TEN YEARS LATER
In The Present

It's been ten years. I NEED to get out. I've taken the punishment for all this time. Kakashi won't even remember me anymore. He's probably married to Ayame with 3 kids by now. These goons don't worry about me trying to escape. They just watch me incase I have something to tell them. I think it's time I showed them what I can really do. I never did put up a fight. These bruises will fade eventually, and I'll be home when they do.

Raye was still locked in the same dirty cell, chained to the same steel chair, except this time she was covered in her own blood. She was dirty and looked run-down, her hair was a mess and covered a lot of her face. Her head was hung low. All of the beatings had begun to take effect, leaving her tired and hungry, although the nourishing meal she dreamed of never came.
`If they don't untie my wrists soon, my hands shall fall off.' Raye murmured to herself, looking at the raw skin surrounding the cords that wound her hands together, in an attempt to prevent any jutsu.
`Alright miss. It's time for your meal and then your daily beating. Don't forget to keep that food in your stomach when they punch it this time, or you'll be starving all day and all night.' As the large guard walked away from the bars he laughed uncontrollably. The usual man came in with a loaf of stale bread, some moldy cheese and a glass of dirty water. He grinned and his rotten teeth presented themselves. He feed her with his disgusting hands and watched as she fought the urge to vomit up the old food and water.
`You filthy man.' She spat at him. He smiled in glee. She bowed her head as he left, trying to calm her retching stomach. There another slight “chink” and the cell door opened, allowing the last person for the day entry to the once powerful ninja. Raye's mouth twitched, and she gave a very small smirk. As the guard approached, fist as the ready, she managed to make a single hand sign. She was going to escape, and now was the time.

Two ninja were on watch at the gate. No-one interesting ever came to the Village Hidden in the Leaves. All of the searches for the great Raye Uzumaki had stopped years ago, and life seemed pretty average.
`Why doesn't anyone ever come this way anymore? It's so boring.'
`I know, but if being bored means protecting the village then we have no choice.' The guards were both slumped against walls, hoping for some action, just itching to test out their skills after sitting still all day.

Raye staggered slowly towards the village. Her sense of direction was still amazingly keen, and she knew the forest well. Her leg had been whipped repeatedly; another way to deter her from trying to escape, but no injury could stop her from getting back to see Kakashi. Even if only that.

There it is! I'm almost home! But, the guards? Will they know who I am? Will they permit me entry into the village? I hope so. And if they don't, then I might just have to remind them why I'm still alive.

The guards saw a sudden movement from the trees. It was a woman. She was moving slowly, and she appeared to be limping pretty badly. Blood was seeping from her leg. They squinted at her, trying to make out her face. She saw them and moved quicker, trying to get there as fast as possible.
`Help!' she was saying. They could barely make out the word. `Help me, please! I need water. Water.' Raye felt dizzy. She began to sway as she walked, and one of the guards came cautiously to her aid. He helped her to walk to the gate, where he sat her down and fetched her some water.
`Thank-you.'
Raye voice sounded gravelly and unused. She had been walking for days, breathing in the dust and not having any water to soothe her burning throat.
`Tell me who you are and what you want with the village.' One of the guards said.
`I'd like to, but I'm afraid that you won't believe me.'
`Try me; I can be pretty open minded.'
`Alright then. My name is Raye Uzumaki; I'm the daughter of the deceased Fourth Hokage. I was the head of the ANBU black-ops before my capture ten years ago and I was next for the title of Hokage, which I'm sure, has been disregarded due to my absence.'
She recounted how she had been captured and then escaped so long after. The guards looked stunned.
`No way,' the other guard cut in, `Raye Uzumaki was taken years ago in the war. ANBU teams looked everywhere, Kakashi Hatake made sure of that. He quit the ANBU black-ops after he was ordered to stop the searches.' Raye was taking this in quietly while sipping at the water.
`He quit the ANBU?'
`Sure did. Said it to the Third Hokage himself.'
`I heard of the Third Hokage's demise at the hands of Orochimaru.'
`Yeah, pretty sad. Lady Tsunade is Hokage now.' The other guard looked solemn.
`Now, it's not that I don't believe you. It's just that you have a pretty unlikely story. If you have no proof, then I'm afraid I can't let you in.'
Raye thought about this carefully. Then she ripped her left sleeve and showed the tattoo on her shoulder.
`Honorable daughter, please forgive me. You have entry.'
`That's fine. Thank-you. Might I ask one more favour?'
`Of course. Anything as all.'
`Take me to the hospital.' The guard carefully lifted her arm over his shoulder, and then took off, trying not to harm her delicate body anymore.

