I twitched in my sleep. Something is tickling my foot! I tried to kick it away, but it wouldn't work. Drawing my foot closer to myself, I groaned as whatever it was started attacking my other foot. I drew that up too to fit into a little ball. A giggle made its way through my sleep fogged brain and I dragged my head out from the pillow I'd burrowed into and blinked groggily at the sight of Sheik with his cowl off and noted that the quilt had gotten tangled up around my upper half, leaving the lower half of my body uncovered.
“Good morning. It's good you're finally awake. Did you sleep well?” I blinked again and my brain finally registered the feather sitting in Sheik's hand. “Were you tickling my feet?” I asked slowly and incredulously. Sheik smiled and with a poof the feather was suddenly gone. I narrowed my eyes as he feigned innocence and I sat up and tackled him, determined to get him back.
Unsurprisingly, my attack didn't even faze him as he deftly dodged each and every attempt at getting to his sides so I could tickle him, and he hadn't even moved from the spot where he sat! I gave up with a huff and asked, “What kind of way is that to wake up somebody?” Sheik's reply, “The way you wake up a person who didn't respond to being called or nudged.” Mollified, I said, “Oh.”
Sitting there, I took in Sheik's appearance without the cowl. You really wouldn't know he's Princess Zelda. Blonde sandy hair sticks out in front of his maroon eyes and his sharp chin and slightly boyish features hinted at nothing of a princess, let alone a female. He just looked to me like a guy in his late teens, albeit a very pretty guy. I bet girls swoon over him wherever he goes. Sheik's head tilted and he asked, “What are you staring at?”
Startled, I averted my eyes and said quickly, “Nothing! It's just… this is the first time I've seen you without your face and hair covered, that's all.” To my surprise, Sheik blushed and said, “Don't get used to it. I am a Sheikah like this after all. I have to be mysterious and hidden in shadow.” I grinned and said, “I knew it. Those lines you give Link whenever you teach him a warp song did seem a little too rehearsed.” Sheik blinked in surprise and said, “That's an interesting name for those songs…” I shrugged a little annoyed that he didn't take the bait I'd laid out for a good argument and said, “Well, that's what they do right?” Sheik nodded and answered, “Yes that is true. Speaking of which, how would you like to go see a bit of Hyrule?”
A bit of last night's conversation flashed through my mind, but I ignored it in favor of pretending I hadn't eavesdropped and asked, “Isn't that dangerous? What about Ganondorf?” Sheik stood up and answered, “Ganondorf can't detect me in this form. As for you, He wouldn't expect you to be here at all, since his minions haven't returned to him yet.” I grinned at that and asked, “They won't be coming back to him will they?” Sheik shared my grin and said, “No, they won't.”
I got up and Sheik said, “Come to the dining room when you're finished.” I nodded and pulling a change of clothes out of the dresser next to me, then went to the bathroom. I did my business and swished some water since there were no tooth brushes. I wondered what they did to keep their teeth clean. They worry about cavities too right?
Wondering over Hylian dental practices, I walked up the stairs and into the dining room to find breakfast already on the table and Sheik finishing off his share. I sat down and asked, “Where's Aunt Beast?” Sheik paused in eating for a moment, then answered, “She's currently fixing some of the magic that keeps this place hidden.” I nodded and asked, “Where is this place anyway?” Sheik smiled mysteriously and said, “If you don't know, when asked, you won't have to lie.” I raised my eyebrow at him, then shrugged and said, “Ok.”
Breakfast after that was a fairly silent affair. Not long after, Sheik got up and said, “Come. You will need a few things before we go into Hyrule.” Getting up, I followed Sheik out of the door and to the ground floor and over to a room in the corner of the building. I gaped at all the weapons on the walls in there. Half the room consisted of weapons, the other half is armor. There must be enough hardware in here for a dozen men at least!
Sheik walked up one of the shelves and pulled down a shirt of black chainmail. Turning to me and holding it up in front of me, he gave it to me and said, “Put this on under your tunic but over the undershirt.” I nodded and did as he asked. Meanwhile, Sheik went over to another shelf and handed me some gauntlets, boots, and a belt, all black. I put them all on, staring in wonder as my formerly white tunic turned midnight black.
Sheik caught my stare and said, “It's a Sheikah tunic. It's specially made to allow you to withstand high heat, breathe underwater, and be invisible outside of a certain range. No one will see you coming unless you're within fifteen paces.” I stared in wonder at the tunic and said, “That's amazing! It does everything the Goron, Zora, and Kokiri tunic are made to do!” Sheik grinned and said, “That's the idea.” He picked up some things for himself, including a new cowl which he wrapped around his head. I felt a little disappointed for it. I'd gotten used to seeing his face.
I followed Sheik over to the weapon side, where he grabbed a few thin black knives and put them in scabbards on his thighs. And a ball and chain he put into the space in between the front of his tunic and his tights. He then reached for a small short sword and after examining it, he handed it to me. I took it and looked at it myself.
Despite being plain, I admired the sword anyway. A solid black handle and pommel, with a plain silver blade completed the simple black scabbard that Sheik handed to me. The thing that really surprised me is how light the blade is. I figured it'd at least have some weight to it. I tied the scabbard to my waist the way Sheik showed me, then placed the sword in it. The weight felt comfortable, though I felt very annoyed when the blade hit the door frame on the way out of the room.
We walked back to the area in front of the stairs to find Aunt Beast waiting for us. She greeted us with a good morning and asked, “Are you heading out already?” Sheik nodded and said, “The earlier we leave, the more ground we can cover before it gets dark.” Normally, I would've asked if we were going somewhere at that point, but the conversation I'd overheard last night had me holding my tongue. `The one' they referred to can't be me can it? If it was they'd have told me before. I know Sheik said I'm important, but this `the one' business sounds a lot like a prophecy… and Sheik said there hadn't been one… no, all he said was that Ganondorf may have found a prophecy. Did that mean Sheik and Aunt Beast already knew the prophecy too?
“Matthew, hold on to me.” Startled, I grabbed hold of Sheik. Lost in my thoughts, I hadn't even noticed when Sheik and Aunt Beast had finished talking. Holding onto him, I watched as Sheik pulled a small harp out of nowhere and plucked the notes of the Minuet of the Forest. When he finished, he closed his eyes and suddenly the world grew impossibly bright. I shut my eyes tight and felt the ground beneath my feet disappear and all sense of gravity disappeared. When I felt the ground beneath my feet and the light shining through my eyelids dimmed, I took a deep breath and calmly opened my eyes.
