Disclaimer: I don’t own Naruto. If I claimed to, Masashi Kishimoto would send his ninjas to kick my ass.

~ Chapter 1 ~

In the tearing darkness find me,

The shattered light forever binds me.

Under the silver silence of the moon,

When the smallest kindness can be your doom.

She walked silently through the trees using as much training as a seven year old could possibly muster. I’ve lost everything. Everyone hates me. Maybe I should just kill myself and get it over with.

‘Ah, child. But then where would I be?’
said a voice in her head.

“Sigh. You’re right, Ryuu-sensei. You’d die too.” She hung her head and continued walking. Ten minutes later the voice called a sudden stop. Her shoes scuffed in the dirt.

‘There is some one else here. Someone...like you.’

She gasped. Like me...

A blond little boy sat under a tree. His gaze was blank as he stared off into space. His thoughts were not on the trees surrounding him or the moon at which he was gazing. They were instead on the events of earlier that day.

Flashback

He was walking through Konoha’s shopping square, all smile and bounce. Maybe today would be the day, when he would finally get a kind word, maybe a pat on the head.

But all he was met with was cold hate filled stares. As he passed by mothers pulled their children away and men stepped in front of their wives. Naruto sighed. It looked like today was going to be a normal day after all.

His thoughts were interrupted when he suddenly bumped into something.

“Hey watch where you’re going!” Naruto looked up to see a man standing over him. He was wearing a hitai-ate on his forehead. The man’s face change from annoyance to a smirk. “You’re the little demon gaki. Well I’ll teach you to mess with me!” Naruto let out whimper of fear as the man pulled out a kunai. It came back red tipped and the boy let out a cry of pain. Why was no one helping him? People averted their eyes as they walked by and didn’t make move to stop the man. Maybe they would finally be rid of the monster child.

Naruto scrambled away as fast as his small legs could carry him. “Yes you better run little demon. Because if I see you again I’ll cut your throat out!”

He could hear shouts of accent as he fled the street...

End Flashback

He clutched his arm as a searing pain shot through it. A long gash ran the length of his forearm from the wrist to elbow. It was no longer bleeding, which was not unusual for him. What was different was that the wound hadn’t closed. He didn’t know anything about healing, but he did know that any scratches he had acquired before had always healed within a day. But it had not healed, instead it was throbbing and burning and he was starting to feel a little dizzy. Naruto gave a gasp as his arm became twice as painful. It felt like it was spreading!

A small scuff came from the bushes. Naruto froze. I can’t let any of the villagers see me like this! They’ll hurt me more! He drew behind the tree.

“Daijobu desu ka?” asked a quiet voice. His head snapped up.

A girl stood in front of him she looked about his age. She had shoulder length fiery red hair and she was wearing...sunglasses? That’s weird...

“Are you alright?” she asked again. “W-who are you?” he asked her.

She looked at him carefully, then her face softened. “My name is Akami. What is yours?”

He hesitated. “U-Uzumaki Naruto...” he knew the recognition would come now, and she’d probably run from him. He was the boy all the adults called monster after all.

To his suprise she just smiled. “Nice to meet you.” she suddenly looked down. “What’s wrong with your arm?”

“I...got a slash on it.” He said cautiously. He wasn’t used to talking to someone who wasn’t sending him hate glares. She crouched down beside him. “May I see?”

He slowly extended his arm, still not sure wether he could trust her or not. When the moonlight hit the wound she gasped. It was badly swollen and dark lines were radiating from it.

“Doshita-n desu ka!?” (1) her voice was shocked and the slightest bit angry. Naruto flinched.

“P-please don’t get m-mad!” he stuttered. Akami calmed. “Don’t worry, I’m not mad at you. But who did this to you?”

“A ninja in the square.” he whispered. He didn’t know this girl at all, but she seemed to genuinely care. And it was enough. “All I did was bump into him...and he got me.”

“Why would he do something like that?”

“I-I....Because everyone hats me.” his head hung.

She gently reached out a hand and touched the arm. He let out a small cry of pain that quickly became a whimper. She bit back a gasp the moment she touched him.

‘Kyuubi...’

She smiled. Just like me...

“This looked poisoned, and that’s why it’s not closing up.” she looked up at him. “Would you like me to heal it for you?” Wide blue eyes stared up at her in shock.

“You would do that for me?” he asked.

“Hai.” said the girl.

Naruto pulled his sleeve out of the way so she could get an unobstructed view. Akami reach for her sunglasses...and revealed golden yellow eyes with slits for pupils. She closed her eyes and stayed silent for a few seconds, and just when he stated thinking maybe she was asleep, her eyes snapped open and she gave another small smile. “Gomen Naruto-kun, this might hurt a little.” She suddenly swiped her hand across the wound.

Instead of the searing pain he had been expecting, it was a small sting followed by a golden light and a warmth that spread up his arm and throughout his body. He looked at his arm and saw that it had healed without so much as a scar. He looked up at her with a grin.

“Domo arigato Akami-chan!” She looked startled at the suffix for a moment but then returned his grin with one equally large.

“You’re welcome Naruto-kun. What village do you live in? I’ll help you get home!”

Naruto shifted then pointed in a direction through the trees. “Konohagakure.” He turned back to her. “What village do you live in Akami-chan? Your parents must be getting worried!”

He was surprised when her face suddenly looked downcast. “I...My parents are dead.”

Naruto put a hand on her shoulder to comfort her. Then an idea came to his mind that made his eyes light up like a thousand stars. “I have a great idea! Why don’t you come live with me Akami-chan! I’ve got room!”

She looked up at him with widened eyes. “Really? I can stay with you?”

“Hai! It’ll be great ‘cause you’re really nice and you don’t hate me!”

In a split second he found himself on the ground as Akami launched herself at him and glomped him around the neck. “Arigato Naruto-kun!” She quickly got off him and helped him up. “Are you sure your parents won’t mind?” she asked concernedly.

It was Naruto’s turn to look shadowed. “I never knew my parents.” his eyes were sad and glazed, remembreing the days he had spent wondering why he didn’t have a loving mother and father.

Just as fast the look was gone and he didn’t even try to hide the grin on his face. “But it’s alright because now you can stay with me!” His blue eyes met her golden ones and moment of complete understanding was shared. Then she slipped her sunglasses on and gestured toward the village. “Lead the way Naruto!” She slipped her small hand into his as they walked off throught the trees.

It was the beginning that changed the end.
