Numb CompassionChapter 1: Long Time Past"Let go of me!" I screamed out.The man gripped my arm tighter, I smelled the whiskey on his breath violently as he spoke. "Shut up, you're coming with me."I was at a bar in my old hometown, The hidden Leaf village. Don't ask me why I was drinking...I really don't feel like talking about it...I reared back my arm and hit him in the face. I wasn't sure if it did much good, I was usually much stronger but I had been weak from the day, and delusional from the alcohol.The man groped angrily at me, slapping me until I had red blotches on my skin.I heard the voice of a man not too far away. It sounded familiar..."Let go of her." He said.The man holding me laughed. "Who's gonna stop me."I fell with extreme force and hit my head, only adding to my blurred vision and semi-consiousness.Before I passed out, I could hear the man's voice calling out to me."Kari...Kari?.."I came to, finding myself in a dark room. I was laying on a bed, I started to wonder where the heck I was. I went to sit up, but my head was spinning uncontrollably, and I had a terrible migrane. I slipped back down, moaning in pain.The door to the room suddenly opened, I awaited my visitor anxiously, wondering if I was going to have to attack or not."I see you're awake." The man said, walking in. "Don't worry, you're safe Kari.""H-how do you know my name...who are you?" I asked, not being able to see him for the darkness."You really don't remember?" He asked, sitting on the bed next to me. "We used to be such good friends.""Wait a minute..." I said. "I recognize that laid back voice..."He reached over and opened the blind on the window, light flooded into the room. I saw his gray hair, the headband over his left eye, and that mask."Kakashi Hatake?" I gasped, taken back. It had been so long since I had seen him last."I knew you'd remember sooner or later." He let out a small laugh."It's been forever!" I smiled and said. "What have you been doing?""Well, I've been trying to patiently teach a group of three genin. They've taken up all my time." He smiled through his mask. "Yourself?""Oh, I've been here and there." I sighed, my head was killing me."What were you thinking, being at that bar last night?" He asked.I rolled my eyes. "I wanted a drink, duh."He gave me an awkward look with his right eye, "When did you start drinking that much?"I sighed. "Since I felt like it, why are you interrogating me?"He shrugged. "Sorry, I'm just curious."I smiled halfway at him. "It's alright.""Well." He said, getting up. "I have to go to training today, would you like to come meet the squad?""I don't know if my hangover will let me." I said. "I do want to go though...you got any alcohol to numb this?"He sighed. "Hold on."He walked out of the room, I proceeded to stand up and fix my clothes..they looked alright to me.He came back into the room, a small cup of something. "Here." He handed it to me. "This should take care of it."I took the glass and threw the liquid down my throat, then made a face in disgust as it tasted horrible at first. "What is that?!""A small shot of hard liquor." He laughed. "Do you want to try and come to the training grounds?"I nodded. "Yeah, I guess I can."We arrived at the training grounds later, Three kids were sitting around, they seemed to be a bit ticked off."Kakashi Sensei! You're later than usual!" The blonde boy in an orange jumpsuit stood up."I'm sorry you guys, I met up with one of my childhood friends." He said.I stepped forward. "Hello. My name is Kari Ushimara. It's nice to meet you all."Kakashi had them each introduce themselves.The blonde boy smiled at me. "My name is Naruto Uzumaki! and I'm going to be Hokage someday! Believe it!"I presumed him to be loud and annoying, but What did I know this was just first impressions.The young girl with pink hair stood up next. "My name is Sakura Haruno. It's nice to meet you ma'am."'polite' I thought of her.The other boy, raven-haired, stayed seated, he didn't even look at me when he spoke. "I'm Sasuke...Sasuke Uchiha."'So this is the survivor of the great Uchiha clan.' I thought. Naruto spoke up again. "How do you know Kakashi Sensei?"I smiled at him. "We were best friends when we were younger...I was always kicking his butt."Kakashi rolled his eyes. "No you weren't."I laughed. "I was too."I could tell I ticked him off a wee bit, but he still acted cool. "Did not.""I was always stronger than you Kakashi, admit it." I said, looking at him in an intimidating manner."You wanna settle this in battle?" He