Summary: It had been years since she had a calm lifestyle, and Kurai isn't really looking forward to it. The strange dreams have been bugging her again, and what is it exactly the Hokage wants her to do?

Funiku: An Important Mission

His breathing became heavier with each moment that passed. You could his exasperated pants as the enemy drew near. Iruka knew he didn't have much time left before he was found out. How did he get himself into these messes? If only he had listened to sensei's instructions…

The shadow came closer and felt the presence of a foe, her grip on the kunai tightening. So it is that a shinobi must always be on her guard. She could hear the enemy's panicking heartbeat and the ragged, irregular rhythm of his breath. The young kunoichi sought after the source of the noise. It seemed to becoming from a tree that was not even 50 meters away from the cliff where she stood.

“Come out, and you may be spared.” Were the words that were uttered from her mouth.

Iruka's heart froze up, and he realized that he'd been found. There was no other choice as he slowly crept out and peaked at this new adversary. There before him stood young girl, no older than himself. The female shinobi had a grim look about her face as her lips were drawn into a thin, hard line. Her eyes were cold and uncaring, the murderous intent obvious in her solemn glare. A the sight of Iruka's shivering fear, her features softened just a bit. A shadow of a smile could be seen upon her face.

“Oh, Iruka. I've looking for you,” she said, “Where have you been?”

Iruka was mildly surprised and quickly tried to hide it. So it was not an enemy ninja after all, just his fellow teammate. He was gladly relieved at the sight, but he still didn't let his guard down. For all he knew, it could perhaps be some sort of henge technique or a shadow clone.

“How can I be sure that it's actually Kurai that I'm speaking to?” he asked, just to check.

The kunoichi replied in a mocking tone, “That sounds so funny coming from you, Iruka. I thought you would know your own comrade better than that.”

“Geez, that's Kurai for you,” Iruka thought. She was the only person he knew who would come up with a remark life that in a possibly threatening situation. Sadly, he swore that she could ridicule even death's very face.

“Alright, so it is you. I got it already.” He replied in a very matter-of-fact voice.

The girl looked like she was about to laugh but held the forbidden emotion back. Her face returned to the same glare from before. Business was urgent after all. There were still many things to be done.

“We've had enough of our fun, Iruka. Now where is he?”

Iruka pointed to his right, and using the data he had gathered from the scouting mission, said, “It appears to be that he's being held captive near the caves, and he's heavily guarded. I'm not sure if we can take them all at once.”

With her usual blunt expression, she retorted, “A mission is a mission. Every one that is handed to us must be completed at all risks. No matter how many people there are, we have to take it on for the sake of that mission. Even if sacrifices must be made….”

Kurai could tell from the fearful glint in his eyes that he was not looking forward to it. Since they had recently reached Chuunin level, Iruka had not liked the more difficult missions. Everything was much more dangerous now, and they had to be on their guard. A slow smirk crossed her face.

Unlike Iruka, she looked forward to it. Unknown to all those close to her, she actually enjoyed that sort of danger. The anticipation, the fighting, and even the pain- she took pleasure in them all. What she loved the most though, was the bloodlust that overcame her every time she fought.

Iruka gazed over at Kurai as she cut off. Her eyes were glazed over, and he could see that she was lost in thought. Even though he hated to say it, there was no time to waste. Iruka yelled at Kurai and got her out of the trance. She jumped down and ran over to his side.

“Thanks, Iruka. I suppose that I just got carried away in the moment.”

He said, “Well it's nice to hear that at least one of us is excited. I am so not looking forward to this.”

Kurai chuckled at this, for she knew her teammate so well. “We should go now. I don't think we have much time left before they try to interrogate him.”

Her fellow shinobi nodded, and they shot off in the right direction.

“Oh, god…not that dream again.”

The adult leaned up out of bed just enough to prop her head on her right hand. She thought on what had just happened and wondered why they had. These dreams had been happening for a while now. How long had it been? Almost eight months to be exact. Every night, every time she went to bed, the dreams would come. They confused her and brought back painful memories from her childhood.

She sat up more so that now both hands were supporting her head. Kurai took a quick look at her surroundings.

