*I can't believe it's been 3 months already.* Kagome started at a sound and quickly glanced over her shoulder. A small boy, chasing a soccer ball passed close to her. A dog barked and children laughed, couples jogged passed, birds sang. It was a normal day at the park.
*I've got to stop jumping at every little sound.*
She looked at Shippo who was playing tag with Renmaru. *He's so good with her.*
“Ani!” Big brother. “Look at me!” Ren ran to the monkey bars, climbed to the middle bar, and began doing one leg turns. Shippo, knowing full well that Sesshomaru could show up at any second, moved closer to his sister's side.
“That's very cool.” He glanced back at his mother. Kagome sat, perched really, on a nearby bench, watching everything around her with a critical eye. The morning that Kagome had argued with Sesshomaru 3 months ago had at first confused him, then upset him. He had started to followed her out into the hallway, and had seen as well as overheard Sesshomaru's confrontation with his mother. Now, weeks later, after replaying their conversation in his head, he was feeling even more protective of his two favourite women than ever. Ren, as children are want to do even in a crisis, played on, oblivious to the adults scanning the area for danger.
That morning, Sesshomaru hadn't stopped them from leaving the castle. Jaken had even seen them to the door and called a cab for them, but that had only served to make Kagome even more suspicious. The demon lord was well known for his patience, as well as his swift retribution. Why had he let them leave with so little fuss?
Kagome took another survey of the area and stood. Her nerves were shot. *I need a nap and cup of tea.* “Shippo, Ren-chibi, time to go.”
“Ah, man!”
“Coming.”
Kagome smiled slightly at their reaction; they sounded like Souta and herself in long ago, more innocent days. Dragging her feet slightly so that she had to be propelled by Shippo's pulling, Ren followed them around the corner to their apartment.

Sesshomaru stood and shook hands with the now former owner. “It has been a pleasure.” He smiled as pleasantly as he was able.
“It certainly has. You know, I'd never really considered selling, but with the cost of real estate these days . . .” The man shook his head.
“It may not look it, but these tenets are good. They always pay on time in full. I hope eviction isn't on your `To Do' list.”
Sesshomaru shook his head. “Quite the contrary. Fear no, my good sir, their homes are secure.”
The former owner nodded money changed hands, and it was done. Sesshomaru escorted him to the door and the small man departed, happily dreaming of warmer climates. Sesshomaru resumed his seat, feeling slightly smug. He leaned back, steepled his long fingers, and looked around the pokey office.
*Now, my Kagome, where will you run?*
***
Kagome sneezed violently, drawing dirt looks from her classmates.
“Gomen ne. . .” she muttered, looking down at the desk. *My mind is screaming `danger' at me. Either Sesshomaru is back or something has happened to the children.*
Now she was nervous. Never had Kagome been so impatient for break time to come. When it finally arrived, Kagome already had her cell phone in her hand. She grabbed her purse and sprinted from the room, dialling home as she ran. Shippo answered on the first ring.
“Mosh.”
“Shippo.” Kagome went limp with relief. “How are you?”
“Mama?” He sounded confused. “We're fine. Ren's taking a nap.”
Kagome nodded even though he couldn't see her. “Fine. I'm on break, so I should be home in about three hours.”
“Okay.” Now Shippo sounded amused. “Concentrate on your work and stop worrying about us; we're fine.”
“Hmm.” She hung up and returned to the classroom, feeling thoughtful.
“Is everything alright, Kagome-san?”
Starting, Kagome smiled at the young American student she sat next to. “Fine. I'm just worried about my children.”
The girl smiled. “How old are they?”
Kagome blushed.” 17 and 6.”
The girl laughed. “I think they'll be fine.” The teacher called them back to order, but Kagome still felt uneasy.
*What am I missing?*
***
Sesshomaru leaned against his car watching Shippo come downstairs to get the mail, then quickly returned to the apartment. He had to admit, the kit was much better behaved when he was with Kagome than when he was living with Sesshomaru.
*But what do I know or care of foxes?*
What Sesshomaru wanted was to see Ren, but when their mama was away, the children kept themselves sequestered. It was frustrating. Sesshomaru surveyed the building. It was three stories high, located off of a narrow side street, and there was plenty of room for Shippo and Ren to come outside so that she could play. However, he was getting the impression Ren was afraid of him.
*My pup should be fearless; tough, smart, and fearless.* The rabbit incident floated across his mind and he winced slightly. *Damn her human upbringing. A demon should act like a demon.*
Briefly, Sesshomaru entertained the notion of storming the apartment for the child, then shrugged, got into his car, and drove away.
***
Shippo watched Sesshomaru drive away and snapped the livingroom curtains shut.