The nurses had fixed up Raye's major injuries, and watched in amazement as she used a medic ninja jutsu to heal her smaller wounds. They would not allow her to endanger herself further by healing her more serious wounds, afraid that the chakra involved could put too much stress on her thin frame. They started feeding her high-energy and nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables, meat and chocolate straight away. They were trying to get her body functioning as normally as possible.
She had convinced them that she needed to go for a walk. She had been sitting on a chair for years, and she was hungry. They gave her some money, which she put into her green frog purse, a complete mistake. Her father had bought her and her infant brother both a frog purse on the day of his birth, his to be green, hers to be pink. Somehow they had ended up switching them around, and Raye still carried her green one. She had headed directly to Ichiraku's ramen stand, expecting to find Ayame with a wedding ring and pregnant, Kakashi watching their 3 kids and telling her not to overdo it.

Instead she found Ichiraku and Ayame alone as usual. Ayame was not pregnant, and her finger was bare. Kakashi was no-where in sight.
`Hey Ichiraku, Ayame. How's business?' Raye acted like the ten years had never passed.
`Raye? Is that really you!?' Ayame looked amazed to find her “friend” in front of her after all this time.
`Sure is. So how's Kakashi Ayame? You haven't stolen my man after all this time have you?'
`No! Of course not! I would never dream of it.'
`You enjoyed it, didn't you?'
`I looked, but I NEVER touched I swear!'
`It's alright Ayame, I believe you, but I wouldn't have blamed you.' Ayame gave a sigh of relief.
`So Raye, what'll it be today?'
`Barbeque pork please, Ichiraku.'
`Coming up.'

Naruto walked up to Ichiraku's. There was a strange lady there that he'd never seen before, yet somehow she seemed familiar.
`Hey there! If it isn't my favourite knucklehead! What can I get you?'
`Ramen with barbeque pork please!'
`Sure thing, Naruto.'
`Hey, Ichiraku!' Naruto was whispering, but Raye had excellent hearing.
`Who's that strange lady over there?'
`She's quite an old friend.'
`So you mean she's like Grandma Tsunade and pretends to be younger than she really is?'
`No, Naruto. It's been ten years since anyone's seen her. She was captured in the war long ago. She only escaped a couple of weeks ago.'
`Oh. Well she mustn't be very good if she only just escaped.'
`NARUTO! Watch what you're saying! She's the Fourth Hokage's daughter. And she was the head of the ANBU black-ops by the time she was 8 years old. Her record is more impressive than that of Itachi Uchiha and Kakashi Hatake. Her reputation makes enemy ninja fear her, and target her.'

Wow, this girl was the Fourth Hokage's daughter? And the Fourth was the strongest as well! And she's stronger than Kakashi sensei AND Sasuke's brother Itachi. Maybe she really is good. But she looks so pale and thin. I wonder what happened to her.

Raye had a small stack of bowls compared to Naruto's several dozen.
`Thanks, Ichiraku. I needed that.' She reached into her green frog purse and pulled out the money the hospital gave her. Ichiraku shook his head.
`No. It's on the house for you Raye. I wouldn't feel right charging you after so long.'
`But Ichiraku..'
`I insist!' Raye turned to Naruto.
`Are you done?' Naruto just burped as a reply.
`I'll take that as a yes. Let me pay for the boy instead.'
`But Raye!'
`You can't possibly turn down me paying for that many bowls of ramen, Ichiraku.'
`Oh fine.' Raye smiled in victory. She stepped away from the bench.
`Hey kid, you coming?'
`Why would I come with you?'
`Because I just bought you lunch. You're in debt.' Naruto huffed and followed Raye as she wandered around the village.

`So tell me about yourself. What was your name? Naruto?'
`Naruto Uzumaki, and I'm gonna be Hokage one day! Believe it!' Raye stopped.
`Uzumaki? You're last name is Uzumaki?'
`Sure is! AND I'm gonna be Hokage!'
`I'm sure you are one day with that attitude. You've got the right state of mind for it, kid. Just don't forget your friends on the way.'

