DISCLAIMER: I don’t own Naruto, or its characters. I don’t make money off of this fic, I just do it for my own enjoyment (and the readers). Naruto is owned by Masashi Kishimoto…go buy his stuff and support his greatness.
SECOND DISCLAIMER: If you haven’t read up to certain parts of the manga, there may be spoilers in here for you. I don’t know of any off-hand, but I’ve read up to the 320 chapters and I may just let something slip unconsciously.
Naruto woke groggily to a dark and sinister scent. He tried to shake the fogginess in his head, but only opened his eyes a few millimeters before a sudden rush of wooziness hit him making the room spin. The smell that was emanating from his surroundings was making him gag, bringing him very close to vomiting. The young man had no idea how he kept himself from retching when he finally forced his eyes open. He hadn’t realized it before, but the smell was one that that Kyubi reveled in…one that the nine-tailed fox demon loved. It was the smell of blood. It was everywhere; blood on the walls, on the floor, on his clothes, on his hands, its taste was in his mouth. Naruto began to shake his head furiously. No, why would there be blood in his mouth, in fact he looked as though he bathed in it. Kyubi growled within him, glowering in the wondrous moment for him, he had won if only for a moment, and in that moment…
Across the room there were bits and pieces, small tatters and remains of flesh. Farther over, nearly out of site and hidden by his bed was an arm that looked like it had been ripped out of its socket and viciously chewed on. Near it was the first recognizable remains…when Naruto saw those, it was the moment he started weeping and screaming uncontrollably. Sasuke, with only half of his face left intact on his skull, lay in pieces on his mattress. Next to Sasuke he saw clumps of pink; wispy, stringy, and sticky with blood. The roots and scalp that had been attached to Sakura clung to the floor and the chunks of hair in a vile manner. He didn’t see more of her and frantically spun back and forth looking for her. “Sakura…” he cried.
“Naruto.”
The voice was so quiet he barely heard it, but it was definitely hers. Where was it, where was she?
“Naruto,” her voice wisped up to him again, and he realized it was coming from his backside. He looked behind him and saw Sakura’s limp body. Her face mauled, but still alive if only barely. But as he examined further he realized that life wouldn’t be with her for long, her body was ripped in half at her navel and her guts were spilling out onto the floor. “Naruto,” she once again whispered.
Naruto clenched his eyes shut and screamed incessantly. He couldn’t stop, how could he stop? He had just murdered the two people that he cared about most in this world. Sasuke…Sakura…he couldn’t look at them anymore, not after what he’d done, he continued to scream until he felt faint and the room began to go black.
“Naruto…Naruto…” Sakura’s voice was becoming louder, stronger…almost as though she were alive. “Dammit, Naruto snap out of it!” Naruto couldn’t move but felt so nauseous that he felt his head roll to the side as he wretched the contents of his stomach on the floor where he lay. He was still lying in a pile of his own vomit when the room started to come into focus. Standing over him was an uncommonly anxious Kakashi, a furious and frightened Sakura, and to his side grasping his shoulders and securing him to the floor sporting an intense glare of worry and disgust (and partially covered by Naruto’s vomit), Sasuke.
“This is the last time I EVER help you train your defenses against genjutsu!” Sakura hissed at the blonde punctuating her lecture with a hard fist landing squarely in his shoulder. Naruto was still very confused, unable to understand what happened. Visions of his murdered teammates once again flooded his mind and he puked again…and once again Sasuke got the brunt of it.
Kakashi chuckled at this, and teased a very disgusted looking Sasuke “You should have moved after the first time he vomited, it would have been much cleaner.”
“Someone has to hold him down until he regains his senses,” Sasuke growled at the older Jonin. He hated when his former sensei got smug with him. He watched as Sakura continued to verbally and physically pummel the lump of Naruto on the floor, letting him know very clearly how she had been against it the entire time and that she had told him that it was stupid to let her into his head like that. Sakura had been training very hard with Tsunade over the years. Perhaps her genjutsu skills had even surpassed Sasuke’s sharingan. He surely never wanted to train as Naruto had; whatever she made him see was so terrifying that it had turned the twenty-three year old Jonin into a quivering pile of mush.
