Chapter Nine

The Mission from Hell

Little sister, little sister…

Sakura woke up to the soft hiss of her guardian.

Your human guardian wants you up and ready for your mission assignment at noon its eleven thirty now you need to wake up.

“I'm up,” Sakura grumbled sleepily.

Good morning Kitten.

“Good morning, Shi'i'na, She'li'na, Ki're'na… oh and you too Ha'ki'to.”

Thanks ever so little sister.

Mornin' to you too Ki'li!

Greeting Ki'li'na'ra.

“Ah Sakura, I'm glad to see you are awake. We have to go get our assignments in about a half an hour.”

“I know, Kakashi, my guardians were just telling me.”

“Good then why don't you go get showered and changed and I will make breakfast.”

“Sounds good to me.”

Sakura walked into the bathroom and within minutes Kakashi could hear the sounds of the shower being turned on. Pinching the bridge of his nose he turned to go into the kitchen. He had just spent the morning trying to get rid of Gai who was as ecstatic about the councils as his pupil. That in itself was enough for Kakashi to pound him into the ground while training.

“I can't keep thinking about her this way.” He muttered to himself. “She is my student, my responsibility and she is promised.”

He spoke the words out loud hoping that by vocalizing his thoughts he might actually start to believe them. It wasn't working. The thought of her being with Lee or anyone else was enough to cause the usually serene warrior to seethe.

Sakura walked into the kitchen where Kakashi stood back to the door, white knuckled and staring menacingly out the window.

“Well I'm sure you must have horrible issues with your window Kakashi, you promised me breakfast and I'm hungry you can glare at you window later.”

Kakashi chuckled at Sakura's cheek his anger evaporating in her presence. The rich sound causing Sakura to shiver.

“As my Lady wishes.”

Breakfast was a quiet affair. Both Shinobi were so deep in thought they barely tasted what they were eating.

“Alright then,” Kakashi said finally breaking the silence. “You wash I'll dry. I cooked after all.”

Sakura huffed but didn't object. “Kakashi?” she asked after a moment. Kakashi turned toward her. “What is it like?” she asked quietly. “Going on long missions, I mean.”

Kakashi thought for a moment. “When you go by yourself, it is lonely, very lonely. You are an island in a sea of strangers. You can't trust anyone, any friends you make you will likely never see again so you are better off not making them. When you go with a group you get very close to those you go with. You are all each other have. You learn their habits and they yours. In most cases you form unbreakable bonds with your team mates. That is why Shinobi are so close.”

Sakura nodded. “What is it like getting back?”

“You feel like you are in a strange place all over again things have happened that you were not part of and people have changed in ways you can never foretell. You have to learn to fit in all over again.”

Sakura shuddered, “I was afraid of that.”

Kakashi put down the last dish, and moved to stand behind Sakura. He wrapped his arms around her waist and rested his chin on her head. “Don't worry Sakura I'll help you. Everything will be fine.”

Sakura leaned back into his embrace. “Thank you.”

“Your welcome.”

“I don't want to leave.”

“I don't want to go either.”

Sakura glanced at the clock.

“We're late.”

Kakashi chuckled.

“I'm always late.”

A half hour after they were supposed to arrive at headquarters they finally made their appearance.

“Sakura, my love, you are late are you hurt?”

Back away human.

“My love I get the feeling that your pets don't like me.”

Sakura glared at Kakashi who was trying to hide a snicker behind his mask. “They are not pets Lee; they are my kin, my guardians.”

Lee's reply was cut off as Tsunade appeared. “It's about time.”

Kakashi shrugged.

Tsunade glared.
“Moving on, the council has decided upon your orders. You will be going to the Water country as a three man team. Sakura you and Lee will be going as betroths, Kakashi you will be going as Sakura's uncle. You are to take up residence in Village Hidden in the Mist and are to report back to a contact every month on your findings. From you information we will be getting a feel for the situation which we know is very dire. Midoriko needs to be put in charge and the invaders must be annihilated. You will be gone on this mission for a total of five months. After which if the mission is deemed a success Sakura and Lee will move up to the rank of Jounin. Now for individual orders...”

She handed each of them a scroll.

“Kakashi, you are in charge, you will meet once a week with the contact. You are to be doing most of the work in spying. You are to see to it that Sakura's secret is not publicized and that our presence in the Water country is unknown. You are also to teach both of them new techniques and skills and report to me their growing improvement. I also want you to report any change in relationship. Good Luck.”

“Lee, your primary mission is to learn from Kakashi and to protect and woo Sakura. Spying is not you strong suit so I will not ask you to do that, I will ask you however to act as an escort for Sakura when she goes out. You need to focus on not acting in any way out of the ordinary.”

“Sakura, you must learn from Kakashi develop your skills and spy. You have a talent for genjitsu I'd like to see it realized. You are also very intelligent you will assist Kakashi in spying but you will gather your information from the town and you will put the information together as best you can to give us the clearest picture you can as to what is going on. You need to get closer to Lee and try to accustom your cats to his presence. You must keep your secrets too your self but use your abilities to for the best of the group.”

“Now then you will be trained in the mannerisms and customs of the Water country for two weeks and then you will start your journey. Once you are within five days of the village you must act like civilians no martial arts no chakra. When you need to practice find a secluded area and ward it.

Tsunade pursed her lips. “I think that is everything. Report to training at nine sharp tomorrow. Dismissed.”

“Sakura my love isn't this wonderful. We are to be given five months to get to know each other very well. We'll be in love in no time. It will be so exciting…”

Sakura stopped listening, five months; she was going to be gone for five months she'd never been away from home longer then a week. Not to mention she already had a headache after only and hour with Lee there was just no way she was going to survive so long with him.

Ki'li don't look so down girl we'll be with you.

She'li'na is right Ki'li'na'ra we will not leave you, you will not be without your kin.

Ki're'na said it Kitten we are your kin you will not be alone especially if that annoying human boy is going to be there.

Little sister, you have my word. If he gets too bad I will eat him regardless of the indigestion I will face afterwards.

Sakura laughed, “Such a sacrifice, I really appreciate it Ha'ki'to.”

“Come on Sakura its time we learned what you can do with these new skills of yours.”

“Do not worry my love I shall come too and with my loving care you shall blossom into the flower that you are.”
“I'm sorry Lee; Hokage told me that when I was training Sakura in her cat given powers I was not to let anyone else be there. Her powers are to be kept secret besides Gai told me you were going to spar today?”

“Of course, forgive my love I promised Gai-sensei I would spar with him after the meeting. I shall train with you next time. Farewell my love.”

Sakura walked over to Kakashi and put her head on his chest. “Do you think he ever hears anything we say to him?”

“I don't know Sakura.”

“If it's the case this mission is going to be hell.”

“I couldn't put it better myself.”

Comments:

Well this chapter hit me out of the blue. I actually tried to sit down and write yesterday and failed. So I was not expecting to get a chapter out this weekend. Ah well I'm not complaining. Though I must say this chapter is a bit sappy but I digress but here and sappy then not at all.