Wow, no-one's ever said something like that to me before. They always laugh or tell me that there's no way a kid like me could ever be Hokage. But this lady, I've just met her and she thinks I could really do it.

`Uh, Naruto?' Naruto was walking forwards, his eyes sparkling, looking up at the sky.

This kid is seriously deranged. Could he really be my little brother? It's been years, but, his hair, and his eyes! Is it possible? I guess there's only one way to find out, but first I should stop him from…BANG …walking into a pole.

`Naruto? Naruto? Are you alright?'
`Huh? My head is spinning.' Raye smiled and laughed.
`I'm not surprised, you walked right into a pole.'
`Not again!'
`You've done this before?'
`NO! Who told you that!? Oh wait…'
`It's alright Naruto. C'mon.' She led him into the forest.

`First, I'm gonna need some proof of your identity.'
`Whaaaaaaaaaaat!?' Raye laughed again.
`Don't worry, just take off your shirt. I want to try something.'
`I'm not sure…'
`Just take off the damn shirt!'
`Fine.' Naruto reluctantly removed his jacket and shirt. Raye inspected the seal.
`Jiraiya!' Raye yelled angrily.
`What? What? Tell me!' Naruto looked half worried and half excited.

That old lecher! He really does want Naruto to be the best he can be, doesn't he? By giving him access to the nine-tailed fox demons chakra, Naruto can borrow his power when necessary.

`Put your shirt back on. I want you to show me how you're going to become Hokage.'
`Huh? I don't get it.'
`She wants you to fight her, Naruto.'
`Pervy sage!? What are doing here?' Raye was doubled over in silent laughter as the two began to quarrel. Jiraiya had heard her yell.
`Well, I heard a lady calling my name and I thought someone wanted to help me with my research.' Jiraiya said in the sexiest voice he could muster. Sadly, it was not enough. Naruto pulled a sickened face, and Jiraiya continued to speak.
`So I came running! Or bouncing? Either way, but then I saw Raye. At first I thought she really did want to help me with my research….but then I remembered what happened last time I tried that.' Now Jiraiya's face looked odd. Not sickened, but very pale.

`Why, hello there honorable daughter. Out here all alone? Training no doubt?'
`What do you want Jiraiya, I'm busy.' Raye gave Jiraiya a sideways glace.
`I just wanted to know if you were interested in helping me with my research, I'm writing a book you know.'
`I'm sure you are, Jiraiya.' Raye gave Jiraiya a small smile, and continued her training.
`Well that's one strong jutsu you've got going there. So, if you'll just continue training as normal for my research. Although it would help if you weren't wearing so many clothes.' Jiraiya had a hopeful look on his face.
`Ji...rai...yaaa…' Raye wasn't happy.
`You're pushing it, old man.'
`Oh c'mon Raye, you just have to strip off a little!' Raye looked him right in the eye, made her hand signs again, and gave him a full blast of her jutsu.

`Damn girl! Whoever said that a girl was allowed to be that strong, or that smart, or that PRETTY!?' Jiraiya cursed as he limped away, defeated.

Jiraiya shivered at the memory. Raye was still doubled over.
`Wow pervy sage, it sounds dramatic.'
`It was it was! Hehe, you see Naruto, sometimes research doesn't work out, and then you try somewhere, like I'm going to do right now before Raye hurts me again. Hehe, see ya later Naruto, I might teach you a new jutsu!' And Jiraiya was gone.
`Well that was strange.' Naruto had a dull tone that sounded bored and hungry.
`It's starting to get late, Naruto. It'll be dark soon. If you hurry up, I can help you with a jutsu of your choice.'
`Oh really!?'
`Sure.'

Now's my chance to show off with my rasengan! Bring it on lady, I'll show you what I can really do!

