Naruto Fan Fiction ❯ Innocent ❯ Innocent ( One-Shot )

[ A - All Readers ]

My beta reader ran off and joined the circus, or so I'm led to believe by the emptiness in my inbox. Any and all mistakes are my own and I'm terribly sorry but human err cannot be helped. Make of it what you will, it's just a drabble really. It was screaming at me to release it, so I have.

Disclaimer: I only own what is in my purse and that's a months worth of make-up, a pencil, a bottle of wal-mart brand perfume and my wallet; which is bare, scarily so.

When Zabusa had said, “You will serve me in all things.” They both knew there were limitations. He wanted a weapon that most shinobi didn't have, a blood-line limit. That was all he was and supposed to be, a tool. Haku likes to think its love that pushes them together but knows its neither love nor lust. He's not sure what does keep them coming to each other, but he knows why it started.

You're so innocent Haku, he'd say. So naïve and gullible. Haku would smile because Zabuza gave him a purpose, so there really wasn't any need to mention the ache in his chest he knew wasn't physical. He was innocent, but in a way he thought, so was Zabuza. He always watched him, he never stopped really, but he saw the flicker every time Haku looked him in the eyes. For years he hoped it was some sort of repressed affection for the boy he'd saved, no one could be that distant could they? Yes, they could.

Zabuza was a hard man, a rough man. Sometimes he'd hug Haku in the awkward masculine one-armed hug that he always twitched when doing. Sometimes, he'd embrace Haku, much later after there first meeting, but always fast and rough. It was never long enough to satisfy the need for physical contact he'd grown and neglected. Sometimes Zabuza would look at Haku, and for a moment, he'd feel safe again, the only other time was long ago and so vague he hardly remembers what safe really is. Haku likes to think a lot of things that aren't true, but he never says.

Maybe one day, they could have made it something more. Probably not, but Haku likes to dream, late at night when he knows Zabuza is no longer watching. He knows he's a tool and for now that's enough, but another day goes by and he feels another crack in his chest that he knows isn't physical. What's that look that Zabuza flashes him when he thinks he isn't watching? Not love nor lust he's sure. But he likes to think so.

You're so innocent Haku.

He smiles outwardly at his mentor, but inside the ache grows stronger and he wonders why.
