Chapter one:
A tall teenage female walked through a quiet forest towards the only town in a ten mile radius that wasn't burning or already destroyed. A long and hooded black cloak covered her long cerulean hair, black tanktop, and, black jeans. A jet black wolf mask with crimson markings hid her midnight blue eyes. Her black shoes made no noise as she seemed to almost glide through the area. The pale moonlight reflected off the studs on her chocker. The eerie silence dominating the area sent chills up the girls spine. However, she quickly shook it off. `What am I, a baby!? I'm a knight for god sakes!' She subconsciously fingered the ranking earring that was dangling from her right ear. She glanced down at the flame like curse on her right arm, hidden by long sleeves. `An excess of brilliance can be such a disadvantage. I can't help but wonder what my brother's up to.' The blue haired knight sighed before refocusing on the task at hand.
The knight reached the town several minutes later and stood on a high rooftop, scouting out the perfect area to start destroying this town as well. Finally, she spotted the large clock tower in the very center of the town. Her grin grew mischievous as she fished her favorite ARM out of her pocket. She didn't usually keep her beloved Flame Bow charm in her lint-infested pocket, but she was in a hurry to escape the last town. The charm immediately began to glow as it lengthened to about four feet. She pulled back the string, causing a fiery black arrow to automatically appear. The projectile was released with a defining whistle and flew through the air. It collided with the very center of the clock. As it turned out, she couldn't have shot it at a better time. The second the shadowy flames caught, it was the midnight hour (right on the dot.) Instead of the usual `BONG!', it issued a `bounng!'
Following that, a few screams could be heard. The ocean haired teen fired more arrows and the clock tower soon became completely engulfed in flames. This town was considerably smaller than the last, so she saw no reason to do more. She turned to run as the clock tower issued a deafening `CRASH!'. She headed for the trees nearby as a group of voices reached her ears. “Not again!” “Those chess pieces are gonna get it one of these days!” “Hold your tongues, we have work to do!”. The hidden knight watched in disgust as a group of Cross Guards dashed by. `Foolish brother, you're on the losing side.' She eyed the youngest of the guards; an eighteen year old male with spiky navy hair and sapphire eyes. Ones eyes were notably drawn to the two upside down red triangles on his face and the curse marks on his arms. The knight shook her head as two other knights appeared behind her. They were both female and one was wearing an emerald dog mask while the other was wearing an indigo dragon one. They joined hands and wordlessly teleported away.
The three chess pieces reappeared on the solid ground just outside Phantoms floating castle. Still silent, they entered through the front gates and into the castle. A minute or two later, they were kneeling before Phantom. “Lord Phantom. The nine towns are now in ruins, just as you commanded.” The voice was that of the dragon masked knight. Phantom nodded. “Well done.” He turned his head slightly to look directly at the dragon and dog masked females. “You two are dismissed. YOU, however,” he looked right at the blue haired knight, his icy stare freezing her blood. “I need a word with you.” The three knights nodded and the turquoise and white haired females bowed before leaving. The momentary silence, however short, caused the girl to shiver slightly. “I have a assignment which you alone can handle. I need you to annihilate those pesky Cross Guard members. They've been a thorn in my side for far too long. The girl nodded obediently. “Yes sir. I'll leave right away.” To her surprise, Phantom chuckled slightly. “You don't have to leave just yet. You only just returned from your last mission.” The knight looked bewildered. “Really? But shouldn't…” He held up a hand to silence her. “Just rest a bit and you can leave tonight. Possibly tomarrow morning if you need it.” She blinked again behind her mask. “Thank you, sir. Anything else?” He shook his head. “No, that is all.” The knight bowed respectfully and promptly exited. Once the heavy doors boomed close behind her, she exhaled a storage of breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. `Wow, Phantom seems to be getting nicer lately. But that mission…why only me?' She sighed, easier this time, and continued down the long hall she'd found herself in; all the while finally removing her mask.
Before she could begin thinking to herself again, she found herself stopped in place; two hands clapped over her eyes. Instead of yelling or freaking out, she immediately realized who it was. “Guess who?” A deep yet playful voice sounded. A wide smile spread across her face as she lifted the hands gently off. “Ian, by now you should know you can't sneak up on me.” “I just did now, didn't I?” Ian countered. She giggled slightly as he kissed her quickly on the lips. “So, where ya headed?” He decided to change the subject for some reason. She shrugged. “I guess nowhere really. I'm supposed to just chill before my next mission.” Ian couldn't help but frown. “Another mission? Didn't you just come back from one?” She nodded. “Yeah, but this one's more important.” He frowned deeper, but decided not to question her further.
Eventually, the hall opened up to a small dining room. It wasn't very crowded, but the three chess pieces that were sitting towards the back were loud enough for AT LEAST as loud as a dozen people. “Baki! That was my piece!” “The hand is quicker than the eye.” “Stop trying to be smart!” The green haired Rook known as Baki winced as his turquoise haired sister aimed a slap to the back of his head. The other sister pushed her white hair out of her face as she proceeded to laugh. “Come on Kati, there's more. Besides, it's not really our lunch break anyways.”
The two Knights standing near the entrance found themselves laughing as well. “Hey Sasori, can't you control your siblings?” The oldest of the siblings shook her head sadly. “No, these two are impossible. Especially when it comes to food.” “HEY! I'm not some fatty who's desperate over food!” Katemara declared; her hands on her hips. Baki seized this as his chance to grab more brownie-looking things. How he wasn't overweight, nobody knew. Sasori shrugged and walked over to the others. “So, Whatcha up to, Xanos?” Xanos shrugged. “Not much. And you?” “ Other than watching Baki gorge himself over there?” She laughed slightly before growing serious.
“Come on, you KNOW you want to tell me what super secret chocolate coated mission you have to do for Phantom.” Her tone was quite contrary to her face. Xanos frowned. “It's kinda a secret and I really don't want to get in trouble.” “Aww, come on. I'll bet you told your LOVER over there all about it!” Now she was becoming slightly demanding. Predictably, Xanos blushed, but it was actually Ian that did the talking. “Actually, I know no more than you. But if it's secret, it's secret I guess.” He had trouble hiding the slight frustration he felt. Sasori knew she wasn't going to get anything out of Xanos so she sighed in defeat before deciding to talk about something else.
