Chapter Twenty-Two: Small Discovery

As Aya stepped off the final stair and into the livingroom looking around. Her teammates, besides Sereku who was probably in his room. Licking his metaphysical wounds Aya decided with a mental chuckle. And of course Christie was missing but since she smelled food in the kitchen she figured that was where the other girl was. At first Aya though about going to bug her best friend but decided against it and instead turned toward the couch. She plopped down in an empty armchair, her chair everyone knew, and turned glancing at the TV to see what was on. Some mindless talk show it looked like Aya thought with humor, as she let herself sink into other people’s problems.

After the talk show ended another came on, and another after that. Before long Aya found herself getting sleepy as people ranted and raved at each other on the screen. Sad, Aya thought to herself as she finally slipped back into sleep. She awoke much later to a hand shaking her awake. Startled out of the nightmare she’d been having about the fight with the ninja before Neji’s death and the morning after Aya came awake quickly. When Sereku saw her stirring he moved to step back but Aya caught him around the middle with her arms and clung to him. Unsure of what to do Sereku stood completely still waiting for her to release him.

As Aya came back stepped back to herself, her eyes popped open and she looked up at him. Immediately a dangerous glint leapt into their depths and she immediately released Sereku. After taking a step back Sereku wisely said nothing, simply watching her as she wiper her face of the sweat and tears that clung there. When Aya was sure her face was clean she focused first on Sereku, then on the fact that the livingroom was completely dark since the sun had long set. The third thing she noticed that there was no other sound in the house to indicate the rest of her team being around. Pulling herself to a firm sitting position she looked around Sereku to the clock above the TV and read that it was just a little after seven.

“Where is everyone?” Aya asked, her voice solid and brisk despite the stuff still chasing around in her head. Neji’s death and the fact that she’d been clinging to Sereku and weeping softly when he’d woken her among them. Aya felt embarrassment but she refused to acknowledge it, refused to accept the fact that she was extremely vulnerable.
“They went out after dinner,” Sereku said evenly, regarding her curiously with his strange eyes. The moment the words left his mouth Aya wondered why Christie hadn’t woken her up. Of course she might have killed her if she had Aya thought with a small chuckle before turning her attention back to Sereku who was still standing there, staring at her silently.

“Why didn’t you go with them?” Aya asked her tone back to brisk even after the laughter. Sereku wasn’t stupid. He could sense the embarrassment she was feeling at him waking her up out of a nightmare. He also knew that she would have rather suffered through the nightmare instead of waking up clinging to him as she cried. Hell he was sure he would have preferred her waking up on her own. Still at least he knew a little bit about his enigmatic leader he figured. But he wanted to know more.

“I was working out,” he said with a light shrug. Aya looked up at him with an arched brow before she shrugged as well and got to her feet. As she moved to walk past him and see about her dinner he said something that stopped her dead in her tracks. “Who is Neji?” Aya turned around to look at him surprise filling her eyes for a second before it was gone to be replaced with a cod look.

“No one,” she said quietly. Sereku only arched a brow at her before pressing on.

“If it was no one then why did you keep crying his name?” He asked watching her face for a slight change.

“He’s dead,” Aya said, her voice turning ice sharp though Sereku didn’t miss the hurt that fluttered through her crimson, gold orbs. He should leave it at that Sereku thought, let it go and let her be. But still he pressed on wanting to know why she had clung to him so desperately when he’d woken her.

“Who was he to you?” Sereku asked carefully.
“A worthless human who died,” Aya said her eyes beginning a slow swirl of color to indicate she was getting angry. “A human who taught me that all humans are worthless and weak except for my friends.”

“If he’s so worthless then why were you crying for him?” Sereku continued relentlessly. Aya growled at him then, low and dangerous, clearly a warning if ever he’d heard one Sereku thought.

“It’s none of your business so fuck off,” Aya said angrily. “Don’t ever mention that name to me again. Got that?” Aya said before spinning on her heels and walking through the kitchen door. Sereku watched her go, remembering the hurt in her eyes when she’d spoken of her lost teammate. He remembered the slight tremor that ran through her body and felt sorry for her. Then he wondered why he cared as he turned and went back upstairs to work out. Working out always helped him solve his problems and this was definitely a problem that needed to be solved. Though how or why he intended to solve it was anybody’s guess.

Sorry so short you guys but that’s where the chap wanted to end. Oh well I hope you liked it and I look forward to your reviews.
