Chapter 1
-------------------------------------------
“Did you hear…?”, Sasuke heard one of his classmates whisper behind him in class.
“Hear what?”, his friend asks.
“I heard the whole Uchiha clan was killed…”, the first boy replies.
“Yeah… My father told me…”
“I also heard that Sasuke's older brother is going to die soon, leaving him as the only survivor…”
“Really…?”, the second boy gasps.
Sasuke doesn't say a word, but his face displayed annoyance as he stands up and shuffles out of the classroom with the other students when the bell-rang ending the school-day for the Ninja-Academy.
Once he reaches the court-yard, he starts running towards the hospital with his backpack bouncing against his upper-thigh. Slowing down when he approaches the building, walking in through the door, down the hall, up the stairs, and into the I.C.U. Wing.
`Big Brother has been in a coma for over a week… I hope he gets better soon…', he thinks, with his eyes cast on the floor.
“Hurry Doctor!”, a nurse shouts from down the hall, “He's crashing!”
“Get a crash-cart!”, the doctor orders, running past Sasuke into one of the rooms.
`That was Itachi's room!', the boy mentally panics, dashing to the door and watches as the doctor and nurses remove the blankets that covered his body, revealing the bandages wrapping around his whole torso as they begin to perform chest-compressions.
“Big Brother!”, he screams, against the flat-line-tone on the heart-monitor.
----------------
An older Sasuke bolts upright in bed gasping for breath with sweat dripping off his chin.
`It was just a dream…', he mentally sighs, as he flops back onto his pillow.
“Sasuke-kun, it's time to get up or you'll be late!”, he heard a female's voice call from the other room.
He turns his head towards the closed-door and glares at it for a moment in annoyance, before sitting back up and scratches the back of his head, further intensifying his spiky bed-head.
Placing his feet onto the floor, he stands and tiredly stumbles towards the door, as he steps out into the hall he can smell the scent of pancakes and maple-syrup wafting from the kitchen and upon walking into the fore-mentioned room he is greeted with the sight of an older-version of Hisoka Kurosaki.
Her wheat-blonde hair had been grown-out to butt-length and was currently tied-back in a low-ponytail; she was wearing a red long-sleeve shirt with an ankle-length black-skirt underneath an apron as she slowly stirred a pot of stew with a gentle-smile on her face.
“Good morning, sleepy-head!”, she joyfully greets, as her green-eyes met his dark-grey ones.
“Morning…”, he grumbles, as he takes a seat at the table.
“Just because you woke up on the wrong side of bed this morning, doesn't mean you can try dragging others into your sulk”, she scolds, “Besides, today is the day of the Genin-exam at the Academy”, she adds, as she places a plate of pancakes in front of him, “So eat up so you can have the energy you need to pass”
“You're not my mother, so stop trying to act like one!”, he snaps, quickly standing up and dashing from the apartment, slamming the door behind him.
“What is wrong with him?”, she mutters, “I take time out of my morning-routine to make sure he has breakfast and is ready for class, and he treats me like I'm an inconvenience. Am I doing something wrong…?”
“It isn't anything you're doing”, she heard a smooth-baritone male's voice say from behind her, as a pair of strong; yet gentle, arms wrapped around her waist, “He's been like that ever-since the attack”
“Morning, Itachi”, she smiles, as she leans back into his embrace with her eyes closed, “Did you sleep well?”
“As well as someone can with all of the missions I've been assigned”, he bitterly replies, releasing his hold on her and takes a seat in Sasuke's empty-chair.
“You know, you really should decline some of those missions”
“You know that I can't, especially after the `incident that had almost happened', remember?”
“I remember, it's just working yourself to the bone isn't helping you be a big brother to Sasuke-kun”, she states, sitting next to him, “Maybe I can talk to…”
“Don't waste your breath, it's not like Danzou will listen to him anyway”, he advises, rubbing at the dark-bags under his eyes.
“It was just a thought…”
“I know you mean well, but there is no reasoning with that man”, he says, before starting to harshly cough.
“You have a mission tonight, correct?”, she asks, changing the subject.
“Yeah…”, he coughs.
“Then eat something and get some more sleep, it wouldn't be good if you collapsed during your mission”, she instructs, while weakly smiling.
“Yes, ma'am”, he mockingly salutes, before biting into a forkful of pancakes.
