Demon Rancher

Chapter intro: It's over

 

“Simba! You made it to S Rank!” Vickie shouts excitedly. “Raow!” the elderly Garu jumps twice in the air, the 1st getting him 3 feet off the ground, the 2nd only 1. Vickie is ten years old, and nobody thought that she could make it to S Rank in only four years. But what they did know was that her starting Garu would not last much longer in the ring…

“Hey Vick!” Vickie turns around to see her Shadow Twin, Sheila. Where Sheila was Dark, had short hair, and black eyes, Vickie was Light skinned, had long hair and light brown eyes. The usually serious Shadow Twin was right now cheerful, so Vickie knew that something must have been wrong. Vickie run over to her twin sister and hugs her, bouncing up and down in joy. “We won!” she shouts in Sheila's ear. Sheila, being used to the screaming, just smiles as she hugs her sister back.

Once Vickie calmed down she plopped herself onto the grass. “So what's up?” she asks her twin. Sheila carefully gets down on her knees next to her sister and looks at the ground. A full three minutes pass before she speaks. “King's retired…” Vickie tilts her head “What? What's that mean?” Sheila looks up and Vickie can see a tear fall down onto her sister's knee. “It means…” Sheila glances at Simba, who's resting. “That Simba's going to have to retire too… he has maybe 1 or 2 weeks left to live…”

Vickie's eyes pop out “He's gonna die?!” Simba looks up at the shout that came from his mistress. Sheila shakes her head quickly, before her twin could panic. “No, but you can't use him in battle anymore. If he gets hit, that would be the end of him.” Vickie looks over at her monster “I can keep him on the Ranch though, right? I'll just have him rest a lot.” She tells her sister quietly, her shoulders shaking just at the thought of losing her best friend.

“No, you can't have him on the Ranch. The Association gave me the choice of officially retiring King or have him put on ice.” Vickie frowns “On ice? Why?” Sheila smiles grimly “To preserve his Data so you can Breed him with another monster.” Vickie tilts her head again “Why?” Sheila shakes her head slowly “You can't run a Ranch without monsters…but...” Vickie leans forward “But what? But what?” Sheila looks into Vickie's eyes, her own bright and glowing with excitement.

“Dr. Karnab discovered a new type of monster all together. The people from Carota just imported them to Toggle.” Vickie's own eyes light up. “Yeah, and?” she asks excitedly. Sheila leans forward so that she's only a few inches from Vickie. “Their really strong, and live like a hundred times longer than normal monsters!” Vickie's eyes go wide at the hundred times longer part. “Really?!” “Yeah!” Sheila shouts as she gets up. “They're called Demons.” Vickie stands up and dusts herself off as her sister starts walking away.

“And I'm gonna be the first one in Toggle to raise one!” Vickie looks up in suprise. “No way!” she shouts as she runs after Sheila, who jumps over Vickie's front gate. Sheila laughs as they both race off to the Monster Association to find out more of these new monsters.
