-Chapter 4: -
"Dad," Darkheart asked King Mickey, one night as the royal family sat
down to a cozy picnic dinner. "might I ask you something?"
It was fifteen years since Queen Minnie had found the child. In all
that time, she had wondered about the well-being of the young man, Riku,
who had tried to end his life on the terrible night of the Prince's
conception.
Although Darkheart fortunately favoured Riku in appearance, there were
traces of Maleficent in his looks as well. His face was slightly more
angular than Riku's and he was slightly taller than Riku had been at
his age.
"Sure," King Mickey replied, helping himself to a bit of salad.
Darkheart swallowed the bite of chicken he'd just taken and took a sip
of his lemonade. "I've been wondering about my parents. I mean, I know
that you and Mom have raised me, and you've been the best Mom and Dad I
could ever have, but..." He looked apologetically at Queen Minnie.
"I understand," the Queen smiled, "Anybody would be curious about a
thing like that." She took another bite from the ear of corn she was
holding.
"I won't lie to you, my son," King Mickey said, solemnly. "This is going
to be hard for you to hear, but, your mother is Maleficent."
"Maleficent?! That green-skinned sorceress with the inferiority complex?"
Darkheart frowned. "You're joking?! Ugh," he pushed his plate away. "I
think I just lost my appetite. So, who's my father, then? He must have
been as foul and as ugly as she was to have a child with her."
"I doubt very much that he wanted to have a child with her," Mickey told
his son. "He was a good man, and he loved only one woman. And that wonam
was not Maleficent. His name was Riku. He was a good man. In fact, when
he was just a little older than you are now, he and his best friend, Sora,
defeated the darkness that tried to overcome our world."
"Sora," Darkheart asked. "The swordsmith?"
"The very same," Queen Minnie said as she collected the plates. "You
should pay him a visit. I'm sure he'd love to tell you about your father."
"I'll go see him first thing tomorrow," Darkheart decided.
*****
Sora smiled at the satisfying hiss of steam the water made as the sword he had just finished making.
The little bell that Kairi had bought for the shop door tinkled softly as the door opened and the Prince walked in.
"Good morning, sir," Sora told him. He, like everyone else in town, had been told about the Prince, but had never seen him. "What can I do for you today?"
"I want to know about a friend of yours. A man named Riku."
A tear came easily to Sora's face. To this day, he still missed Riku. "He was my dearest friend. More loyal than any other person I'd ever met. At least I thought he was. Until the day he simply disappeared without so much as a note. He didn't even bother rescuing Kairi. Just left her there to die. If I hadn't found her in time, she probably would have. Now, it's your turn to answer a question. Why are you asking me about this?"
Prince Darkheart pulled the hood of his cloak away from his face.
"Riku?!" Sora nearly fell over.
Darkheart shook his head. "Prince Darkheart. Riku was my father."
"How is that possible? He never got with Kairi."
"My mother was Maleficent."
Sora dropped the bag of tools he was carrying. It would have broken his foot if the Prince hadn't levitated it just in time.
"Riku," Sora sat down heavily on the floor, "how could you?"
"My father, King Mickey, didn't say it," Darkheart told Sora, "but I think Maleficent must have raped my father. Riku tried to kill himself the night I was made."
"Where is he now?" Sora asked.
"I don't know. Father said he opened a random portal under him to save his life, but he doesn't know what place or time it went to."
"He didn't ditch me," Sora smiled. "Maybe he'll come home some day."
"Maybe," Darkheart agreed. "I'd like to meet him some day."
"I'd like to see him again, too."
