He watched her dance sometimes. She wore a thin, nearly transparently white dress that fell to mid-thigh and her pink hair used to swing gently with the momentum of her motions.

 

She would lift a delicately curved foot, and pirouette, arms gracefully held above her head. And then, unexpectedly, she would leap, like a deer.

 

Bathed in the forgiving moonlight, he could not see the battle scars, the heavily calloused fingers, the bruises and half-healed cuts.

 

If he had believed in fairies, he would have sworn she was one.

 

But the fey don't die.
