"Happy eighth birthday, boys! Make a wish and blow out the candles!"
Roxas was holding onto Sora's hand, Sora obviously being intimidated by all the people who'd come over to celebrate their birthday. Since Roxas could remember, Sora had always been the scaredy cat, while he was the brave and adventerous one. Though, he had to admit that sometimes it was Sora that got him into trouble.
But, that was why their mother didn't like him. Sora was sickly, and despite that, he loved to play with Roxas, oftentimes ending in Sora having to stay in bed for the following days to recouperate. Their mother would fawn over Sora, making sure her "pride and joy" was well taken care of. Sometimes she'd even fall asleep with him, refusing to allow Roxas anywhere near the other boy for fear that Sora become even sicker than he was.
It was only after Sora was resting that his mothers fury bloomed. The screaming, followed by hits. A few times eve assaulted sexually (though back than he hadn't known that). Their mother blammed Roxas for Sora's illness, and Roxas never understood 'til the day his mother spat, "I hate you. You're so much like your father that I wish you'd just disappear and leave me and my child alone!" To have your mother hate you, and to think of you as not her own would hurt any child, and Roxas was no different.
But now wasn't the time for that. Sora was waiting to blow out their candles. Roxas grinned and nodded his head.
"One..."
"Two..."
"THREE!"
As the two shouted the last number, they blew out the eight candles that adorned the cake, watching as they went out immediately. Kaya, their mother, smiled brightly, hugging Sora as she shoved Roxas out of the way.
"Here, Sora honey. Have some cake."
Sora didn't want cake however. The moment his hand was forced from Roxas', he'd begun to panic. Luckily, Roxas was quick. In a few moments his hand was firmly around Sora's again, calming the brunette, and stalling the tears that had been threatening to fall.
Kaya was not amused.
"Roxas! Go to your room!"
"Okay..."
"But mommy! Roxas didn't do anything bad!"
"It's alright, Sora. Come on, the cake's good. I made sure that I got your favorite kind!"
Which was another sign of her single-minded devotion to Sora and Sora alone. Roxas hated chocolate cake, while Sora loved it. The cake that their mother had gotten was chocolate.
Sora was confused. He glanced between the cake and Roxas and then smiled to his mother, squeezing Roxas' hand tighter.
"I'm gonna go play with Roxy, mommy. It's our birthday and I don't want him to be lonely!"
Kaya opened her mouth to protest, but Sora was already leading Roxas out of the room. Roxas smile innocently, although Sora had done exactly as he thought he would. Roxas knew that Sora would take his side over his mothers because Sora knew how his mother treated Roxas when she thought that Sora wasn't looking. He allowed Sora to pull him from the crowded room.
Once they were inside, Roxas shut and locked the door, already hearing their mother scream and destroy most of their brand new things. Roxas was used to her behaving this way, so it didn't phase him. Instead, he walked to his bed and reached into a drawer, pulling out a coloring book and some crayons.
Sora however was still standing by the door, listening in fear. After a particularly loud screech, Sora bolted from the door and onto Roxas' bed. He huddled close to Roxas, shivering.
"Roxy...what's wrong with mommy?"
Of course Roxas knew, but he couldn't tell his younger brother the real reason, instead he made something up as fast as he could.
"Mommy's just playing a game with the other adults. She's screaming because she's losing, that's all."
"Oh."
Sora accepted that answer, lifting a crayon and starting to color in the book Roxas had gotten for him. He hummed lightly, purring when Roxas began to brush his hair lightly. He loved it when Roxas was showing him attention like this, since it was such a rare occurance with their mother.
Whenever their mom was around, Roxas tended to stay away from him, and it hurt. He knew that Roxas knew that, but still, Roxas made no move to change anything. But, when they were together, Sora felt safe and loved. Blinking, he yawned, not realizing how tired he'd been, the crayon slowly slipping out of his hand and onto the floor.
Roxas watched, then slowly crawled off the bed, bending over to pick up the crayon. Smiling, he dropped it back into its container and them, and the book, away.
"C'mon, little brother. Let's get you into your pj's and into bed."
Sora whined lightly, but willingly stripped (with Roxas' help), putting the sky-blue pajama's on, his former clothes being tossed into a corner by the blonde. Roxas than stripped and pulled on his matching yellow ones. Making sure that their door was still locked, Roxas climbed into his bed, moving over so that Sora could climb in as well. The brunette wasted no time as he jumped in, snuggling up to his twin, already drifting off.
"Roxy...?"
"Yeah?"
"When mommy has the baby, do you think she'll let you play with me more?"
Roxas was silent for a few moments, then sighed inwardly, flashing a smile to Sora.
"Maybe."
Sora however didn't hear him for he'd already falled asleep. Roxas leaned over the sleeping form, flicking off the light before settling, his arms wrapping around the youngers waist, holding him close.
"I hops so, anyway."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day the two were woken by their mother banging on the door. Roxas was the first to sit up, blinking blankly at the door, quickly shushing a slowly-becoming-concious Sora. Smiling, he climbed out of the bed, taking his time in getting to the door, knowing this would only further piss his mother off. He opened it, the same smile on his lips.
