Prologue: A New Beginning
Beneath a dark canopy of shaded, moon-washed trees in a forest, two figures were walking alongside a small pathway made for hiking and travels. One was a tall boy at the age of seventeen, with a long, layered silver-white hair. The other was also a boy, but shorter than the first, with spiky dirty blonde hair and bright cerulean-blue eyes. This one was sixteen.
"So, hey... What is it you dragged me out here for?" a spike-haired brunette voiced out.
"Shh! Quick, take out your keyblade!" the boy hissed, gripping his own with his right, and pulled his friend down with his left. They hid in the undergrowth beneath a large sycamore tree.
"Wh-" the other boy began to question. He was cut off short. His friend's hand clamped over his mouth in a desperate attempt to shut him up.
"Be quiet! Just do it!" the oldest hissed in a whisper. His aqua-green eyes studied a strange figure standing a few feet away from them in a small clearing. It wore a black hooded coat.
"Riku..." the keyblade master whispered in a curious tone. "Wh-what's going on? And who IS that?" He darted his blue orbs at his friend and back to the suspicious stranger.
Riku put his hand up to silence him. He continued to study the unknown for another moment. Then he slowly, and carefully, crawled behind Sora to his side towards the next tree.
What was going on? How his best friend knew the person was there was beyond him. The thought of being dragged all the way out of bed to hide in the bushes at this time of night made him irritated. And how Riku was silencing him pissed him off. He wanted to know. He needed to know. And just what is Riku trying to pull off? Was he picking a fight?
He watched as Riku made it two trees closer to the figure. His silver hair glinted in the moonlight. Sora knew they'd get caught any minute now. He needed to tell Riku it was getting dangerous. Wait, what was he saying? He could live with danger. He DID save the world twice, and fought countless of heartless and defeated a number of bad guys. Why was this any different?
Something was bothering him. Something about that guy gave him a vibe that they should not be there right now. They should have never gotten out of bed. Sora had to do something to stop Riku before he did something foolish. He knew they'd regret it later on.
"Riku!" he hissed in a whisper, hoping only his friend would hear him. Only him.
Riku didn't move an inch after reaching to the tree. A soft, but sharp sound reached his ears. Mentally growling at himself, he turned his head to see what Sora wanted.
"What?" he mouthed at the boy hidden a small distance away.
"Come back! Something's funny about that guy!" Sora mouthed back, gesturing him over.
Riku kept a hand clenched at his sword. He glared at the younger hero, and stole a glance at the guy in the clearing. He shut his eyes to make a decision. He glanced again, and then gave up. He slowly crawled his way back beside Sora.
"Idiot," he hissed in Sora's ear. "You ruined my perfect chance of getting back at that guy."
"Huh? What? This was a revenge plot?" Sora asked skeptically. Riku scoffed and gave the man a last glare before crawling out of the undergrowth towards the public pathway.
Sora watched as his best friend left, and then turned to look at the figure. The man was not there. 'Crap, where did he go?'
He hurriedly caught up with Riku as they both ran out of the forest. Sora looked around for any witnesses, and then charged against Riku's side. They flew into an alley. Riku gave him a cold snare. He stood up and brushed off the dirt from his blue pants.
"What the hell was that for, stupid?" Riku hissed, a bit louder than usual. Now it was Sora's turn to silence him. He put up a hand. Riku scoffed and crossed his arms. "I don't have time for this!"
"I think you still have your chance to get at that guy," Sora said, drawing his Kingdom Key.
Riku stared at him, "What?"
"He's behind you," Sora yelled, rushing behind Riku and swung the blade at the stranger. Riku spun around, and drew out his Way to Dawn and saw that the boy was right. The guy was following them!
But how did he know? Was it all a trick? Damn...
The silver-haired boy joined forces with Sora and slashed his weapon at the enemy. The hooded man only chuckled, and then disappeared.
Shit... Now I'll never know!
"Hey! Come back here and fight us, you coward!" Sora roared into the night sky.
"Sora! Be quiet! People are sleeping, you know!" Riku scolded as he smacked the brunette's head. Sora recoiled from the mild attack and rubbed the spot where it stung.
"Ow Riku, you didn't have to hit me," he groaned.
"Come on, I don't know where that guy went, who he is, or where he's from. It's better if we stay together for tonight. Let's go back to my place," he said, beckoning Sora to follow him.
Sora followed his childhood friend out of the narrow alley. They went down the cobblestone street towards the south beach, where their hangout island came in view. Riku lived in the small beach house right beside the dock, where the gang tied up their wooden rowboats.
Riku threw a sleeping bag on the floor for Sora, and flopped on his unmade bed. He buried his face in the pillow and gave out a long sigh.
Damn... We've just got back home after a year and half of adventure, didn't have a problem for months, and now there's some new plot lurking.
Sora straightened out the bag and grabbed a fallen pillow before lying down on his back. He stared up at the wooden ceiling of Riku's room. Without a word, the boys soon fell asleep.