Chapter two:
(Later that night…)
Xanos, who'd been pretending to sleep in her darkened room, sat up. The whole time she couldn't help but once more wonder why Phantom would send only her on this mission when he KNEW she could easily wind up fighting the entire group of Cross Guards. She grabbed her wolf mask and checked to make sure she had all her favorite ARM on her. Satisfied, she slipped out into the dark and dreary hallways and headed for the back entrance of the castle. She was surprised that no one else was awake, but then again, it WAS 3:45 in the morning. She made it out seemingly undetected and teleported away. But little did she know, there were three other masked pieces watching. They too disappeared, after her.
Xanos reappeared in a small forest clearing. She smirked, knowing exactly where she was. She crept further into the trees as the three stalking pieces kept close, but not too close. They suddenly realized where the ocean haired Knight was going. “Is this her next mission?” The dog-masked one asked her also masked sister. “No clue.” The third one was actually not their brother, but a concerned Ian. “I can't believe she was sent alone! What was Phantom thinking!?” The sisters shrugged. “Well, let's find out.”
Xanos continued walking until she sensed something odd. `No way! I can't believe they followed me here.' She shook her head and withheld a sigh. `No one can seem to let me be, can they?' She chose to ignore them and continued walking until muffled footsteps nearby stopped her. `Brother…' Her eyes narrowed as she leapt into the branches of the tree beside her. Just as she predicted, out stepped the blue haired Cross Guard member from before. He had a distraught look upon his features and was probably taking a midnight stroll to calm down. In fact, he seemed so upset about something that he hardly noticed the sharp and thin tree branch that was thrown into the ground before him.
His eyes widened as the assailant revealed her self. “It's foolish to walk alone in a place like this.” She threatened. The male began to scowl. “Why can't you Chess Pieces just go and die!?” He was clearly NOT in the mood for this. Xanos couldn't help but chuckle at his childish tone. “Not before you do!” Almost at the exact moment she whipped out a fiery whip-like ARM, the guard had drawn his trademark pole-like steel ARM. From the nearby bushes, the still following Knights watched in confusion. “She's already gotten herself in a fight!?” Katemara whispered in utter shock. Sasori, who'd been eyeing the male oddly, shook her head. “No, I think that's her brother.” “What makes you say that?” “Look at them. There aren't a lot of people that are born with blue hair.” Ian nodded. “Yes, but why this all of a sudden?” The sisters shrugged; who could say?
The two siblings were sparing viciously, neither backing down. Xanos matched her brothers blows, not even bothering to shoot for vital points. It took several minutes before her brother came to a horrid conclusion. `This knight fights exactly like…' “Xanos?” He asked, jumping back in defense. Xanos frowned beneath her mask. “You are mistaken. So shut up and keep fighting.” For some reason, she didn't want her brother to know the truth. “Why? Do I amuse you?” She shrugged. “Possibly.” Her whip snaked forward suddenly, just barely catching his leg. He gritted his teeth and went on the offense again. But his attacks just weren't as strong as before since he was convinced that this piece was familiar.
Several minutes later, other voices could be heard from whence the guard had come. “Alviss? Where are you?” Alviss glanced backwards quickly, regretting it soon after. Xanos laid a painful blow across his back with her whip. “Foolish mistake. I guess I'll just have to finish you later though…” Her tone was still more mocking then anything else as she faded away into the shadows. Alviss couldn't seem to move as he watched the mysterious attacker leave. “Alviss! Oh thank god!” He winced slightly as his not-so-favorite blond companion gave him a bear hug and a girl with short purpleish-blue hair looked worried. “Oh, you're hurt!” She quickly examined the wound already quite visible on his back. He shrugged it off. “Oh, it's nothing. Let's just head back and you can look at it if you want.” Both of his new companions nodded before leading him away.
All the while, the three knights hiding were still utterly mystified. “Where's she going?” “Let's just go after her and ask.” “Well, maybe just one of us should go after her. We don't want her to think we're hunting her down.” Ian suggested. Both sisters shot him an accusing stare. “You just want to be alone with her, don't you?” “You're such a perv.” He grew red almost immediately; gracious for the fact he was still wearing his mask. “Come on. Don't try and pin THAT on me. I'm gonna go ask her, and you two can come if you like.” His tone was final and, before either sibling could protest further, he was gone. Sasori turned to her sister, already shaking her head. “Should we?” Surprisingly, Katemaras features brightened instantly. “Nope. They'll probably want to be alone for a while. Besides, I know there's this REALLY hot guard that hangs with that Alviss guy. Let's go spy on him.” Sasori looked confused. “What about Phantom, you playa!?” Katemara frowned. “Nag, nag, nag. Let's go!” She grabbed her sister by the hand and they were off.
Chapter three:
(Already deep in the forest…)
Xanos walked through the oddly quiet forest, the only sound was her own footfalls. After a few more seconds she stopped in her tracks and sighed in annoyance, an unforgettable magical presence nearby. “ For god sake, Ian! I know you've been following me the whole time, so quit hiding in the shadows!” Ian did as she said and emerged from the shadows directly behind her. He removed his mask, revealing the worry on his features. Xanos turned her head to look him in the face as he stepped up behind her. “Aww, come on. You know how worried I get when you constantly run off on your own.” Xanos now had a look of irritation on her face. “What do you mean CONSTANTLY!? This is the first time!” Actually, Xanos had a habit of running off on her own to clear her head but didn't want anyone, including Ian, to know something was seriously bothering her. Ian knew better but didn't retort. Instead, he wrapped his arms around her waist and laid his head on her shoulder. “Don't be like that.” His voice was soft and had a hint of a plead in it that caused Xanos to blush a deep red. She sighed softly, any annoyance she had felt drained the second he wrapped his arms around her. “You're impossible for me to stay mad at you. You know that, right?” Ian smiled softly, not as widely as usual .“I know.”
