Prologue
She dragged her feet along the dirt path. The weather seemed to match her mood perfectly, with dark clouds blocking out the sun and the sky from view. Children were ushered inside by fussing parents. People cautioned her to turn around to avoid getting soaked by a heavy thunderstorm, but their warnings fell upon deaf ears. Sakura's eyes were dull, full of regret and sorrow. She continued to trudge along the path arms limp at her sides. Sakura stared at the ground in front of her. She felt like a hollow shell, a few hours ago, she felt content, happy even, but that felt like ages ago.
`Did you really think that would last?' a voice in the back of her mind cackled.
A small, bitter smile crossed her features. No, she knew that her tranquility was as temporary as the morning mist. Still, as brief as it was, it was a pleasant change. Sakura shivered involuntarily and it was more than just the cold. She understood very well that this could be the very last time seeing Konoha, seeing her father, and seeing Neji.
`Neji…'
The pink-haired medic nin let out a soft sigh. She felt guilty for not saying anything and just slipping away like that. But she knew that if she had told him, he never would've allowed it. Sakura wondered if Neji had noticed her absence yet, and if not how long until he would?
But it wasn't just that weighing on her conscience. It was her father who had caused the death of an innocent academy student. Sakura felt somewhat responsible; after all, it was her who Eto was after.
Her mind wandered again. Had her father always been like this? If so, why hadn't she noticed it earlier? What had caused her father to become so deranged that he took pleasure in his own daughter's pain?
Sakura almost broke down and cried, right then and there, but she quickly scolded herself for even considering it. She quickened her pace slightly, and soon she reached the cleaning of her mother's grave. Through the minute fog, she saw a dark figure leaning against a tombstone.
The figure looked up from the ground, and smirked, “So you came. Smart girl.”
Sakura braced herself and stepped forward.
