Demon Rancher chapter 4
The Aftermath
After running the 2 miles to the hospital, Vickie gets Sesshomaru to the ER. The nurse, Becky, smiles a reassuring smile at the 10 year old. "He'll be alright Vickie. You can trust Dr. Kedney to fix your puppy." Vickie's eyes go wide in horror. "I don't want him fixed!!" Becky frowns in confusion. This little girl came in the hospital with an injured dog asking for help, and now she doesn't want him treated? Becky looks down at the panicked expression on Vickie's face and mouths an O. She understood now and quickly tries to fix the problem. "Not that kind of fix!" she exclaims while waving her hands like they were saying no.
Becky sighs as she sees the panic be replaced with confusion. "I meant that Dr. Kedney can make him better..." "Oh..." Vickie says then smiles "Then when is he gonna get better?" Becky looks at the clock behind her "Give the doctor some time, Vickie!" Vickie pouts and turns her look on Becky, still waiting for a real answer. Becky crosses her arms and points to the plastic seats down the hall. "Don't start that now. Go and take a seat over there. I'll tell you when he comes out."
Vickie slowly walks to the chairs and takes a seat. Then immediately slumps over and looks at the clock. Only 15 minutes had passed since she brought Sesshomaru in, the gray towel stained red with pink and her dog knocked out from blood loss. The nurses heard her screaming for help at the top of her lungs and ran out to see what was wrong. They saw her terror struck face and the bloody towel and snatched Sesshomaru away from her, saying that everything will be alright.
Vickie looks over at the clock again. It was only 2:50, meaning that a half hour had passed. Vickie looks down the hall to the large double doors leading to the surgery room. That's where they took her puppy. She glances back at the nurse's desk and grins, little fangs gleaming in the light. The nurse wasn't there. That meant she wouldn't know if she moved. Vickie looks back at the door and races to the end of the hallway, all the way to the last seat. Her eyes go wide as she hears the click click of heels on linoleum heading her way. Vickie quickly takes a seat on the edge of the chair. The nurse passes her by and Vickie gets up and walks to the door. Just as she is about to open the door, the doctor comes out, holding her Sesshomaru in his arms. Dr. Kedney holds her puppy in outstretched hands. “I believe-“Sesshomaru's long tail wags into his face, cutting the doctor off. Dr. Kedney impatiently pushes the tail out of his mouth and thrusts the white bandaged ball of fluff into Vickie's waiting arms. “I believe this is yours…”
Vickie grins and hugs her puppy close. Then she runs down the hall, screaming a thank you while re-wrapping her dog in the now clean towel. Vickie dashes around the corner when she runs smack into a darker clone of herself. “Aah!” Her dark twin raises an eyebrow. “So the Doc healed your puppy Vick?” Vickie blinks her eyes and realizes that the clone is actually her twin sister, Sheila. “What are you doing here?” Sheila sighs and walks past Vickie towards the surgery room where the doctor was. “I gotta do my research on new medicines, Vick. My pup's injured himself too, but I don't want to waste my time with a bill.”
Vickie nods her head. Her sister was a lover of alternate medicine. Vickie then realizes that maybe she should get some research done too. She knew that her sister was going to get a book. “Hey Sheila!” She yells after her. Sheila turns around “What?” she asks. “Get me a copy, would ya?” Sheila nods with a grin. “I'll see what I can do.” then she turns around and slams open the door to the surgery room. The door shuts and Vickie can see her twin talking to the doctor. The talking turns into yelling and then Sheila's hands are waving in the air, shaking her little fists in fury. Vickie steps closer to the door and is about to put her ear against it, when the door opens up and a smiling Sheila steps out. She is proudly holding two books in her arms and hands one to Vickie. “There you go.”