They resumed walking through at a relaxed pace until they came to a gently flowing stream. They stood in silence for a while as Ian thought about how to phrase his next question, so as not to get Xanos unnecessarily upset. Finally, he decided the straight forward way would be best. “That guy you were fighting, he's your brother, right?” Xanos frowned slightly before looking at his now serious face and looking away slightly. “Yeah, but I haven't spoken to him in about nine years.” There was a poorly hidden depression in her voice which Ian immediately picked up on. He once more wrapped his arms around her waist, now holding her closer and slightly tighter than before. “ Phantom told you to kill him, didn't he?” Xanos nodded. “Sorta. He ordered me to kill every Cross Guard member, but…” She couldn't bring herself to finish her sentence. “You couldn't do it, even if you had the chance, could you?” Xanos shook her head sadly. “No, blood is just to thick.” She looked away, frowning slightly. “But it's just so hard to deal with Phantom and his stupid mark. I hate it!” She sighed heavily as Ian pulled her closer yet again. “I'm sorry. I'm ranting again…” Ian shook his head. “No. You have every right to be angry. Phantom had no right to mark you like that.” The distain in his voice was as clear as the full moon high above their heads. A small smile slid on Xanoss' face. “Aww, you're so sweet.” Ian couldn't help but smile slightly. “Only for you.” They stood face to face, looking deep into the others very soul. Ian wrapped an arm around as his other hand found its way to the back of her head. He then leaned in and kissed her, soft and sweet. Xanos wrapped her arms around his back as her eyes slid closed and she kissed him back. They both wished that the moment would never, ever end.
Chapter four:
Alviss winced as the girl from before began to heal his back. “Could it BE anymore painful, Snow?” He couldn't help but ask. The girl frowned. “I'm sorry Alviss, but you really should be more careful. Alviss frowned, but said nothing. “What happened anyways?” Snow finally asked. The blonde from before frowned as well. “Yeah, how the heck could you get burnt in a freakin' forest anyways!?” Alviss sighed heavily, right now the answer was more painful then the burn. “I'd rather not talk about it.” The ugly, black haired boy nearby smirked slightly. “I'll bet he did it himself, just for attention.” Alviss lost his usual calm demeanor and punched the douche'. “Shut the hell up!” Everyone present was surprised by this sudden outburst.
Alviss rose to his feet several minutes later, the burn on his back now fully healed. He muttered a quick thanks to Snow and went out onto the porch of the little house they were staying in. He sat down on one of the lounge chairs. However, he was unable to relax due to the disturbing events that had recently occurred, particularly his confrontation with the wolf masked knight. `That WAS Xanos, it HAD to be! What's she doing working for Phantom though? If I only knew…' He sighed , it was heavily laced with depression. `I wonder if she really would've killed me if the others hadn't came after me.' The lonely older brother sadly pulled a few old photographs from his pockets. The first was of a five year old Alviss ruffling the hair of his little sister, who looked almost like his twin except that she had a slightly lighter hair color. After a few seconds he flipped to the next one. In this completely candid picture, Alviss was seven and Xanos was six. The two siblings were sitting on a large, black leather sofa and Xanos had fallen asleep against her brothers shoulder. Looking back at all the old memories was almost TO painful, yet something made Alviss feel he had to.
“Hello? Earth to Alviss,” Ginta began, his hand waving in the depressed boys face. Alviss looked up at the obnoxious blond, his frown returning. “What's wrong with…” “Look, there's something wrong with YOU and if you want to feel better, than you gotta talk about it.” Ginta countered, before Alviss could finish his sentence. “It's about your burn, isn't it?” Dorothy inquired. Alviss sighed, beginning to stow the pictures away. “Sort of. It's just…” “Can WE see those pictures?” Nanashi asked, his curiosity aroused. Alviss looked unwilling, but reluctantly handed them over. “Those are pictures of me and my sister, Xanos.” “What do they have to do with your burn?” Snow asked as she eyed the old pictures. Nanashi suddenly narrowed his eyes in understanding. “She did it, didn't she?” Alviss nodded stiffly, looking away from the others. “I don't understand it, myself. But, it really hurts.”
The others, even Ginta, grew silent as Alviss wiped away a stray tear. “I didn't want to have to leave her. It was only supposed to be a two day mission, nobody said it would take a week. She promised she'd be there when I came home, but she was gone.” His voice began to crack, so he had to pause a second to regain his composure. “We were orphaned since before I can remember and we were all we had in this world. When I joined the guard, I knew I'd have to leave her at times, but that was so we'd be able to survive. I came back and assumed she was dead, killed by Phantom or something. But now I know she became a traitor. But I still don't know why.”
All the while they discussed the matter, two knights watched from the shadows of the nearby woods. “See, I TOLD you he was hot.” Katemara gloated. Sasori promptly slapped her sister upside the head. “Didn't you even hear what they're saying!?” It took all she had not to yell. Katemara gingerly rubbed where she'd been hit. “Of course I heard. I'm NOT Baki ya know.” Sasori laughed slightly. She, as well as all the other chess pieces, knew Baki has a serious case of selective hearing. (That was another reason he was never promoted.)After a second or so, the white haired sister turned her eyes back to the scene before them. “You don't think Xanos would have killed him, do you?” Katemara shook her head and watched as well. “No. I honestly think she can't bring herself to slay the only family she has left.” “I wonder how upset she really is.” Sasori commented, truly worried. Katemara smiled beneath her mask. “Oh, I'm sure she's alright. Remember, lover boy went to talk to her. In fact, those two are probably making out as we speak.” She had no idea how true that was. Sasori smiled slightly. “Probably.” Her face became serious as her gaze drifted back to the porch. “Do you think she's going to betray Phantom?” Katemara shrugged. “Who can say? I guess it's just a matter of who she's more loyal to, her brother or Phantom.” The two sisters remained silent, both wondering what happened to their blue haired friend nine years ago and what'll happen now. They quickly ducked out of sight as the pink haired witch turned her gaze to the trees, sensing a foreign magical presence. As quickly as they came, the two knights sped off unnoticed.
The four knights met back up several minutes later. Ian had an arm around Xanoss' shoulder and left it there. Sasori and Katemara removed their masks and smiled slightly. “Hey guys.” “What's up.” Xanos and Ian shrugged. “Right now, nothin' much” Sasori turned her gaze to the orange sun slowly peaking above the trees. “Well, we'd better be getting back to the castle.” Ian and Katemara nodded in agreement. Xanos, however, frowned slightly. “Actually, I still have A LOT of work down here to take care of. You guys go on ahead.” There was a hint of deception in her tone. The three others could already tell what she was thinking, but nodded anyways. “Alright.” “We'll come by to check on you later.” Ian wrapped his arms around his beloved before giving her a quick kiss on the cheek. “Be careful, okay?” Xanos nodded. “Alright.” Ian, Sasori, and, Katemara then teleported back to the castle.
