August 27th, 2019. The Great Collision…
In the days following the Great Collision few people were spared, surviving only by seeking refuge in the vast caverns beneath Mt. Fuji and Mt. Aso. Legends state that Kami, the creator of the heavens had grown tired of the people he had created, therefore he decided to destroy man-kind by causing a storm of meteorites to fall to earth destroying those who did not heed his words. However, when he found that several clans had hidden beneath the mountains the creator became angry. His daughter, Satin, Queen of the underworld, proposed that they have a little fun with the insolent mortals. She bound the essence of four demons in separate boxes, each one marked with a different symbol, Death, Wrath, Greed, and Pride…Satin gave her father a choice of a demon for his use, the creator of the heavens chose the box marked pride. Satin then released the demon essences from their boxes and each took the form of a different animal, Death took the form of a white tiger, Greed the form of a yellow snake, Wrath the form of an orange kitsune, and finally Pride took the form of a silver and green neko. As Satin unleashed the demons upon the world, she commanded them to mingle with humans and cause them pain and suffering and told them that they each must take a human host to preserve themselves. However, each of the demons possessed a soul, giving them each the chance to decide for themselves as they entered the mortal realm and being able to manipulate their bodies to mimic those of the humans they were sent to punish. Pride, however, found herself enthralled by humans and their unique behaviour, taking the form of a silver haired maiden, Pride found herself mingling with a human family called the Shinkiro clan, these people had peculiar abilities that manipulated energy within themselves as attacks to protect their families and their small village. Pride simply fell in love with this village and its people, eventually she became part of the clan and married the village champions son, Shinkiro Kowaru. Pride changed her name to Renge Aerith prior her marriage…However her happiness was not to last… Her brothers found her village and began slaughtering it's people and scattering them into the surrounding forest, each of the people carried a special ability, the Kekei Genkai, a blood borne trait that uses chakra to the advantage of its owner…
After the devastation that befell her village she left to prevent her brothers from destroying the lives of others. Aerith wandered the many paths across the continent following the trails of blood and destruction left in her brothers wake…
April 17th, 3018. 999 years after the Great Collision.
Deep within the Leaf country, the small village of Konoha sat nestled in the valley along side a large cavern wall. The four faces of the past hokage's kept silent watch over the peaceful village. Nary a soul stirred in the sleeping village, except for one… Naruto... Naruto always woke shortly before the sun rose over the sleepy valley. But this morning he cautiously watched the village as he sat atop the stone faces. He had been there all night, something was going to happen. He just didn't know what would happen, but he would be prepared to fight for his home. He would not be caught sleeping; he would be armed and ready, unlike the rest of those asleep in the village.
The Hokage had been keeping his eye on Naruto and realized that something had the boy on edge. Normally the boy would be out training and causing mischief, but this morning he silently sat atop the carved cliff-side watching the village for some hint of danger. The Hokage smiled to himself, `Soon the village will need a new hokage, and after all I can't live forever. Naruto has been dealt bad hands in this card game of life. Perhaps he will be a good candidate…' his smile faded quickly as his thoughts turned to the many dangerous happenings occurring in the Shadow country surfaced in his mind. The hokage's weathered face took on a sad, pained look. His granddaughter would be arriving soon, hopefully…
Kurai awoke panting heavily as her nightmare lingered in her head, she sat on the edge of her bed hiding her face in her hands as she wept. Flashes of pale lifeless faces, blood spatters on the walls, people screaming and pleading for their lives flooded her vision… They were caught off guard; they didn't have a chance in hell, all the shinobi lay passed out from celebrating too much the night before. It had been her parents' anniversary night, filled with celebrating clan members joyously toasting the Shinkage and his wife, a night to remember. One face plagued her consciousness, pallid with yellow snakelike eyes, the serpentine tongue tasting the air, the very presence of the man oozed of a dark evil forgotten in folktales. Yet the monster had let her live, slaying her entire village, not sparing any soul but hers. He had his men murder everyone, men, women, and children of all ages…infants, school kids, teens, moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas…everyone dead…slain by the Sound. Kurai was sure that her country would soon fade into non-existence, the shadow country would disappear into the darkness swallowed by the Sound country and their beastly leader, Orochimaru. Kurai froze when she heard footsteps outside her tent, she quickly stepped into her fighting pose aware that she was only wearing a tank top and shorts, poised for attack she nearly injured one of the shinobi from Konoha. Blushing fiercely she apologized to the shocked shinobi. He informed her that they were within walking distance to Konoha, and would arrive before noon. After the shinobi left, Kurai became lost in her thoughts as she dressed for the rest of the trip, she found her silver halter top with the mandarin collar and green embroidery up the sides. “This will look lovely with my black cargos with the silver studs and buckles,” she said aloud to herself, “and I'll wear my headband with the shadow country symbol on my forehead. And I'll wear the Shinkage sigil, my nails are already painted black, so that only leaves my black wristbands and silver bangles.” Kurai cautiously applied her makeup, being careful not to smudge her eyeliner and mascara. She applied a pale pink lip gloss to her lips, and carefully braided her hair. Tying her headband, she carefully packed her things and stored the tent before taking her place in the center of a large group of shinobi. The shinobi started running and soon Kurai took