Vickie blinks twice while she takes the book. “What did you do?” Sheila gives her sister a dumb look. “Did what? I didn't do anything but ask for an extra copy for you.” Vickie frowns at Sheila. “But I saw you. You were yelling at him and waving your fists in the air.” Sheila raises an eyebrow at Vickie. “Are you sure you aren't seeing things?” Vickie growls at her sister and Sheila bares her teeth. “Why don't you come over? Tell me how your puppy got into this mess and I'll tell you about mine.” Sheila stops to think about it. “Or maybe I can show you instead…”
One hour later…
Vickie and Sheila arrive at Sheila's Ranch. The first thing that Vickie notices is that there are no birds singing in the multiple trees here. The next thing she notices is that some of the boulders on the Ranch are half broken. Sheila pulls her sister from the front gate and leads her to the house. Vickie feels a rush of wind and when she turns around, all she can see is a brown blur streaking through the grass. Sheila sighs “He's been doing that ever since he got here…” Vickie follows the blur with her eyes until it stops with a crack at a boulder. Right in the face. Vickie's eyes get big. “That's the wolf pup you got!” she exclaims. Sheila nods her head and calls him over “Koga!” she calls with a snap of her fingers. Koga looks up at his mistress and takes a few steps toward her, then stops. Sheila narrows her eyes at him. “C'mere!” Koga gives her a wolf grin and bounds over to her from the other side of the Ranch.
He picks up speed as he gets closer. By the time he's ten feet away, he's back to being a blur. The brown blur screeches to a halt under a dark skinned hand in front of his nose. Koga then licks said hand. Vickie frowns when she sees little flecks of white foam around the wolf's muzzle. “Uh, Sheila?” Sheila turns her gaze to her sister. “What?” Vickie looks back down at Koga. “I think he might be rabid.” Sheila looks down at her pup, then bends down so she can see him eye to eye. She wipes her hand over the side of Koga's mouth and sniffs the foam. Then she narrows her eyes at him. “Koga.” she growls at him, and his ears go down. “WHAT have I told you about drinking my CREAM?” she yells in his face. Koga whimpers and backs up a bit. Vickie raises an eyebrow. Her cub was still on milk?
“Sheila…” Vickie starts as her sister grabs her wolf by the scruff of his neck and starts to shout at him. “SHEILA!” Vickie shouts at her sister, making Sheila look at her. “WHAT NOW?” Sheila shouts at Vickie in agitation. Vickie growls at her dumb, older by a minute, sister. “Does he have all of his teeth?” she growls. Sheila visibly clams in her state of confusion. “What- I don't know…” She looks at the squirming pup in her arms and pulls back his lips. “He's got a few spaces in the front.” Sheila reports to her younger sister. Vickie nods “And in the back?” again Sheila pulls back Koga's lips. This time he growls and Vickie growls loudly at him. Koga's ears perk up as he hears another growl directed at him. “Not many teeth in back either.”
Vickie nods sagely. “You know what we've gotta do then, right?” Sheila looks at her in wonder. “No. What?” Vickie grins at Sheila. “We've got to pay Mom a visit.” Sheila nods her head and walks inside of her house. “Then I'll have to go pack.” Vickie shakes her head and walks in after her, not knowing that the lean, brown wolf cub was following her inside. Sheila heads toward the kitchen with a red sack and Vickie sets the towel containing Sesshomaru down on the couch before she follows her. Sheila always made it a big deal when it was time to go see Mom. Vickie really didn't understand it. She loved her Mom. And Mom loved both of her daughters equally as much.
Koga, however, was being a nosy little pup and was sniffing the towel. He poked his nose into it and the towel jumped, making him jump back and be even more curious. Tail wagging, he steps closer to the towel and places one paw on it. The towel growls at him and Koga playfully growls back. Koga noses at an open space and shakes his head roughly to the right, making a part of the gray towel fall back. It revealed a bit of white fluff. Intrigued, Koga nips at the white spot in the towel, and hears a yip in response. Koga jumps as he hears a loud clang coming from the kitchen.
“Vick, I think you should keep your dog with you.” Sheila says from her viewpoint across the table. Vickie turns around and sees Koga nose to nose with Sesshomaru. Her weakened Sesshomaru, in the same room as a healthy, rowdy wolf pup. Vickie rushes in the room, knocks Koga to the side, and picks up Sesshomaru. She takes him into Sheila's kitchen. Sesshomaru's head slowly turns from left to right, taking in all the sights and sounds of the kitchen. He stops his gaze on Sheila. And keeps his gaze set on her eyes. Sheila stares back at him, but he doesn't back down like Koga would.
“I think there's something wrong with your dog, Vick.” Vickie looks down at her pup. “Like what?” Sheila shakes her head. “It's nothing. So how did he wind up in the hospital again?” Vickie sighs and looks down at her little ball of bandaged fluff. “I told him to do some Ukemi's and when I came back outside, he was bleeding.” Vickie looks up at her sister, tears in her eyes. “He was biting himself…” Sheila's eyes widen at the thought. What would she have done if Koga had done that? Now she understands why Vickie was acting so strange on the phone. She might have acted the same way.