`Get ready; I don't want you to go into shock over there!'
`I'm ready to see whatever you've got to show me kid.'
`Shadow Clone Jutsu!' An exact replica of Naruto popped up beside him. Naruto had already gathered his chakra, and he and the clone were ready for their attack on the tree.
`Ready?' Naruto asked his clone. The clone nodded.
`Let's do this!' They both said.
`Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah…RASENGAN!' Naruto slammed his palm full of twisting chakra into the tree, making a massive hole in it and essentially breaking the tree in half. Raye clapped slowly.
`That was very impressive, one of my father's jutsu, and his favourite as well.' Naruto had a massive grin on his face. Raye no longer doubted that this was the young boy she had left behind.
`Just make sure that you make this jutsu individual, don't let the power define you; you define the power. It's getting late as I said before, and the hospital staff will be looking for me soon. When do you train next, I'd like to watch if you don't mind.'
`Uh, of course. Tomorrow morning, here at about 8 o'clock. Don't worry if you're late, my sensei is NEVER on time.' Raye nodded and began to make her way back into the village.
`Hey! Raye?' She turned.
`Thanks for the tip. And thanks for the food too!' Raye smiled and kept walking.

`See, Sasuke! I told you she was real!' Raye was sitting elegantly on a high branch above Team 7. Minus their sensei.
`I never doubted that she was real, Naruto. I doubted that she would say that about YOU.'
`Hey! I'm just as good as you are, Sasuke!'
`Face it, Naruto. Sasuke is just a lot better than you are.' Sakura had her eyes shut and a very matter of fact tone to her voice. Naruto scowled at her.
`Thanks a lot Sakura.' She grinned smugly.
`You're welcome.'
`Alright you three, that's enough.' A calm voice penetrated their argument. They looked around, but they could not find the source of the deep, rich tone. Raye smiled, she had sensed him coming.
`You three need to work on locating genjutsu more.' Kakashi appeared suddenly. Naruto punched his hand in frustration for not noticing. Sakura was standing right next to where Kakashi was hiding, and fell backwards as the tall jonin appeared out of thin air. Sasuke rolled his eyes and Raye could not help but to grin. Kakashi had got them, and Sakura had got the brunt of the surprise.
`Just thought I'd test you. Only one person here sensed me though.' Sakura looked confused. She hadn't been paying attention to Sasuke and Naruto talking about Raye earlier, and didn't know she was there.
`Where is everyone looking? What's going on?' Kakashi sighed. He closed his eyes and called up to the tree where Raye was sitting.
`Honorable daughter, would you care to introduce yourself to these three properly?' Raye's grin faded, and her eyes felt moist.

He called me honorable daughter. Honorable daughter! I didn't expect him to still love me, but he doesn't have to show such disdain, does he? I can't let myself cry. Not in front of Kakashi, at least. I'll just have to suck it up and be strong, just like I was strong for all those years locked up. Not a single tear. I refused then, and I refuse now.

Raye let herself slide gracefully off the branch and landed on the ground with admirable ease. She contained her feelings, just as the way of the shinobi dictated.
`Honorable daughter, this is Sakura Haruno and Sasuke Uchicha. This would be Naruto Uzumaki, our hyperactive Hokage to-be.'
`I believe that Naruto and I have already met.'
`Very good. Then Sakura, Sasuke, this is Raye U…' Raye looked at Kakashi with large eyes. They were beautiful and deep, their mysteries never ending in a forever changing pool of vibrant colour.
`Raye. Her father was the Fourth Hokage, possibly the greatest shinobi our village has ever seen.' Raye nodded her silent thanks to him, and tried desperately at that moment to stop loving him; quite sure that he would have found another woman by now. Then she spotted something. In his hand, was it a novel? Make-out Paradise. By Master Jiraiya. She couldn't believe that Kakashi was reading the results of that pervy old man's RESEARCH!
`Well, since we're in the presence of such a renowned genius, both in theory and in battle, Raye, would you care to assist in our training today?' Raye considered this for a moment.
`Certainly, Kakashi. Might I ask; have you done the bell exercise?'
`It was our test to be accepted by Kakashi sensei as our squad leader and sensei. We passed, quite obviously.' Sakura took great pleasure in informing Raye of details such as this.
`And I assume that the purpose of this test was to teach you teamwork?'
`It sure was! And I got tied to a stump for it! Why is it always me?' Naruto hung his head in shame, but he bounced back pretty quickly.
`Well, this is the same thing, only the aim is to capture a bell by putting the teamwork that you've learnt to use. It's the only way to procure a bell. You will need to have a good strategy; and a back-up plan if it fails. If you go for the bells, I'll defend against you. If you attack me, I'll fight back. I won't do you any serious harm, but I will not hesitate to strike you. You'll need to come at me all at once with full force, or you'll land flat on your faces.' She jingled two bells in front of them mockingly. `Understand?' The 3 young ninja nodded comprehensively.
`Good. You can start whenever you're ready.' Raye turned and walked towards the tree calmly.
`Wait, you just told 3 ninja that they could come after you whenever they're ready, and you just turn your back and walk away?' Sasuke queried in what was near shock.
`If you want to be a good ninja, and be successful on your missions, you can't always play fair. If an opponent has you beaten, and he turns his back, you use the advantage and bring him down. Normal rules for things such as cheating and trickery do not apply. Opportunity is the key. Use it.'
Then Raye continued walking, letting the team think about her words for a while, and jumped up to the tree branch, using the same grace that she had whilst slipping down. She hopped along lazily until she found a secure and high branch in which to await their first attack. Raye sat on her hands, one leg crossed over the other, and her feet dangling over the branch. She swung her legs back and forth. Kakashi appeared in a rush of cool air and swirling leaves.

Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura had begun to plan out their first attempt at a bell. They had clearly taken Raye's words to heart and were trying their best to cooperate.
`They really do work as team. You've trained them well, Kakashi. And that Naruto kid, I've seen what Jiraiya's training has done for the boy.'
`Well, they are all quite promising, Sakura has excellent chakra control and…….'

Kakashi's words became a blur to Raye. All she could think about was their life together before the war, during the war even. The Cloud ninja using her love for him against her. Kakashi screaming her name as she was taken to that awful place for ten whole years. As he talked she smiled blankly, hoping that he was going to stop, take off his mask and kiss her at any moment, but knew he never would.
`…..suke has been through so much. It's amazing how strong his urge to defeat his older brother Itachi is, he's just pushed himself harder and har..' Raye cut him off. She touched his hand and stared him in the eye.
`I've missed you Kakashi. So much, I've missed you. Now I'm here with you, all I can think about is when we were together. I know that was the past and I should be looking to the future, but when I try to imagine the future it's blocked. There's one big, handsome, charming obstacle in the way, and you're it. My love for you is still too strong to deny, though I wish I could.'
Raye's eyes filmed and she looked at the ground so very far below, hoping that the earth would absorb the deep red blushing in her cheeks.

A shuriken flew past Kakashi's head, and Raye caught it between two fingers without looking up. She threw it back and heard a dull clang as someone managed to block it just it time, but still got scraped by it's point. It was Sakura, and she had deflected it towards Sasuke's arm behind her. Raye moved with amazing agility for someone who had been so badly injured and chained down for so long. Kakashi couldn't keep his eyes off her.

When Raye stopped on a branch to rest her leg, Kakashi gently took her by the wrist. It was still bandaged from the ropes.
`Let's go for a walk.' Raye swallowed hard.
`Really?'
`You still need to tell me what happened in the war.' Raye smiled at his kindness.
`And, I did miss you too. A lot.'

Maybe there is still hope.

Kakashi and Raye walked side by side through the forest. The trail wound into its depths. Raye was telling Kakashi of her capture. Kakashi was getting mad.
`The Cloud ninja did what!? How dare they toy with your emotions like that! No wonder they were able to capture you.' Raye looked away quickly.
`Do you blame me for letting them take me?' Kakashi put an arm around her shoulders.
`No, Raye. If someone did that to me I would've completely fallen apart. Being locked up in a cell like that, no-one could've handled it. Only you.'
Tears formed in Raye's eyes as Kakashi pulled her towards him. He held her, and she squeezed him tightly, glad to be back in his loving embrace. He took her shoulders and held her back. She placed her hands against his chest, and felt his heart beating faster. He pulled down his mask and lowered his head to Raye's. As their lips met Raye felt like the whole world was cheering for them, chanting their names. Fireworks exploded through the sky and lights went off. Raye felt like nothing could bring her down. As they broke from the kiss, Kakashi held one arm around Raye, keeping her close to him as they continued to walk through the forest.