*He's been coming and watching the building everyday for the last week. I fear for her safety.* Shippo glanced back into the apartment at his sister's door. *We can't stay here any longer. I know Mama wants us to be safe.*
He looked down at his paws. *I have to protect my pack by any means necessary.*
Shippo nodded, then went to Ren's room and knocked. “Ren? Get up, I need to talk to you.”
***
When Kagome arrived home from school, the apartment was quiet. Too quiet. Kagome took off her shoes and put her books down on the hall table.
“Tadaima. Ren? Shippo?” Silence. Kagome frowned, not sensing either demon. “Chibi?”
She checked each room, but were empty. There were no notes either. Kagome frowned and crossed her arms.
“Where are they?” She searched again, then pulled out her cell phone and checked the messages. Nothing. Her worry was turning to panic when the house phone rang. She pounced.
“Hello?”
“Mama, it's Shippo.”
“Where are you?” Kagome tried to repress the panic she was feeling.
“It's okay, Mama. We're fine; Ren's with me. Listen, Sesshomaru's been watching house. I just wanted you to know.”
Kagome felt her insides go cold. “He's been what?”
“Yeah. Listen, don't worry about us. Ren's safe and I am too. I'll call you in a few days. Ja na.”
“Shipp—” The line went dead. Kagome slowly lowered the phone back to the cradle.
“Sesshomaru's been watching the house,” she muttered. “That must have been the bad feeling I was getting.”
Kagome went to the window and looked down at the street.
*Where are my children?*
***
Shippo handed Ren a sandwich and sat beside her on the bench. She took it, but didn't take a bite. She gripped the sandwich and swung her short legs back and forth. People walked pasted them, ignoring the two children.
“Ani, will this work?”
Shippo nodded. “It's the only way. I can't get passports for both of us and you're to big to pass for under 4.”
Ren giggled. “So, I turn into a puppy and you'll turn to look like Okasan and we'll get on the plane?”
Shippo nodded again. “They said I could keep you in the passenger cabin with me.”
Ren nodded again. “Ani, why do we have to do this?”
“To keep you safe from Sesshomaru.”
Ren shuddered, then nodded. *I hate that guy.* “Okay.”
Shippo smiled at his sister and kissed her on the forehead. “Ganbate.”
***
For 2 days, Kagome waited and fretted, anxious for news of her children. She took time off work, refusing to leave the house in case Shippo called again. She was walking past the livingroom window for the millionth time when she saw a familiar black car cruise past the building, round the corner and come back. Kagome stopped.
“Sesshomaru!” she hissed, grabbing her keys and banging out the door. She got downstairs as the car door opened. He emerged from the vehicle looking like a GQ model, which annoyed Kagome even more. She hadn't slept in the last two days.
“YOU! This is all your fault!” Kagome pointed an accusing finger at him as she marched up to him.
Sesshomaru blinked dispassionately at the ranting woman. “Miko, what are you raving at?”
“Because you have been stalking us, the children have run away!”
His silver eyebrows shot skyward. This was news to him. Kagome began to cry.
“You couldn't leave us alone, and now . . .” Sobbing, she grabbed his coat and shook him weakly. “Why can't you leave us alone?”
Sesshomaru watched Kagome sobbing and blubbering into his light brown camel hair coat. He was wondering what this would do to his cleaning bill, then sighed and wrapped his arms around her, hugging her to his chest.
“Miko—Kagome. Where have the children gone?”
“I don't know! Shippo called. . . he . . .he said . . . he . . .was protecting . . .Ren . . .from you. Why can't you leave us alone?” Sesshomaru frowned.
“I want my heir.” His voice was colder that he had intended.
Kagome went stiff in his arms and then stepped back, shoving him away. “She doesn't want you.” She stepped back further and wiped her face with her fingers.
“And frankly, neither do I.”
Sesshomaru's fists clenched. “You cannot deny me my rights!”
“What rights?” Kagome asked airily, turning away from him. “You've never been there. She's never asked about you.” Kagome paused. “You missed the late night the feedings, the colic, the teething, her first steps, her first bite of solid food, her first words—”
Sesshomaru growled. “You left me!”
Kagome whirled around. “Indeed. I didn't know I was pregnant yet. But I was, and for 500 years, you survived, blissfully unaware of her existence! Ren is my life. I will not let you interfere any longer.”
Sesshomaru opened his mouth to retort and paused. *“—For 500 years, you survived, blissfully unaware—”*
“Miko—Kagome.”
She turned back to him. “What?”
“If it could be done, would you give me a second chance?” Kagome wasn't sure, but Sesshomaru almost sounded like he was pleading.
“At?”
He didn't hesitate. “Everything.”
Her eyes narrowed. “Elaborate.”
