Chapter Two: Sneak Sniping

The next month continued much as the first couple of days in the strange new

place had. Simply school, work, hunting, saving money, buying stuff for the house and

learning new jutsus. All in all it began to get pretty normal. Finally after class on the last

day of the month Christie and Aya approached Iruka-Sensei.

“Can we talk to you?” Aya asked glancing at her new watch to see how much

longer she had to get to work.

“Sure what can I help you with?” Iruka asked looking up from the papers he was

grading.

“Well we appreciate all you’ve done for us up til now,” Aya began but was cut off

by Christie.

“Look Iruka-Sensei,” she said sighing, “Aya and me, we’re best friends. We love

each other like sisters. But if we’re gonna be here for a while then we’re gonna need our

own rooms. Is there a two bedroom apartment available that’s fully furnished that we

can move in to? Preferably one with two bathrooms. We’ve saved some money and it

might not be enough but we need to know what we’re looking at here.” Aya glared at her

friend for a moment but Christie simply ignored it and looked only at Iruka. The Sensei

arched a brow looking at his two top students in surprise before he burst out laughing.

While the girls looked at him with a mixture of frustration and confusion he tried to force

himself to stop laughing.

“Actually I was wondering when you were going to ask that question,” Iruka

confessed through peals of laughter. “Of course you can change apartments but we’ll

have to pick a time for it.”

“How about tomorrow,” Aya said excitedly.

“Well I suppose tomorrow might do,” the Sensei nodded getting to his feet. “Stay

after school tomorrow and I’ll take you to it so that you can move in immediately. And

don’t worry about the money,” Iruka said grinning when he saw surprise spread across

their faces. People are only too happy to help out.”

“Thank you so much,” both girls said in unison bowing deeply to show their

appreciation.

“No need to thank me,” Iruka said still grinning, “but you’d both better get out of

here before you’re late for work. The girls thanked him once more before rushing out of

the door and down the hall escaping the confines of school, each just making it on time

to work. Since it was a Wednesday night they both got off at the same time and walked

home together as was their habit. When they got there they ate and packed luckily

getting everything squared away except for the new pillows and blankets which they

needed for the night. Just before bed and while Christie was taking her shower, Aya

practiced her jutsu, running through each at least three times before the other had

finished washing up for the night. When it was her turn Aya jumped in the shower

washing quickly before hopping right back out and tossing on some pjs. Climbing into

bed with Christie she laid for a moment with her eyes open looking around. The last

thought that crossed her mind happily was that she realized that this would be their last

night in the house. Everything was set, she’d asked for the day off and tomorrow she’d

be cuddled in her own bed. Beautiful! The next morning of course went just as usual

with getting up, getting ready for school, eating breakfast, and so on except that the

pillows and blankets were stored with their other stuff. After school that day, tired and

sweaty from practicing jutsus they walked with Iruka to their new apartment.. They both

walked in immediately claiming their rooms. The living room was large and the kitchen

which was to the right was cozy. There were two bedrooms down the hallway to the left

of the front door. The first Aya claimed as her own which meant Christie got the second.

Each room was large, had its own bathroom, nice sized closets for their growing

wardrobes, and was closer to their jobs which coincidentally were only a few buildings

away from each other. The second exit was just like the one in the old apartment and

seemed to be universal; a window in the far wall of the livingroom with a fire escape

leading down. The girls decided that the place was perfect after they’d gotten their keys

from Iruka they quickly transferred their belongings. Since they didn’t need the money

for rent the girls split the money evenly and bought things like sheets and covers; as

well as bathroom supplies like soap, towels, scrubs and such. Then of course they

bought food and cleaning supplies and a couple outfits before each saving their

remaining amount. Once they’d come back from shopping the girls set to work cleaning

the new apartment. With everything clean they put their finishing touches on by fixing

the beds, putting up the towels in their own bathrooms, the toilet paper, the food, and so

on. Once they were done both were exhausted and took a bath before going to bed

without even considering dinner. In the morning Christie of course woke first getting

breakfast started before going in and waking up Aya. Once awake Aya stumbled into

her bathroom after fixing her bed then she washed her face and brushed her teeth.

Taking off her pjs she folded them neatly on the bed for use that night. Then she put on

her school clothes, which consisted of jeans and a suggestive t-shirt that read ‘So You

Think You Can Handle Me’. this was of course followed by socks and tennis shoes

before Christie called her to breakfast. After making short work of their meal the girls

found that with being closer to the school meant they had time to clean their dishes so

they did. With that done they grabbed their notebooks and pencils and walked to school.

So far they’d been in the strange village for at least six months Aya noted and

this last moth had been pure review. While everyone contemplated what was going to

happen today Iruka stood up. He called for silence which he was immediately given

followed by a bow to signify the start of class. After the students had taken their seats

once more he grinned brightly.

“Tomorrow we have our final exams on cloning. Those who graduate will attend

the graduation ceremony later that evening and then in the morning you’ll report back

here. Those students will be divided into teams of five and you’ll be told where to meet

your instructor. You are to follow your new Sensei’s orders as you would mine. Now

then you have the rest of the day off to practice for tomorrow’s exam. With that Iruka

dismissed his class and watched them file out.

