Disclaimer: I do not own anything pertaining to Final Fantasy (any of them). Those rights belong to the good 'ol folks over at Square Enix…but, that doesn't mean I can't play with Squally boy and his friends for a while…

Darkness…just darkness. He imagined himself opening his eyes...but still nothing. Nothing but the darkness that it seemed he'd been in forever.

He'd long since given up on even thinking of where he was, the thought that maybe he was dead had occurred to him on more than one occasion, but hadn't that voice, the one he'd heard just before he'd passed out, hadn't it told him that it would save him? Had it lied? Was he really dead? Why wasn't there at least anyone else here? Wasn't heaven supposed to be peaceful and...well…white? Was he in hell? No, well, maybe. But he wasn't exactly feeling the flames of the inferno burning him alive. Oblivion? He'd heard of that. A universe of nothingingness. Better to think that this was some sort of twisted heaven. Besides, it was sort of peaceful…
“No. Don't think that. That is where the Heartless will take you.”
`Take me? I'd almost rather be taken than stay here.'
“Don't worry. You'll be where you're supposed to be soon. You just need to sleep a little longer.”
`Sleep?'
“Yes.”

“Be careful Cid! He's got injuries!”
“You wanna carry him then?”
“Huh? I can't. He's too heavy.”
“Then quit yer jabberin' and open that damned door!”

“Oh my, where did you find him?”
“Out in the Great Maw. He was just lying on the ground. We thought he was dead.”
“Oh, let's see…put him on the bed. I'm sure Merlin won't mind if we use it.”

“But if he was that far out there, why didn't you just take him to the old castle? It would've been closer.”
“Well, it's cold out there so we just decided to bring him here. I made Cid carry him all the way back.”
The blonde man stood after depositing the unconscious boy on the bed near the wall of the small house. After popping his back he grunted and strode over to the chair that sat before a computer in the room.
“So,” he began, looking at the two girls, “who do you think he is?”
“Who knows,” said the younger of the two, stepping over to where the boy lay. Pushing some of her chin length black hair away from her face, she looked down at him, her dark eyes locking onto the scar that ran from above the boy's right eye to below his left. “He's kinda cute though.”
“Yuffie…” said the older of the girls, coming near to the bed and setting a bowl of water and a washcloth on the bedside table. She looked over the boy with her kind green eyes, she squeezed out the washcloth and dabbed it across the boy's forehead, wiping away some of the dirt that had accumulated on his face and pushed his long almond brown hair off his face. She placed her hand on his forehead, feeling for his temperature.

“Well, he's not sick, hopefully he's just unconscious and doesn't have any head injuries. I can see a few cuts on him, but he seems to be okay,” the girl said, standing back up straight.
“We found this near him too, looks like it might be his, judging from his necklace,” said a spiky blonde haired man. He had walked in not too long after Cid had laid the boy down on the bed. He was holding up a long sword, but it wasn't entirely a sword, it had the handle of a gun and from the end of the handle, attached by a short length of thick chain links, was a small pendant. The older girl looked at the necklace around the boy's neck that the man had mentioned. The silver lion heads matched.

“I'll hold onto this for him,” the man said, placing the weapon awkwardly into one of the large holsters on his back, which were normally for his own blades which were much larger than the revolver-sword hybrid. “Aerith, when he wakes up, tell him I have it.”
“I'll do that, Cloud,” the brown haired girl, Aerith, said as the blonde man known as Cloud left.

~A few hours later

As a low groan sounded from the other side of the room, Aerith turned to see the boy that Cid had brought in pushing himself up into a sitting position. Aerith smiled as the boy looked up at her as she neared.
“Feeling better?”

The boy's blue-gray eyes looked up at her, in what Aerith knew most people would perceive as a glare, but she'd been around silent types long enough to know better.
She only smiled. The boy broke the silence.
“Are you…Aerith?” He asked. She blinked.
“Have we met before?” She asked.
“Not as far as I know,” the boy said, shaking his head.
“Then how do you know my name?”
“…someone told me.”
“Oh, I see. Could you perhaps describe this person?” Aerith said, smiling a little. The boy shook his head.
“I didn't see him, I only heard his voice.”

“Oh…well, that's okay. But I think we should-“
“Where's my gunblade?” The boy asked, his eyes almost frantically searching the room.
“Your gunblade…? Oh, you mean the weapon that had a lion pendant on it, right?” The boy nodded.
“A friend of mine is holding it for you,” Aerith said. “But, we should look to see if you've got any more serious wounds.”
“I might have a cracked rib or two,” the boy said, relenting and pulling his shirt over his head. He wouldn't even be this complacent with Dr. Kadowaki, but something about the women before him calmed him, kind of like…a mom would…not that he even knew what that felt like.
“And how would you have gotten those?”
“From that black monster…” the boy trailed off.
“Black monster…you mean the Heartless, don't you?” Aerith said, gently feeling around his ribs.
“Heartless?” The boy repeated.
“Yes, dark beings that lack hearts. They go to other worlds and take the hearts of anyone they find. Eventually, they take the heart of that world and then that world simply disappears.”
“Seifer…”
“What?”
“…nothing.”

Aerith looked at him skeptically but finished with her examination.
“Well, it doesn't seem like you have any seriously bad wounds, just a few cuts and bruises. You'll be better in no time.”
“Where's that guy…Cloud?”
“Oh, he's probably over at the bailey. Just let me bandage up those cuts and I'll walk you over there.”

As Aerith put several bandages on the cuts on the boy's arms and face, she laughed a little.
“Oh, you know what? I never even asked you your name.”
“It's Squall.”
“Squall? Well, it's nice to meet you, Squall.”