"Good morning, mother."
Kaya stood there, her eyes narrowed, mouth clentched shut as she reached in, grabbing Roxas by the hair, tugging him out harshly.
Roxas offered no resistance, but this seemed to only anger his mother even further as she gripped the blonde locks tighter, nearly ripping strands out. A few harsh tugs later and Roxas made a soft soun of pain, and his mother smirked.
"I don't know how you managed to fool your brother into thinking that you were a good boy, but I'll do whatever it takes for him to see the real you. Nothing but a lousy piece of dirt on the bottom of his sneakers!"
Throwing the eight year old into the closet, she laughed. The sound sickened Roxas. She was really pleased with how she had treated him. Quickly she slammed the door, keeping Roxas in the dark from that moment on.
"You're not to make a sound. I'll tell Sora that you went to your aunts for the day. If you're lucky, I might let you out tonight after he's asleep."
Roxas could hear her walking away, and he sighed. Because the abuse had been going on for so long, the young blonde hardly seemed young in his maerisms, nor his behavior. Thus, as Roxas sat there in silence rearranging himself to be more comfortable, he thought not of his own well being, but of Sora's.
Whenever Roxas upset his mother (though it was hardly his fault) she thought it fit to punish him in any way, shape, or form. Most of the time he was beaten, a few times he was even made to touch men that his mother had hired, having no choice but to let them do as they wished to his young body. But, for him to have been punished by the closet "method"...
This punishment was reserved for when Roxas had upset his mother so much that she wanted to tease him by allowing him to hear Sora, to know that Sora was there, but not be able to play with him, to respond to him in any way.
Roxas hated her for that. He growled, a sound that an eight year old should never have to make unless he was playing zoo. Sometimes, Roxas thought that that's what his life really was. His mother was the zoo keeper, and Sora was the tourist, while Roxas was the wild animal that had to be caged to protect the visitors.
Hearing Sora's soft footsteps coming his way, he fell silent. He was tempted to pull his twin inside the closet with him, but instead let his twin pass in peace. There was no sense in getting Sora hurt because of him. That was something Roxas never wanted.
"Mommy, where's Roxy?"
"Auntie came to take him for the day. I'm sorry, Sora. It's just us today, baby."
"Oh."
Roxas smirked. Sora was obviously not thrilled at being left alone with his mother. He heard Sora take a step, and then turn around once more, heading back towards their shared room.
"I'm gonna go play with our new toys than."
Roxas knew this was code for, "I want nothing to do with you and I would rather be alone in my room than with you", and it made Roxas swell with pride to know that Sora was not fooled by their mothers tricks. Of course, the only further angered their mother.
"Of course. I'm really sorry that Roxas had to go."
"It's okay."
The sound of their bedroom door shutting made Roxas smile even brighter. At least for awhile. It was suddenly too quiet in the house. For Roxas, that meant trouble. He curled further into the corner of the closet, slightly afraid of what might happen.
Then the sound that would change the twins life forever.
"Sora! Get mommy the phone! The baby's coming!"
Sora's feet pounded upon the floor as he rushed past the closet. He snatched the phone, handing it to his mother.
Kaya's fingers moved over the buttons rapidly. She spoke quickly into the reciever, hung up, and then dialed another number. This conversation took longer, but when she was finally done, she tossed the phone and pushed Sora out of her way as she stood up. Hobbling towards the front door, she slid on her shoes, opening it just as a tall man came barreling down the corridor. They kissed, hushed words being exchanged before the house door slammed.
Sora and Roxas had been left behind.
"Roxas...mommy's gone. You can come out now."
The blonde in the closet gave a confused noise before he crawled out, blinking up at the brunette.
"How did you know...?"
"Mom kept glaring at the closet, and I didn't hear auntie, so I knew she was lying. How come she left us alone, and who was that guy?"
"The baby. Mama left us for the baby. That guy must've been the baby's daddy..."
Sora's eyes watered, his lower lip trembling. Roxas reached over and brought his twin close, tumbling them both into the closet. Carefully, they manuvered themselves to the back, arms wrapped around each other tightly. More for Sora's benefit than Roxas'. All was silent except for Sora's sobs. He didn't like the idea of being abandoned.
Roxas was the first to hear the front door being knocked, followed a few moments by the door handle being turned. Quickly, Roxas shut the closet door soundlessly, moving in front of Sora to hide him from whoever the person was.
The front door was opened.
"Roxas? Sora?"
Sora squeaked and opened the closet door, tripping over Roxas in the process before he finally toppled out, landing at their grandmothers feet.
"Gramma!"
The twins grandmother lived only ten minutes away, thus neither boy was shocked to find her there. And as such, Sora threw his arms around his grandmothers neck, hugging her tightly, a bright smile on his face.
"Are you gonna watch us while mommy's gone?"
Roxas finally climbed out, blinking a bit as he kept his distance. Unfortunately however, Sora had other plans as he grabbed hold of Roxas' hand, tugging the blonde over to their grandmother. Said blonde knew at once that something was wrong, though he kept this to himself.
"As a matter of fact, I'm going to be taking you to the hospital to visit your mother."
