Chapter fifteen: It Is True What They Say

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"It's so easy, to think about Love, to talk about Love, to wish for Love. But it's not always easy to recognize Love, even when we hold it our hands."
-Jaka

Naruto sat on Shikamaru's bed, twiddling his thumbs idly as his roommate showed him an array of old photos. There were numerous people in the pictures that Naruto didn't know, and with every different picture, there were different people. Naruto was told that at the end of each year, a group photo was taken- Shikamaru had seven of them. He was showing him a picture from the year before Naruto had arrived. All of the people Naruto knew now were in it, plus two people he did not recognize.

"Who're these two?" Naruto asked, pointing to the two faces.

Shikamaru pointed to the male on the left. He had shoulder length silver hair, a wide smile, and abnormally sharp teeth. "That's Suigetsu." Shikamaru told him. "He stayed for about a year and a half." The brunet glanced at Naruto and snickered under his breath. Naruto gave him a curious look.

"What's so funny?" Naruto questioned.

His roommate's finger lingered on Suigetsu's face. "He was fond of Uchiha as well...but Sasuke never gave him the time of day." Shikamaru looked over to Naruto. "It's different for you, I've noticed."

Naruto could feel his neck burning- he was blushing and he knew it. But instead of acknowledging his own embarrassment, he pointed to the other unknown person in the picture. "And who's this girl?" When Naruto asked Shikamaru about that girl, he could swear that he saw some flicker of emotion behind the man's eye. A ghost of a smile lingered on his lips and he pointed to the smiling girl in the photo.

"She's Ino." He told Naruto. "She and Sakura are good friends, but Ino got better a few months ago and left." Shikamaru yawned and rubbed the back of his head. "Sakura's still a little unhappy about the fact that she left."

A light smirk crossed Naruto's mouth. "Aren't you, too?" the blond asked. Shikamaru tried to hide his surprised expression, but Naruto patted him on the shoulder and chuckled. "Ha, now that my relationships are all out on the table, how bout we shed some light on yours too, yeah?" he teased. "She's really pretty, y'know. I remember you telling me once that you'd used to like her. I think you still do."

Shikamaru shrugged his shoulders lazily. "She calls, visits Sakura sometimes-"

"-She doesn't visit you??" Naruto cut him off. "But weren't you guys together or something?" the blond questioned. Again, Shikamaru yawned carelessly.

"We were never together. She liked me, I liked her, and that was it." Shikamaru flipped the page in his album to a different picture. "I don't really want to see her anymore."

Naruto was a little taken aback at his friend's statement. "What? Why??" he asked, staring at Shikamaru intently.

Shikamaru took a deep breath and scratched the top of his head, obviously annoyed. "She's cured, Naruto. She's healthy. She doesn't belong here anymore and I do. I don't want her to have to put up with this place, or with me. The less memories of this place she has, the better." He shrugged. "It's all too troublesome if you ask me." Shikamaru told Naruto.

The blonde boy crossed his arms over his chest. "Oh don't give me that crap, Shikamaru. If you really wanted to leave this place, you could. You're not even crazy!-"

"-Not everyone staying in this hospital is crazy, Naruto." Shikamaru corrected him. "It's not just a place for people who're mentally unstable- it's also for people who just need a rest- people who need a break from the outside world." Shikamaru sighed and snapped his photo album closed. "This is such a drag- I should just leave the past behind me." He spoke, while rubbing his temples as if he had a headache. Naruto only continued to stare at him.

"So, you really like her then." He persisted. Shikamaru looked over at his roommate with a bored, tired expression on his face.

"And you really like Sasuke, do you?" he asked, raising an eyebrow curiously.

It was Naruto's turn to shrug his shoulders. "You want the truth?" he questioned, whilst a steady smile was spreading across his face. "Yeah, I do. Don't ask me why, 'cause I don't know what it is about that bastard that I like. I just do." Naruto glanced at Shikamaru, grinning. "See? It's not that hard to say what you really feel."
"Sorry, I'm not like you Uzumaki." Shikamaru began to return his photo album into his desk drawer. "I don't wear my heart on my sleeve."

