Chapter Five: Therapy

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"...so...you like to start fires?"

Naruto nodded, and chewed the mint gum in his mouth. He was really trying to cut back on the cigarettes. "Yeah." He said, answering the question asked by Neji, who was calm, and obviously on his meds, thank goodness. They were playing chess; Naruto was loosing.

"Why?" the pale eyed boy asked, eyeing Naruto suspiciously. The blonde chuckled lightly, while moving a pawn. Neji seemingly analyzed his move.

"Dunno...I just like fire." He stated, keeping it short, not wanting to have to explain himself, and his real reasons.

The long haired boy stared at the chessboard intently. He made a move, which weakened Naruto's side of the game even more. The blonde knew he was going to lose soon; he was never really good at this game anyway. "It's dangerous, you know, starting fires. You could get yourself killed."

"I know that." Naruto attempted to make another move. All this talking was breaking his concentration. "Why are you here?" he asked, while he watched Neji play.

He made his next move, as his pale eyes darted up at Naruto momentarily. "Bipolarity, Post traumatic stress disorder, Panic disorder." He stated. Naruto couldn't help but to think that Neji sounded like a broken record, like he had repeated that same sentence over and over again once before...The blonde stared down at the board, and he noticed...that he'd just lost. Neji looked up at him indifferently. "You played a good game."

Naruto grinned lopsidedly. "Thanks, even though you totally kicked my ass." He laughed. He watched as Neji began to rearrange the pieces on the board, setting them back into their original spaces so that they could start a new game. As he reorganized the pawns, Naruto began to glance around the large room. There weren't many people in here right now; Naruto wondered where they all had gone. The only people here were Gaara, Kiba, Sakura and Hinata, Neji's cousin. The girl was just as silent as ever; she was the only one not watching television, she just stared out of the barred window, not even blinking.

The boy turned back to Neji, with whom he was supposed to be starting a game. "...hey, uh, Neji. If you don't mind me asking...what's wrong with your cousin?" he asked in a low voice, because one, he didn't want her to hear him, and two, he didn't want to be so loud as to risk Neji completely flipping out. The pale eyed boy looked up, and for several moments, he just stared at Naruto. It wasn't a normal stare, either; it was as if the boy were looking straight into his soul, or better yet, straight through him.

"She's mute." He stated, not saying anything else. Naruto resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Of course she was mute; anyone could've figured that out. What Naruto had really wanted to know, was what had caused her to be that way. And being mute wasn't the only reason she was here, there were mute people out in the world, and not cooped up in here. There had to be something else wrong with her, or else she simply wouldn't have been there. But, Naruto chose not to ask any other questions, in fear that it would trigger something, and make Neji angry.

Rule number one: Never make a lunatic upset. You will regret it.

"How long are you supposed to be staying here?" Neji asked him, as they started the game. He'd already moved a chess piece.

Naruto sighed while trying to choose the piece he was going to move. "Uh, just a year." He said, before moving a pawn. "This place isn't so bad...though, it reminds me of jail..."

"Is that where you would've gone, if you'd not have come here?" the long haired boy asked. Naruto only nodded, and then, Neji smirked. "If I were you, I would've gone to jail."

The blonde raised an eyebrow. "...What's that supposed to mean?-"

"-Uzumaki, Naruto." the sound of his name was followed by the sound of shoes padding across the tiled floor. Naruto looked to the right, only to see Shizune standing a few feet away from him. She clutched her clipboard to her chest "You have an appointment with Kakashi."

Naruto nodded, and looked to Neji. "Can we finish this later?" he questioned. The boy didn't speak, he only nodded and Naruto took that as a yes. He stood up from the chair, and then walked over to Shizune. The woman motioned for him to follow her as she started walking away.

"I wonder what this Kakashi person is like..." Naruto thought to himself as they walked through the building. He couldn't picture the man at all, he had no idea what he would look like. Maybe he'd be a middle-aged bald, fat guy with glasses...Naruto wouldn't know until he got there.

As they continued to walk, Naruto realized that they had left his ward completely, and entered another one. But, he soon realized that nothing had changed; they looked exactly the same. White walls, white and grey tile, and white doors. Everything looked absolutely sterile. Even germs would be afraid to come near this place.