“Well, I have to be heading off now”, Hisoka says, as she stands up and heads towards the door while removing the apron, “I'll be back in the afternoon, and there is stew on the stove in case you get hungry before I get back”, she informs, “Ja'ne, Itachi”, she waves, as she closes the door behind her.
----------------
-A Few Minutes Later-
“Good Morning, Kurosaki-san”, an elderly man greets, he was wearing red & white robes.
“Good Morning, Hokage-sama”, she replies with a smile.
“What is on the schedule for today?”, he questions.
She picks up a clip-board, “Today is the graduation of the students at the academy, the assignment of missions, and a meeting with the Leader of the Grass-Village”, she informs.
“Thank you, Hisoka”, he responds.
“Would you like me to be there during the meeting?”
“I would like to say no, but tension is still high”
“Understood, sir”, she nods, checking her pouch to count her kunai.
“So, how are Sasuke and Itachi doing?”
“Uh…”, she murmurs, looking off to the side, “Sasuke-kun is doing well, but Itachi… He isn't sleeping well”
“He does take on too much work-load, perhaps I should talk to…”
“Please don't!”, she interrupts, “I had promised Itachi that I wasn't going to involve you. I shouldn't have said anything”
“It isn't your fault that you're worried for his well-being; considering how close the two of you are”, he says, gently holding her hands, “Danzou still hasn't realized that this is a time of peace. So, I'll try on my end to limit the amount of missions Itachi-san can go on, without letting him know that you voiced your concern about him”
“Thank you, sir”, she mutters, silently glad she had a compromise to her dilemma.
“Now we shouldn't keep the Grass-Village Leader waiting”, he states, walking ahead.
“R-right”, she stammers, briskly walking to catch up with him.
----------------
-That Afternoon-
“Well, that meeting was quite eventful!”, the Hokage; Sarutobi, laughs, as he steps into the hallway.
“The nerve of that guy!”, Hisoka angrily mutters, her face completely red from frustration, as she follows him out.
“But he is correct, you would make any guy lucky to be with you”
“That may be true, but he was saying in such a way that he was hitting on me!”, she exclaims, as her face turns an even darker-shade of red.
“Then don't pay him any mind, he just doesn't realize that your heart already belongs to another”, he chuckles, “Besides, isn't it around the time that the Academy is being let out?”
“Yes, it's about time for the students to be let out of class”, she replies, the reason for her to be flustered immediately forgotten.
“I should head over there to congratulate the ones that passed the exam”, he verbally notes to himself, “You have done an excellent job for today, so you should head on home”
“Actually, I'll walk you there. I have business to attend to at the Academy as well”
“Oh right, Sasuke-kun. In that case, I am honored to be your escort”
“Thank you, Hokage-sama. I accept”, she nods.
----------------
-At the Academy-
“Well, you're here”, she says.
“Thank you, the walk was pleasant”, he states.
“It was my pleasure”, she smiles, before turning her head to look for the familiar head of spiked black-hair among the crowd of students with their parents, “Where is he…?”, she whispers.
“Is something wrong, Hisoka-chan?”, she heard a male's voice ask, causing her to turn the voice to find a man of a few-years older than her with a scar across the bridge of his nose and his dark-brown hair was tied back in a high-ponytail, “What's the matter?”
“Have you seen Sasuke-kun, Iruka-san?”, she questions.
“Yeah, after the exam ended, he left. Would you like some help locating him?”
“No, it's alright. I have an idea of where he's vanished to”, she declines, “Thanks for the offer”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, he always goes there when he wants to be left alone”, she reassures.
“Hey, isn't he the kid who…?”, she heard a woman mutter to another.
“Yeah, that's him. The only one who failed”, the other mother whispers back, causing her to turns towards the boy they were speaking about.
She finds a young pre-teen male with short-spiky blonde-hair and sapphire-blue eyes wearing a two-piece orange & blue jump-suit sitting on a tree-swing staring at the ground, the look on his face and in his posture displaying his depression at not passing the exam.
`Naruto…', she thinks, recognizing the youth.
“Serves him right…”, the first mother sneers.
“Can you imagine if they let someone like that become a shinobi?!”, the second woman scoffs, “I mean, think about what HE is…!”
“Shh! We aren't supposed to talk about THAT!”, the first woman hushes.
Before Hisoka could even take one step towards him, she notices one of the Academy-teachers approach him and while she saw the man speak with Naruto, a chill ran up her spine.
`Something bad is about to happen…', she mentally says to herself, as Naruto and the teacher; Mizuki, walk away from the Academy.