Suddenly, there was a knock at their door. Before either of them could ask who it was, the door opened and Haku stepped into the room. The feminine boy had an amused smirk on his face. "You wouldn't guess what's happening." He said, mostly directing his words to Shikamaru. The brunet shrugged.

"Nope, I wouldn't. So tell me."

Haku kept grinning. "Kurenai must be looking for a death wish or something because she's taken the group therapy job." He confessed. "Shika, I know you remember what happened to the last guy who proctored group therapy."

"Yeah, I remember." Shikamaru agreed. "We haven't done group therapy in months-"

"-how come?" Naruto interjected.

Both Shikamaru and Haku's eyes landed on him. "No one told you?" Haku asked. Naruto shook his head. "Hayate, the last guy who worked group therapy, had a little mishap during the session. He made the mistake of pushing Gaara's buttons, and ever since then, well" Haku gulped. "...he's had this persistent cough. But that's all I can really say; we're not supposed to talk about that anymore." He finished. After hearing that, Naruto didn't even want to know the truth about what Gaara had done.

"So when's this group therapy thing supposed to be happening?" Naruto asked.

"Right now," Haku answered him. "That's what I came to get you guys for." The long haired boy watched as both Shikamaru and Naruto rose from their seats. When they walked out into the hallway with him, he spoke to Naruto. "I hope you're good at dodging flying objects."

"What? What's that supposed to mean??"

Haku ignored Naruto's question and started strolling down the hallway with his hands in his pockets. The blonde sighed and dropped his head- his questions were always left unanswered.

Together, he and Shikamaru followed Haku to a room that Naruto had never been in before. It was large, open, and there were plastic white chairs arranged in a circle in the middle of the room. Kurenai was seated in one of the chairs, as were the patients. Naruto chose an empty seat between Hinata and Gaara. When Hinata saw him sit down next to her, the left corner of her mouth twitched, yet she did not smile. Instead, Naruto smiled at her. When he did this, she promptly hid her mouth behind her hands.

"Good afternoon everyone," Kurenai greeted them all with a warm smile. "Now, as you all know, group therapy was canceled a few months ago for...numerous reasons." She began "But, I have taken on the job because I honestly think that this will be something that could help you all. None of you can overcome your problems alone, and you should all be there for one another. That is the sole basis of group therapy- being there for one another."

Everyone remained silent, their eyes still on Kurenai. The woman laced her fingers together in her lap and spoke again. "Well now, here's what today's session will be all about." She pointed to the dry erase board behind her. On the board, the words "Sadness vs. Happiness" were written in blue marker. "Today, I would like it if everyone could tell me one thing that makes them sad, one thing that makes them happy, and why. If you don't wish to share, just say 'pass'." Kurenai's eyes roamed over the circle of patients. "You all know the rules of group therapy. You are all allowed to make comments on something that the speaker shares, but don't intentionally say something that will hurt them. And also," the woman's eyes immediately flickered over to Gaara. "Please keep your hands, and all other objects, to yourself."

The woman motioned to her left where Sakura was seated. "Sakura, why don't you start us off?" she suggested. "Tell us one thing that makes you unhappy, and then one thing that makes you happy."

Sakura, who was biting her nails insistently, only nodded her head and sighed. Her green eyes wandered around the circle, surveying each and every person. It wasn't hard to see that she didn't want to share her feelings with any of them, but she was too proud to chicken out and pass. "One thing that makes me unhappy is my weight." She began, "I'll never be as small as I want to be."

"How small do you want to be?" Haku asked. He was seated next to Shikamaru, who was next to Sakura.

The pink haired girl shot Haku a dirty look before speaking. "Seventy pounds." She answered, in a voice that almost made her seem proud of what she was saying. Haku said nothing more after this and Sakura continued. "And one thing that makes me happy is...when people accept my choices, when I'm not judged. I've been judged my whole life; I'm quite tired of it." She finished, crossing her arms over her chest and leaning back in her chair.

