter Shinju; arrived soon after and not seeing their host, began making themselves at home.
Kagome and her children were two floors away, doing a puzzle and heard the commotion Jaken was making trying to round up the Usagi family.
Ren looked up, still using her palm to hammer a piece of the puzzle into place. "Okasan? What's that noise?"
"I'm . . .not . . . sure . . ."
"Usagi." Shippo moved his little sister hands aside and slotted the piece in place. "The Eastern lord has arrived."
They grew silent, listening for a moment, then Kagome stood. "Come on, I want to know what their doing."
They hurried back to the gallery to enjoy the show. The lord and his family were going in and out of rooms, moving objects from place to place, and totally ignoring Jaken as he tried to regain control of them.
Kagome looked over at Shippo. "I should go down there and help him, shouldn't I?"
Shippo nodded and Kagome looked down at the now elderly toad youki.
*I really should help him shouldn't I? After all, he's old and more than a little arthritic . . .*
She started to get up, but then recalled all the times Jaken had made her life miserable while they were hunting for jewel shards. She scowled and remained seated.
*Screw it; he's getting a taste of his own medicine.*
Jaken finally screamed in frustration and ran outside to find Sesshomaru. Kagome and the children fell out laughing.
Finally bored with wrecking the downstairs rooms, the Usagi clan headed upstairs and the Higarashis followed.
By the time Jaken had located Sesshomaru, Lord Ryu, his family, and their staff were making themselves comfortable in the Red Tower. Sesshomaru was rightly annoyed; they weren't supposed to be in the Red Tower; those rooms were part of Sesshomaru's private family quarters where Kagome and her children had moved.
Sesshomaru dragged Lord Ryu back downstairs while the group was moved to the opposite side of the castle to the White Rooms.
"So, where's the kid? I thought she'd be here."
"She is here."
"Oh?" Lord Ryu began looking around and not seeing her , looked curiously at Sesshomaru.
"She's napping," he explained tightly. "And she's too old to play with Shinju-san."
"True. You, know, she only started talking last week?"
"Oh." Sesshomaru led him outside and made the introductions. Lord Hiroshi was polite to the younger lord, but cool. Sesshomaru resumed his seat with a sigh.
*A long, long . . .week.*
***
The following morning, Kagome and her family dined in the Red Tower breakfast room, tactfully avoiding Sesshomaru and by extension, his guests.
"Okasan, the people that Sessho-sama invited, why are they here?" Renmaru carefully poured milk over her cereal and began eating.
"They are here to meet you." Kagome tried to sound upbeat.
"Why? I'm just a kid."
Shippo put down his tea cup. "Yes, but you are a very important kid. The inuyouki are short on offspring and women. Even though Mama is a human, she was able to change your blood and now you are a full demon. Even though you're a girl, you are Sesshomaru's heir. They maybe here to discuss alliances or the like or-"
"Alliances?" Ren raised her eyebrow.
"Never mind." Kagome cut in. "Finish eating so we can go play outside for a few minuets. I'm turning into a vampire."
Renmaru giggled and dug into her cereal with renewed vigor.
***
Sesshomaru was wishing fervently that he could join Kagome and the children upstairs as breakfast wound down and the last of his guests arrived. The lord of the Southern lands had died many years before, so it was his widow, Lady Tsubame and her daughter Suzume who arrived with two servants each to represent their house and shocked Sesshomaru by not being nearly as plain as their names suggested. The Green Rooms met with their approval and they changed clothes and soon joined the other lords and ladies in the drawing room, where Sesshomaru was again attempting to entertain the group while Jaken was sent to retrieve Kagome and the child.
Sesshomaru listened intently as the lords began discussing their lands and the minor lords and humans who were taking them over. Yuki seemed amused by all this anti-human rhetoric.
"You know the minor lords can't be kept in one place anymore. You don't want us lowly humans to know of your existence, so you'll have people like Lord Kouga-"
The door burst open and Sesshomaru was out of his seat and across the room within seconds.
"Why are you here?" He pushed the grinning wolf prince against the drawing room wall, his left hand turning green with acid. "You were not invited."
Kouga tried to shrug off the taller demon lord, without success.
"Well, I heard you were having a little party-" He turned toward the door as it opened and Kagome came in, standing aside to allow her daughter to proceed her. She started when she saw Sesshomaru, then noticed Kouga. She grabbed Renmaru's hand, bowed to the room and hastily departed without a word. Ren could be heard protesting as they went back upstairs.
Kouga looked at Sesshomaru with awe. "That child-she's beautiful. You're daughter-"
"Shut your mouth, wolf pup. You are not a demon lord; you will leave now and I won't kill you. Today."
Kouga looked again at the now closed door. "You have my woman. I can't believe she survived, but I hope you're taking care-" Sesshomaru slammed the wolf against the wall for the hell of it.
"You will leave now in one piece or in 30 seconds in 5 pieces." He lowered his voice. "And she's my bitch."
Kouga grinned. "She's not marked-"
"5 pieces, as you wish." Kouga paled and squirmed free, beating a hasty retreat. Sesshomaru, acting as though nothing had happened, resumed his seat.
The silence of his guests was heavy for a while, then Yuki giggled.
"Like I said, Kouga is out of control. Also not to bright. Now, why have we seen hide nor hair of that child, Sessho-kun? I'm beginning to doubt of her existence."
Sesshomaru looked annoyed. "Well, you almost met her this morning."
"Ah. Perhaps we'll try again at tea time."
"Perhaps."
***
Kagome herded her daughter back upstairs as quickly as possible. Renmaru looked back at her mother with concern.
"Okasan?"
"It's not safe, chibi."
"But I thought Sessho-sama wanted his friends to see me."
"I know, but we can't just now."
"Oh." Kagome pushed the child into their sitting room, glanced over her shoulder and hastily shut the door. Shippo looked up from his book, surprised.
"Mama?" He sniffed and frowned. "Kouga."
"Yes. He was here and I'm not sure why."
Renmaru went into her playroom and began pulling out all of the dolls that Sesshomaru had bought for her to play with. Kagome watched her arrange them in a tight circle, then take out a stuffed T-Rex and stomp all the dolls into the carpet. Kagome raised her eyebrow and exchanged looks with Shippo.
"You know, there would be no reason for Kouga to be here. He's not a taiyoukin by birth or by marriage," Shippo thought aloud.
"I know."
"ROWWER!" The T-Rex was still wreaking destruction in the play room. Now, it was eating several of the dolls, including the one Ren had drawn magenta face striped on. Kagome started to ask her to play something else, when there was a knock at the door. Shippo stood.
"It's Jaken." He opened the door and talked to the little toad servant and nodded. He returned and sat back down. "You have been re-summoned for tea. He says wear a kimono."
