Kingdom Hearts Fan Fiction ❯ Sanctuary ❯ prologue ( Chapter 1 )

[ X - Adult: No readers under 18. Contains Graphic Adult Themes/Extreme violence. ]

Disclaimer: I don't own Kingdom Hearts II or any of its characters. Most of my work was lost in the server change but I hope to get it back up soon. This is a new story for you all. I'm not a huge fan of Sora/Kairi or Roxas/Namine. In fact I hate both Kairi and Namine. But in the first chapter of this fic there are very slight hints of it. If you don't like Kairi or Namine bashing don't read this. Other warnings include language, violence, and lemon warnings. Oh and any warnings I forgot to mention. This takes place directly after the ending of KH2 so there are spoilers for those who haven't played the game yet.

So much had changed since Riku and Sora returned to the islands. Sora and Kairi were dating. Sora and Riku both started school. But Riku was more a prisoner now than he was when all of this had started. He mostly stayed on the Paopu Island sitting in the Paopu Tree. Sora and Kairi almost seemed to forget about him, which didn't surprise the silver haired teen.

School was already out for the day and Riku sat up in his tree. He glanced over to see Sora and Kairi walking down the beach holding hands. It was just another twist of the knife to what was left of Riku's broken heart. He hated every moment they were together but he never said anything. Sora, the love of his life, was happy with his so-called best friend. Riku didn't understand it. He didn't know why everyone said he was missed yet nothing changed when he was back on the islands. This was the entire reason he wanted off the god-forsaken place. Riku glanced over his shoulder to see Sora pulling Kairi into his arms to place a gentle kiss on her mouth that she soon turned into something much deeper. Riku looked away and closed his eyes to fight his tears.

What no one seemed to realize was that when Sora seen Kairi he kept seeing Namine. It was the same when Kairi looked at Sora. It wasn't Sora she seen, it was Roxas.

Sora couldn't put his finger on it but every time he was with Kairi his heart cracked a bit more. It was almost as if his emotions towards her wasn't directed towards her yet they were. There were times Sora couldn't deny he just wanted to run to Riku. Roxas' emotions weren't directed to Namine either but it was like his mind was clouded and he couldn't remember who his emotions really belonged to. Neither Sora nor Roxas really felt complete and neither of them could figure out why.

Sora kissed Kairi back slowly wrapping his arms around her. Kairi's eyes closed but Sora kept his eyes open. He looked over Kairi's shoulder and looked towards where Riku was watching them Sora's expression glazed over. Riku noticed the glassy look in Sora's eyes and he frowned. Kairi pulled back from the kiss first. She ran her hands through Sora's hair before she looked over her shoulder at Riku. Riku stared back at her with an impassive expression. Kairi seemed to give a slow smile towards Riku as her hands started running down Sora's chest. The look she had on her face was almost as if she was gloating. Riku narrowed his eyes pushing down the urge to walk over and punch her in the mouth. Unfortunately Riku could hear Kairi talking to Sora from where he was. He was starting to think that just maybe he was better off where he was than on the islands anymore.

“We'll be together forever right Sora?” Kairi asked in a sweet voice. Sora looked at her and nodded silently almost as if he was completely out of it. Kairi looked back over to Riku and smirked her eyes saying what she really wanted to say. Sora was hers and Riku would never have him. Riku glared over at the girl he thought was his friend and just turned away from them.

Riku could feel the darkness creeping back into his heart. What was left of it anyways. He tuned Sora and Kairi completely out and stared off ahead of him.

Riku lowered his eyes as he started to think what it was that he had fought so hard for. “I don't know why I'm even here. Why did I even fight the darkness anyway? What was the point? So I could see the one thing I was fighting for with that ungrateful bitch? I've lost everything. I should just give in to the darkness. Just fade back into it. No one would miss me much.” Riku thought bitterly.

Riku was interrupted from his thoughts though when the ground shook violently. Kairi gripped on to Sora's hand clinging to him as he swayed from the violent shaking. Riku jumped up from the Paopu tree and he jumped off the island before running towards Sora and Kairi. It was the only time Riku was actually acknowledged since their return.