“I didn't realize how smart a demon really is…” Sheila murmurs. Just then, Koga walks into the kitchen. Koga looks up at Sheila and wags his tail. Sheila smiles as she bends down and picks him up. “That doesn't mean that I'm calling you smart now.” Sheila frowns as Koga licks her face. “You only have a level 4 intelligence. That means you're slow.” Koga growl whines at her and Sheila smiles. “Yeah, your speed makes you fast, but you're a slow learner.” Sheila looks up at Vickie “Do you know what he did for a Ukemi?” Vickie shakes her head. “What'd he do?” Sheila snorts at the memory. “He ran into a tree over and over again.” Vickie then remembers the splintered tree on the Ranch. “Koga did that?” Sheila nods. “Yeah.” a picture of the broken boulders pops into Vickie's head. “Did he do that to the boulders too?”
“No. That was him just not seeing them while he was running around!” she tells partly to Vickie and partly to Koga. “I hope you know how to see while you run now!” Sheila directs to Koga. Koga whine-barks to Sheila and wags his tail furiously. “I'll take that as a yes.” Vickie stomps her foot to get Sheila's attention. “Are you ready yet?” Sheila looks up and stuffs a few filled up paper bags into the sack and puts it on her shoulder. “Yeah, I think so.” “Then let's go!”
Twenty minutes later…
“How much longer?” Sheila whines. Both of the girls were running the mile to Mother's Ranch. Koga was running next to Sheila, but she wasn't used to running for so long. Vickie was better suited for this, not her. But Vickie was carrying Sesshomaru, so they were running at the same pace. As they round a corner, a gate opens up and they can see their Mother's house. When they come up to the walkway, the girls slow down to a walk.
The Ranch was converted into a park full of different colored Tigers. A green Tiger, a Datonare, runs up to the two and jumps up on Sheila, and barks in her face. Sheila frowns and pushes him off and keeps walking to her mother's house. Vickie is already ahead of her, the dogs either getting out of her way, or wagging their tails from afar. A pink Tiger sniffs the air and bounds over to Sheila, growling. Sheila sees where the Tiger is heading and kicks the Tiger in the side of her head before she could reach Koga.
A whistle tweets loudly and all of the Tigers stop what they are doing to look at their Mistress. Sheila sighs in relief when she sees her mother frowning on the front porch, clawed hands on her hips. “Stop this racket immediately!” Adolpha growls loudly at her little pack. . Vickie grins and runs up to her Mother. And gives her a one armed hug. Adolpha smiles at her daughter warmly. When she looks up to see Sheila just standing there, she waves her over with a toothy smile. “Well don't just stand there, give your Mother a hug!” Adolpha calls out to her daughter. Sheila nods her head and walks up the porch steps and gives her Mother a hug. “Nice to see you, Mom.”
“Nice to see you too-“Adolpha starts, but comes up short when she sees the brown wolf pup coming up her stairs and sit next to Sheila. “Oh, my…” she says while looking down at the pup, then squeezes her daughter even tighter than before. “So that's why you haven't been around! Oh, Baby, I'm so proud of you!” Sheila frowns, then looks at Vickie over her Mother's shoulder mouthing a `What?'. Vickie shrugs her shoulders and mouths an `I don't know' at her. Adolpha pushes Sheila back a little and with tears in her eyes, she picks up Koga. “So what's the name of my new Grandson?” she asks Sheila.
Sheila's eyes bug out. “GRANDSON? I DIDN'T HAVE THAT!” Sheila's shout could be heard from all around the Ranch. Adolpha turns her head away from Koga and looks at Vickie. “That's weird. Because you were over here last month, and you didn't show any signs of-“ “Koga's a demon!” Sheila shouts at her mother. Adolpha sighs and looks back at Koga, who is still suspended in the by her hands. Koga gives her a lick on the nose and Adolpha speaks again. “Now, now, Sheila. I know that most pups are little demons. No doubt you two were…” Vickie giggles. “But that doesn't mean that you can call this little sweetie a demon!”
