Just Company

By Paranoia-shoujo

After a short while of staring at the clouds in silence, Naruto gave a sigh of exasperation.

"Geez! Hanging around you is so boring!" Naruto exclaimed, rolling his eyes. "Don't you speak or something?" Shikamaru ignored him. He hadn't asked to have Naruto follow him around.

Naruto sighed again. "Shikamaru! I chose to hang out with you instead of that ice-block Sasuke for a reason!"

"…" The other boy fell silent, feeling tired after a minute of letting the sun-kissed boystay beside him.

"Shika!!!"

"You're so tiresome to deal with, Naruto." Shikamaru replied after mentally debating on his sanity.

"But you're a pal, aren't you?"

Sighing, he told Naruto. "I don't want to spar."

"I never asked you to do so." Naruto answered.

"I don't want to buy you ramen."

"I never asked you to do so." Naruto again replied, as he looked skyward to see a stray cloud floating beside the others.

"I don't want to help you in a prank."

Naruto smiled before saying, "I never asked you to do so."

"And I don't want to help you make Sakura fall for you."

"I never asked you to do so."

"Then what do you want?" Shikamaru asked, exasperatedly.

"Nothing. I just want to stay here. With you." Naruto answered calmly, his eyes flicking sideward to watch the young genius roll his grey eyes.

"You make me tired, Naruto."

A laugh answered his allegation. "You're the one responsible for it, not me. I never asked you to make accusations."

"Then what are you asking for?"

"Nothing. Just some company."

"Mind telling me why you're not hanging with Uchiha?" Shikamaru asked with a frown on his lips. He didn't really dislike the other boy; it just happened to be that Sasuke was usually the cause of the sadness that every now and then etched on his companion's face.

"He's boring." At this, Shikamaru raised an eyebrow.

Mentally asking himself if this was right, he posed a question to bounce toward the blonde. "And I'm not?"

"I never said you weren't."

"…"

"…"

"What day is it today?" Shikamaru asked, his mind reeling in confusion at the thoughts running inside his head.

"10, October 10."

"I see." Sighing, he prepared himself for the next words to leave his lips. "Naruto."

"Hai?"

"Happy birthday."