Shizune led Naruto to the end of the other side of the building. To have two different wards, this place had to be pretty huge, considering the size of each sector And, not-so-surprisingly, the door that led to Kakashi's office was the only one with color; an old, oak door. Shizune opened the door, and motioned for Naruto to walk in. At first, he hesitated, not really wanting to enter this room. But he heard Shizune clear her throat, a signal for him to keep it moving. Naruto had no intention of making her angry, so he just took a breath, and walked inside.

Naruto was surprised to see that Kakashi's room was slightly larger than Tsunade's. Although he had just as much stuff as she did, he had more space, and Naruto could actually breathe, and not feel trapped in this room.

After observing the room, the blonde glanced over to the desk, where Kakashi sat. The man was nothing Naruto could've ever imagined. He was young, maybe only in his late twenties. Though, he had weird hair, that was grey-almost white, and he wore a mask that covered more than half of his face. Naruto raised an eyebrow at the strange man...was this really his therapist? This funny looking guy??

"Please have a seat, Uzumaki-kun." The man offered, motioning towards the long couch that was on Naruto's left, near the wall in this office. Naruto was shocked to see that there were no bars, or wire, on the window in this room. Then again, Kakashi wasn't going to try and escape; if he didn't want to be here he could just quit. When Naruto walked towards the couch to sit down, he heard Shizune slam the door shut. Naruto was getting the feeling that he wasn't going anywhere, anytime soon. He sat down on the couch, but didn't lie back...it would make him feel like he was really, insane.

"So, tell me how your stay is going; do you enjoy it here?" Kakashi asked, as he pulled out a clipboard, and a pencil. Naruto silently eyed the man suspiciously.

"...no, I don't enjoy it here. Why would I? Everyone's completely insane." The blonde said in an overly snippy tone.

The white haired man scribbled something down onto the clipboard, and then glanced towards Naruto. "Completely insane...an interesting choice of words. Naruto, how does it make you feel, to be here?" he asked. Naruto crossed his arms over his chest.

"I feel...It feels like jail." He stated, not changing the expression on his face even once. Kakashi wrote something more onto his clipboard.

"Let's talk about your living arrangements, tell me about your roommate, do you two get along?" he questioned

Naruto raised an eyebrow; he didn't like this one bit. "My roommate is narcoleptic. He doesn't say much. We get along fine." Again, the man wrote something down. Naruto was growing quite tired of that; it didn't feel right, having Kakashi writing things about him. Naruto sighed heavily. "Oi, how long is this going to take?" he asked. Kakashi looked up at him, and beneath his mask, the man smiled.

"Don't worry about that, Uzumaki-kun; we've got all the time in the world."

...Naruto did not like the way that sounded.

For the next half hour, Kakashi asked a series of questions, most of them containing the phrase "How did that make you feel?" He started off by asking about Naruto's opinion on each of the patients here. The blonde did not give detailed explanations, because quite frankly, he didn't feel comfortable telling this man anything. He'd just met him today, and there was no way that he would tell him what was going on in his head.

Kakashi asked Naruto about why he thought he was here. Naruto thought that question was downright stupid. He knew exactly why he was here; he's set half a forest aflame, he was a pyromaniac. Duh.

The white haired man wanted to know if Naruto really thought he deserved to be there. That had been the only question Naruto found difficult to answer; he knew there was something wrong with him, and yet, he refused to believe that he was completely insane like the rest of the people here. And Kakashi, noticing Naruto's hesitation with an answer, wrote something down on that godforsaken clip board. Naruto was curious to see what exactly he'd written about him.

None of the questions that Kakashi asked had been too deep; they'd all just barely scratched the surface of Naruto's reasons for being here. The boy figured that since this was only his first visit, they would just talk about miniscule, irrelevant things. Though, he wondered just how far into his personal life Kakashi would dig. If he went too far...he would not like the knowledge he would attain.

Once their session was finished, Kakashi handed Naruto a small slip of paper. When he looked at it, he noticed a bunch of long words he couldn't pronounce, and Kakashi's signature at the bottom. Though, glancing over it again, there was one word that he did recognize; Valium. Of course, he would prescribe more medication.

Naruto wasted no time vacating Kakashi's office. Though, as soon as he opened the door, he saw Shizune walking down the hallway towards the room. Walking beside her was the quiet girl, Hinata. Her head hung low, and her hands were covering her mouth. When she noticed Naruto standing outside the door, she glanced up at him nervously, her eyes darting around nervously. If he didn't know any better, he'd say that she seemed...frightened.