Chapter five:
Xanos sat hidden in the thick branches of an old oak tree, watching the sun slowly fall behind the mountains. Thankfully, she wasn't discovered by her brother or his friends. Her mind was racing with memories of the past. `Do I honestly dare betray Phantom? Hmmm, maybe I should at least TRY to explain things to Alviss. I mean, he IS my brother and he's cursed as well.' Her fingers glided over the curse once more. This time, however, she wasn't wearing her cloak so her fingers glided over bare skin. She'd seen her brother from a distance several times that day and a feeling of guilt constantly came over her when she saw the miserable look on his face. She ran her fingers through her hair, once more flipping it over her right eye. `This is all Phantoms fault! If he'd never came after me, none of this would've happened!' She removed her mask and her midnight blue eyes scanned the area once more. `Where are they, they promised they'd come tonight. I hope nothing happened to them.'
As if on cue, Ian, and the sisters came stepped out of the shadows of the trees. They were closely followed by a Canary masked Baki. Xanos issued a questioning stare that Ian answered almost automatically. “He insisted on coming because he was bored and wouldn't leave us alone.” He then wrapped his arms around Xanos. “I was so worried.” Xanos smiled sweetly as she wrapped her arms around him as well. “I said I'd be careful, didn't I?” Ian smiled wider. “Yeah, but you know how I am.” Baki rolled his eyes. “Gag.” Xanos and Ian turned to face him. Baki then let out a sudden “YIPE!!!” and leapt behind his sisters as Xanos issued that oh-so-feared glare. Everyone present knew that the last person that got that glare was Repunzle and well, let's just say there's one less chess piece in the world. The ONLY reason that Xanos usually just smacked Baki instead of killing him was his goofy personality. All the while, Ian eyed the mark on his beloveds arm with only a millionth of the distain he felt showing. He finally looked away after a few seconds, hiding the extremely sickening feeling he had inside. `So, that's the mark. It's spread pretty far too. It's a wonder she still has ANY control over her actions.'
Before anything else could be said, the pieces heard a distant rustle. All eyes turned to Xanos, who nodded. “I'm ready to handle this, guys. You can all just hide for the time being.” Though the others looked reluctant to leave her, especially Ian, they nodded and dashed off to hide nearby. Xanos turned towards the unseen walker. She didn't even bother putting her mask or cloak back on or even moving for that matter; Alviss's magical presence was unmistakable. And sure enough, out stepped a lone Alviss. “Out for a lonely stroll again, brother?” Xanos remarked, her eyes alight with slight amusement. Alviss stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes growing wide. “I knew it was you!” He was yelling, but more from excitement than anything else. He rushed forward for a LONG overdue hug. Xanos was surprised, not a single question or accusation off the bat. Just a warm, brotherly hug. “ I'm sorry, brother. I really am.” He nodded, hugging his long lost little sister tighter. Then, when he released her, he motioned for her to follow him back the way he'd came. She looked slightly unsure, but he added, “We need a safe place to talk. It's been so long.” She nodded and proceeded to follow. All the while, the three Chess Pieces still hidden in the forest followed as well. They made sure to not be detected though.
They reached the same little house as last night and quickly ducked inside. The lights were already on, but no one was there. Alviss wasn't surprised; they said they'd be out patrolling. This gave them the two of them the perfect opportunity to talk without interruption. Xanos took the initiative and sat down upon a nearby armchair. “Alright, where to start…?” Alviss was seated as well. “Start with that day I left for that really long mission.” Though he was saddened by the thought of it, he was also excited to FINALLY be hearing what happened. Xanos nodded gravely, she remembered that day well. “Well, I was really lonely once you'd left that day, so I went outside to play. I'd seen no harm in it. But a few days later, you still weren't back. I stopped playing and wandered around to find you. And as I went deeper into the forest, I heard footsteps and thought it was you. But…”
She unconsciously grabbed her right arm. “It was someone else, Phantom. I was such a fool and I shouldn't have listened to him. He said you had already joined him and if I wanted to see you, that I had to join too. So I followed him back to the castle, but I couldn't find you. When he finally revealed to me that he was lying, it was too late to try and run away. I was surrounded by all these freaky-looking Chess Pieces, most of which I've already killed by now, and the exits were blocked. And as if that wasn't bad enough…” She paused momentarily, her nails practically puncturing her cursed arm. Alviss had to bite his lip to keep from interrupting, even if she wasn't speaking.
“He knew I'd try something, so he cursed me. And with this, he'll always have some degree of control over me. If I was ordered to kill, I'd kill. If I had to burn down a town, I'd do it. No questions asked. But when I was ordered to kill you… I just couldn't do it.” Alviss nodded somberly, hugging her again. “It's alright. I know you'd never betray me of your own free will.” Xanos could feel her tears coming for the first time in nine years, but she really didn't want to let them show. She couldn't even look at him. “I'm so sorry brother. If I'd never gone looking for you, none of this would've happened.” Alviss shook his head furiously. “No, this is all Phantoms fault. He needs to be stopped once and for all, and you can help us. You know vital information against him, right?” She nodded, but still looked confused. “But if he finds out, won't he send more pieces after you?” Alviss's features grew sterner still. “I'm not afraid. Besides, I have plenty of other reasons for revenge.” He unconsciously traced the curse marks on both his arms. Xanos nodded. “Alright. We'll do this together.” `And maybe I can even get the others to help.'
From outside, the hidden chess allies peeked through the windows. They heard every word and were trying to make a decision. “Things are getting pretty weird nowadays.” Baki remarked. The others nodded. “But she DOES have a point. I think we should help them.” Ian suggested. “You mean, switch sides?” Sasori asked. He nodded. “You'd rather help us than Phantom, right?” All three siblings nodded. “Of course, of course.” “Well than, that's settled. Let's go and let them know.”
They left the shadows and headed for the front door. However, they couldn't have had worse timing. Just as they stepped out into the open, out stepped Ginta, Snow, Nanashi, Babbo, and, Jack. All eyes were glued to the four still masked Chess Pieces. “Uh oh, we forgot to take off our masks…” Sasori remarked. “You again, eh!?” Ginta remarked, pointing an accusing finger at Ian. Ian waved his hands defensively. “Please, we mean you no harm.” “All Chess Pieces mean harm!” Nanashi yelled as Alan finally caught up with the others. “We want to help, not fight.” Sasori pleaded as Alviss and Xanos stepped out of the house. “Listen to them, they're with me.” Xanos explained.