Next was Shikamaru. The lazy boy yawned and scratched the back of his head. "Oh, I dunno," he started "Troublesome things make me upset...like when I fall asleep in the middle of cloud watching." He shrugged his shoulders. "I'm a pretty content person, I guess." And with that, he was done. The next person to speak was Haku. The boy clasped his laced fingers atop his knee and sighed.
"Well, let's see...thinking about the outside world makes me sad, I guess." Haku let his head fall back and stared up at the ceiling. "Sometimes I think I won't be accepted. But...then I'll become happy when I realize that Zabuza will be there to make sure I feel accepted, and that he'll ultimately kill anyone who doesn't treat me well." Haku smiled to himself. Naruto began to think that this Zabuza person was a force to be reckoned with.

"Uh," Kiba began, since he was the next person up. "Well, one thing th-that makes me sad is...it's the way that people look at me when I st-stutter, or if I start ticking. I just," he paused. "...they all look at me the same way, like I-I don't belong or something."

"But...you can't control that stuff," Naruto commented. "People shouldn't judge you because of somethin' you don't have control over." He said.

Kiba shrugged his shoulders. "But th-they do, and there's nothing I can do about that." Kiba lifted his head to look at Naruto who had become silent once again. The brunet continued. "And one thing that makes me happy is...my family. I love when I-I go home, y'know, 'cause they all know me and love me. And I always miss my dog, Akamaru, so I'd be happy to see him too." He ended his turn there and glanced over at the person he was sitting next to- Gaara.

The redhead glared at the patients with his ice cold eyes. "Pass."

It was now Naruto's turn to share. All eyes were on him and he suddenly found himself feeling a little nervous, especially since the only person's eyes in the crowd he could clearly see were Sasuke's. The raven was staring at him intently and silently. Naruto gulped and stared at the ground as he spoke. "One thing that makes me sad..." he wondered "I guess...not being able to control myself...losing all my self control."

"What do you mean? How could you not be in control of yourself?" Sakura asked him from across the circle.

Naruto took in a deep breath. "I...any time I start a fire," he licked his lips, which had become dry. "I never feel like I'm in control...I always feel like I've lost myself, like I don't know who I am anymore." The blond raked his fingers through his hair and let out a deep sigh. "But something that makes me happy is...when I feel cared about- when I'm needed. I...need to be needed."

He didn't say anything more after that. Hinata was sitting next to him therefore she should've been next. But Naruto, along with every other person in this room, knew that Hinata wouldn't say a word. He looked at Kurenai.

"She'll pass." Both Naruto and Neji spoke in unison. The pale eyed boy glared at Naruto hatefully as he moved closer to his cousin. Naruto was immediately sorry that he'd spoken for her when he should've realized that Neji was going to. He didn't want to make Neji hate him any more than he already did.

"The fact that I couldn't protect Hinata upsets me." he said, plain and simple. Naruto wanted to ask what he had to protect Hinata from, but he thought it wise to keep his big mouth shut. "Nothing makes me happy." He crossed his arms over his chest and became silent.

Sasuke was the last person in the circle. Naruto's eyes were glued to him instantly. He wondered what the Uchiha would say- what in the world could make Sasuke happy, Naruto wondered. And what would make him sad? He was always angry, but there had to be things that made him sad, or happy. Sasuke stared at the group of patients with a solemn, yet irritated expression on his face, and then he spoke.

"Pass."

Disappointment slapped Naruto in the face after he heard Sasuke's statement. Of course the Uchiha would pass. Why would Sasuke, king of all that is depressing and dark, share his emotions with a group of people that he clearly disliked? Naruto should've seen that one coming.

Kurenai, who'd been listening silently the entire time, nodded her head after Sasuke was finished. She looked at each and every patient before she started speaking. "Thank you all for sharing," she said. "This session went exceptionally well. I want you all to know that we will have group therapy every day from now on. It is a very necessary process that you need to go through in order for you all to have a successful release."

The woman announced that she was done and that they all could go. All nine of the patients stood up and filed out of the white room.

