Chapter 1
Gaara blinked slowly in disbelief as he looked over the report from the new jounin in front of him. “Are you sure this is correct?”

“Yes, My Lord,” the freshly appointed ninja said nervously.

The insomniac shot him a look. “You are dismissed.”

He leaned back in his chair as the jounin exited. If there was one thing his life had always done, it was throw curveballs. This piece of paper was relating something that was waaay too good to be true. He had learned a long time ago to distrust anything positive and destroy the messenger. Not so long ago he had learned to appreciate anything positive and thank the messenger.

He looked up as the door opened and Kankuro strolled in. “What's the report say?”

“What do you mean? It's a report.”

His brother grinned, his face devoid of any paint and his hood conspicuously absent. “That newbie took off out of this office faster than they usually do. That means, brother of mine, that something big is in that report.”

“Reports are private.”

“Since when?”

The Kazekage sighed, it was just his luck that his brother had to be so nosy - well, at least it wasn't Temari; she would probably barricade the door and windows until he cracked and revealed the information or threw her from his office. “The councilor of the daimyo is in a neighboring village.”

“So?”

“This is the one who keeps convincing the idiot daimyo to cut our budget.”

“Ah, so we gonna kill him?”

“Probably.”

“Probably!?”

“And exactly who do you propose I send? You are on vacation time and so is Temari - hell, I'm on vacation time.”

“What about Baki?”

“On a mission.”

“The other jounin?”

“Missions.”

“Chuunin?”

“Please, this is actually important.”

“So…” Kankuro trailed off suddenly, apparently picking up on his train of thought - a skill he had picked up over the last few years. “Oh no, don't tell me you're gonna go?”

“Who else is there?”

Kankuro sighed, all the way down into his chest. “You want me and Temari to go, right?”

“I never said that.”

“You don't have to. When do we leave?”

You are staying here, I'm leaving in the morning.”

“Come on, why am I staying?”

“Someone needs to keep on eye on the village while I'm gone.”

Kankuro rolled his eyes. “This place runs itself. I'm going.”

Gaara returned the gesture. “Whatever.”

Kankuro walked out of the Kazekage's building and headed toward the house he shared with his siblings - more so with Temari ever since Gaara had been appointed Kazekage. Lately though, ever since that lazy Leaf ninja had popped the big question, Temari was spending more and more time in Konoha planning her wedding. Oh crap, that thing's only a month away.

He walked up to the door of his house and entered his home. Temari sat on the sofa, flipping through a magazine. “Well?” she said, not looking up. “Is he still alive over there?”

“Yup, but he's leaving tomorrow on a mission…”

“A mission? Why is he accepting missions?”

“That military councilor of the daimyo is in the next village over. So he's going to go and secure our yearly budget.”

“You going?”

“Yeah.”

“Does that mean I'm going?”

“No clue.”

Temari groaned; her brother was always so hard to get info from. “Alright I'll go.”

“I don't recall saying…”

“Save it, if he let you go he wants both of us to go.”

Kankuro shrugged.

The next morning - 3 am - found the Sand siblings setting out from the village to the east toward the mountains that bordered the Wind and Fire Countries. It was about noon when they caught the signs of the village, which was doing nothing to hide its presence.

“Well, now the fun begins,” Temari muttered.