“Amaya-Chan, Amaya-Chan,” Aya heard in surprise and she and Christie turned

around to see who was calling her. They waited for Naruto to catch them up and

grinned as he stood catching his breath.

“Naruto-Kun what’s up?” Aya said still grinning.

“I was wondering if you could help me work on my cloning,” Naruto said blushing

slightly. Aya shrugged looking at Christie. It was true that they had already mastered

cloning and had both been planning to see if they could get extra hours at work today.

With a sigh Aya nodded and told Christie she’d catch her later. She and Naruto

continued on to her house where she let him in and removed her shoes. She waited for

him to do the same and they both began pushing back the couch and coffee table so

that they would have room to work.

“Why didn’t you just ask your parents for help?” Aya wondered aloud as they

finished their task.

“I don’t have any,” Naruto mumbled as he took his place in the center of the

livingroom where Aya indicated.

“Oh I’m sorry,” Aya said feeling sad for him.

“Its no big deal,” Naruto said with a shrug, not used to people feeling sorry for

him.

“Ok,” Aya said shrugging though she really wanted to know which of his parents

had been a demon. They began training immediately, first with Aya showing what had to

be done and then instructing Naruto to copy her. After the first three dismal attempts

Aya frowned in irritation. “You’re trying too hard again,” she said shaking her head. “Just

relax and reach for your chakra then get the picture of two of you standing side by side

in your head.” She waited for him to follow her orders before she instructed him to say

the jutsu. After the smoke cleared she felt herself being glomped by two perfectly

formed Narutos. After she’d successfully pushed them off she took a deep breath and

smiled. “Ok so you can make one clone,” she said, “that’s nothing to gloat about yet.

Now retract the clone and try again but picture two clones.” The lesson continued on

until it was two hours before she had to go to work and Naruto had successfully created

four clones of himself. “Well that’s all you need to know,” Aya said showing Naruto out

of the house after he’d thanked her profusely. Grinning at the praise but making firmly

sure it didn’t go to her head she locked the door and went to her room taking a quick

shower. After getting dressed and grabbing a quick bite to eat she made it to work with

ten minutes to spare. Since her boss was still ringing up customers she walked through

the small shop and into the backroom where she donned her apron and braided her air

messily before securing the end with a thin scrunchie. Walking back out she was

greeted by a smile on her bosses face and him moving away from the cash register so

that she could take over ringing up the three final customers while he went to the back

to take care of other business.

“I didn’t know you worked here,” said a familiar voice which had her pausing long

enough to look up and confirm that it was indeed Sasuke standing there.

“Why is that so surprising?” Aya asked continuing to ring up his items.

“Well since you’re one of the top students in the class I figured you practiced

every spare moment of every day.”

“Well as you can see I don’t,” she said before holding up a book on advanced

jutsu and pointing to the small white tag on the bottom that asked for ID. “I’m gonna

need to see some ID.” When Sasuke handed it over she looked over the information

until she came to his birthday and noted that he was too young to be buying such an

advanced book. “Sorry but you can’t purchase this,” she said handing him back the id

before tucking the book in a basket behind her to be put away later when she was

finished with customers.

“Why not my birthday’s only in a couple days?” He asked frowning at her.

“Because this book is in advanced jutsu and you have to be thirteen to read it.”

“But in a couple days it will have been bought and Owagi-San only gets one in

once every three months.”

“Just take a breather,” Aya said rolling her eyes as she turned and grabbed the

book before walking out from behind the counter. “Just wait here and I’ll ask Owagi-San

if I can hold it for you for a couple days.” With that said Aya walked through the door

leading to the backroom and found Owagi-San sitting behind his desk calculating

something. “Excuse me Owagi-San,” she said softly making the man look up in

confusion.

“Oh yes Amaya-Chan what’s the problem,” he asked noting the book in her hand.

“Well Uchiha Sasuke-Kun is out in the shop and he wishes to purchase this book.

His birthday’s not for two days as indicated on his ID card but he really wants this book.

I was wondering if I can hold it for him until he’s old enough to pick it up.” Owagi nodded

after considering it for a moment.

“Very well you may hold the book for him in the back,” Owagi said indicating for

her to grab a scrap of paper and write Sasuke’s name on it before putting it in the

corner. “Tell him he has until closing in two days to pick up the book. If he doesn’t then it

will go back out on shelf promptly.”

“Thank You,” Aya said walking back out to the shop without the book. Sasuke still

stood by the counter frowning with his money out to pay for his other purchases. After

Aya was once again behind the counter she took his money and rang him up putting his

purchases in a brown leather sack he supplied rather than the plastic bags the shop

provided.

“Your book will be held until closing on the second day,” she said as she handed

him the sack. “If you do not purchase it by then it will be returned to the shelf to allow

someone else to purchase it.” Sasuke nodded before he turned to leave and she gave

him the obligatory farewell. “Thank you come again.” After work that night Aya went

home starting dinner before she hopped in the shower for a quick bath. When she’d

finished putting on her pj’s she walked back into the kitchen to check on dinner and set

the kettle on the stove so that she could make tea. Just as the food and tea were done

and she’d turned off the electric burners she heard the door open and called out.