Naruto raked his fingers through his hair anxiously. "...where was Sai?" he asked himself while walking down the long corridor. Voices echoed after him, but he paid attention to none of them. He'd tried to keep his worrying to a minimum two days ago when Sai had freaked out after Yamato's visit. But now, things were just getting out of hand. Sai hadn't been in group therapy; in fact Naruto, hadn't seen him all day. He was genuinely concerned about his friend, so the first place he went after group therapy was Sai's room.

The blond stopped in front of the door and knocked twice. "Sai?" he called to him. Naruto heard movement behind the door, but no one answered it, and Sai didn't say a word. Naruto knocked again. "Sai, I know you're in there. Answer me, please." He pressed his ear against the door to see if he could hear anything else, but all he heard was silence.

He wished that Sai would open up and talk to him. Naruto didn't like the fact that his friend was shutting him out this way. Sai should've known that he could trust Naruto with anything, and that there was no reason he should shut himself up in a room. Naruto was here for him, and he wanted desperately to help. If only Sai would realize that...

"You know...I'm always here for you." Naruto said through the wooden door. Of course, Sai didn't respond, and so Naruto just left. There was no sense in Naruto staying there, trying to get Sai to open the door, when he knew that he wouldn't.

After leaving Sai's door, Naruto headed straight to the dining room. It was time for lunch, and he was sure that he was already late. When he walked into the room, he watched Iruka hand a bag of rice cakes to Sakura, smile, and then walk away. The girl stared at the bag in her hands for several moments before opening it, taking one out, and biting into it. The look on her face showed that she was repulsed by it, but she kept on chewing. Naruto grabbed his lunch tray and walked over to sit down across from her.

"Does it really taste that terrible?"

Sakura looked over at Naruto with an unreadable expression on her face. "I'm not in the mood to eat this," she sighed. "But Iruka's asking me to..." the girl glared at the rice cake and took another bite. Naruto had yet to touch the tray of food in front of him. "Aren't you going to eat?" she asked.

"I'm not exactly hungry." Naruto told her. His eyes traveled to the bag in front of her. "Have you eaten anything other than this today?"

The pink haired girl glowered at him. "No. But what's it to you?" she questioned, becoming a bit hostile towards Naruto's questions. The boy held his hands up, surrendering.

"I was just wondering, no worries." He assured her.

Naruto watched Sakura take another bite and then set the rice cake down. "You know, I know what you think of me." She began. "You think exactly what everyone else does."

"How do you figure you know what I'm thinking?" he asked her while spooning some peas into his mouth. They were totally tasteless. "What I think is that you're just a normal girl who's going through a lot of shit. Is that what you thought I was thinking?" he looked up at Sakura who promptly rolled her eyes. Naruto chuckled. "Didn't think so."

The girl leaned her chin against her palm. "You're different from everyone else, then." Sakura shrugged her shoulders. "Everyone else thinks I want to kill myself- I don't. I just want to be thinner. Is that a crime?"

She watched Naruto shrug his shoulders and spoon some mashed potatoes into his mouth. "Wanting to be skinny isn't a crime, but," Naruto chewed his food and swallowed. "The weight you want isn't healthy. You will kill yourself, if you keep it up." He told her. Surprisingly, Sakura laughed, albeit bitterly.

"There you go being different again." She reached into the bag of rice cakes and took out another one to nibble on. "You don't tell me what I want to hear, either." She took a bite. "Thanks."

Naruto only nodded and continued to ingest the bland meal before him. "Anytime."

The both of them dissolved into silence. Naruto ate his lunch and Sakura chose to drink a bottle of water over eating the rice cakes. That had probably been the most she'd ever talked to him about her problems and Naruto was surprised that she'd even opted to open up to him. Sakura wasn't one who really talked about her problems, so her telling Naruto anything was a big deal. Naruto actually felt like she trusted him.

After finishing his lunch, Naruto was about to go into the tv room, until he was stopped by Shizune. The woman motioned toward the phone booths. "You have a phone call- first booth." Naruto nodded and made his way over to the first phone. He picked up the receiver.