the lead, the shinobi struggled to keep up with the young princess, yet somehow she drastically outpaced them. Soon Kurai reached the gate of Konoha village, she decided to sit in the shade of a large tree and wait for the others to arrive. She started to doze in the cool shade breathing in the scent of warm earth and cool leaves; she slowly became aware of the sounds coming from behind the gate. She could hear children laughing, old people talking in the market, and soldiers joking with one another at their posts. Her heart grew heavy and filled with sorrow as memories of her home land invaded her mind. Suddenly a sound brought her back to reality as she heard the shinobi approaching, she stood and took her place in the center again. The huge gates slowly swung outwards to admit them entrance to the village hidden in the leaves. Kurai strode among the shinobi with her head held high ignoring the stares from the villagers as they passed through the village square. Soon they arrived at the Hokage's home, a large pagoda shaped building loomed huge as they approached. Kurai spotted her grandfather at the top of the stairs leading into the building. The shinobi kneeled at the bottom as she swiftly mounted the flight of stairs. At the top she bowed to her grandfather and was shocked when he gathered her into his arms in a tight hug. She looked into his eyes was surprised to see that he had been crying. He kissed her forehead. “I'm so glad that you are safe my dear. If only your mother were here, I miss her so much. You look almost just like her, except for your hair and markings” He sighed then hugged her closer, “she was so proud of you. And you'll never know how much they loved you. You are the last of your fathers clan my dear. The last survivor of the Shinkiro clan, and the only one like you left in this world. Your demon markings are quite eye catching my dear child. I am surprised you didn't cover them.” Kurai sighed, she was used to them as were her people, the village hidden in the shadows was full of those with strange tattoo like markings declaring them of demon descent, however hers were the most admired in the village. People in her village had told her that they matched her eyes when the markings began to show up on her 14th birthday. Her father had had black markings that looked like wings on his shoulders, and permanent eyeliner of the same shade black as his hair. Her mother however had had beautiful long mahogany red hair that nearly touched the ground; she also had had deep blue eyes like Kurai's grandmother, Kiva. Kurai, however, had inherited her father's toxic green eyes, and strangely enough her markings were also the same shade of green as her eyes. Her markings slightly resembled vines climbing up her sides and across her shoulders and collarbones, the marks also made a split at her lower ribs to reach down and across to her navel and stop a few inches away and below it. The vines also traveled down her legs to her ankles and wrapped around to give her green vine shaped anklets. On her shoulders she had the same wing-like markings as her father, only the same toxic color as her eyes. “Grandfather I'm so happy to see you again. It has been a long time since we last visited, hasn't it?” she queried, she continued in a more serious note by adding “What's going to happen to me now grandpa?” she hung her head in a sad gesture. The Hokage was taken aback by his grandchild's submissive behavior. He was used to her being aggressive in what ever she pursued, being submissive wasn't in her clans nature, she had gained a high enough skill level to pass the chunin exams when she was nine years old. This wasn't the Kurai he had grown to love; this was a sad copy of his beloved granddaughter. What had happened during the massacre to make her so sad and withdrawn?
Naruto found himself focusing in on the steps of the Hokage's home. He found himself staring into a pair of neon green eyes staring out from a fair skinned face outlined by a set of silver bangs and strands running down the sides of her face in front of her ears. Naruto could see sorrow and hurt reflecting in her otherwise bright eyes. He sensed something else emanating from her, though he couldn't recognize the sensation. He could also feel a warm sensation spreading from his stomach to other parts of his anatomy.
Kurai could feel the concern emanating from her grandfather; she knew what he was thinking. She would never tell him that she had been forced to watch her parents die, and witness the slaughter of her people and not be able to help them. She would never tell anyone what had happened; she had sworn to herself she would never tell anyone about what monster had done to her. And she would never say a word about the beast forcing her father to watch as he raped his only daughter, then slit his throat She could feel eyes watching her, she looked up over her grandfathers shoulder and became locked onto a pair of blue eyes bright with curiosity. She sensed his demon chakra right away, and recognized the boy as the one who held Kyuubi inside of him. She smiled inwardly; he could see the perplexed look in his eyes as he felt her demon chakra as well. She wanted to know this boy better, she had the sensation that they would meet again. One way or another, they would meet again…
Orochimaru had left after killing the shadow village's Shinkage and people, leaving only one tortured soul, the Shinkage's 15 year old daughter. He had enjoyed torturing the girl; he especially enjoyed tracing her markings with a razor sharp kunai. He had always been a sadistic sort of soul. Orochimaru smiled as he recalled the tears streaming down the girls face, she had been really brave at first but he slowly started trying to break her over the few weeks he had kept her. She was resilient and stubborn, he loved having those kinds to torture, they lasted longer and were a lot more fun to break if she had been male he would have chosen her to be his next host. But as it was he had his eyes on another, Sasuke Uchiha. This was the one he had marked to be his next host; the boy had every visual aspect he desired in a host. Orochimaru decided he wanted to get the girl back, but when he went to get her from the Shadow village, she had disappeared. He couldn't sense her demon chakra anywhere nearby. He didn't know where to look for her, and he couldn't ask the corpses where she went, he tasted the air with his serpentine tongue disgusted that he had let her escape so easily.
