Part One
~
The island sat rooted in an ocean of blue-gray mist. No moon, no stars...nothing reflected in the black waves that broke against the tall stone cliffs. A chilly wind rustling the trees and the crash of waves were the only sounds. No birds called, no crickets chirped in the endless misty gray. Time stood frozen. The sun did not rise or set. There was no day or night, only mist and occasionally a drizzling rain.
~
At the heart of the island stood the burned out hulk of a once magnificent mansion surrounded by the remains of a long forgotten garden. Stone benches and statuary peeked out from behind overgrown bushes and tangled rose vines that held no flowers, only thorns.
~
Kneeling on the ground behind one of the tall-backed stone benches was a creature made of pure shadow. It vaguely held the shape of a raven with massive black wings arching over it and a feathered tail that swept the ground behind it. The long feathers were dull and worn with age. However, it also had two arms and a human head with long black hair, though feathers speared through the long strands. A long ragged robe of shifting shadows clothed its form, the sleeves rolled to the shoulders. Glowing yellow eyes in a pale handsome face narrowed on the long knife it wielded in its clawed hand, neatly and swiftly butchering a carcass into neat pieces that it set out on the stone flags.
~
Its task finally completed, the creature flicked his wrist gracefully and the knife evaporated into silver spoke. A smile literally cracked its face in half, revealing a mouthful of serrated teeth. It spoke with a smooth and cultured voice. "Dinner is served." It lifted a clawed hand and plunged it into its own stomach. The creature grimaced and grunted in obvious discomfort. However, only darkness dripped from its self-inflected wound to splatter on the ground.
~
It rooted around in its belly wincing and hissing. "Where...? Ah, there you are." With a sound of wet suction, it pulled its hand out holding a moist and soft ball that glowed with bright blue light and steamed in the chilly air. It was small, barely filling the center of his palm. The ragged wound in its belly closed leaving nothing but a rent in the shadowy robes. It barely noticed. Its attention was riveted to the softly glowing blue-white soul in its palms.
~
When the creature had devoured it, it had been much larger, swollen and throbbing with rich blue-black and red-purple swirls. The colors of anger, hate, and suffering so rich and pure it had gleamed like a jewel. The flavor of it had been beyond what he'd expected; definitely worth the trouble he'd gone through to cultivate it.
~
No creature hated so purely, so thoroughly, or so easily as a child.
~
Sadly, all traces of taint were gone from it - consumed. The creature closed both hands around the blue light then closed its yellow eyes. An incantation spilled from its lips.
~
A high pitched sound came from the little soul, as though it were screaming.
~
The creature finished its incantation and smiled. "What? You thought your torment had ended?" The creature shook its head slowly and tisked. "The flavor of your torment is simply too delicious to taste only once." It parted its clawed hands to reveal a panting blue-black raven on its back, its wings spread limp across its palms. "I intend to devour you for eternity. But first..." It set the raven on the crumbling flagstones before the meat the creature had butchered for its first meal. "Bon appetite!"
~
The raven opened bright blue eyes and focused on the bloody feast before it. With a hoarse squawk, the small raven hopped forward to peck at the meat. After downing a few pieces, it began to grow at a rapid pace. Two black arms with hands appeared to grab at the meat and the head changed to that of a human. The drooling mouth opened to reveal serrated teeth. It tore the meat from the bone, barely stopping to chew before it swallowed.
~
It ate, and grew, gaining human legs with clawed toes. However, wings remained at its shoulders and a feathered tail spilled from the base of its naked spine to brush the ground. By the time almost of the meat had been consumed it closely resembled its amused sire, though stark naked and far smaller. As its meal progressed, the human portion of its form turned pale as milk, though its face remained unformed and its hair remained the color of ink. Male genitalia appeared and his limbs smoothed into the graceful lines of a youth.
~
When nothing was left of his meal but bones and stains on the stones, the childe turned his sapphire blue eyes on his sire.
~
Seated cross-legged on the flags, his sire held out its last offering, a head with the top of its skull removed. A spoon of solid silver stuck out of the contents. "Ready for dessert?" It scooped out a generous portion with the spoon and held it out. "Say, ah..."
~
Growling, the childe made a grab for the head.
~
The creature pulled the head away with one hand. "No, no, no, this is my personal pleasure." It pushed the spoon to the childe's lips.
~
The childe opened his mouth and accepted the spoon, then clamped hard with his teeth. He winced in obvious pain.
~
Its sire chuckled. "That's what you get for biting the spoon." The creature pulled the spoon from the childe's lips to scoop out another bite. "Say, ah." Long minutes passed while the creature fed spoonful after spoonful to its childe. Eventually, the skull was emptied of all its contents.
~
With a final lick of his perfect Cupid's bow lips, the childe's sapphire blue eyes fluttered closed, long black lashes brushing the pale plump cheeks of its newly formed angelically sweet face. With a soft sated sigh. It fell over, fast asleep curled inside his black wings.
~
The creature lifted the childe and laid it out on the seat of the bench, setting neatly folded clothes under its head as a pillow. It stroked the child's over-long black hair, and delicately beautiful face. "Sleep well." It bared its serrated teeth in a chilling smile. "And dream of all that you have lost."
