Yes, this is a Neji/Tenten fanfiction. I'm not very good at romance stories, so please no flames! This was a suggestion from Ruth, an anonymous viewer. So I dedicate this story to her!

If I Said I Loved You

 

Neji was doing his normal training routines in the forest with Tenten. He was used to her presence now, after all the times she had helped him. He enjoyed being around her, she was a hard worker and a fun person to be around. They got along very well. He considered her one of his best friends.

However, things had been quite awkward between them as of late. Lately, Tenten seemed to be getting very nervous around him. She couldn't concentrate on helping him train, and she messed up quite miserably. Her nervousness was bothering Neji; A LOT. When she was nervous, it made him nervous. She had no reason to be nervous around him, so he was determined to figure out what was bothering his friend so.

“Tenten,” he called to her. She stumbled to her feet quickly.

“H-hai?” she answered. “What is it, Neji?”

“Tenten, is something wrong?” he asked. “You seem very nervous lately.” She blushed as he approached her.

“Ie, nothing is wrong. I just…have had things on my mind lately.” Neji raised an eyebrow.

“Is that so?” He stepped closer to her. “Like what things?” Her blush deepened. He's so close…not even a foot away…She backed up a little.

“Oh, you know. Missions and things like that…” Tenten replied nervously. He stepped even closer to her, causing her to take a few more steps back.

“Really?” He breathed. The more she stepped away, the closer he stepped to her. What am I doing? He asked himself. What is this feeling…I've never felt it before…Tenten took another step back as he got closer, but felt rough bark touch her back. She was at a dead end. Neji took this to his advantage.

To make sure she couldn't run away, he placed both hands on either side of the tree. He got closer until they were almost face to face. He could see the heat running to her face, but that only encouraged him. “Neji…what are you doing?” she asked quietly. What…what's he doing to do…Is he going to…kiss me?

He studied her face for a moment. “I…I don't know myself…,” he answered back just as quietly. “Tenten…may I ask you a question?” She looked surprised, but nodded her head yes. He bent in close to her ear and whispered, “If I said I loved you, then what would you do?”

Her expression was unreadable. It was a mixture of shock, happiness, and relief. “I…I would say that…I love you too. I always have. And…I would also do this.” Gently taking his face in her hands, she pulled his face close to hers. Neji's eyed widened when her lips met his. This shock however, was soon replaced by joy. He returned the kiss, and after a few moments they broke apart and both blushed.

Neither of them knew what to say. “Umm…Neji?” Tenten broke the silence. “Will you…walk me home please?” He nodded, still blushing slightly. They walked hand in hand, and head on shoulder. Neji then remembered the main purpose of how this had happened.

“Tenten, can you tell me what is bothering you now?” he asked the girl leaning on his shoulder.

“Nothing's wrong now, you fixed it.”

“How did I fix it?” Neji looked completely confused. She giggled, and squeezed his hand tighter.

“Oh, never mind! C'mon!” They both knew, as Tenten pulled Neji along hand in hand, that this was a day that they would cherish forever.
