I groaned and blinked blearily. I was really tired of getting knocked out. It hurt! Sitting up slowly, I looked around and suddenly remembered why I'm not in a bed or behind a dumpster. Shelke… hit me… Vincent… I'm Deep Ground's prisoner. Well, at least Vincent can take them all… I hope… Lifting my hand to rub my head, I noticed a weird metal bracelet on my wrist. Looking, I found another one on my wrist. That's when I noticed my attire. No longer dressed in black, I seem to be in a white hospital gown. Everything I came in with is gone. Great…
Looking around, I somehow recognized the place. More due to the fact of the giant rack of computer equipment and body rack next to it than anything else. I'm in Shelke's lab… With shaky legs I tried to stand up but found I couldn't. I suddenly felt really woozy and almost passed out, but I sat back and closed my eyes until it passed. Just how long was I out anyway? Deciding I rather liked my life and my current state of consciousness, I decided not to try and get up and risk touching Shelke's computers. She might kill me, if I didn't pass out first from standing up.
I felt like I'd sat there forever. I just listened to the hum coming from the electronics and the sound of my stomach grumbling. Growing more bored by the second, I tried to see what might be on the glowing monitors from here, but no such luck. Sighing, I decided to risk trying to stand again. This time I was a bit more successful, though I had to use the wall as support. Moving along the wall, I shuffled over to the door. Unfortunately there was no easily discernable way to open the door other than a keypad on the wall next to it. Examining it, I tried pressing the green button on the bottom. Nothing happened. Figures. Grumbling to myself, I made my way over to the computers to look at the screens.
Unfortunately, getting over to the computers was a little more difficult than I liked, and in the end it didn't even matter because as soon as I got past the door, the darn thing opened, revealing Shelke, and bless her heart, FOOD!
Turning around fully, I grinned at her and hungrily eyed the food, my stomach announcing it's presence again in a demand to eat. Shelke raised her eyebrows and asked, “I take it you're hungry.” I nodded, not even digesting the fact that she'd spoken English with the sight of food in front of me taking my main attention. Though after she gave me the plate, and since I hadn't even bothered to try and sit, just leaned against the wall, and I took my first bite, I suddenly choked and she thumped me on the back as I tried to catch my breath. “You should eat slower.” She said. “You speak Ancient?” I gasped out. “You mean English?” She asked. I stared at her dumbfounded. She sighed and asked, “Are you dense? Why do you think you're so hungry? I just had you plugged into my neural reader for over 5 hours. I spent the time learning your past, including English. Pretty interesting stuff I found by the way.”
While Shelke was talking, she pulled me from the wall to sit back on the cot, and I continued to inhale the food like I hadn't eaten in weeks. I listened with half an ear as she continued, “Your lucky it only took me 5 hours to get all the information I needed. I was just in time to stop your friend Vincent from turning Deep Ground into a blood bath. I mean, fighting Chaos? None of us would have survived, especially considering technically, we didn't, no matter what Azul might say. We were in luck though. It wouldn't have taken Vincent that long to find us if it weren't for the fact that I disabled the transmitter he stuck on you.” Once again she whapped me on the back as I choked.
“You mean he used me as bait!?” I asked. I'm so gonna kill him. Chaos or not. Or better yet, I'll just leave it up to Tifa. I grinned and decided I'd drop that subject… for now. Shelke shrugged and said, “It was a good plan, but I'm good with electronics and a good strategist. It was kind of obvious what he was doing even if I hadn't seen him stick the transmitter on you. You don't actually strike me as very dangerous, and your memories proved me right.” After finishing the food, I eyed Shelke and asked, “So what now? Will you help us?” Shelke nodded and said, “I already found the good Professor and Nero has claimed the kill himself, despite your friend's protests. It galls him to think that the bastard would think to use his brother in such a way. Even though he's already dead…”
I shook my head trying to wrap my mind around everything happening. The first thing I asked was, “So… you know everything?” Shelke nodded. “And from what I gathered… nearly everyone else does too?” Shelke shrugged, “They wouldn't have listened to me if I hadn't. Rosso and Azul are taking turns sparring with Vincent to prove to themselves they wouldn't have been defeated by him so easily. At first… they might've been right. But Vincent was holding back a lot, especially when he revealed after the fight that thanks to you, he now completely controls his Chaos form. Thanks to you, he is now the most dangerous person on Gaia.” I scratched my head, having finished inhaling the food now.
“So, is there a way you can help me to get home?” I asked her, setting the tray aside. To my dismay, she shook her head and said, “No. But I might be able to help a little. Despite your memories being intact chronologically, there are actually large chunks that are… missing.” I blinked, “Missing? Like amnesia?” Shelke stood up and walked over to her computer. I stayed seated since I couldn't follow yet, and she answered, “No. Amnesia I can work around with my software. This is more like what I said. There are chunks of memory that should be there to make up for certain gaps between your age from one memory to another. But they aren't there. Such a thing is impossible, and I spent nearly two hours trying to find a way around it. The only things I have to show for it are two pictures.”
I stood up slowly, and feeling quite a bit better after having eaten, I shuffled to the computer screen to look. On one screen is a picture that is solid white. The other is a map of Gaia, with a little red X over the capital of Wutai. I looked back at the solid white picture and asked, “Is that supposed to be something?” Shelke nodded and held up a print out of the same picture. It was still just white. She handed me another picture, and it seemed to be the same picture only darker, but the difference is stunning, considering the white dragon symbol in the center of the picture certainly hadn't been there before.
I examined the dragon closely. Despite only being an etched symbol, it's pretty detailed. Like how you can tell that it has a fairly long neck and tail, and has four wings that seemed to make the shape of a butterfly almost. I had no idea what to make of it. I shrugged at her and said, “I don't know what this means at all… Thank you anyway. I appreciate it.” She answered back, “Your welcome.” I nodded and asked, “So what now?” Shelke shrugged and said, “That's your call. I told Vincent you might be a while since you need rest, or you can go with him and rest elsewhere.” I nodded and promptly laid down and said, “I guess whatever this dragon thing is will tell me something on how to get home. Either way… I guess I need to get to Wutai at some point…”
I yawned, feeling exhausted from my attempts to get up and move around. Shelke got up and left as I slowly slipped into slumber. My last thought of the day happened to be, I wonder what Wutai'll be like... and with that, I fell asleep.
