Summary: AU Naruto hides many secrets from Konohagakure no Sato. As time continues, Naruto's precious people learn the hard way that many secrets are best left untouched, and that Naruto is not at all what they believed.

There was no time…

 

He had been discovered…

 

Zeiguwa had to be warned!

 

The dark figure flashed through the forest, red eyes glowing in the gloom. The imposing gate of the village came into view. He dropped quickly from the trees and the chunin standing guard let out a sharp cry and fell into defensive positions. Eight ANBU materialized behind him.

 

“The mirror is broken,” he gasped, “The fox must return to the den!”

 

One of the ANBU vanished while the remaining seven surrounded him, and they leapt through the gates, onto the rooftops, and away into the city.

Naruto paused in his packing, his head jerking up sharply as the Hunter Emblem on his arm warmed and pulsed, once, twice, three times! His eyes widened then narrowed. He pulled on his jounin vest and vanished in a puff of smoke.

The man sat in the Hokage office before Tsunade, his eyes closed as Shizune checked him over and Sakura healed his more serious wounds. A puff of smoke appeared at the door, and the man looked up.

 

“Naruto!” he said.

 

Naruto smiled. “It's been a while since you last returned to Konoha in such bad condition, Uchiha Itachi.”

 

Itachi groaned and massaged his temples. “You're crazy, you know that?”

 

Naruto's smile widened. “Of course, I'm a Hunter, and I have been a Hunter for almost as long as I can remember.”

 

“When you leave, be on guard,” Tsunade said, “Itachi's cover has been compromised, and the Akatsuki may attempt to move fast and hard now that a Leaf spy has been discovered. The Kyuubi is the last of the Nine Greats Beasts that they have not yet acquired, and we cannot afford to loose you at this point in time.”

 

The Godaime held out a scroll which Naruto took wordlessly. The blonde opened it and his eyes flashed quickly through the contents, and it was with a blank face that he rolled up the scroll and looked back up with the Hokage.

 

“Is there anything else we should know?” the Jinchuuriki said blandly.

 

“We need Jiraiya to do some information gathering, and a client for a B class mission has requested you in particular. Your departure has been delayed for two weeks.”

 

“I see…”

 

Tsunade felt her heart lift at the shift from bland apathy to bright anticipation in startling cerulean eyes. She picked up a second scroll, this time, marked with a B, and handed it to Naruto. “Your mission details are in the scroll and you leave immediately.”

 

Naruto bowed. “As you wish,” the blonde said, and vanished in a puff of smoke.

 

Just then, Sasuke entered. His eyes rested on his brother, and dark onyx eyes shuttered. Tsunade smiled, pleased at the sign of the Uchiha's self control. There had been a time several years ago when the mere sight of the older Uchiha would have driven the younger into a vengeful frenzy.
