Naruto Fan Fiction ❯ Fallen Shinobi ❯ Fallen Shinobi ( Chapter 1 )

do not own Naruto or the song Fallen Leaves they belong to their original creators. I make no money from this.
“In a crooked little town, they were lost and never foundFallen leaves, fallen leaves, fallen leaves... on the ground”
When I got back after two years of training with that pervy sage I had changed. Unfortunately I wasn’t the only one who had, but the only one who changed for the better. It seems Konaha had been like a poison to my first friends. When I got to Iruka sensei to go for our normal welcome home ramen he looked stricken. It was not long before I found out why.
“I hitched a ride, down to the coast”
Kakashi was gone. For now at least. It seems he had taken out an extended leave of absence with no time limit. He had jumped on the back of a traveling merchant’s wagon and offered free protection for a ride to wave country. He told everyone he had a personal mission there. Plus he had never had the chance to actually walk across the great Naruto bridge and it was named for one of his students.
“To leave behind, all of my ghosts”
Our team had figured out long ago the reason Kakashi sensei was really always late. No matter what elaborate excuse he came up with he was always late for the same reason. He spent his time at a special memorial that had the names of his team mates, as well as all other shinobi killed in action, scratched in. He spoke to them every day unless out on a mission.
“Searching for something, I couldn't find at home”
To me it was perfectly clear what Kakashi was doing. He was going to wave country to visit the graves of Zabuza and Haku. I guess for him it was easier to ask forgiveness from enemy shinobi than from the team members whose deaths you felt responsible for. Thinking back I guess I can understand at least a bit where he is coming from.
But what I was told about Lee was so much worse. It seemed that for some reason the Hokage was only having missions brought to her that absolutely required chakra.
“Can't get no job, can you spare a dime?”
He had been out of work for months, but under normal circumstances he would have been ok. Things haven’t been normal in Konaha for a while though. Lee had passed an alley one day where a man offered him a shot that would boost chakra. I guess I really shouldn’t be surprised Lee had always had a personality of an addict. I mean first there was his dream. Then came his rivals Nenji, Sasuke, and me. Finally, he was definitely addicted to Sakura.
“Just one more hit, and I'll be fine”
As we left the ramen stand I saw him on the street begging for money. It was the most pathetic sight I had ever seen. To think that someone so noble could be reduced to this after just one time.
“I swear to God, this'll be my one last time!”
Iruka ha found out about a month ago and Lee swore never to do it again. The poor boy just wasn’t able to keep his promise when everything was falling apart around him.
“In a crooked little town, they were lost and never found”
Chouji was missing in action.
“Fallen leaves, fallen leaves, fallen leaves... on the ground”
Ten ten had fallen in battle.
“Run away before you drown, or the streets will beat you down”
Shikamaru had left for sand country to be with Temari. Ino had sold a more precious flower than a rose, her own personal flower.
“Fallen leaves, fallen leaves, fallen leaves... on the ground”
Shino had completely cut himself off from everyone. Nobody had heard his voice in over a year.
“When it gets dark, in Pigeon Park”
My lovely Sakura had never gotten over Sasuke’s betrayal or my failure to keep my promise. Every night after I took my leave she went back to the bench where Sasuke had left her. At least she did.
“Voice in my head, will soon be fed”
Sometimes she would get so distracted that I thought she had split personalities. You know sort of like a person inside her head arguing with her. I used to consider it a stupid thought but now I wasn’t so sure. Iruka said he had seen her there a few times and she always had the facial expressions as if she was in a battle with herself. I guess the inner voice finally won.
“By the vultures, that circle round the dead!”
By pure unfortunate circumstances it was Lee who found her the morning after the voice had won. Her blood was pooled under the bench and that was the day he went back on his promise to Iruka.
“In a crooked little town, they were lost and never foundFallen leaves, fallen leaves, fallen leaves... on the ground”
Hinata was married off by her father. A loveless arranged marriage where the man she was with was ten years older than her. Hinata was no longer allowed to be a shinobi. She was hidden away in a mansion and only allowed out once a month if that for shopping. Last time Iruka had seen her she looked seven to eight months pregnant and very unhappy.
“Run away before you drown, or the streets will beat you downFallen leaves, fallen leaves, fallen leaves... on the ground”
Kiba who had truly loved her started running that day. As far as anyone knew he had never quit running. Mission after mission never stopping for a break. I guess he was trying to escape the pain, but I knew he never would. Nenji had never forgiven himself for not protecting Hinata from her fate.
Then there was my eternal rival and my brother if not my friend. Sasuke had been caught.
“I never once thought, I'd ever be caught!Staring at sidewalks, hiding my track marks!”
He had led everyone on a good chase that was for sure, but even though nobody could find a single trace of Sasuke they ended up stumbling over him on a mission. I went to visit him and that’s why I was here now sitting on the top of the fourth’s head. Sasuke, it had been determined, could not be helped. He would be put to death in the morning. There was nothing I could do to help any of them and it broke my heart. I had left my friends and allowed this to happen. To be truthful though they pulled away from me first. I just didn’t give them the choice to come running back when they needed me this time.
“I left my best friends, or did they just leave me?