asked, looking at me with a gleam in his eye.I smiled smoothly at him. "I'd be glad to."Before I could even make a move toward him, I felt someone come up behind me."I heard that The great Kari Ushimara was back in town..." The voice said.I groaned...'please no..' I thought."Oh look, it's Gai." Kakashi said, I could tell he was smiling at the horrible fate that was coming upon me.Gai leaned over on me. "I knew you'd come back to see me." He winked.My eye twitched, my hands balled into fists. "Gai...Last time I saw you...Didn't I tell you not to touch me..."He laughed. "Oh, I know you were just playing with me."I grumbled and turned to him, then with extreme force I punched him in the face, sending him flying back onto the ground.The kids looked at the situation, confused and completely weirded out.despite the huge red mark on Gai's face, he got up and walked over, still smiling.Kakashi laughed nervously and scratched his head. "Nope, nothing has changed."I reared back my arm to throw another punch, but Kakashi held back my arm and shook his head. "Save your anger for another time."I sighed and put my arm down. "Yeah...I know.""Kari, I didn't know I got on your nerves that bad." Gai said."You don't Gai." I said. "I'm just upset and don't want anyone really touching me right now. I'm sorry."He laughed. "So, do you think I have a chance on a date with you?"I grumbled again, Kakashi quickly reached for my arms as I struggled forward against his grasp. "Let me go! I'm gonna pulverise him I swear!"Sasuke let out a small laugh. "You're a loser like Naruto here."Naruto glared at him, and I stopped struggling. My head slowly turned to look at him, furious, i walked toward him."What did you say..punk..." I growled.He scoffed. "I called you a loser...freak.""I don't think you wanna mess with me little boy..." I said, feeling the heat rising to my face as I grew angrier.Kakashi grabbed my shoulders again. "Calm down, The both of you. Sasuke, it's not nice to talk to a lady like that."Sasuke laughed sarcastic like. Saying nothing.I rolled my eyes and wiggled free from Kakashi's grasp, I walked off, embarrassed and angry.Kakashi sighed. "I was hoping to get some good training done today..But it looks like everyone's in a bad mood."I walked slowly to a tree and sat down, leaning against it. "Go ahead, get on with training, I'll sit here."Guy walked over. "Do you mind if I sit with you."I sighed "Don't you have a squad?""Oh yeah!" He said. "I was supposed to train with Lee today! Crap, I'll see you guys later!"He was off in a flash, Kakashi laughed and turned to me "Good going Kari."I shrugged and watched them start their training. I soon began feeling light headed again...I guess when I stopped moving and rested then my body focused on the loss of alcohol or whatever. So I rested my head on the tree and began to doze off.It was a little bit later during training when Naruto looked over to the tree I was at."Kakashi Sensei, is something wrong with Kari?" He asked.Kakashi looked over toward me and smiled. "Nah, she's just tired is all."He was right, I was tired. But more than tired, I couldn't concentrate on a damn thing because of the stupid hangover...the shot of liquor didn't really help much...so I just had to rest.When I woke up, Kakashi was sitting on the ground next to me, reading his book. I looked around, seeing nobody but us."Where'd the kids go?" I asked."Home." He said without looking at me. "Training's been over.""Why didn't you wake me?" I asked."I didn't want to disturb you. besides, I needed to catch up on my book." He said.I rolled my eyes. 'Come Come Paradise.' I expected was his book. He suddenly closed it and stuck it inside his vest. "So...how long are you staying here?""I don't know." I said. "I might stay for a while.""Well Kari, I would usually offer to help you get into a good inn around here. But I don't want to see what happened last night at that bar again." He said. "That's why I've decided to have you stay at my place."I looked at him, my eyes narrowed. "What? Are you serious? Kakashi, there is no reason to be worried about me, I can take care of myself.""Like you did last night? Kari, you could have been hurt back there." He said.I sighed. "Ok, Ok...fine...I'll stay with you."He nodded and stood up."But remember, I'm not staying here forever." I told him."I know." He said, smiling through his mask. "But I'm going to make sure your safe while you are here."I smiled and nodded once. "Ok.""Shall we go?" He asked."Sure." I said. "Sure..."
