Everyday
The mindless garbled talk of the television
The noise of traffic and people outside
The ceaseless ringing of the phone
The letters, bills and adverts flooding through the door
The shrill scream of the alarm in the morning
The scattered useless everyday objects
The pointlessness of reality without him
Her finger pressed lightly on the button
Silencing the screaming alarm after another sleepless night
She sat up in bed, resting against the headboard
Dark circles rimmed her eyes showing many sleepless nights
Her hair hung unkempt and dirty around her sunken cheeks
Her face was dry and white
She padded across the rubble strewn floor
Her robe open and dragging items in her wake
The mewling of a snow white kitten reached her ears
She scooped the kitten up into her arms
Absent-mindedly stroking the soft kitten fur
She put the kitten onto her shoulder and filled the kettle
Her slim fingers measured out cat food and placed the kitten next to it
After making herself a cup of tea she sat
And stared at the wall
Her tea rested between her hands, forgotten
Once again the kitten's cry stirred her into action
She scooped the ball of fluff up once again
And returned to the sanctuary of their bedroom
She returned the kitten to its bed and left it washing its already sleek fur
She herself completed the ritual of washing
Her clothes were an indicator of her mood
The plain black clothes hugged her form comfortingly
She returned to their room and lay on the unmade bed
The kitten curled up by her side and purred reassuringly
They remained that way for hours listening to the world outside
Friends rang the doorbell and were promptly ignored
The phone rang incessantly until she pulled the plug
People shouted through her letterbox and left food
The kitten remained close to her, only leaving occasionally
Her eyes remained wide open and she simply stared
Then, towards the afternoon everything stopped
The door was left alone and the noise on the street died down
Hours later, a key turned in the lock
And the front door creaked open
Soft footsteps made their way down the cluttered corridor
The door to her bedroom swung open
And he stood there, filling the doorframe
She ran to him and flung her arms around him
“I'm home, Sakura.”
