So much less of a threat. She felt as if she could almost walk among them with no fear of accidently enslaving them to her whims. Such a dream was ridiculous, and she knew it."Been waiting long?" A familiar voice asked in a cocky manor. Mitsuko instantly abandoned her previous train of thought and filled her mind with simple images of mathematic formulas and ocean waves."What do you think?" She asked sharply as she turned to face Ren Zhange. His purple eyes looked at her with humor as he ran his hand through his brown hair. He's tall, Mitsuko thought with a small flush."Ah," Ren began as he sat down, "I think you've been waiting for me since the day you were born." He grinned broadly as he extracted his math book from his school bag.Mitsuko lifted a brow as she crossed her arms, "Is that you're only line? I think you need a better writer," she replied tartly as she knelt down near her own bag. Ren shrugged as he opened his books and began looking for a pencil.Mitsuko presented him one of her own, blushing slightly as his finger touched her hand, "I take what I can get," he replied with a shrug. He headed his paper before returning to the conversation, "I'm not too picky." He winked at her before pointing to the first problem, "How about this one, Ishida? Explain to me how to pull off this kind of thing."Mitsuko eyed him for a moment, her deep blue eyes narrowing with every second. The symbols on his hands were glimmering again. He was preparing for something, "You don't need any math help," Mitsuko finally stated. Ren looked up at her, his eyes darkening with the anger at being found out. Mitsuko rooted about in her own bag before pulling out her own math book, "I checked with our math teacher. He said you were doing just fine - B plus i do believe he said. However," she pulled out her workbook and notebook, "your father demands all A's. That is the kind of trouble your looking at."Mitsuko had come to the conclusion that all Faction families demanded high results from their children in every aspect. Sports, grades, and Faction Battles. They were expected to be the best of the best. Mind Breakers, on the other hand, were often times taught to be average. Mitsuko refused them that right. She worked hard at everything she did. It was what made her different from everyone else in her family. She didn't worry about how it made her look anymore. She enjoyed feeling the power of success.Ren leaned back against the school building with a sigh. He lightly tapped the pencil against the math book, "It's not that easy, you know," he began, "I'm not like you." He looked up at her. Mitsuko had to perform a quick check on her mental gifts, they were pushing at her momentary weakness. Did he have to look at her that way?"You come here, learn this stuff, and make instant A's. I come here, I have to take down every work spoken, every mark made, and then, I have to go home and study for hours at a time just to make heads and tails of this stuff. On top of that, I have to work extra problems for my mother and father to prove to them that I know what I'm doing. Then, they expect A's on my tests. They speak with the teachers here to make sure that I achieve that. I can't even relax in my own home. It like I'm constantly in boot camp, you know?"In truth, Mitsuko understood better than anyone else might have. Her family was very much the same. They trained their children day and night to blend in. To hide who they really were and to pretend that they were nothing more then Common Folk. Mitsuko had hated it from the start, "I can only imagine," she replied instead. No matter how much she hated being what she was, she could never expose her family. Not even to a Common."That's what everyone says," he replied with a smirk, "but even if they could imagine, chances are, they wouldn't be able to grasp everything even in they knew. That's just how it is." He sat up straight, his bold grin returning. It was a mask. One that intended to keep at all times, "So, how about helping me out here? I've got an A to obtain!!"Mitsuko sighed heavily then opened her own books. This Ren character was getting to be a real bother. She began to wonder if she had made a mistake in agreeing to help him. Even if he did vow to do whatever she asked in return. Was it really worth all of this?"I guess the first thing I should do is explain the basics of this thing. Factoring isn't as hard as it looks. It just takes a little patience," she began to scribble down a few examples, showing every crucial step. She even allowed herself to use a few cheats she hadn't even thought of since she was younger. When she was done, she passed the notebook over to Ren.This time, it seemed as though he went out of his way to lightly touch her hand. Mitsuko snatched back as soon as the book was in his grasp. His sparkling purple eyes looked up at her as his own face blushed, "Sorry about that. I'll be more careful next time."Mitsuko wondered if she should try to keep all the paper from getting too close. She was sure that the heat from her face could easily start a fire any moment now. She turned her face away for a moment, "Yes, please do." What am I doing?! She screamed at herself, Number one, he's of the Arayashiki Faction. A Faction, Mitsuko! His purpose in life is find out people like you and your family and to slay them without a moment's notice. He's not here to make you feel girly."Why can't Sensei use methods like this?" Ren demanded as he worked out a similar problem on his own paper. He glanced up to Mitsuko's notes several times before making the next move, "This actually makes sense. Why can't he just have you explain the stuff instead of throwing around his weight?" He paused to reach for a cigarette."Beats me. I can't read minds.""But I can," he replied after lighting up his smoke and returning to his work. Mitsuko blinked in surprise and slight horror, Did he just admit that to someone? What if I was of another Faction and wanted to battle him? Is he really that dumb? Maybe he thought I was a Common. Still, though, it doesn't make sense to admit something like that to anyone."I think I'm starting to get this now," he went on. Mitsuko pulled herself out of her thoughts. She had nothing to worry about. Perhaps he wasn't really trying to admit anything. Common Students joked around about mind reading all the time. It seemed to be a hobby with them, but, who knew. Ren took a deep drag and blew the smoke out to the side with a node, "This makes much more sense. I can't believe - "Ren ceased speaking. Mitsuko opened her mouth to ask what was wrong but stopped when she felt it. Her skin felt like it was being caressed by a thousand tiny needles as the world around them began to grow dark and still. A bird nearby had started its flight but now hovered midair. Like a priceless photo, "A Binding spell," Ren growled. Mitsuko froze."Father? What am I to do if a Binding Spell is activated and I am alone with a Faction Member?""You Run, Mitsuko. You run like the wind and never look back. They can never see you in a Binding. Ever.""But wouldn't they notice something if they looked back and I was not there?""It doesn't matter, Tsuki. You Run, you always run."Mitsuko slowly came to her feet as Ren bolted onto his. With a perfected silent step, she began to tip toe her way to the second door. Silent as a mouse, she told herself. Perfectly Silent."At last, ye have been discovered," Mitsuko froze and slowly lifted her eyes to the sky. An Eraser?! There, hovering in the sky, was the most beautiful man Mitsuko had ever seen. He possessed four wings, each one donned on his back and moving almost independently of each other. His long golden hair rippled and shimmered in the sunless hour, his sharp green eyes remained fixed on Ren Zhange whose hands now held the bold sign of the Arayashiki."Judgment shall now be given to thee for thou's abominations. So sayeth the Lord," the winged man proud his hands fairly close together, a light forming between them. Ren's face twisted into a mixture of emotions as he prepped to defend."What if a Faction Member or a Common is about to be killed? Is there anything I can do for them, Father?""No, Mitsuko. As I have said before, you run. Leave the Factions to defend themselves and the Commons. We can not risk exposing ourselves in such a manor.""Over my dead body," Mitsuko muttered as she took a giant step forward.[To Be Continued...]
