Chapter Four
~~
Hinata leaned casually against the tree, absently twirling a strand of hair, before looking up at the sky and sighing.
Naruto-kun came back a few days ago… I wonder where he’s at…
“Oi.”
She blinked and looked to the side to see Kiba standing next to her, with Akamaru behind him.
“Kiba-kun?”
“Yo.”
He greeted with a grin. Akamaru barked and came around his friends side to pant expectantly at Hinata. The Hyuuga heiress smiled and stroke her hand up the big dogs snout and ruffled the fluff atop his head.
“Good morning, Akamaru-kun.”
She leaned back and smiled up at Kiba.
“Good morning to you as well, Kiba-kun.”
He nodded and set his hands on his hips, looking around with slit eyes.
“Have you seen Shino? We were supposed to train today.”
“I’m sorry, Kiba-kun. I haven’t seen him.”
Kiba stared at Hinata from the corner of his eye, his lips parted in a blank expression, before he grinned and chuckled, looping an arm around her shoulders.
“Well seeing as it looks like you’re not doing anything, maybe you’d join us instead?”
Hinata blushed and smiled.
“Its true I don’t have anything to do…”
She trailed off and hooked her pointed fingers together. She wore a blue and white long sleeves, loose shirt with a blue and white ying yang on her back, identical pants just as baggy hung from her hips.
Kiba wore a mesh shirt with a black tank top and black cargo shorts.
“Great! So c’mon! Akamaru will give us a ride!”
“Okay.”
She said with a smile, allowing him to help her up onto Akamaru’s back, even though they both knew that she didn’t need his help. Kiba jumped up behind her, wrapping an arm around her waist and digging into the fur of Akamaru’s shoulder before setting his chin on her shoulder.
“Nervous?”
She blushed and smiled.
“Nervous? Should I be?”
He snickered and woofed quietly, signaling to Akamaru they were ready to go. The big dog started out in a lazy trot, taking back roads and rooftops to get out of the village.
“I don’t know, should you be?”
“Kiba-kun.”
She shook her head with a giggle and reached down to hold his forearm while she leaned down and scratched behind Akamaru’s ear. Kiba blushed and screwed his mouth around to keep from clearing his throat or making a noise.
Akamaru lazily trotted from rooftop to rooftop, carrying his passengers towards the third training ground. Upon reaching it, Kiba slid off first, making Hinata blink in confusion as he held out his hand to her.
“C’mon.”
She blushed and stared at his hand.
Is he…?
She placed her hand in his, suddenly weary.
But if he likes me… I like Naruto-kun…
“C’mon, Hinata. What are you waiting for?”
Smiling, the Hyuuga heiress placed her hand in his and swung off the large ninja-dog. Once she was clear, Akamaru trotted towards a large tree and sat down in the shade, leaving both humans to stare after him in surprise, forgetting their hands were still linked.
Hinata snapped out of it first and squeaked softly, jerking her hand free and stepping aside. Kiba blinked in surprise, then blushed and scratched the back of his head.
“Heh, sorry about that Hinata.”
The inu-ninja turned away and made his way about ten feet from Hinata, before turning around to face her.
“You ready?”
“Akamaru is not going to accompany you?”
She asked, glancing at the large white dog, now reclining regally in the shadow’s and licking his paw absently.
~~
Sakura sent a smoldering glare at Sai, who stood off to the side with the same fake smile on his face as he watched the Hokage talk. Naruto was in the same boat, hardly hearing what the Hokage said while watching Sai.
“--Suna under the orders of the Kazekage.”
Naruto whipped his head around, his mouth opening.
“Hokage-sama, I understand the difficulty of his mission and the consequences it entail’s.”
Naruto glanced at his mate in wonderment. What was going on?
“Foolish boy. She is being sent to Suna on a mission. We will not accompany her.”
“What?! She’s NOT going without me, Tsunade-baba! S’not happening like that!”
Tsunade’s caramel brown eyes hardened as her nose wrinkled slightly.
“Naruto!”
The blonde wilted slightly under her smoldering glare.
“Did you not just hear what I said?”
“Ermn… no… not really. But won’t this be the second time someone split up Team Kakashi!?”
The blonde haired Jounin, who stood off to the side snickered softly, his nose buried in his little orange book. Yamato stood in the back of the room. He was no longer ‘apart’ of Team Kakashi, but I an odd way, he still was.
Shizune stood to the Hokage’s left, her arms full of papers. She sighed at Naruto and hung her head.
“Sakura is the only one fit to-.”
“I don’t care! I’m not having her go anywhere without me! I’m serious, Hokage-sama, I’m not letting her go without me. BOTH of you can beat me into a bloody plump as many times as you want! SHE’S NOT LEAVING WITHOUT ME!”
“Excellent, boy.”
“Shut up, I’m not doing this for you.”
“No. You’re ding it for her, and that’s fine with me.”
“Damn kitsune…”
Tsunade blinked in surprise, sitting back in her chair as Sakura gasped and jerked away from Naruto at the ferocity in his tone. Naruto noticed the distance without having to take his eyes from Tsunade, and easily looped an arm around her waist and arching his own eyebrows at Tsunade, daring her to stand beside her former order.