Back in the village of Konohagakure Kurai had discussed her living arrangements with her grandfather. They had settled everything and she would be living in the same apartment complex as Naruto Uzumaki. Her grandfather would take care of her apartment and power needs, as long as she took care of getting food and hygiene needs. Basically she would be on her own, she was happy about living alone. She had wanted her own place to live for a while, or at least since she had passed the chunin exams. She had also been assigned to team seven to continue her genin training; her new sensei's name was Kakashi. She was to meet her new team at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. Searching the boys' eyes she had found out his name, Naruto Uzumaki. And strangely enough she had the good fortune to be living in the same complex as him. After all she had said that they would meet again many years ago when they first met…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~FLASHBACK (10 years before) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kurai and her parents had made the journey from Shingakure, a.k.a the Village Hidden in the Shadows, to visit her grandfather; the Hokage of Konoha. She snuck away while her parents were talking about important adult stuff with her grandpa, to Kurai that stuff was way too boring for her. There were no kids her age at all in her grandpa's home, or kids of any age at all for that matter. She used a simple shadow technique to get past the guards at the door of the Hokage's home. Walking along the crowded streets Kurai felt happy, she did not have to worry about her mom embarrassing her in front of everyone. She had used a henge technique to disguise her hair; she made it blonde instead of the usual silver white. She had looked in a mirror and found that she made a good blonde. Some people turned and stared at the little 6 year old blonde walking down Main Street alone, but other than that they left her alone. As she rounded a corner she walked right into a boy who looked to be her own age, she sat sprawled on the sidewalk staring into his cerulean blue eyes, he smiled and held out his hand to help her up. He smiled and apologized smiling, “sorry! My name is Naruto! What's your name?” Kurai was taken off guard by how he introduced himself using such a loud voice, but she immediately took a liking to him. “My name is Kurai Shinkiro! Pleasure to meet you Naruto!” He smiled and asked if she was hungry, because he knew someone at a ramen shop who gave him free ramen. “Sure let's go!” She beamed at him. He led her to a shop nearby and introduced her to his friend, Iruka, a young man with a scar across his nose and a pleasant smile. He bought them both a bowl of ramen; he asked her if she was lost. “No, I got away from my parents cuz they were talkin' about boring stuff with my grandfather.” she replied, “They always talk about stuff like that whenever we visit, ever since my Grammy died that is. My daddy doesn't mind cuz he knows I can take care of myself and I'll always come back after I find something to do.” Iruka watched the girl as she ate with knowing eyes, he knew who this little girl was talking about. Her parents were the Shinkage, and his wife Kuniko the Hokage's daughter. He remembered seeing Lady Kiva with a silver haired child eating ramen here a few years ago, shortly before her death she told him about her special little granddaughter and introduced them one time when they were visiting. Iruka smiled as he watched the two blondes talking animatedly to each other, most people wouldn't have a thing to do with little Naruto simply because he was the vessel that held a dangerous demon sealed inside of him. Iruka was about the only person who liked Naruto, other than the late Lady Kiva. She had treated the small boy like he was her own child. Naruto was being shifted from home to home simply because no one wanted a demons host in their homes with their own children. `If only I were old enough to take care of Naruto,' Iruka thought while observing the two children, `He would have a chance to be a regular kid.' Suddenly Kurai announced that she had to go or her mom would have a search party out looking for her, she bowed and thanked Iruka for the ramen. And then she hugged Naruto and Iruka before heading out into the darkened main street waving good-bye as she ran down the street. Iruka smiled seeing the big grin on Naruto's face, `Strange little girl… But at least she liked Naruto. She'll be back one day and turn Konoha upside down…' he thought sipping at his chicken broth left over from his ramen, meanwhile Naruto was digging into another bowl.
~~~~~~~~~~~END OF FLASHBACK~~~~~~~~~~~
Kurai settled down on her bed thinking of what her new sensei looked like and what were her soon to be new team mates like? She lay on her bed staring up at the ceiling unable to sleep. She began to wonder if maybe Naruto remembered her from all those years ago, but surely he had many friends though after all as nice as he was. As she lay there in the dark, she could hear the people in the apartment below hers, getting it on, loudly getting it on. She frowned; she would have to remind herself to cast a silence seal on her walls and floor in the morning. After a while the couple downstairs grew quiet, finally giving her the chance to sleep.
Ino: Soooo… Sakura wanna go and pick some flowers with me? *smiles at Sakura hopefully*
Sakura: Why on earth would I wanna do that with you? *frowns at Ino*
Kurai: *whispers to Ino* Why don't ya just tell her that you have a mega crush on her already!
Ino: Wha?!?!?! I can't do that!
Sakura: Can't do what? 0_-
Kurai: Tell you that she-oomurfmfurmmurf…
Ino: What she means to say is that I can't enjoy going to pick flowers all by myself, that's why I wanted you to come with me.
Kurai: *slowly shakes her head side to side embarrassed at Ino's excuse* Hopeless…
