Abandonment

“You abandoned everything.”
No. Everything had abandoned her.
“You can't go back.”
Why would she want to?
“This life isn't easy.”
The one in Konoha had ripped her heart out. Life had only gotten easier from there.
When Sakura had appeared before Itachi, wounded and slowly dying, he had asked her what she wanted of him. She had said nothing, but limped towards him slowly, and once in front of him, had gripped the tiniest edge of his sleeve.
“Use me. Kill me. Do whatever pleases you, but please let it end in death.”
She had been betrayed.
“You desire death so badly?”
Yes. Life was far more painful.
Naruto… Ino… Shikamaru… Neji… they had left her for dead. They hadn't come to her aid when she'd screamed through the communications system. She hadn't even gotten a reply. They'd left her to battle four Oto Jounin without reinforcements. Left her to die at the hand of a filthy enemy. And now she submitted herself into the hands of one who was her ultimate enemy, for it was he who caused everything to fall apart from the beginning.
But the Sharingan Master had not killed her. He had taken her to the Akatsuki, and she was healed. Even now, years later, she roamed with him and Kisame, and remained silent. She beckoned to death whenever it seemed possible, but always, she was just strong enough to beat it. Strange how she couldn't seem to die without a fight, and how the fight would never let her die. She had seemed cursed since the day her `comrades' left her to meet her maker.
“Do you hate me?”
She had asked him that one night.
“No.”
The same night he gave her this response. She had not startled; any light in her beryl eyes had long-since been extinguished.
“Do I matter?”
She had not received the expected answer. She thought he would say no. But silence festered between them until, somehow, a wall around her heart was shattered. He'd kissed her. Neither passionate, not lusty, nor was it particularly innocent. It was just a kiss.
“Those who matter are not abandoned.”
But she understood. Konoha had considered her no more than a pawn to be sacrificed.
But… he was the one who had not abandoned her. Had never. Would never. Even without love, for there was none, she mattered. To him, if no-one else.