All eyes turned on her. “But we thought you worked for Phantom!” Jack accused. Xanos sighed slightly. “I won't deny that I USE to work for that scum ball, but I've changed my ways. And my friends and I are going to help you all take Phantom down, for good.” Her voice was defiant. Dorothy, who'd now joined them as well, didn't seem remotely convinced. “Come on, a bunch of Chess pieces can't just show up, say they've changed, and expect us to believe them.” The pieces sighed and removed their masks. “We heard everything Xanos told Alviss and we would NEVER abandon a friend, no matter what. So even if you all don't trust us, we're sticking to our word regardless.” Katemara declared.
Alviss nodded. “I think we should give them a chance. I know my sister would've never joined with Phantom in the first place.” His comrades gave him a disbelieving look. “What makes you say that?” Alan inquired, very seriously. Xanos held up her afflicted arm, the curse showing as clear as day. “I was cursed and forced to do Phantoms bidding, but he now has no control over me. I sincerely hope that, if you can trust my brother, you can trust me as well.” The others grew silent. Finally, Alan spoke again. “Your sister may stay, but I don't trust the others. Especially that one.” He gazed hatefully at Ian. (Poor Ian can't seem to get a break, can he?) Ian nodded, he knew it would come to this. Xanos looked dismayed, despite that Ian was willing to accept this. “But, why…” “It's alright, I understand.” He stepped forward, embracing Xanos quickly. “They have every right to hate me for what I've done. So, don't worry. We'll be nearby and help until we're trusted.” Xanos nodded, hugging him back. A couple minutes later, the former pieces, save for Xanos, were gone.
Alan nodded to the others. “It's getting late. We should all head in.” The rebels obliged and headed inside. The last two to enter were Alviss and Xanos. The blue haired ex-knight gave a final longing look into the darkness. “Coming?” Alviss asked softly. Xanos nodded and followed him inside. Before she knew it, Xanos already had a little space set aside for her equipped with a blanket and a pillow. She smiled sweetly as Alviss bid her goodnight. As Alviss settled down in his own spot, not far from his sister, he couldn't help but wonder all the other things she hadn't told him. Especially about Ian… `Oh well, there's always tomorrow.', he thought as he began to drift off to an easier sleep.
Chapter six:
(Outside, slightly deep in the forest…)
Ian, Sasori, Katemara, and, Baki had found an abnormally large tree to sleep in. It wasn't the most comfortable, but it was doable. Ian had placed himself higher up than the others to be somewhat alone with his thoughts. `All in good time. They can't distrust us forever.' He sighed gently and opened his stunning green eyes a bit wider to take in the moonlight. `At least then, we wouldn't have to be apart…' His eyes drifted off towards the darkening house. `Soon…'As Katemara and Baki continued to make remarks about how crazy things could get, Sasori decided to explore a bit.
Sasori ventured a bit further into the inky forest. She knew she shouldn't be walking at this time of night, but her siblings had been bickering violently for some reason, and Ian had been staring dreamily off into space, that she had to get away for a bit. She glanced at the moon for a second, hoping she'd be able to find her way back. `Things can only go downhill from here. I'd better make tonight last.' She sighed, slowing her pace a bit. `I wonder what Rolan's up to.' Her features brightening. `Last time I saw him, he was trying to avoid getting picked on by Halloween and Peta.' She giggled, picking her pace back up.
But then, she heard a faint rustle to her left. Her eyes widened as a shadowy figure stepped out. The figure brushed its long hair aside, his pale violet eyes glinting. “Fancy finding you here, Sasori.” Sasori's smile returned as she hugged him. “Speak of the devil, I was just thinking about you.” He hugged her back and allowed his smile to soften. “What are you doing out here? You finished your mission this afternoon, right?” Sasori shrugged. “Not much, just hangin.” Rolan raised an eyebrow. “At eleven o clock at night?” “Well, it's not like I have a curfew or anything.” Her arms crossed in defiance.
He sighed, closing his eyes momentarily. “I was worried.,” he admitted. Sasori smirked slightly. “Aw, that's sweet of you. But, I'd be more worried about YOU.” He frowned. “What do you mean?” His tone was ridiculously innocent. She raised a hand, stroking his cheek. “Rolan, you can't keep pretending. I know you're suffering. And as your friend, I'm suffering too. You don't have to, you know, you can be free. I'm taking my freedom, along with the others.” Rolan shook his head, pulling away from her touch. “Look, I've told you before. The mark is a BLESSING. And I can't betray my savior, no matter what you say!”
She shook her head sadly, turning away. “Rolan, please. Can't you see Phantom's corrupted? No matter what our rank, we are all PAWNS to him. When you come to your senses, come find me.” She turned away quickly, steadily making her back the way she'd came. “I thought friends meant more…”She muttered, intending him to catch it. She stepped heavier, emphasizing her departure. Knowing Rolan, he'd stop her and try to work things out. But for once, she was wrong. Rolan's eyes grew narrow as he looked away. “Goodbye, Sasori. I'll remember you.” His tone was apathetic, quite unlike usual. Sasori was stunned almost to the point of stopping. But she knew she couldn't give in, so she kept walking. “Goodbye.. my love.” Rolan grew shocked as well, but forced himself to turn away. The two former friends drifted apart, the shadows swallowing them up and away from each other.
Chapter seven:
(The next morning..)
The sleeping freedom fighters were awoken very early by the sound of Alan's booming voice. “Alright guys, let's get up and move out. There are more towns in need nearby, so let's hustle.” He clapped his hands affirmatively before growing quiet again. Most of them obeyed speedily, but others were still a bit groggy. “Wake up Ginta.” Pleaded Snow as she shook his arm, to no avail. “Hey! Don't touch him! If anyone's gonna wake Ginta, it'll be ME!” Snow sighed as Ginta finally stirred. “Jeeze Dorothy, could ya be any louder?” “I'll show you louder!” She roared, waking Jack as well. “Wow, for once, I'M not the one getting yelled at…,” he muttered as he rubbed his eyes profusely. `Darn it! I wanted to be the one to wake Jack.' Xanos couldn't help but think as her face almost turned evil.
