Chapter 5: Amaya
Amaya opened her eyes slowly at the sound of a shrill beeping sound emitting from somewhere on her left side.
Damn alarm clock.
“All right, I'm getting up,” she muttered darkly, pressing the off button while noting the time. So it was 5:30... “Now shut the hell up…”
Yet the clock did not stop beeping. Irritated, the dark haired Jounin opened her window, picked up her clock, and threw it as hard as she could.
“Teach you a lesson,” she muttered, climbing back into bed, and closing her eyes, hoping to get more sleep.
But that proved impossible as Lizo opened her room door. “Amaya, do we have any eggs? I have to meet my team later for training, and I need to eat.”
“Make something yourself, I have a mission today,” she muttered.
“Then get up, or you'll be late for sure,” Lizo said, shutting the door.
Disgruntled, Amaya got slowly out of bed. “Damn you,” she whispered to thin air. “Can't a woman get some sleep?”
--
A yawning Amaya walked into the kitchen ten minutes later, slowly walking toward the table that Lizo was sitting at.
“Wake up,” Lizo said, smiling slightly. “Looks like you overslept today.”
“You know that's not my fault,” she muttered. “Damn alarm clock… Damn mission… Damn everything.”
Lizo's face became stern. “You ready for your mission?”
Amaya's body tensed, her eyes flickering. “I have a feeling that it's going to be like seven years ago.”
Lizo narrowed his eyes. “What do you mean by `like seven years ago?'”
“Like that mission,” Amaya whispered. “All active Jounin were called by The Council yesterday.”
Lizo frowned. “You… remember, huh?”
Amaya nodded slightly, and sat down at the table. “It's something that I want to forget… but I never can…”
--
“ALL RIGHT!” a twelve year old Amaya shouted, jumping up and down with joy. “OUR FIRST C-RANK MISSION!”
“Calm down Amaya,” Hirana said sternly. “We still need to see Kage-sama to get approval. And then you need to meet the escort.”
Amaya pouted. “Can't we just skip all that stuff and go on ahead?”
“Without the escort?” Lizo teased, poking her with his kunai, but was immediately death glared by his teammate.
“Lizo has a point,” Hirana said, smiling. “Amaya, you should learn to think things through like Lizo, and not be so impulsive.”
Amaya leaned back against the nearest tree, pouting.
“Then let's go,” Haizaki spoke up, clearly tired of the constant quarreling between his two teammates. “We can meet the escort, then we'll head off toward Sand.”
He was immediately glomped by the hyperactive Amaya.
“See?” Amaya smiled, hugging Haizaki. “He has sense, unlike a certain someone…” She glared at Lizo, who was standing nearby with his mouth hanging open in indignance.
“Let go of me,” Haizaki choked. “Not breathing…”
Hirana and Lizo started laughing as a blushing Amaya released Haizaki.
--
“So you've been here for ten years, huh?” Amaya asked, leaning against the wall in the Kage office. “And what did you say your name was?”
“Tamasine Suoh,” a man replied. He was tall, probably about six and a half feet, with onyx eyes and dark hair. His forehead protector bore the symbol of Sand.
“Hirana,” the Kage said, standing up. “I expect you to do well on this mission, along with your team. Sand is a long distance from here, and that country, Sound, has been stirring up trouble.”
The Kage was old, probably about the age of seventy. His white hair and wrinkled skin made him look even older. He had white eyes, blank and dull. He was blind.
“Yes, Kage-sama,” Hirana replied, bowing slightly. “Now come along you three. Run home and pack your bags. We'll set off tomorrow at about five o' clock, so we can get to Leaf before dark.”
“Why can't we leave now?” Amaya asked, tilting her head.
“Amaya, look at it this way,” Lizo replied. “It's about three in the afternoon, and it takes about seven hours to reach Leaf. We'll never reach there by nightfall, and it's difficult to travel by night.”
Amaya shrugged. “Whatever you say.”
--
"You know..." Amaya said, yawning as she stood at the gate the next morning. "It would be so much easier if we left yesterday. Then we wouldn't have to get up this early."
"Amaya," Hirana said sternly. "Stop complaining. You wanted this mission, and you have it."
Amaya simply shook her head. "Fine, I'll shut up."
A stifled laugh came from behind her. She immediately turned to see Lizo laughing silently to himself.
"What's wrong with you?" Amaya snapped. "Got a problem or something like that?"
"You complain an awful lot," Lizo laughed. "You act exactly like my mother-"
He stopped short.
Amaya tilted her head. "Are you going to brood on the past, or are you going to help us with this mission?"
Lizo glared at her. "Shut up."
Amaya glared back at him. "You were the one who-"
"You guys," an exasperated voice said quietly. The two turned to see Haizaki standing by them, looking tired. "It's a bit too early in the morning to be arguing, don't you think?"
Amaya glared at her second teammate, but didn't respond.
"Well, Suoh-san," Hirana said, looking toward the gate. "Are you ready to go?"
A tired Suoh stood by the gate. "Yes, let's before your students start fighting again."
Amaya and Lizo glared at each other again.
--
A boat gently floated across the ocean toward the country of Leaf. Seagulls flew overhead, while a clear blue sky brightened the day.
"Now this is good," Amaya yawned, putting her hands behind her head. "A clear blue sky, clouds, not a worry in the world. Just this escort."
Hirana narrowed his eyes. "There's something not right here."
Haizaki raised his head. "What do you mean, is there something wrong?"
"It's still fairly early in the morning, the mist shouldn't have risen yet," Hirana said quietly. "Especially since this is the time of year where the mist should be fairly heavy before eight o' clock."
"What time is it now?" Lizo asked, sitting up straight. He had been slouching against the mast for a while now.
"Six thirty," Hirana replied. "For that matter, the sun shouldn't even be up."
Amaya narrowed her eyes, and carefully scanned the area. "This is..." she whispered. "Genjutsu."
