“Another year’s gone by, Hyuuga. Do you feel old yet?” Neji twisted himself in his blankets; head cocked back to stare at the blinking red numbers of his digital clock. It was almost four in the morning and he had yet to actually be tired. This wasn’t a rare occurrence – it happened three times a week – and he didn’t mind not sleeping. Extremely odd things happened in the wee hours of the morning.
Tink!
Neji sat up in his bed and looked over at his window. The curtains were drawn so he couldn’t see, but he knew that sound anywhere. The Hyuuga prodigy stepped onto the cold, wood floor, and slowly made his way over to his window. He pulled back the curtain and pushed the window wide open. Two floors down stood a boy with red hair, his hands stuffed into his pants’ pockets.
The redhead made a motion for the pale-eyed boy to come downstairs, then headed off in the direction of the back door. Neji watched him go with furrowed eyebrows, shivering in the slight breeze running over his bare chest. It was strangely cold for a summer.
Neji pulled a shirt over his head, pulled on his shoes, and tiptoed past his parents’ room with great care. He slid down the banister – the stairs were really creaky – and headed towards the back door, where he grabbed his keys from the tiny bowl next to the door. The red haired boy was on the other side, glaring at the little gnome figurines lining the grass. The boy had a passionate dislike of them.
“Happy birthday.” Gaara took a couple steps towards the Hyuuga, then placed a tiny kiss on his cheek. Neji tried to fight the blush he knew was crawling into his cheeks and instead smiled back.
“It’s kind’ve early, ne?” The pale-eyed boy grinned.
“That’s the point.” Gaara took the other boy by the hand, then pulled him through the tiny gate of his backyard, and out into the street. The red haired boy didn’t say anything as they trudged through the dark, fireflies skirting around them, other insects chirping. It was only when they came to a gate that Gaara finally spoke, his voice low. “I have a present for you.”
“Yeah?”
“Mmm.” Gaara opened the gate, and pulled the other boy inside. It was a kiddy park, with little slides and a little merry-go–round in the middle of it all. The redhead pulled Neji over to it and motioned for him to sit down. “I’ll give it to you after the sun sets.” When Neji was sitting securely on the merry-go-round, Gaara grabbed onto one of the bars and smirked down at him. “Hold on tight, Neji.”
He started to run, slow at first, then picked up his speed and jumped on. He made his way to Neji with some difficulty and kneeled beside him.
“You’re nearly an adult, and I thought we needed to have some fun.”
“At a kiddy park?” Neji snorted.
“That, and the sunrise is beautiful here.” The redhead stepped back onto the ground and started the spinning process all over again. Each time he jumped back on, and each time he explained to Neji why they were there. Each time Neji got just that more excited.
Finally, when the wheel had stopped spinning, Gaara took a seat behind Neji, the pale-eyed boy sitting between his legs, and they waited for the sun. The Hyuuga listened to Gaara’s heartbeat in his chest, and watched the orange-red of the sun as it appeared over the horizon. It crawled slowly across the ground; lighting up the patches of oddly placed dirt and grass.
“Thank you for bringing me here, Gaara.” Neji smiled. He tipped his head back against the other’s chest, reached his hand behind Gaara’s head, and pulled him down for a kiss. As the sun painted Gaara’s skin pink, Neji parted his lips to deepen the kiss, the other boy’s tongue brushing over his own. It was a sweet moment, one that came only when Gaara and Neji could get away from their families.
They walked back to Neji’s house, hand in hand, and didn’t worry about the Hyuuga’s father seeing them come up the street. The present Gaara had for him would solve all of their problems.
“We have to stop here.” Gaara said, gently grabbing his boyfriend by his elbow. The red haired boy pulled him behind a large tree, and spun him around by his shoulders. “I have to give you your present before you go home. I don’t know when I’ll see you next.”
“So what is it?”
“Close your eyes first.” Gaara waited until the pale-eyed boy had his eyes closed before pulling an envelope from his back pocket. He made sure the contents were still there before pushing it into the Hyuuga’s hands. “All right, you can open them back up.”
Pale eyes opened to stare at the envelope, confusion showing in the non-existent orbs. He looked up at Gaara with his eyebrows drawn together.
“What is it exactly?” Neji asked. He watched with fascination as his usually stoic boyfriend flushed and tried to hide his embarrassment. “Gaara, what is it?” he repeated his question.
“It’s a plane ticket. To the states. To live with Naruto, Sasuke, and their guardians.” The redhead blinked at his boyfriend, as if the answer were obvious. “We all chipped in. A lot. I really want you to come.”
“T-To live with you?” Neji asked, his eyes growing wide. He hastily ripped the envelope open and pulled out the red and blue plane ticket. His eyes were starting to burn.
“Well, it’s Naruto, Sasuke, their guardians, and me. They’ve got such a big house and…they, I, really want you to come with me.” Gaara took Neji’s hands in his own, his eyes silently pleading. He knew it wasn’t like him to be so…open…but Neji had a way with him. “You’re seventeen now, and your father can’t stop you so-“
“-Yes! Yes, yes, yes!” Neji threw his arms around Gaara’s shoulders and buried his face in the other boy’s shoulders. “Please…just take me away.”
Gaara was all too happy to oblige.