They were all ready to go minutes later and headed out. The others, in general, looked as normal as ever. But Dorothy and Xanos had taken the liberty of changing their outfits for a more inconspicuous look. After all, a witch and someone with a curse stood out in a crowd like a sore thumb. Xanos smiled as she kept her pace with Alviss. “It's so nice out today.” Her tone matched the dreamy look her eyes gave the rising sun. Alviss nodded. “Yeah, and I'll bet it feels good to not have to wear that ugly mask and earring anymore, right?” She nodded. “Yeah, but I still have them with me so nobody finds them later.” He nodded.
Before Alviss could continue the conversation, the four hidden allies from the night before showed themselves again. Only now, they were dressed as normal people. However, Ian still wore extreamly long sleeves to hide his Python Whip ARM. “Sup?” Sasori waved cheerily as she stood beside her sleepy siblings. Those two could've slept till nine o clock at night if given the chance, especially Baki. Ian, though he was slightly nervous about all the stares, stepped towards Xanos for a hug. “Did you sleep well?” He asked. Xanos nodded. “Yeah, these guys were really cool and even had a little spot set aside for me. But I was lonely without you.” She kept her voice low at the last part as Ian kissed her forehead quickly. “And I you.” They ignored the disgusted looks from the others, particularly Alviss, and continued walking.
“I don't trust these Chess Pieces as far as I can throw them.” Nanashi muttered to Dorothy, who nodded. “I know, I don't even like walking with them…” “It's very rude to gossip, ya know.” Xanos stated. “Weren't you taught better?” Sasori added. The others couldn't help but chuckle. Nanashi crossed his arms, completely unfazed. `Grudges die hard…' The rest of the trek was doused in awkward silence.
They all breathed in relief when they finally reached the town. “No ambushes, that's a good sign.” Alviss stated, mostly to Xanos. Alan led the way to the small hospital near the center . It was obvious that the town had recently been attacked and that the clean-up process was moving along at a sluggish pace. They were surprised that the hospital they were now entering was even still standing. `Strange, Phantom's usually thorough when he wants something destroyed…' Xanos couldn't help but think as they walked up to a gloomy pair behind a counter. But the duo seemed to brighten up a bit when they spotted Alan. “Good, more help.” The male of the two spoke up first. His tone was just as haggard as his appearance, though. Beside him, a female that could have been his sister, nodded semi-cheerily. “ Thank goodness. I had a feeling we'd be seeing good ole Alan sooner or later.” She rose to her feet and led them over to a large bulletin board that was barely visible behind all the papers pinned to it.
She pointed to three separate papers, her features growing gloomy once again. “Okay. We'll need a few of you to help the team that's out there clearing the large debris. A few can assist the construction crew rebuilding the grocery store. And the rest of you can help us by being nurses for the day.” The girl nodded to the gloomy male who had already been writing something. Alan smirked slightly. “Alright, I'll help with the construction. Which of you all is good at building?” Before any of the others had time to think about it, Alan selected Nanashi, Baki, and, Katemara to join him. “Let's see what you kids can do. Alright, let's move out!” Those chosen hurried to catch up to the large man as he exited the hospital. Xanos, Ian, and, Sasori couldn't help but think that the clumsy green-haired teen was BOUND to mess something up.
The others looked at one another in silence before making the next decision. “Well, I suppose I'll help with the debris. With Babbo, it'll be a snap.” Ginta remarked. “Insolent fool! I am NOT some mindless club for breaking rocks with!” Babbo retorted. Jack, Dorothy, and, Sasori volunteered to join them, and were soon gone as well. But, the black haired klutz tripped over his own big feet before making his exit. Those left followed the tired girl into another room. This one was smaller then the previous one and had rows of beds lined against the walls. A little less then half of those clean, white beds were occupied. The girl that led them here had already taken out to bandages, towels, ointment, and many other supplies they'd be using. “Alright, just check the notes on the clipboard beside each bed and do what you need to. I'll be attending the other room. Good luck.” She said as she headed for a door near the back of the room, exiting seconds later.
“They must be seriously under-staffed,” Alviss remarked. The others nodded before getting to work. Snow came to the aid of a burn victim towards the back, left hand corner of the room. Ian began assisting a man who'd lost his left arm. The siblings began to help two patients that were next to each other, so they could talk. “So, are you willing to do this kinda thing EVERYDAY?” Alviss inquired, checking the information for `his' patient. Xanos shrugged, checking the info for `her' patient as well. “Sure, why not? It's a lot better than causing this.” Her brother nodded solemnly. He then shot a glance towards Ian; grateful he could finally ask without being overheard.
“So, when DID you meet Ian?” Xanos flushed slightly, but she'd known this was coming. “Well, you know, missions and stuff…” She began. His eyes narrowed in annoyance. “Same rank, eh?” Xanos nodded. “Yeah, we've done a lot of missions together.” Alviss couldn't help but smirk. “Oh, I'm sure you have.” Xanos flushed again, but tried not to show her embarrassment at her brothers accusing tone. “Oh, stop it!” She punched his arm lightly. “But if anything, I'd say you're jealous.” She accused. This time, Alviss grew red. “Come on, you know there's no one out there for me.” “Aw, sure there is. You just haven't tried.” Xanos countered. He sighed. “Well, enough about me. Let's talk about YOU and Ian.” Xanos frowned slightly. “You make it sound like a bad thing.” Alviss shrugged. “Well, I just want to know WHY.” Xanos blushed a slightly deeper red and cast a glance at Ian, who was either not listening or pretending he didn't hear. “Well,” She began, thinking of how to answer. “Once I really got to know him, I realized we had a lot of things in common. I think he realized it too, but was to shy to tell. After a while, things just went from there.” There was a hint of embarrassment in her voice, but that was only from having to tell this to her brother. “Well, what made you fall in love with him?” Xanos sighed slightly, casting another quick glance at Ian. “Ian really cares about me and he's actually really sweet. Who can say why anyone falls in love anyways?” Alviss couldn't help but smile slightly. “Well, I guess the world may never know.” Xanos smiled slightly as she continued her work. `Heh, Alviss is still as over protective as ever. Well, it DOES come with being an older brother.' The siblings continued to talk as they worked.