The twins followed the elderly woman out of the house, holding each others hands tightly. They sat in the back, their hands clentched together tightly as their grandmother shot them sad glances every few minutes. When she had done it the fifth time, Roxas became even more convinced that something wasn't what it seemed to be.
"Grandma, something going to happen isn't it."
Their grandmother didn't say a word, just continued to drive, finally pulling into the hospital parking lot. She took a deep breathe and climbed out of the car, signaling the two boys to get out and follow her. Roxas paled. Something tradgic was about to occur, and he knew that he couldn't stop it.
The second that Roxas was out, Sora latched his hand to the blondes. He may not have realized what was wrong, but he did know that something wasn't right. Nothing scared his brother, and Roxas was scared.
However, the elder of the twins feigned a smile, hoping to reassure the brunette as he squeezed his hand, walking after their grandmother at a steady pace.
Sora wasn't fooled, but went along with it anyway.
When they reached the waiting room, the twins sat down, their grandmother walking to the booth to speak with the receptionist.
"Roxy, why does gramma seem so worried?"
"I'm...not sure, Sora."
The two fell silent, waiting for news. It wasn't much longer before their grandmother came back to them.
"Come on, Sora. We're going to see your mommy and your new baby sister."
Blinking, Sora stood, tugging Roxas with him. However, their grandmother stopped him.
"No. Only you, Sora."
"But, gramma!"
"Sora, come along. Now!"
The twins grandmother tugged, and Sora was forced to either be split in half or release Roxas' hand. Then brunettes eyes watered as their hands slipped apart. He didn't know it, but that would be the last time he ever saw his twin.
Once Sora and his grandmother had disappeared behind the swinging doors, Roxas felt arms around him, lifting him off the ground.
"We're leaving now, Roxas."
There was no resistance on Roxas' part. He knew there was nothing that he could do. And thus, he let his mothers boyfriend take him out of the hospital. Let him take him away. Away from Sora.
The blonde shed no tears, gave no visible sign that he was distressed. He didn't speak, not even to reply to the mans questions.
When the man stopped in front of a church, Roxas' heart sank. He knew what that meant. He finally spoek, just as the man was about to get out.
"Don't bother. I know. So mom hates me so much that she's willing to get rid of me? Tell my mother I'm sorry for being like my father. Like someone I don't even know."
Roxas than climbed out of the truck, shutting the door. He looked at the church, a forlorn smile splayed upon his lips. The truck sped away before Roxas had even taken a step.
Taking a deep breathe, Roxas began the walk towards the large church door. He wasn't scared, nor was he worried. Instead, with each new step he took, his heart melted into darkness. He hated his mother. He hated the man who'd gotten his mother pregnant. He even hated his grandmother for taking Sora away without allowing him to say good-bye.
When Roxas' hand finally met the door, knocking with all his frustration, Roxas had finally blocked off any emotions aside from hatred. Only one thing still had light and love in his eyes.
Sora.
Sora would always be his light, even if they were apart.
The nun who opened the door blinked, smiling at the young boy.
"What can I do for you, young one?"
Roxas looked up, tears in his eyes, finally breaking down.
"My mother doesn't want me..."
"Come on, Sora. We're going to see your mommy and your new baby sister."
Blinking, Sora stood, tugging Roxas with him. However, their grandmother stopped him.
"No. Only you, Sora."
"But, gramma!"
"Sora, come along. Now!"
The twins grandmother tugged, and Sora was forced to either be split in half or release Roxas' hand. Then brunettes eyes watered as their hands slipped apart. He didn't know it, but that would be the last time he ever saw his twin.
Once Sora and his grandmother had disappeared behind the swinging doors, Roxas felt arms around him, lifting him off the ground.
"We're leaving now, Roxas."
There was no resistance on Roxas' part. He knew there was nothing that he could do. And thus, he let his mothers boyfriend take him out of the hospital. Let him take him away. Away from Sora.
The blonde shed no tears, gave no visible sign that he was distressed. He didn't speak, not even to reply to the mans questions.
When the man stopped in front of a church, Roxas' heart sank. He knew what that meant. He finally spoek, just as the man was about to get out.
"Don't bother. I know. So mom hates me so much that she's willing to get rid of me? Tell my mother I'm sorry for being like my father. Like someone I don't even know."
Roxas than climbed out of the truck, shutting the door. He looked at the church, a forlorn smile splayed upon his lips. The truck sped away before Roxas had even taken a step.
Taking a deep breathe, Roxas began the walk towards the large church door. He wasn't scared, nor was he worried. Instead, with each new step he took, his heart melted into darkness. He hated his mother. He hated the man who'd gotten his mother pregnant. He even hated his grandmother for taking Sora away without allowing him to say good-bye.
When Roxas' hand finally met the door, knocking with all his frustration, Roxas had finally blocked off any emotions aside from hatred. Only one thing still had light and love in his eyes.
Sora.
Sora would always be his light, even if they were apart.
The nun who opened the door blinked, smiling at the young boy.
"What can I do for you, young one?"
Roxas looked up, tears in his eyes, finally breaking down.
"My mother doesn't want me..."
