It had taken an order from Sumeragi Lee Noriega to get all four of them down on Earth, at the island that would be their planet-side base for the Gundams. Tieria hadn't been pleased at the order, claiming more he could be doing to help onboard Ptolemy, but she had pulled rank on him and insisted he take the time with the other Meisters. 'Get to know one another,' she'd suggested. 'You have to work effectively as a team.'
Tieria silently fumed, sitting underneath a tree for the shade it provided, watching as the others cavorted in the water nearby. Lockon and Allelujah had been eager to go swimming, and had even convinced Setsuna to get in the water. Tieria had come down to the beach because Allelujah had looked at him with that odd golden eye of his and threatened to carry him down and toss him in if he didn't agree. It was times like that, when Allelujah looked at him that way, that convinced him that the Level 7 files in Veda on the other Meisters weren't quite complete. Allelujah had been about to press Tieria to get in the water, but Lockon had stopped him for some reason. Tieria's eyes narrowed as he stared at the pilot of Gundam Dynames. The man had an uncanny ability to see through him. Tieria had thought he was only being paranoid all those times he'd been convinced someone was watching him. Just because he was paranoid, didn't mean he wasn't right. Though, if Lockon had been watching him, the reason eluded him.
He closed his eyes behind his glasses and leaned back against the tree, starting to feel the heat of the day more keenly as time went on. He'd been sitting down here, under this tree, watching the other Meisters for almost an entire fifteen minutes, and he'd had enough. He wanted to go back up to the house and lock himself in his room where he could sleep. He might not like having to be on Earth, he might fume at being ordered to rest, but he did have to admit - privately - that his body did need rest. He rose, sure that the others were caught up in their fun and started slowly back up the beach.
He heard the shifting of the sand behind him and Lockon calling his name but he didn't turn. He didn't want to stay; he wanted to be alone, away from these people who confused him. Lockon caught up to him, grabbing onto his arm to stop him and then Tieria turned, glaring at the taller man, letting his silence speak for him. Lockon winced, but didn't let go, as though he knew that the second he did, Tieria would just continue on his way.
"Tieria, don't be this way," Lockon spoke softly, stepping closer to Tieria so he could be heard over the crashing waves. "I saw your face when he threatened to toss you in. You don't have to swim if you don't know how."
Tieria looked up at Lockon, startled. If he had seen that flash of fear that Tieria had felt, then Tieria had made a mistake. He had let them get too close to him, he had let Lockon get too close. He tried to step back, pulling at his arm, feeling Lockon's hand tighten just enough to hold him, but not enough to hurt. He looked away, toward the house they stayed in, concealed in the jungle, and longed for the solitude of his room, longed to run back to space, to return to the Ptolemy and immerse himself in the emotionless logic of Veda's systems.
"Tieria, don't run. Stay with us, relax." Lockon was leaning closer to him. Tieria turned his head back and found Lockon close enough that if he shifted just an inch forward, lost his balance just a little bit, their lips would touch. His eyes widened and he felt the muscles in his arm bunch, ready to pull himself free and escape. A small click and a whirr caught his attention and he froze.
"Lockon! Tieria! Look over here!" Tieria looked to his left, back toward the water and continued to stand frozen to the spot as Allelujah pressed a button on what looked to be a camera and again he heard the click and whirr. A square bit of plastic was spit out of a slot in the front and he grabbed it, holding it in his hand with another and Tieria understood. He'd just had his picture taken, twice. He looked back to Lockon, who was still watching him with that slightly pleading look and still entirely too close to him.
He didn't think, he just reacted. He pulled his arm from Lockon's suddenly loosened grip and set off as fast as the terrain would allow him to. The air burned in his chest as he went, his body unaccustomed to the strain of exertion and adrenalin in gravity. He ran, heedless of the burn, unable to hear anything but the blood pounding his ears and his harsh breaths, until he reached the safety of his own room and closed and locked the door. He stumbled over to the bed and collapsed on top of the blanket, only then allowing the depth of his upset to show. He was weak, he was breaking, he wasn't fit to be a Gundam Meister, Veda would reject him and he'd been finished. His breath rapidly becoming more and more shallow, he lay there trying to gain control of himself.
Lockon watched him go, confused and somewhat distressed, himself. Something had upset Tieria; he just couldn't pinpoint what it had been. He was going back over it in his mind as Allelujah held up the photos to him.
"I didn't mean to scare him off. The pictures came out good, though."
Lockon looked down. In the first, they were close, eyes fixed on each other, close enough that it was hard to tell if they had just kissed, or were just about to. It was the second that caught at his heart. He had glanced at the camera but not really turned his head, but Tieria had been caught looking straight at it, the expression on his face open and readable in his surprise. Tieria had been scared - panicked, even. Something about the brief encounter had gotten to him in a way Lockon had never seen in all the time he'd known him. He looked over at Allelujah, taking the pictures from him.
"I'll keep these, if you don't mind."
Allelujah smiled and nodded, handing him the camera as he ran back to dive into the water again. Lockon set the camera down by the towels they'd brought, then wandered over to the tree Tieria had been sitting beneath, settling down in much the same place as he let his mind take apart every moment, looking for what had caused such an unprecedented reaction in Tieria. He still couldn't figure him out, and Lockon's mind kept drifting back to the first picture Allelujah had taken. He looked at it again and wondered if that longing, slightly scared expression would be there if he really were to kiss Tieria, or if it would be replaced by anger. He moaned softly, his body reacting predictably to the thoughts in his head. Looking over at the water, he saw Allelujah and Setsuna engaged in a fierce water fight. He chuckled, knowing they wouldn't miss him for a while yet. He got up and moved further into the jungle, his mind full of the thought of what it might be like to kiss Tieria Erde.