Vickie shakes her head and with a giggle, explains things to her Mother. “No, Mom. You don't understand. He really is a demon. You've heard of them by now, haven't you?” Vickie's mother squints in confusion, then her eyes widen in understanding. “This is a demon?” she asks while shaking Koga a little. Koga growls, and right before he could bite Adolpha, Sheila snatches him up from her mother's hands. “Yeah!” Vickie replies excitedly while unwrapping the gray towel from Sesshomaru. “And this is my Dog Demon, Sesshomaru!” she says while Sesshomaru blinks and wags his tail at Adolpha. “Oh, isn't he sweet!” Adolpha croons.
“But that isn't why we're here.” Sheila interrupts. “Then what-“ Adolpha starts but Vickie interrupts her. “Sheila don't know how to feed Koga.” Sheila growls and sits down on the porch steps, stroking Koga's fur. “Well, come inside, all of you. I'll tell you how to feed him and then you” Adolpha points a clawed finger at Vickie “tell me why your dog is bandaged! He only looks to be nine weeks old!”
The girls follow Mother inside and sit on the couch when their mother insists as she takes the chair. “Well,” their mother starts, sitting back and counting instructions on her fingers, “first you need a baby's bottle, some puppy milk and some raw meat lightly drenched in the milk.”
Sheila blinks, “What's with the meat?”
“You have to start weaning him sooner or later, silly,” Adolpha smiles, getting up, “Come to the kitchen with me and I'll show you how to feed your baby.”
Sheila sweatdrops, “I told you he's not my baby.”
Adolpha ignores her daughter, walking into the kitchen and turning on the stove, “Now the milk has to be at the right temperature or he won't digest it right.”
“Digest Sheila questions.
“How well his body takes the food,” her mother says, pouring some milk into a baby bottle and handing it to Sheila, “now put on a pot of water and put the bottle in it,” Mother instructs, “Once it gets comfortably warm against your skin, you can hold him like a baby and feed him.”
Vickie wrinkles her nose at the smell of the milk, “Yuck! What's in the milk?”
Adolpha grins at Vickie, “It's a special lean puppy formula. It's very high in calcium to keep his bones and teeth strong and some other vitamins,” she hands Vickie a piece of paper out of nowhere, “and make sure that you give this to your sister.”
Sheila checks the milk, smiles in satisfaction and grabs Koga who was following her all throughout the kitchen, “OK,” she places the bottle to his muzzle, “mom says this is good for you, so take it.”
Koga sniffs the bottle curiously, shyly licks at the nipple, and then happily suckles like an over grown baby.
Sheila stares at him, “I-I think he likes it.”
“Good,” Mother cheers, giving Vickie a bag of meat, “Make sure to feed him at least four bottles a day.”
“Four?!”
“He's a growing baby,” Adolpha laughs, “I wouldn't be surprised if he needed five!”
Sheila sweatdrops, “Pig,” she mutters to Koga, who's still slurping away at his milk.
“Now run along,” Mother says, “and remember to visit more often!!”
Vickie smiles and picks up Sesshomaru once again. “I'm glad you're not like that!” she says as the two girls walk out of their mother's Ranch and head home.
Back at Vickie's Ranch…
Vickie puts Sesshomaru on her bed and turns away from him to face her dresser with a mirror attached. She starts humming a song while she brings out her clothes for the night. Vickie then brings her boom box with her into the bathroom while Sesshomaru jumps off the bed and follows. Only to get the door slammed in his face. Two minutes later the water in the tub is running and the radio is on. Sesshomaru sits by the closed door listening to R. Kelly's `Trapped in the closet' for the next twenty minutes. Just before his brain could be turned to mush by trying to understand the strange song, Vickie comes out with a white towel wrapped around her body.
She almost steps on Sesshomaru as she walks back into her room. Sesshomaru's poor nose hits yet another door. Only this time, it swings back to hit him again! Sesshomaru puts his paw on the door and it swings open enough to let his snout through. He pushes some more with his face, and the rest of him follows. He stops when he sees Vickie looking at him and he wags his tail at her. “Hey sweetie!” she says as she puts her white panties on, “What do you think of the house?” ~I think you need less doors!~ but all that comes out is a bark.
Vickie smiles and puts on her blue nightgown on. “You're gonna sleep in the house tonight, okay?” Sesshomaru nods his head and puts his paws on her leg. “Are you ready for bed?” she asks as she picks him up and places him on the bed. Sesshomaru growls a little when she claps her hands twice and the lights go out. Vickie pulls the sheet over her and puts an arm around Sesshomaru's body, holding him close like a teddy bear. “Good night, my puppy.”
