Prologue

Azure eyes gazed out the window into the early evening twilight, tanned fingers drumming themselves on the sill. Normally, the Hokage would be sifting through paperwork and readying himself for retiring to his personal suite at this time of the day, but his thoughts had drifted to a certain ebony haired Anbu. Those thoughts had immediately thrown his entire schedule out the window. With a sigh he spun around in his chair, eyes searching the large desk calendar, a finger coming to rest on one of the day squares. Four months. It had been four months since Sasuke left on his mission, and there had been no word from him since that time. The hokage's brow furrowed slightly, teeth gripping at his bottom lip. Don't tell me you're worried about him...

"Tch! I'm not worried, dumb fox! I'm just... I don't know." Naruto muttered, more to himself than anything. He hated it when the kitsune's voice popped into his head from out of the blue. His eyes narrowed slightly as he acknowledged that the voice had been disrupting his thoughts more frequently lately. The 23-year-old newly appointed Hokage wasn't sure what to think of that, and was afraid to look too closely at why the kitsune was more vocal recently. Not that it mattered much. He had other things to think about right now.

With a soft noise, he moved so that his heels rested lazily against the edge of his desk, long legs stretched out in front of him, ankles crossed. As he settled his folded hands behind his head, his eyes slowly roamed over the belongings on his desk, stopping immediately on the picture of team seven, taken so many years ago. The team had went through many changes since that time, having been pulled apart and nearly destroyed, then slightly patched up before being pulled apart again. Sasuke, in his manic need for vengeance, had managed to disappoint the entire village, break a young girl's heart, and completely crush Naruto's. Things changed, though, and they had moved on.

Naruto did fulfill his promise, and had brought Sasuke back eventually. He trained for three years, pushing his body and soul to their limits - and it all had paid off immensely. Together with Jiraya and Tsunade, he had destroyed Orochimaru and brought a very angry yet very beaten Sasuke back to the leaf village. Naruto left again for more training with Jiraya, and had returned to Konoha a grown man with considerable skill and power. Things since that time had been very…tense. For seven years, Sasuke had not met his gaze once. Had not uttered a word to him, had not even acknowledged Naruto's existence. It was as if Naruto didn't exist at all in Sasuke's world, and it had pissed the blonde ninja off to no end, but it wasn't as if he was going to give Sasuke the pleasure of knowing it. The anger he could handle… but it was the pain that got to him. The pain in his heart, that Sasuke would no longer recognize him. It was as if Sasuke had wished he had killed Naruto that day at the Valley of the End.

Jiraya had once told him that it was Sasuke's own ghosts creating the problem, and that he shouldn't worry over such things. True or not, Naruto could simply no longer ignore the tugging at his heartstrings. Nor could he bear living his dream without his teammate at his side. He wondered if Sasuke even knew about Tsunade's decision to retire, or that there was a new Hokage. At that thought, his lips curled into a small smirk, eyes the color of the sky narrowing into slits. He had one more card to play, Naruto did. And he was about to win the game. Naruto never gave up until he won, that was just fact. “Heh heh heh…” Naruto beamed at the picture on his desk. “Anytime now, Sasuke-bastard, anytime.”

And the Hokage of Konohagure waited. He could be patient when he wanted to be.

Luckily, he wouldn't have to wait long.