“Christie-Chan is that you?” When she got no answer she frowned checking her ever

present watch. It was a bit early for Christie Aya mused as she walked out into the

livingroom. It was hard to tell who was more surprised, her or the masked figure

standing in the room but it was certainly Aya who recovered quickly. She launched

herself at the burglar forcing their head to the side and biting into their neck. Aya

ignored the hard blows she was receiving to the head and the splits in her gown as she

drank down the attackers life. When he, for it was most definitely a he from the

memories she read through the blood, fell unconscious she released him and stood

rushing to her room where she ripped off her sheets and returned with them tying up the

culprit. When that was done she rushed to the only phone, in the kitchen and called

Iruka getting an answer after the second ring.

“Iruka here,” said a sleepy voice on the other side of the line.

“Iruka-Sensei,” Aya breathed catching herself before her breath hitched.

“Amaya-Chan what’s wrong?” He asked worried as he heard the hesitation in her

voice.

“Someone tried to break in,” she said, “I stopped him and he’s lying unconscious

on the livingroom floor. I didn’t know who else to call.”

“Calm down,” Iruka told the girl as he sat up in bed and began pulling on his

pants and shoes, “I’ll be right there ok.”

“Ok,” Aya said before she hung up. Seconds after she’d sunk into a chair at the

table Aya jumped up rushing to the livingroom when she heard a scream. She found

Christie standing just outside the door staring down at the man still unconscious and

tied up in front of it. “Christie-Chan, Christie-Chan calm down,” she said reaching over

the body to tug her friend into the apartment and slam the door as people’s heads

began poking out of the doors around them. For a moment nothing was said as the girls

huddled on the couch looking at each other. They leapt almost a foot in the air at the

knock on the door.

“Its open,” Aya said still trying to swallow her still beating heart. When Iruka

walked in the girls leapt off the couch launching themselves into their teacher’s arms.

He soothed them as he pushed them toward the kitchen while he was followed in by

several people each wearing a dark cape and a white mask. “Who are they?” Aya asked

as he sat them down and began mixing tea leaves to make them some of the hot,

soothing beverage.

“They are called ANBU,” Iruka said pouring the drink into two mugs, “Dark

Warriors who are surpassed in skill by only the Hokage himself. As both girls drank their

tea in silence Iruka told them to wait in the kitchen before he went out into the

livingroom to talk to the ANBU. The girls continued to silently drink their tea and looked

up only when one of the hooded figures came into the kitchen and took a seat at the

table.

“I need to ask you some questions regarding the burglar,” said a deep voice

slightly muffled because of the mask.

“Like what,” Aya said looking the person over. Though the robes were so thick

and billowy she couldn’t tell a single thing about the person.

“First off who was home when the burglar came in?”

“I was,” Aya said automatically. “Except on Wednesdays when Christie and I get

off work together I’m usually the first one home.”

“I see and what’s your name?” The voice asked as pale hands exited from the

robe producing a pad of paper and a pencil. The figure then began writing down

everything that Aya was saying.

“My name is Dark, Amaya,” Aya said using the last name before first as she’d

grown accustomed to.

“I see and Amaya-San just what are you?”

“Oh right,” Aya said feeling her cheeks color, “I’m a Preternatural Hybrid. Half

Archangel and half Vampire. I bit the man and drained him til he past out but he’s still

alive right?”

“Yes the perpetrator is still alive and has already been taken away for

questioning.”

“Well that’s a relief,” Christie said breathing out a long sigh.

“I’m sure it is and what’s your full name Christie-San?”

“Oh my name is Jacobson, Christianne I just found the trussed up body seconds

after Aya had called Iruka-Sensei.” Christie shrugged returning to her tea.

“So you are a Hybrid just like your friend?”

“Preternatural Hybrid,” both girls chimed, though their voices were so dead it was

probably automatic.

“No I’m a full-blooded Werewolf,” Christie said. The masked person nodded

writing down the last of the information before pulling out a photo and showing it to

them.

“Do either of you recognize this man?” The girls stared down at the photo and

frowned as they saw the man. He was old, maybe early forties or late fifties Aya tried to

think from the taste of the blood. He had short, almost buzzed-cut white hair and a

pretty muscled if not giant build. But as far as the girls were concerned as they shook

their head in unison he was just another face in the village that had so recently become

their home. After the ANBU member was finished gathering information the person got

to their feet and thanked the girls for all their cooperation before going out to the

livingroom. After several minutes of sitting alone in silence again Iruka walked into the

kitchen and poured himself a cup of tea. He sat at the table sighing heavily before he

glanced up at the expectant faces of the girls.

“Well everything has been taken cared of so I want you both to put this out of

your mind. We’ll find out who the mystery man is and why he was in your apartment.

For now just get some rest, gotta have my two best students in class tomorrow after all.”

They all laughed and Iruka stood emptying and washing his cup before saying good bye

and letting himself out the door. Aya locked the door behind him as Christie dished up

the still warm food. They ate quickly and washed their dishes putting them away before

they went to bed.