The boy sighed heavily, and began to walk straight down the hallway. He remembered the way back to his ward, so he didn't need Shizune to escort him. Besides, he didn't want to be anywhere near that woman; she was scary.

He continued to stare at the piece of paper in his hand. Naruto could count three names of medications he couldn't pronounce, and he wondered what exactly they were for. He'd only talked to Kakashi for about half an hour; how had the man diagnosed him in such a short time? And had the small amount of things Naruto had said to him indicated some type of mental illness, other than pyromania?

This was all too stressful and confusing to Naruto, and he didn't want to spend too much time thinking on it. He would just leave the prescription in the tray at Shizune's office, and she would of course fill it for him. It wasn't as if he would take the medication anyway; Naruto had no intention of turning into someone who relied on pills and capsules to control his way of living.

Upon entering his ward again, Naruto saw that more people had migrated into the TV room. Most of them were either watching the news, or sitting silently. He made his way over to Shizune's small office, and left his prescription inside the tray on the outside of the window to her office. Then, he walked over to the couch near the window, and took a seat. He saw that Sakura was watching him, while she tapped her cigarette against the small ashtray on the table.

"Hey blondie, did you finally talk to Kakashi today?" she asked him. Naruto nodded his head, and sighed as he leaned back.

"I don't see how it's supposed to help..." he mumbled, though she heard him nevertheless.

Sakura scoffed, while taking a drag from her cigarette and smirking. "You lie down, you confess your secrets, and you're cured...or at least that's what they want you to believe." The girl said to him. Naruto gave her an odd look, before he shook his head and leaned back into the couch. Sakura must've noticed Naruto's strained demeanor, when she laughed, and smiled at him. "Don't worry kid; your first session is always awkward. You'll get used to it." She told him.

Naruto only shrugged his shoulders, and sighed once more. The truth was; he did not want to get used to it. He didn't want to talk to a therapist, he didn't want to be in a mental hospital, he didn't want to be surrounded by crazies; and yet he was. Life's a bitch, yeah? The boy silently prayed that his year-long stay here would go quickly. He'd be turning twenty years old this year, and he absolutely didn't want to spend his twentieth birthday here.

The blonde shook his head, before slowly dragging his hand over his face "...maybe I can get out for good behavior..." he thought, right before nearly slapping himself in the face. Good behavior? Right, sure. Naruto continued to shake his head.

His eyes darted around the slightly empty room, and he sighed, right before he stood up. The boy decided to go and take a shower, because he needed something to momentarily take his mind off of all these things. So, he got up from the couch, and walked clear out of the room.

First, he went to his room to grab a change of clothes, and the key to the bathroom. Of course, Shikamaru was in the room, fast asleep as usual. Naruto understood that he was narcoleptic, but sometimes he wondered if he just slept too much. Naruto gathered his things, and the key, and quickly left the room. On his way to the bathrooms, Naruto sighed and lowered his head, starting to stare at the ground. He was sincerely hoping that this shower would help clear his mind, because he really needed it. He'd been thinking hard lately, and Uzumaki Naruto does not think hard; not ever.

"...yep, that's what I need, a nice, warm shower. And you know what else? A bowl of ramen. Jeez, where do they keep the damn ra-" Naruto's thoughts were cut short when he ran into something...or should I say, someone. He stumbled backward, and almost lost everything he'd held in his arms. And when he looked up...well...he wished that he hadn't.

Standing before him was none other than the bastard of all bastards himself; Sasuke. Naruto couldn't help it when his eyes started getting very big; The raven was wearing virtually nothing; the only thing that kept him from nudity was the white towel that was wrapped around his waist. It was evident that he had just gotten out of the shower, because there were water droplets sliding down his skin. If Naruto didn't have any self control, his face would've been about as red as a ripe tomato.

"Uh, my bad." He muttered as he averted his eyes. And even though he wasn't looking at him, Naruto could tell that there was a smirk on Sasuke's face.

"You should watch where you're going next time." He told him, and with that said, the boy began to walk away.

Naruto took a deep breath, and kept his composure while walking to the bathroom. He unlocked the door, walked in, dropped his clothes and turned on the shower. Naruto made sure that the water temperature was very, very cold.