Reunited, Kakashi and Raye had gone off the trail of the forest. It had been a while since they'd seen Team 7, and they were starting to get suspicious. Without saying a word, Kakashi had promised not to get involved. It was not his test. Without warning, Sasuke's phoenix fire jutsu came inches away from Raye; luckily her reflexes had not diminished. She pulled Kakashi with her and jumped out of the way, taking up an offensive stance. Kakashi leapt to a branch above to observe his student's tactics and skills. He had not simply watched their techniques in a long time now.
Sakura lunged at Raye with a kunai, aiming for the bells. Her attempt to cut them loose after a surprise attack from Sasuke was a good plan, but Raye had the unfair advantage. She easily sidestepped Sakura's attack and caught her arm, throwing her in the opposite direction. If Sakura had good chakra control, now was the time to use it; Raye had thrown her feet first towards a nice wide tree trunk. If Sakura didn't want broken legs, she needed to gather as much chakra in her feet as possible and cushion the impact, before gripping the bark and kicking off.
Fortunately for Sakura, she had been practicing, and her keen mind thought of this counter immediately, impressing Kakashi with her quick thinking and stable chakra.
Both Naruto and Sasuke would've either fallen or broken their legs. These two both attacked from either side at the same time, and Sakura came down with an array of weaponry from above. Raye started having flashbacks of the war, and the bump on her head where a steel bar and made impact throbbed. She quickly focused her chakra and disappeared, instead standing on a low but thick branch. Her head swam with words, yelling and torture. Not once had she even flinched while captured. Never cried, never screamed, and never even whimpered. Now she wanted to. Her head felt like it was splitting from the pain, and she was falling. The same feeling she had when the fake Kakashi ripped her to shreds.
Kakashi saw Raye falling to the ground. Team 7 stopped, they knew that they had not even made contact, and something was wrong. Within seconds Kakashi had caught Raye midair and was holding her securely on the ground, like a beast protecting its prey. He took off into the trees. Raye's eyes were closed, but she was still half-conscious.

Raye woke up in the hospital. Kakashi had been watching her sleep with his squad waiting downstairs. He had refused to leave until Raye woke up. Thankfully the genin hadn't worked out the rekindled relationship yet. Raye sat up, Kakashi had his back turned. He was arguing with a nurse.
`I'm sorry, I just can't release her yet, Kakashi. You saw what happened earlier! She still has some head trauma. When she's made a complete recovery, she can go.'
`But what's the point!? She goes out all day and then comes back here at night. Explain that to me.'
`I'm sorry Kakashi. There's nothing that I can do.' Kakashi sighed and turned around to face Raye. She was sitting up and staring at him, looking quite confused.
`Are you alright?' Kakashi looked directly at Raye's eyes. He had his headband pulled up, showing his sharingan.
`I'm fine; I just got kind of dizzy. I had flashbacks of being captured, them torturing me, screaming at me to answer them. And I never did.' Kakashi glanced at the clock on the bright wall.
`I really want to stay, but I've got the team waiting outside. I wouldn't let them leave until you were okay. I'll finish their training for the day and I'll be back tomorrow. I'll have been and gone by the time you wake up; we have lots of local missions to be carried out, so we have to get an early start at them.'
`I understand.' Raye squeezed his hand, and he left quietly. Raye lay back down with a dull thud. She smiled at their day together and fell asleep, dreaming of his perfect face.

Once outside the hospital, Kakashi told Team 7 to beat him back to the forest to finish their training for the day. He met Guy on his way out.
`Visiting Lee again?'
`Lady Tsunade said he should be good to start training again in about a week. His recovery from this operation has been tough. He needs my support.'
`I'm sure he does.'
`And I heard that a lovely lady had somehow made her way back to the village. After all those years Kakashi, does she even care for you anymore? Maybe it's time to show her what a real man looks like.' Guy was too cocky for his own good. Kakashi grabbed him by the throat and held him to the hospital wall.
`If you even think about going near Raye I'll pin you to a tree with my kunai until you cry, Guy.' Guy struggled in Kakashi vice like grip.
`Calm down there, Kakashi. I'm not going to hurt her.'
`I mean it Guy. Stay away from her. You've already cut her self-esteem once. You're not going to make this harder for her.'
`Right. Sorry, Kakashi.' Kakashi dropped Guy onto the ground like a sack of potatoes. He sped off to meet Team 7.
