Chapter 3:
The Steps

It was quite bright outside, thanks to all the stars. From a short distance away, Keitaro could see Naru sitting on the steps and looking up at the stars. He silently wished that this night would go according to plan. He moved right next to her and sat on the steps. He handed her her hot cocoa, but as he did so, he felt his heart skip a beat. Through the moon and starlight, he could clearly see Naru's features. Her eyes were shining like diamonds and her skin looked so soft and smooth. He knew that Naru was always radiant, but tonight, she looked even more beautiful than she normally would.

“What are you staring at?” Naru asked as she accepted the hot cocoa that Keitaro handed to her. She the looked down in order to hide the blush that was beginning to form on her cheeks. “This is really flattering. Oh Keitaro.” Naru thought

“Oh… Uhm… Nothing. Hehe. It's just that, you look really beautiful tonight Narusegawa.” Keitaro said with a blush. “I can't believe I just said that!”

If Naru had actually been facing right at Keitaro, he would see her blushing like crazy. His remark had totally caught her off guard, but she felt really happy inside. “This is going pretty well.” She thought. She then looked and flashed her best smile at Keitaro and said “Thanks Keitaro. I appreciate it.” Taking a sip from the warm mug, she returned her attention to the stars.

“So, how have you been? We haven't really really been able to talk lately. Especially since you've been really busy with your job.” Keitaro said. He was trying to strike up a conversation. After all, how could he live with himself if he let this opportunity slip away?

“I've been ok. Teaching in a University is really hard, especially since I'm a fresh graduate. Some of the students don't listen at all. Some are even jerks who only pay attention because of my looks. *sigh* But I can't just quit because of that. What would Mr. Seta think of me if I just quit because of such trivial matters?” Naru replied. “But more importantly, what would you think of me, Keitaro, if I just quit like that?” she added silently.

“Sounds like you aren't exactly enjoying your job” Keitaro said as he took a sip. He didn't really know what to say. Right now, he was just thinking of something to say that won't get him knocked away. He was enjoying this moment too much to get sent flying half-way across town.

“Well not really. It has its perks. I mean the pay is good enough that I can pay my rent here and have more than enough money for me to spend for myself.” Naru replied once again. “I can't keep waiting forever. I've got to make a move soon. This opportunity is just too god to pass up. She thought to herself.

“Say, Keitaro.” Naru said softly. “Do you remember that rumor that used to go around, that if you enter Todai together with the one that you love, you'll end up together forever?

“Of course I do.” Keitaro replied. “That promise I made with you all those years ago was the only reason I wanted to go to Todai. Why do you ask?”

“Oh nothing, I heard that that rumor is starting to get old.” Naru said, although that wasn't true. “We went to Todai together, yet how come we aren't a couple yet? I thought we were supposed to be happy together for the rest of our lives? I just wish that it is true, and not just any common rumor.” She thought to herself.

“Well, I believe in that rumor.” Keitaro said “I mean maybe no to everyone, but I'm sure it happens.”

Naru smiled. She knew Keitaro had an idea why she asked that question earlier. “Fine. If you believe, I believe too. How's that?” Naru said.

Keitaro nodded a yes and let a smile plaster itself on his face. “I really hope that we do end up together Narusegawa. I don't know how to tell you, but I really, really love you.” Keitaro said to himself.

Naru looked up at the stars then laid her mug beside her. She then rested her head on Keitaro's shoulder held on to his arm. “Do you mind? It's kind of cold here.” Naru said, along with a fake shiver.

Keitaro just smiled and let the girl of his dreams stay where she was. “This is going too well. Knowing my luck, something bad is going to happen soon.” Keitaro thought pessimistically. Incredibly, nothing else happened for the rest of the time they spent together there on the steps.

Noticing the time on her watch, she reluctantly let go of Keitaro's arm and stood up. “Thanks for the hot cocoa Keitaro. Well, goodnight.” She said as she flashed that oh-so-wonderful smile of hers and began to walk back inside the apartment.

“Hey, um… Narusegawa?” Keitaro asked meekly.

“Yes?” Naru turned around slowly

“Do you have any plans this Saturday?” Keitaro asked, trying to sound as casual as possible.

“Is he going to ask me on a date?” Naru thought, excited at the prospect of spending a whole day alone with Keitaro. “No. I don't. Why?” she replied almost immediately.

“Well, I was wondering. Since you don't really have any plans for this Saturday and since I don't have either, I was hoping that... well, you know, I could…*sigh* takeyououtonadate? Keitaro said hurriedly. He was already expecting a “no”. After all, he really had no luck with girls.

“Sure. Why not?” Naru answered with a smile.

“That's ok, no need to tell me why you can't… Wait, did you say yes?” Keitaro asked in disbelief. Naru, who could distinguish the shock in Keitaro's voice just nodded her reply and walked inside the apartment towards her room.

“I don't believe it! She, she said yes!” Keitaro screamed Keitaro triumphantly in his head.

Meanwhile, in the bushes, a young woman with skin as white as porcelain and hair as smooth as silk watched teary eyed at the things that just developed before her eyes. She turned away from the scene and proceeded to go to the back entrance of the apartment. As she did so, she dropped two tickets to the new amusement park she had acquired that afternoon. “Urashima, why can't you notice me?” she sighed to herself. Depressed, she retired to her room and fell asleep with a single tear rolled down her cheek.

Author notes: So how is it so far? It's kinda corny, I know. But I really couldn't think of anything right now. Just wait for Chapter 4 to come out. Comments and/or CONSTRUCTIVE criticism will be greatly appreciated. Thanks you! :-D