Ian continued to pretend not to hear a word Xanos and Alviss said, his grin twitching slightly wider. `It wasn't that I was shy, I just thought she was too good for me. There are still moments when I feel that way.' He withheld a heavy sigh so the siblings wouldn't know he'd been listening in. `I had a feeling he'd be highly protective. Older siblings almost always are. Oh well, he'll come around eventually. It'll just take some time though.' He withheld another sigh and continued working as well. Snow also heard as well, but not on purpose. `Poor Alviss, he seems to truly believe he'll be alone forever. I'm sure he'll find someone someday, though.'
Chapter eight:
(Across town…)
Alan, Baki, Nanashi, and, Katemara arrived at the construction site a few minutes after they left. They couldn't help but grow discouraged at all the work left to be done. Alan immediately got to work, hoping to set a good example before anyone could start complaining. There were already nine people on the site, but still there were endless piles of wood waiting to be used. All the while they worked, Nanashi and Alan couldn't help but keep the two former Chess Pieces in their sites. `They better not try anything.' Alan thought threateningly. Nanashi grew uneasy when he'd been stationed beside Katemara. `Why is she looking at me like that?'
Katemara couldn't help but giggle. “Someone as good-looking as you deserves to be looked at, silly.” Nanashi grew red, but tried to keep his cool. “Get out of my head, you.” His tone betrayed his slight amusement. After all, HE was usually the one that did all the flirting. Baki was doing pretty well by his station with Alan, but after a while of all those repetitive movements, he lost his concentration. Instead of having to pass of a plank to some nameless person, Alan wanted it. Baki, being the goofball he really was, ended up accidentally dropping it on his comrades foot. Alan let out a ferocious growl, clutching his foot for dear life. Baki immediately grew fearful for his life as a fist blurred before his face, landing him a bump on the back of his head. “Watch what you're doing! Thanks to you, I'm gonna be limping all day!” “I'm gonna have this headache all day.” Baki murmured, rubbing his head. Katemara and Nanashi couldn't help but laugh. “Is your brother always that big of a klutz?” Nanashi asked. The embarrassed sister nodded. “Sadly.”
(Meanwhile, at the debris site…)
There was half the volunteers here then for the construction site. Dorothy, Jack, and Sasori sighed; this was gonna be a lot of work. Ginta, however, looked as cheery as ever. “Come on guys! Let's plow through this junk!” Babbo, who was ill at ease in Ginta's hand, couldn't help but retort. “You're only cherry because I'M the one who'll be doing the plowing!” Ginta's smile never faltered. “You betcha!” He didn't even try to deny it. In response, Babbo's metallic forehead collided with Ginta's. “No respect as always, you little runt!”
The others laughed, but soon grew annoyed as the two of them began to fight. “Come on you two, Stop! We have work to do!” Dorothy reprimanded. They stopped fighting and proceeded to help. Predictably, Ginta used poor Babbo to clear away the debris, but not without being pulled along at times. Jack used his Battle Shovel which, thanks to Dorothy, wasn't quite as pathetic as before. Dorothy summoned Toto and Sasori summoned Andromakey, her three headed Dragon. With all that going on, the job took less than ten minutes. “Alright guys, let's go find the others.” Ginta said. “But, we didn't decide where we would meet back up.” Jack complained. Sasori sighed. “They said the hospital, remember?” Jack shook his head. “No, I'm pretty sure they said something about a church.” “I thought you didn't know!” “Well, I did.” Sasori frowned and punched his head. “Shut up, lame brain!” Dorothy couldn't help but laugh a bit. “Come on guys, let's go.” She turned on her heel and began walking away, closely followed by Ginta and Babbo. Sasori and Jack continued glaring as they followed as well
Chapter nine:
Dorothy, Ginta, Sasori, and , a very sore Jack arrived at the hospital several minutes later. The first thing they noticed was that Snow, Ian, and, the blue haired siblings were already waiting for them. Sasori and the others walked over, closely followed by a bouncing Babbo. “So, how long have you guys been waiting?” Sasori asked, slightly surprised. Xanos shrugged. “Not long. Four minutes, tops.” Jack frowned. “But, you guys got the easier job. What took so long?” Ian and Xanos blushed slightly. “Uh, well…” Ian began, clearly embarrassed. “We're better at fighting than we are at doctoring wounds.” Xanos finished for him, equally embarrassed. Alviss quickly changed the subject to save his sister from any further embarrassment. “What happened to you?” He gestured at Jacks head, which now had a rather large bump on it. The idiot answered immediately. “She hit me, that's what!” Sasori shrugged. “Well, you deserved it, butt face.” Xanos suppressed a giggle. “Wow, usually I'M the one beating the crud outta people.”
Before Jack could retort, the door behind them swung open. Alan limped into the hospital, closely followed by Katemara, Nanashi, and, a nervous and bruised Baki. Katemara reached the group first, an evil smile on her features. “Guess what happened, guys.” Everyone except Sasori, Ian, and, Xanos looked clueless. Xanos smirked evilly. “Let me guess. Baki dropped a plank on Alan's foot and got hit in the back of the head, right?” Katemara felt her jaw drop. “Yeah, but how the heck did you know that!?” Xanos continued to smirk as the rest of the group rejoined them. “I know that goofball well enough by now. Besides, it's pretty obvious.” Poor Baki stood next to Xanos, who suddenly glared at him. “You KLUTZ!” She then slapped him upside the head, right on the already bruised area. Baki jumped away, clutching his head. “That's it! I'm never standing near YOU again!” He then turned to his older sister. “Why the hell is it that all your friends enjoy beating me up?” Sasori shrugged. “Hell if I know.” Xanos grinned evilly. “Because you're a wimp who doesn't fight back, that's why.” Baki glared at her, but said nothing as he realized that what she said actually had some truth to it, despite how mean it was. Ian shook his head in slight amusement. `Heh, it seems Baki FINALLY sees the truth in those words.' Alviss smiled slightly. `Typical Xanos. Still as belligerent as ever I see.' Snow was eying Xanos and Baki nervously. Sasori stood beside her and smiled slightly. “Don't worry, my brother isn't stupid enough to fight Xanos. Despite what everyone seems to think.” Sasori couldn't help but think, “Especially since she has Ian and her brother on her side.'