"Hello?" he answered.

"Hi, Naruto," he heard his sister speaking on the other line. "How is everything?" she asked him.

The boy shrugged his shoulders even though Aya couldn't see. "Good, I guess." He answered. "We had group therapy for the first time today."

"How'd that go?" Aya questioned.

Naruto leaned against the booth and held the phone between his ear and shoulder. "It was...interesting. I mean, the topic was kind of childish, and everyone had to talk about their feelings, but other than that it was fine. I can't say if I liked it or not, doesn't really make a difference to me."

"Do you think it'll help you?" the girl asked. Naruto let his head fall against the booths edge.

"Eh, who knows what'll help me these days."

Aya sighed on the line. "You know, soon, I'm going to come and get you out of that place for a day or two. You need a change of scenery." She told him. Naruto laughed to himself- he missed Aya so much. "I miss you, Naruto." What was she doing, reading his mind?

"I miss you too, sis." He told her. "Make sure you come soon, I'm dying to see you. And besides, it's high time you took me out for some ramen!"

"Of course." Naruto could almost hear her smiling. "I just wanted to check up on you and make sure you were doing okay. I'm glad that everything's going well." Aya told him.

Naruto nodded his head. "Yep, you don't have to worry about me!" he exclaimed. Aya laughed softly on the other line.

"I always worry about you, Naruto."

Their conversation ended after a few minutes. When Naruto finished speaking to his sister, he decided that he would go back to his room to relax. He didn't want to go to the tv room because he knew that nothing would be on television anyway.

Once inside his room, Naruto rummaged through the collection of cd's in the box on his dresser. He was itching to listen to music, yet he didn't know what artist he wanted to hear. In the end, he settled for the cd that was all the way in the back of the box. It was called 'Plans', and it was by Death Cab for Cutie. Naruto wasn't very fond of the band, but Aya was, and that was the reason he'd bought the cd in the first place.

After popping the disk into the cd player and pressing play, Naruto went and lied down in his bed. He stared up at the ceiling and listened to the music play throughout the room. He wondered how come Shikamaru wasn't in the room sleeping like he usually was, but his mind drifted away from that thought after a while.

Naruto couldn't remember how long he'd laid there in bed, but after a while he started dozing off. The sound of the door opening was what woke him up. Naruto stared drowsily at the person standing in his room. It was Sasuke.

"...you woke me up, bastard." The blond whined and turned over on his side. Sasuke sauntered over to the bed and sat down on the edge. Naruto glared at him and reached up to grab his arm. "Make yourself useful." He groaned as he dragged Sasuke down to the bed so that he was lying beside Naruto.

The raven scoffed and rolled his eyes. "I didn't come here to watch you sleep." He complained. Naruto laid his head on Sasuke's chest and sighed.

"I don't care," he mumbled. "You shouldn't have woken me up then, teme." Naruto inhaled deeply and found Sasuke's scent invading his senses. He smelled heavily of cigarettes, but there was a scent behind that which Naruto couldn't figure out. He found himself breathing in even deeper, enjoying the smell of his new pillow. "You're comfortable."

"Hn..." Sasuke grumbled.

Even with his eyes closed, Naruto found Sasuke's hand and laced their fingers together- Sasuke didn't protest. "Did you want something?" he asked. He realized that Sasuke must've come into the room for some reason, so he figured he would ask what it was. "You came here for a reason."

Sasuke's eyes drifted to Naruto's face and then down to his lips. Naruto was then fully aware of what Sasuke wanted and what he now found himself wanting as well. He leaned up, placed a hand on the raven's cheek, and brought his face down so that he could kiss him.

It was soft, innocent at first. Naruto could feel Sasuke's cold fingers tracing circles on his back, underneath his shirt. He raked his fingers through Sasuke's dark locks as he kissed him slowly. Naruto hadn't realized how much tension had been building up inside him until it had disappeared, the moment their lips had touched. Lying there with Sasuke had made Naruto feel better than he'd felt all day. Every time Sasuke came around, Naruto always got the same fluttery, bubbly feeling in his chest. Sometimes it made him nervous, sometimes happy, and sometimes even mad- but whatever he felt was there every time.

