-Chapter One-

Kairi smiled out at the ocean as she thought of her date with Sora.
The young Keyblade wielder had proposed to her and she had
happily accepted.

"You seem to be in an extra good mood today," Riku noticed as he
joined her. "What's up?"

"Sora and I are engaged," Kairi replied. She expected Riku to say
he was happy for them. She could not have been more wrong.

"You WHAT?!" he exploded.

"Riku..." Kairi began. But he cut her off.

"Shut up," he snarled at her. "Just shut up and go away. I never
want to see you again!"

"Riku?!"

"I said SHUT UP!" Riku screamed at her. "Get out of my life!
I hate you! You've stolen what was most precious to me, so I
never want to see you again as long as I live!"

Tears ran down Kairi's face as she ran off, leaving Riku alone on
the shore, a tear leaving a wet trail down his face.

"Kairi?" Sora asked, looking up from his lunch with King Mickey.
"Kairi! What happened?"

"I told Riku about our engagement," Kairi told them. "He says he
hates me. That I stole something precious from him, and he never
wants to see me again. Sora, I'm not a thief. I swear, I've never
stolen anything from Riku!"

"I know what the matter is," the King said quietly.

Sora and Kairi both turned to face him. "Tell me!" they both said.

"Welp," the King replied, "it's something I noticed when we were
fighting the Heartless. Riku always protected Sora, no matter how
risky it was."

"That's true," Sora said. "But what's that got to do with him turning
on Kairi? And why would he accuse her of stealing? She's never
stolen anything from him."

"He doesn't see it that way," the King explained.

"What does he think she took?" Maybe we can find the real thief."

"When he talks about Kairi stealing something precious from him,"
explained the King, "he means you, Sora."

"Me?" Sora blinked. "But, just 'cause Kairi and I are getting married
doesn't mean I don't want to be his friend anymore."

"Sora," Kairi said, "don't you see? Riku is in love with you."

"Riku's..." Sora looked down at the beach where Riku was standing.
Riku looked back for a moment, then headed for his favorite spot on
the curved trunk of the paopu tree. "Kairi, I..."

"It's okay," Kairi replied. "You need to think about it. I understand."

"Excuse me," the King said, as he got up and headed over in the
direction that Riku had gone.

Riku tied one end of the rope he had removed from the raft he'd
helped build before the darkness had come to the tree trunk, giving
it a good strong tug to make sure it wouldn't come loose. Then he
tied the other end around his neck.

"Goodbye, Sora," he said, sadly. "I'm nothing without you." He
stepped off the bent tree trunk. But the expected strangulation
and snapping of his neck never came. Instead, he hit the water and
came up spluttering and wonder what the heck had happened.

"Looks like I got here just in time." King Mickey declared.

"You cut the rope."

"Yep."

"My life is over," Riku told the King. "Why can't you let me die?"

"Don't give up just yet," the King replied. "You never know what
might happen."

"Kairi told me what's going to happen," Riku said, unhappily. "She
and Sora are getting married. You know something? When Sora
got down on his knees and took my hand back then, I'd hoped he
was going to propose to me. It broke my heart when he didn't. But
I hoped that one day he would." He looked down at the rope that was
still tied around his neck. "Now that day will never come. I can't live
with that."

"You don't have to."