The Hokage frowned and tapped her finger’s on her desk.
“I see.”
“Good. Sakura and I are going on mission’s together, from now on.”
He turned to Sakura with a soft smile.
“That’s alright with you, right?”
She folded her arms, ignoring the way his thumb brushed across the muscles in her side.
“Oh, so now I get a say?”
“No. I’m still going with you.”
“What if I don’t want to go with you on your missions?”
“Then I won’t go on them.”
Sakura’s mouth opened. Tsunade watched on in amusement, Kakashi was looking over the top of his book, and Sai was looking at the two with an expression that was genuine, but unreadable.
“Sakura?”
Tsunade persisted, unable to hide the grin spread across her lips. When both the younger nin’s looked at her, she schooled her features and leaned back in her chair, arching an eyebrow.
“Well? What do you say to that?”
“That… That I agree. After all, it’ll be that much more harder to kill us, if Naruto and I stick together. Right, Kakashi-sensei?”
“Uh… Don’t bring me into this.”
He mumbled and lifted his book up enough to cover his face again. Naruto snorted and pulled Sakura tighter against his side.
“Fine. However, should you make this decision, you will be forced to break up Team Kakashi and join Sakura’s Medical ANBU Squad, which consist of Hinata Hyuuga, Azuka O’Hara, Shikamaru Nara.”
Naruto’s eyebrows rose sharply.
“Shikamaru, I thought he was in with the Chunin Exams?”
“Correct, however, he has been replaced, apparently he did not, in his words, working with children. Because of his genius mind, Sakura managed to convince him to join the Medical Field. As it stands, Sakura and Hinata are still training him, though he’s good enough to work on his own. However, his mission requires Konoha’s best Medic Nin. This will be Team Sakura’s very first official A-Rank mission.”
Naruto couldn’t miss he light that brightened his lover’s face. Smiling in satisfaction, he went to open his mouth when Tsunade gave him a glare that nearly made him twitch.
“You will follow ever order that Sakura gives you, Naruto. She is ANBU Captain and she will have enough on her plate in dealing with Medical Procedure, she won’t have time to baby-sit you. Because you are not a Medical Nin of any sort, you are considered a weakness on the Team. You will remain out of sight during this mission, for as much as possible, and train in your field.”
“B-but-.”
“Think of it this way, Naruto-kun, Tsunade is one of the best Hokage’s short of the Third, and she’s a Sanin Medical Genius. Becoming the Sixth and having the Legendary Sanin Hokage’s Medical training under your belt will only prove to sharpen your skills further and get big points with the Elders.”
Tsunade smiled at her apprentice and nodded.
“She’s right, Naruto. Do you accept.”
Naruto stared at Tsunade for a moment, then grinned.
“Hell yeah! But even if I didn’t, I’d have to anyway, cuz I’m not letting Sakura out of my sight!”
Sakura blushed an swallowed, reaching up toy with her bangs.
“By the way, Sakura. What made you go with that hairstyle?”
Everyone looked over to see Kakashi looking over his book again, his lazy eye looking straight at her. Sakura blushed and blinked.
“Why?”
“Its looks familiar.”
“Ch, it should old man! Even I said it looked like your hairstyle! She said it was more feminine than yours, and their for, wasn’t the same.”
“Hm.”
Sakura rolled her eyes and pulled out of Naruto’s arm and walked forward. Tsunade as already holding up the mission folder, Sakura grabbed it with a bow and left.
“Oi! Oi Sakura!”
“Shut up Naruto.”
“But Sakura-”
“I said shut up!”
She screeched with a sigh and glanced over her shoulder to see him with his arms crossed behind his head, looking at her it his eyes closed and a frown on his lips.
“What’d I do this time?”
He whined and jogged up to her side.
“…Nothing.”
“Liar.”
“ Shut up.”
“Sakura, damnit!”
She sighed as he jerked her around and cupped her face with both hands.
“I’m sorry, I wasn’t making fun of you, and neither was Kakashi-sensei, you know us better than that!”
Sakura sighed, feeling a tingled waved rushed down her chest.
“Gomen-nasi Naruto-kun… I just… So much has happened.”
“No kidding.”
He hugged her, slipping a hand into her hair, the other smoothing up her spin to settle on her left shoulder blade.
“Just, take as much time as you need, koi. Don’t be afraid to fall, I’ll catch you. I promise.”
She set her forehead on his collarbone, placing her hands on his side’s, feeling the ribs expand and contract with each breath he took and released.
“I’m a cat, baka, I won’t fall.”
He chuckled and kissed her temple, pressing her face further into his shoulder.
“My koishii…”
She sighed and closed her eyes, feeling the tingle start from the back of her neck and swirl around her shoulder, making her shiver. Naruto reacted by rubbing her back and massaging her shoulder’s. Sakura melted into him, releasing sigh and bonelessly slumping against him.
“Can we go home for a bit… I don’t feel very good.”
“Sure, want me to carry you?”
“N, I kinda want to run.”