Naruto found himself pressing his body against Sasuke's, wishing for closer contact. Sasuke let his own arms wrap around Naruto's back and pull him closer. He craned his neck and placed gentle kisses along Naruto's jaw line. The raven pressed his forehead against Naruto's and stared into his eyes. "...what...are you doing to me..." he breathed. Naruto released a nervous laugh and closed his eyes.

"I should be...asking you the same thing." He whispered.

The blond found his lips being captured once again. He locked his fingers behind Sasuke's neck and kissed him lightly. Before he could pull back, Sasuke leaned in farther and deepened the kiss, nipping at Naruto's bottom lip, teeth grazing over the skin. Naruto opened his mouth and allowed Sasuke's tongue to enter. He had to admit to himself that he absolutely loved kissing Sasuke; there was just something about him that'd become addictive.

Suddenly, Naruto felt Sasuke's hands pushing his shirt up slowly. The boy shivered when he felt Sasuke's fingers tracing the tattoo that surrounded his navel. Carefully, as to not totally ruin Sasuke's shirt, Naruto unfastened each button. When the shirt was completely open, he pushed it off of Sasuke's shoulders quickly. Sasuke pulled Naruto's shirt over his head and their lips immediately locked again.

Naruto was starting to notice the ever growing ache in the pit of his stomach. He realized that this time, he and Sasuke were truly alone- there would be no Shizune walking into the room now. And if she did, it would probably be too late.

He gasped when Sasuke swiftly changed positions. The raven laid Naruto down on the bed and he positioned himself in between the boy's legs. Sasuke leaned forward and began kissing and sucking at Naruto's neck. Naruto was starting to think that Sasuke was deliberately trying to leave marks on him. At one point, Sasuke bit down on Naruto's neck so hard that it made the boy cry out, pain mingled with passion. A twisted smirk spread across Sasuke's face and he repeated his actions, causing the same reaction.

The Uchiha slowly trailed his icy fingers along Naruto's sides, making shivers run up and down his spine. He stopped when his hands reached the band of the boy's sweatpants. When Sasuke pulled the boy's sweats down to his knees, Naruto let out a sigh of relief and grabbed Sasuke's shirt front, yanking him into another kiss. Sasuke didn't need to see to know what he was doing, so he closed his eyes and dipped his hands into Naruto's boxers.

When Sasuke's cold hands touched Naruto's throbbing member, the blonde hissed and arched his back. Sasuke continued to kiss him whilst his hands slowly started thrusting against Naruto's manhood. Sasuke loved the control he held over Naruto- the boy reacted to every single touch, every kiss, and every word. When he ran the pad of his thumb across the head of Naruto's cock, the boy moaned Sasuke's name and kissed him even harder.

Naruto couldn't remember the last time he'd let someone touch him- it seemed like it'd been ages ago. He loved how Sasuke seemed to know every right way to touch and kiss him; he didn't have to tell him how to do anything. He could just lie back and enjoy.

There were so many feelings racing through his body that he found himself trembling under Sasuke. One of Sasuke's hands was on Naruto's cock and the other was holding his hand. Their fingers had been laced the entire time. Naruto closed his eyes and sighed.

"Sasuke," he breathed. The raven kissed Naruto's chin and pumped even faster. Even he could tell that Naruto was reaching his limit. His breaths were coming quicker, he was holding onto Sasuke tighter, and he kept arching his back.

And when he did come, Sasuke held onto him and kissed him the whole time. Naruto called out the boy's name for the third time and buried his face in his dark hair while his body trembled and shook with pleasure. After he finished, and Sasuke gently returned his pants to his waist, Naruto hugged Sasuke and breathed deeply.

"...don't go anywhere, Sasuke." He whispered softly. Sasuke kissed his forehead, assuring Naruto that he wouldn't leave him.
