Answered Prayers

(Certain characters copyright H. Kanzaka / S. Yoshinaka, and whoever
created Outlaw Star. Original characters, if any, belong to me. No
copyright infringement intended. Remember: suing people is a bad
thing.) ^_^
This a spamfic, and not to be taken seriously. I have no plans to
continue it, but with enough encouragement, maybe.
----------
As Gene Starwind deftly piloted his grappler ship, the Outlaw Star, he
sighed. Sure this ship was the fastest and most advanced in the
galaxy, but the computer was so... annoying.
Gilliam was efficient and cordial enough, but his attitude stunk.
"Oh," thought Gene. "I wish I could find a replacement."
Suddenly, the sensors detected something coming out of etherspace.
Instantly, Gene's senses leapt to the ready. He was confident that he
would be ready for anything.
He wasn't.
A bright purple flash erupted in front of him. Out of the flash,
something small, thin, black and square dropped into his lap. It
looked vaguely familiar, but he couldn't place it. Then he remembered,
it was one of those ancient data storage devices that people used to
use on Earth a few hundred years ago. He'd seen some in a museum once
and he distinctly remembered laughing at the seemingly insignificant
amount of information it could hold.
The first question to come to mind was, 'How the hell did one of these
get here and for that matter, why?'
When no answers revealed themselves, he popped the ancient piece of
equipment into an experimental all-purpose data reader (handy, dontcha
think?). As the ADR tried to access the disk, the lights began to
flicker in the cabin. A large glowing mass of light began to coalesce
in the middle of the cabin and a human-sized shape began to become
visible.
It was at this point that the Gilliam, know-it-all computer, made his
presence known.
"Gene. What have you brought in my pristine cabin, now?" The
irritation was easily heard in the simulated voice of the ship's
computer.
Gene could do nothing but gawk as the glowing form stopped glowing to
reveal itself as a young girl with green hair and a nice body.
The girl had a cute smile on her charming face when she said,
"Greetings! I am the all-purpose starship O. S. Canal Volfeed.
Grappler Ship Edition!"
A large smile began to develop on Gene's face. As he looked at the
analysis display of the new piece of software, he gave a small
chuckle.
His prayers had been answered. His grin was downright sinister as he
finally replied to Gilliam's earlier question.
"Your replacement..."
The End
Author's Notes:
I really don't have anything against Gilliam, but being a long-time
Megumi fan, I would side with her roles first. For the newbies, Megumi
Hayashibara, the Queen of all Japanese Seiyuu[Voice Actor](IMO),
provides the unique voice for Canal Volfeed in the sister series of
Slayers, Lost Universe.
One last thing. You may or may not be wondering why the flash, that
Canal's floppy disk appeared in, was purple. If you know me, or even
care to hazard a guess from my 'net nick, you'll probably realize whom
it was that answered Gene's request. I'd tell you, but that is a
secret. ^_^
Comments and criticism of kind intent are welcome, comments and
criticism from unthinking idiots are not!