He smiled and pulled back, cupping her cheeks before moving his hands into her hair, watching as his fingertips massaged her scalp and temples.
“Beside’s, maybe we can have a quickie before we have to go and find my Team?”
He snickered and bent down to kiss her.
“I’d never think of objecting to any idea along those lines, from you Sakura.”
She smoothed her hands up to his chest, purring as she shifted closer, rolling her torso against his and smoothing one hand up the side of his neck and back around to cup the base of his skull.
“Good.”
He snickered and bent down to kiss her.
~~
She couldn’t believe what she’d seen. She was frozen, unfeeling and deaf for a moment as her hair was picked up by the breeze of their passing, slapping her in the face. Hinata lowered her face and turned away from the harsh flick of her own hair.
Kiba sniffed and growled, his eyes narrowing as he followed the two ninja who’d passed by the training ground, playing an arousing game of tag.
He shifted his gaze back to Hinata and sniffed again. The girl’s sadness was so tangible around her that the dog-ninja could already smell the tears that the girl’s body hadn’t produced yet.
Wordlessly, Kiba walked up behind Hinata and set his hands on her shoulder’s. He ignored the way she tensed, bending down to set his forehead against to the back of her head.
“I’m so sorry, Hinata-chan…”
She closed her eyes, her nose tingling as tears gathered in her eyes. Kiba’s arms wove around her throat loosely as he pressed his chest against her back.
“I can help you, you know. All you have to do is ask…”
She stiffened, a blush rising to tint her nose and cheek’s. Her eyes slowly opened, spilling the tear’s when she blinked.
“Kiba…”
He smiled and shifted closer, feeling her fingertips touch his powerful arms.
“I know you love him, I’ve known since the moment you first saw him. I could smell you, I can always smell you, even if your not in the village.”
He sighed and closed his eyes, rejoicing that she wasn’t shoving away from him fear and panic, like he’d half expected her to.
“K-Kiba-kun…”
What was this? Why was Kiba acting this way?
I knew he liked me… I’ve always known… But why… Why now?
“Please, Hinata… I… You may not like me, like you like Naruto… But, if it means anything, I like you… Allot actually. So, give me a chance?”
His arms moved out from under her fingertips and left her. She shivered as a breeze swept her clothes, tugging them gently. Was he waiting for her to turn around? Could she turn around? Did she have the strength? Yes. Did she want to? Maybe…
He remained silent though, standing near enough for her t know he was there, but he wouldn’t touch her. In the background, Hinata noted that Akamaru had moved, and stood beside the inu-ninja. The sound of him moving made her heart flutter, but he only set his hand down on Akamaru’s head.
“Kiba-kun… I… I don’t know what to say?”
“I won’t pressure you, Hinata. If you accept me, I’ll be completely submissive. I’ll follow your lead in everything we do. If… If you decline, I promise we can pretend this never happened. No one will have to know, because I won’t tell them.”
She closed her eyes and peeked over her shoulder, her tears clouding her vision as her chest fluttered with each breath she took. Was this for real? Was he serious?
His chin was down, and he was watching her through his bangs. His arm was casually draped across Akamaru’s head, his fingers playing with a few strands of fur absently.
She looked back forward again with a gasp. She blushed and swallowed.
Wow…
“I… N-need to go home now, Kiba-kun… Do-do you want to walk me home?”
She squeaked and squeezed her eyes closed.
Awk! How stupid was that?!
“Sure, Hinata. I’d love to.”
He brushed past her with a wink, and she felt her heart drop to her stomach. She flinched softly in awe, but Akamaru walked up on her other side and nudged her hand. Grateful for the distraction, she turned to the dog and scratched behind his ear.
The dog tipped his head under her hand and stepped forward, urging her to follow. She fell in step between Kiba and Akamaru, surprising herself with a content smile. Glancing at Kiba, she blushed and smiled again, this time it was uncontrollable in the way she grinned.
Kiba noticed and almost couldn’t stop the toothy grin of victory. Akamaru yipped in approval, but thankfully Hinata took it as a sign for attention. Kiba folded his arms behind his head then with a sigh, looking around him at the buildings and people, ninja and civilians that populated Konoha.
“Kiba-kun?”
“Aa?”
He blinked down at her in surprise. She blushed and bit her lower lip, horrified that she’d spoke.
“I-I-I uh… Gomen…”
She mumble in defeat. He chuckled and let his knuckles brush against her as he dropped his arms. But he easily shifted the motion and set his hands in his pockets, making it appear as though it was unintentional. Hinata blushed and jerked to a stop. Kiba blinked.
“Eh?”
He drawled out casually, looking her up from down in almost perfect confusion and wonder.
She giggled and waved at him, shaking her head and stalking forward.
“Nothing! N-Nevermind!”
“Alright, if you’re sure…”
He mumbled as she passed, watching her butt sway gently. He snickered and moved again, walking beside her. She really did look nice in that gi, the white complimented her skin and the blue brought out her eyes and hair.
The ying-yang on her back just seem fitting on her. He smiled fondly then closed his eyes and cheesed it.