“Riku! What's going on?!” Kairi screamed before everything went still again. Riku didn't answer her and he just looked around. Sora seemed to snap out of it and he untangled his hand from Kairi's to run over to Riku. Kairi stared at Sora and was about to reach out to him when Heartless started appearing all over the island.

Riku looked around before he scowled. He immediately summoned his Keyblade and Sora took his cue to summon his. Kairi watched the two boys before she decided that she would fight too. She summoned her Keyblade running up to Sora taking a semi defensive position. Riku looked over to Kairi wanting nothing more than to scoff at her. He realized that giving her a Keyblade was a major mistake. The girl couldn't even wield a Keyblade that well.

Riku looked at Sora and Sora just nodded narrowing his eyes. Riku and Sora took off running towards the heartless but they were stopped half way there. The ground started shaking again this time it was so violent that it was breaking off in areas. Sora fell back unable to keep his balance and as the ground shook more heartless appeared but Nobodies started appearing among the heartless. Riku looked around before he ran over to Sora. He stopped in his tracks when a womanly figure appeared. The sky had darkened and there were more heartless appearing than the three of them together could defeat. The heartless were starting to destroy anything they got their hands on. The womanly figure couldn't be seen that clearly except Riku could hear the clank of metal and the flow of a cape behind her. Riku seen where she was walking to and he ran over to Sora only to get flung back almost effortlessly by the woman. She walked up to Sora her face masked by what looked like a suit of armor. She summoned a Keyblade bringing it above her head as if she was going to strike Sora. Sora stared up at her and brought his own Keyblade up but he wasn't fast enough. Everything went white and the last thing that could be heard was duel screams of Sora's name coming from Riku and Kairi.

Two years later..

Two years ago I never would have thought this place would have fallen. But here I am. Standing in the ruins of Disney Castle. The balance of the worlds completely changed in just two years. There were only certain worlds left to tell the tale. The rest are just wasted battlefields. I felt a cold breeze blowing by blowing my black coat around. I pulled the hood further up to hide my face and the strands of my hair.

I surveyed the damage before I started walking. I'm one of the last of a dying breed. The Keyblade masters. Two years ago Destiny Islands was completely wiped off the map. Riku and Sora have disappeared. The Organization has come back, yet it's unknown just what side they're on. The heartless have been divided down the middle. The Knights, as we've come to call them, kill anyone who can wield a Keyblade. They're Keyblade masters themselves. But their intentions have never really been researched. It's a battle for survival.

I walked past the ruined courtyard to find shattered pieces of King Mickey's Keyblade. I knelt down and closed my eyes mourning for the King and Queen. After a few moments I stood up and started walking again. I've been on the run since the islands. The knights know of my existence. I'm just a shadow among the organization and the heartless seek me out to help them in this brutal war.

I stopped though when I seen heartless start to appear. They jumped around me before one of them jumped up to me. I just glanced at them from the side of my eyes. Before the heartless even got to scratch at me, I had a Keyblade out and the heartless were already dissipating from my attack. The other heartless came at me and I drew a second Keyblade, I began twirling them in my hands as if I was born with them. I didn't have a chance to attack because what looked like to be some kind of projectile weapon flew by slicing through the heartless. I stared before I looked around looking for the owner.
“Roxas! Get moving! They'll find you here!” A voice called out of nowhere. I looked around frantically recognizing the voice. My hair was hanging down my face before I decided to take who ever was helping me's advice. I took off running before I narrowed my eyes.

When I thought I was well away from the heartless I looked back behind me. It wasn't as if I couldn't have taken the heartless myself. It was keeping my identity secret. I panted a bit before I leaned down with my hands on my knees to catch my breath. I looked up to see another cloaked figure much like myself. He walked right up to me and I went to draw the keyblades again. His hand stopped me before I seen under his cloak. I froze and stared. It couldn't be! I knew him. I had watched him disappear.

“Hey don't look so shocked to see me Blue Eyes.” He said. I swayed on my feet before all I could see was black and I fell back with his name on my lips.

“Axel..”