The room she was in was in was small, but big enough so that one wouldn't feel cramped or trapped inside of it. All of the walls were painted in a different tone of gray, as if to show various stages of emotion. They were bare except for a window with hanging panels that took up most of that side. On the opposite wall, hung a painting of a peaceful meadow with a herd of horses calmly grazing. But in the background an angry, smoldering volcano stood, ready to erupt at any moment.

The bed was nearly the opposite of the dull walls, with elaborate patterns in crimson and teal scrolled across the coverlet. Next to it rested a nightstand with an assortment of papers and photographs upon it. The vanity by that was also littered and unorganized. On top of the disarray of papers and forms were a sketchbook and numerous grades of pencils. There was also a shelf by the window practically chockfull of scrolls and books.

She glanced over at her alarm clock to find that it read 6:45 A.M. Something clicked in her head, and she realized that if she didn't get her but up and moving, she would miss a seriously important meeting.

“Damn it, I overslept! I blame those dreams.” Kurai exclaimed as she quickly leaped out of bed and gathered the things she would need for the day.

Kurai rushed over to the Hokage's office. If she hurried, she just might make it in time. The door's flew open, while Kurai sped into it. Just in time she thought, as she entered into the infamous room. Hokage-sama sat in his desk and was busy working on some papers. She took in her surroundings and noticed that nobody was there. Did she get the time wrong or something? Tapping her foot impatiently, Kurai waited for Sandaime to notice her.

About five minutes had passed until finally the Hokage lifted his head up and made actual eye contact with her.

“Ah, so nice to see you as always Kurai. Although, you are aware that the meeting doesn't start for another hour, right?” he said, smiling all along.

Kurai was stumped. What in the world had happened? She was usually accurate with the time. It was one of her biggest pet peeves if anything, even just the tiniest little difference, did not go according to plan.

“Hokage-sama, I'm so sorry. I was not aware of the time. I really have no idea of what happened.” She replied.

“Don't worry. You just probably got all the memos mixed up. It's nothing to fret over; things like this happen to the best of us,” he said, still grinning, “You have been working yourself quite hard lately, so it's no wonder why you had this little mishap.”

“Yes, Hokage-sama.” Was all that she said, as she was highly embarrassed.

She seated herself on one of the sofas and took a well deserved breath. Hokage-sama was right. Things had been extremely chaotic for her these past weeks. She hated this new position so much. Before she had accepted the job, she had spent most of her time on missions. Usually, the missions were so long that she wouldn't be in Konoha for months at a time. That was the reason why she was so little known among all the other shinobi. And when she had gotten back to her house, everything was covered in a layer of dust. It was than only a matter of time before she was shipped out to another deadly mission.

This was the way it had been for six years now, ever since she had reached Jounin at the age of seventeen. Things were the way she like it, and Kurai hated change. So, you could easily imagine how much her world was rocked when she discovered that she would be transferred to a different status. Of all the people to choose from, she had been the one chosen to lead a three-man cell of Genin. As if things couldn't get worse enough, there were all the files and forms that had to be filled out along with the annoying brood that she was to call her students.

Kurai was awoken out of her stupor when the Hokage called her name. “While we wait for the others to arrive Kurai, there are some personal matters I would like to discuss with you.

“Oh, what is it Hogake-sama?”

“As you know, you've been transplanted into a very different lifestyle than the one before. I'm quite aware of the difficulties that you're having adjusting to this new routine. Therefore, I'm also offering you an opportunity that I think you will enjoy.”

Kurai's ears perked up at the sound. Did he say something that I might enjoy?

The Jounin immediately came closer, and stood before the Hokage's desk. She was greatly anxious to find out just what this “opportunity” was.

He continued on, “As you may know, we have been having some difficulties with the Stone, Grass, and Rain villages. Our connections with them are wavering, and there have even been some reports of violence between our borders.”

“I need somebody who can take care of this without causing a ruckus, somebody to…how should I put this? Oh yes, keep an eye on them. Your little ability will come in very hand here. I sure that you have just been itching to try it out.”

Kurai focused even more into Hokage-sama's words. Was he actually speaking about what she thought he was. If he was indeed doing just that, she could not wait.

Alright, sorry about the short first chapter. Nothing really happened. Things will get better later own, so you don't have to worry about that. Hope you enjoyed the story anyways, see ya!