It was at that second that Baki muttered, “At least I'm not a blue-haired weirdo.” This automatically earned him a glare from BOTH siblings. He, however, was still FAR more scared of Xanos than her brother. Baki let out a shrill “YIPE!” and jumped behind Sasori, using her as a human shield. His frightened yellow eyes widened slightly. “You're gonna send that Guardian ARM after me, aren't you?” His voice was still high pitched as he shook with fear. Xanos, much to his relief, shook her head. “Nah, you're not worth the bother.” Baki breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness. That thing's as scary as you. I mean that in a good way.” He added the last part hastily as Xanos glared at him once again. However, Xanos sighed heavily. “Ya know what? I'm just gonna let that slide, this time ONLY.” This caught those who thought they knew her better slightly off guard, especially Ian. `Wow, I really thought she was gonna chase him down and beat the tar outta him. I wonder if she held back simply because her brother's watching.'
A sudden thought hit Dorothy like, well, a lot of things. “Hold on a second. Do ALL of you have a Guardian ARM?” The five former Chess Pieces nodded. “Yup. Each one with its own special abilities, key to strategized battle.” Sasori added. Jack and Ginta still looked blank. Xanos sighed heavily. “Let me explain. Each guardian has unique skills and special skills to aid it in battle. Take my guardian for example. Kirahara is a two headed wolf with feathered wings and razor sharp claws. She's able to run extreamly fast without making a sound, a skill that's extreamly useful for sneak attacks. She's also useful for tracking and aerial combat, or just for getting somewhere fast. I'm not so sure about the others though.” Ian smiled slightly. `Figures. She loves bragging about her Guardian.' Alviss looked slightly surprised. “You mean you STILL have that old thing.” Xanos nodded. “I bring it everywhere I go. You didn't honestly think I'd get rid of the ARM YOU gave me, did you?” Alviss shook his head. “Nah.”
Before anyone could comment further, Ginta and Jack's stomachs gave huge growls. The rest of the group turned to them, an annoyed looks on all their faces. However, Baki quickly became embarrassed as his stomach gave a massive growl as well. “What!? I haven't eaten since last night!” The rest of the group sighed, they too were feeling a bit hungry as well. “Well, we're done with community service for the day so, I suppose we could get some food.” Alan stated, taking charge as always. The others nodded and followed him towards the entrance. “Bye! Come back soon.” “Your help was greatly appreciated!” The not so gloomy duo called after them. Each group member issued a cherry wave as they stepped out into the still bright streets, following their poor limping leader. “So, who thinks they got the hardest job today?” Ginta asked innocently. Predictably, Jack spoke up. “I know WE did, no doubt about it. And plus, when your teammates are so rude…” “Hey! No one asked you, turd ball! Besides, clearing debris was a snap.” “Yeah, cause YOU had a guardian ARM to help you!” Jack retorted.
Baki shrugged. “Well, it's not our fault if you posses such weak ARM.” Xanos actually smiled at him and raised a hand for a high five. “Congrats, you FINALLY said something worth saying.” At first, Baki had winced because he thought he was going to be hit as usual. But, he reluctantly returned the high five anyways. The others couldn't help but laugh while Jack walked silently, seething.
Minutes later, Alan stopped in front of a small pizza place. “I've been here before, it's pretty good.” Alan remarked, turning back to the others. “I hope you're all up for pizza.” They shrugged, everyone was now too hungry to care. So, Alan limped through the jingling front door, immediately greeted with warm smiles. “Hey, Alan's back.” “Good to see ya.” Alan gave a cheery wave as the others stepped behind him. “Wow, that's quite a crew you've got there.” “Come to feed them all, eh?” Alan nodded. “Yup. The Cross Members keep signing up younger and younger.” He turned back to the group yet again. “So, what kinds of pizza do you all want?” “Pepperoni!” Ginta yelled. Babbo sighed. “So predictable…” Ginta frowned at him. “Someone's just jealous because they can't eat.” “I CAN SO!” Babbo retorted, bopping Ginta in the head yet again.
The others sighed as they tried to place their orders over the chaos of the fighting. Once they finally managed to place the orders, they went to sit down in a booth in the back. Ginta finally took the hint and followed them, dragging poor Babbo unceremoniously behind him. “No gentleman such as myself should have to endure this disgrace…” Babbo muttered while being dragged. Since there were so many of them, they had to take up two booths. Ginta found himself sitting between Dorothy and Snow on the left side of the first booth, looking clueless as always. Across from them sat Alan, Nanashi, and, Katemara. Katemara, much to the amusement of the others, had to restrain herself from glomping Nanashi.
In the booth conjoined to that one sat Jack, Baki, and, Sasori. They made sure that Baki was in the middle. And across from them sat Ian, Xanos, and Alviss. The older brother was now eyeing his sister oddly again. Xanos couldn't help but giggle. “Come on Brother, it's not like we're gonna feed each other or anything.” Xanos then couldn't help but think, “Oh man, I probably could've tried that it I didn't mention it. Oh well.' Ian was now just as red as Alviss was. Xanos couldn't help but laugh again.
Four medium pizzas arrived a few minutes later. A Supreme and a Mexican Pizza were placed on the first booths table, and on the seconds table was a Veggie Lovers and a Meat Lovers. Ginta frowned deeply. “HEY! I said Pepperoni!” Dorothy couldn't help but laugh. “Well, we figured this would be your punishment for making a scene.” Little did they know, Katemara had her own plan.
Ginta was still glaring, but stuffed his face with some Mexican pizza anyways. What he hasn't seen was that a certain SOMEONE had splashed WAY too much hot sauce on it. His face was bright red before he even swallowed. “AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!” He screamed, jumping up and dashing off in the first direction he could think of. Those still sitting, including Babbo, were laughing hysterically. “Oh right.” Katemara stated, holding up a hand to Nanashi for a high five. Nanashi happily obliged.
“Wow, usually I'M the one being pranked.” Baki stated, still laughing slightly. Xanos shook her head. “Typical Katemara, always pulling pranks on everyone except me.” A grin was across her face. The large group stopped laughing and continued eating. Ginta rejoined them minutes later, his face still EXTREAMLY red. He glared at everyone at his table except Snow. “Alright, which one of you did that?” Everyone at his table shrugged, they weren't talking. “Just shut up and eat.” Dorothy said. Ginta glared angrily but obliged.