Suddenly Naruto was aware…he recognized his surroundings, he remembered the request to Sakura to help his mental defenses, he was acutely aware that Sasuke was pinning him to the floor in a puddle of his own vomit. He tried to sit up, but only struggled weakly under Sasuke’s arms. “Sakura! How could you?” Naruto shouted, tears brimming in the corners of his eyes. At this Sakura immediately shut up. She hadn’t seen Naruto cry since he was thirteen, and now tears were very slowly rolling down his furious face.
Sasuke saw that Naruto had finally become fully conscious again and released him, as angry as Naruto was Sasuke knew that the young man would not hurt anyone. Even if he tried, it was apparent that Sakura’s newest genjutsu had temporarily weakened him. Sasuke let out a slight sigh, the only sound of relief that he allowed himself. “I’m going to go shower,” the dark haired young man grumbled. “I hate the smell of vomit. I hate it even more when it is reeks of ramen.”
Naruto slumped a bit as he sat up, not able to even support the whole of his body. “Sakura, how could you?” he repeated to her, making it known that she had crossed a line. His voice was now very soft and considerably shaky.
Sakura’s face softened a bit as she took a cloth out of her med-nin kit and gently wiped some of the vomit from his cheek. “You told me to, Naruto. You said that I couldn’t hold back, that I was to do the very worst to you that I could.” Naruto threw her a menacing glare, letting her know yet again that she had done something detestable. Sakura nearly let tears spill herself, she knew what she had made him see, and it was horrific. “I’m sorry Naruto, truly I am. I never meant to hurt you. I only wanted to help you become stronger.” The tension and anger she felt from him didn’t subside and she secretly wished for her goofy, completely unserious Jonin teammate to return and to return quickly.

Naruto sat quietly by his window, it was unusual for him to stay so silent for this long, but he couldn’t force himself up. He trained, he ate, and he came home and just stared out his window. It was very out of character for him, but it was all that he was able to do for the last three days. He usually spent happy evening hanging out with Sakura and Sasuke and whichever other friends joined them at one of the local bars or restaurants. When not on missions they often found themselves sitting under the stars at night talking about the most inane things. Sometimes they stumbled onto things that were more important, things that pulled deeply at Naruto’s heart. He always said something stupid to break up the greater philosophical moments; it was his gift after all. Now, Naruto felt wrong as words didn’t want to come to his lips these past few days. He didn’t even want to see Sakura or Sasuke outside of training. Even in their training he worked more with Kakashi, especially since he hadn’t been there in the horrid vision that Sakura had made him live in his mind. Kakashi was the safest because Naruto never saw his friend and former sensei in a puddle of his own blood and ripped into shreds by Kyubi…by Naruto.
How Sakura had known his worst fear was beyond him. Perhaps he had managed to leak that delicate information during one of their less sober nights under the starlight. Good sake always went well with cool, clear nights under the twinkling sky. On those nights even Kakashi joined them, and drank more sake than the other three combined. Those nights usually ended when Kakashi started hitting on Sakura. The times that Sakura put up with his perverse, drunken advances the night would end when Kakashi started hitting on Naruto or Sasuke. Naruto thought it was funny, but Sasuke nearly pummeled the drunk silver-haired jonin whenever he tried to add soft caresses to his verbal advances. Sasuke brooded even more with a little liquor in him, Naruto couldn’t believe that he could ever get grumpier than he was when he was sober…but he managed it with a little alcohol.
Naruto’s infamous loud mouth just became louder when he got his hands on sake. He realized that someday his loose-lipped nature might get him in trouble if ever anyone spied on their little drunken rendezvous. Hell, it already had, and Sakura had proved it to him. He sighed to himself. He wasn’t ready to admit the real reason why he was so angry at Sakura. He wasn’t ready to allow himself to make the realization and connections in his brain. So for yet another night Naruto stared numbly up at the stars, wishing that he was sitting outside with Sakura, Sasuke, Kakashi, and a bottle of sake just like old times. If it felt normal and didn’t make him want to retch, he’d give anything for a moment like that.

A/N’s post notes: I like doing shorter chapters. I used to write long chapters that just went on and on, but I like doing shorter more frequent updates for now. I hope that you enjoyed the first chapter.
